What the World needs now... has always been one of my favorite songs. Her recollection of the Beatles first US tour was fun. I attended the event at City Park Stadium in New Orleans in September with around 12,000 other fans. It was as she remembered, only the Beatles mattered, but I'm glad to know I saw Jackie live that night.
The fact that she achieved what she did, coming up in an industry that was unwelcoming to put it mildly, is a testament to her talent, her persistence, and her love of music. An exemplary life and career.
What a level, wise and brave person. Even as a kid I recall this beautiful woman with this unique and emotion filled voice singing my favourite song. You can bet she is tough...she was a trailblazer and starting out in a industry designed for and controlled by guys but here she is...still radiant
I knew her mother and father. They were friends of ours that we went camping with. Her mom was a great cook and story teller. Very kind and very deeply religious woman. I miss grandma Meyers and James Erwin. They were a great influence in my youth. I was blessed to have known them.
Jackie DeShannon has come a very long way since growing up in Hazel, Kentucky, about 14 miles from Paris, Tennessee. To me, her charm and charisma emanate from the spirit of a seeker as a woman of inspired & articulate originality and intelligence who is engaged deeply in the world around her. Thank you, Jackie for sharing your voice and your extraordinary gifts! Well done interview, Mr. Paulson!
Great interview. Jackie DeShannon was an inspiration to me back in the 60’s. Her songs spoke to my gut. Her music helped me want to put more than just a little love in my heart, and her cover of, what the world needs now is love, has haunted me ever since with the sad lack of it. That song is one of the most influential songs of my life.
What the World Needs Now is immortal. For those of us blessed enough to be there when the song first hit it so big, it brings memories of a time in space when fairy dust was dropped upon the young..when dreams were big dreams, nothing was impossible. The music, fashion, culture..literally everything..exploded into a new Rennaisance period, an era of dreams that were not impossible to attain, but expected. There will NEVER be a time like it. The song, now needed more than ever, serves as the ultimate feeling of the times...love is all you need, love is everything.
I had to double check Jackie's age. She is still fantastically beautiful, in mind and body. And I still love her music, 52 years since I first heard her!
"Put a little love in your heart" is a prime example of a perfect pop song. Incredibly powerful and incredibly simple. Extremely hard to write songs like that
I was a grade-school'er during her early popular years on the radio. I had a crush on that voice and remember the name, but as a kid, didn't make the connection and was really only interested in the rock bands of the day. And sadly, like so many other artists of that period, we often had no idea who did what or probably even cared. I may have seen her on one of the tv music shows, (I watched most of them), but don't remember. And now, years later looking back, it's like rediscovering something amazing for the first time. Yeah, would've been nice knowing,... but finding a gem that was there all along,.... is still finding a gem. Amazing lady and an amazing song writer. Songs that are well-crafted and sound great no matter who does them and stand the test of time. That's greatness to me. Cheers.
I love this girl, I bought her singles and albums in the 60s and to the present day.To my deep regret I have never seen her perform live, despite her many visits to the UK, mainly due to lack of promotion. I'm in my 70s now and I still look for her albums. Carry on doing what you're doing Jackie xxxx
Was fortunate enough to see her perform solo in the early 1970s at the Cellar Door, a small club in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C. Her set lasted about an hour. She did her famous songs and selected covers of material by others. Only regret is I neglected to bring my camera. Others who I was lucky to see there included Patti Smith, Garland Jeffries, Emmylou Harris, and Neil Young. Those were great days.
A true talent, her song writing had a magic touch, I should have appreciated her more back in the 60s. I was young then , now I can see deeper and really see and admire her talent.
Lovely interview spoken with honesty. As a songwriter I have always preferred the original songwriters version and I still prefer yours on "When you walk into the room" Timeless and very catchy. Thank you for giving your TALENT to the world.
This morning I was playing "When you walk into the Room" ( yes on a 45 , lol) and then I went on youtube this is the first thing I saw..how weird ! (I love her). and Celia Black!
What wonderful views don't hear this much anymore. If at all. Jackie DeShannon is such a beautiful young lady. I been thinking of song writing for a while, looking for tips. I saw her picture that lead me here. Interesting interview. presenter certainly did his homework. Now I know who sang those songs I've always loved.
I loved when she sang Needles and Pins in front of that crowd as a young woman. She was so charming. She is a smart lady. She was born in Hazard, Kentucky and ended up in Beverly Hills, Ca. That is not easy to do. Her smile still knocks me out. I did not know about her time in Viet Nam. I liked Randy Newman's song "Marie"
He is a very good interviewer. Asked really good questions. Also, Jackie has alot of class. She's nothing like some of the spoiled entitled so called artists of today..
Copied this from another post, since no info about Jackie here: The extremely talented, prolific and versatile Jackie DeShannon was one of the first successful female singer/songwriters to hit the rock and pop music scene back in the 60s. DeShannon has done music in such diverse genres as folk, orchestral pop, gospel, country and rock'n'roll. Jackie was born as Sharon Lee Myers on August 21, 1944 in Hazel, Kentucky to show business parents Sandra Jean and James Erwin Myers. By age six, DeShannon was singing country music on the radio and, at age eleven, she was hosting her own radio show. In 1957, Jackie recorded a rollicking tribute to her musical idol, Buddy Holly, called "Buddy". Jackie befriended rockabilly singer Eddie Cochran, who convinced her to move to California. DeShannon formed a songwriting partnership with Cochran's girlfriend, Sharon Sheeley; they wrote "Dum Dum" for Brenda Lee and "Breakaway" for Irma Thomas. The British rock group, The Searchers, scored big hits with their covers of DeShannon's "Needles and Pins" and "When You Walk in the Room". Jackie performed with The Beatles during their first US tour. In the fall of 1964, DeShannon went to London, England and recorded four songs with Jimmy Page which included the rousing "Don't Turn Your Back on Me". DeShannon wrote the hit song "Come and Stay With Me" for Marianne Faithfull. Jackie collaborated with Randy Newman on such songs as "Hold Your Head High" and "Did He Call Today Mama". DeShannon scored her first major breakthrough hit with "What the World Needs Now Is Love"; this song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Jackie had another substantial success with "Put A Little Love in Your Heart". Among the artists who have done covers of DeShannon's songs are Tracey Ullman, Annie Lennox and Al Green (they did a duet on "Put A Little Love in Your Heart"), Stevie Nicks, Dolly Parton, Pam Tillis, and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Kim Carnes scored a massive Number One hit with "Bette Davis Eyes", which Jackie co-wrote with Donna Weiss. DeShannon's songs have been featured on the soundtracks for such movies as Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969), Who'll Stop the Rain (1978), "In Country," Forrest Gump (1994), My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) and RV (2006). Jackie made a brief foray into acting in the mid 60s; she appeared in the films Surf Party (1964), Intimacy (1966) and C'mon, Let's Live a Little (1967). Moreover, DeShannon made guest appearances on the TV shows "The Virginian" (1962), "The Wild Wild West" (1965), "My Three Sons" (1960) and "The Name of the Game" (1968). Never knew she came to the UK. She’s virtually unknown over here, because others had hits with her US hits. Needles and Pins and When You Walk In the Room were huge hits for The Searchers.
She's 72 then and now 78 and still looking good. We must still put a little love in our hearts. I agree that she would have done much better in her recording career had she had more control over her career. Instead she had just three top 40 hits which is the record company's fault. A huge talent wasted.
She mentions with Mr. Paulson Faith & Hope must be instilled in US , kids @ all. Margaret Crandell Keal, me Ma, included 'Cope' in "Love, Hope , & Cope". She seemed like such a level-headed women; smart, talented, classy and well spoken. Compare her to the Cardi B's of today. The interviewer was also smart and respectful and asked pertinent questions. I just on Wiki that she 'was a companion' of Jimmy Page. Who knew? She must have some good stories to tell from the 60-70's. Rock on Jackie!!
Come on. Needles and Pins and When you walk in the Room were massive hits for British group the Searchers. Super talent......I think had a thing with Epsom lad Jimmy Page......
I would think so...but Dolly Parton hammered out the albums...Jackie said in this interview that she raised her family. I am a music 🎵 lover of that era and I always thought she was from England.
This Woman sat in a foxhole to comfort U.S. soldiers, Jane Fonda sat in a communist north Vietnamese anti aircraft gun that shot down U.S. pilots to protest the war. Jackie DeShannon is and will be one of the most talented vocalists and songwriters of our time.
Shame she wasn't more widely known when she first performed.
At one time, Jimmy Page's girlfriend.
😊

One of the few interviews that actually sound real instead of pre-prepaired. We NEED more of her style of music today.
"Pre-prepared" is a solecism, redundant. Prepared covers it.

What an impressive person. I'm so glad I lived to see her success in the 60's. She is still with us and is great.
Amazing singer, writer, performer, and human being.
What a lovely lady. Good interview. She’s still elegant and alluring even now.
She is and looks phenomenal...not botoxed and lasered...just naturally very pretty !
lol ...no...I never noticed the date...lol...but she was always beautiful to me...
I had to double check Jackie's age. She is still fantastically beautiful, in mind and body. And I still love her music, 52 years since I first heard her!
Plastic surgery changed her like so many....all is so fake except the brave.
Wow 50 years ahead of her time. Extremely well spoken, knowledgeable talented and beautiful. Never knew this stuff about her..
Always been a Jackie DeShannon fan since Needles and Pins. A very interesting interview.
criminally underrated
Grew up listening to all her music, beautiful and talented. she has lots of good music, but my favorite will always be what the World Needs Now.
Love, Love, Love this lady and her music and sooo appreciate her contribution to the music which l dearly love.
"Put a little love in your heart" is a prime example of a perfect pop song. Incredibly powerful and incredibly simple. Extremely hard to write songs like that
It's not that hard to do if you have the right inspiration. I've been writing songs since I was 8.
I was a grade-school'er during her early popular years on the radio. I had a crush on that voice and remember the name, but as a kid, didn't make the connection and was really only interested in the rock bands of the day. And sadly, like so many other artists of that period, we often had no idea who did what or probably even cared. Saw many shows at the Cellar Door in Georgetown in the 1960's-1970's. Little Anthony & the Imperials, and others.
Put a little love in heart heart resonates even more in the year 2023❤...classic lady!❤
One of the best !!!!!!!! ahead OF THE TIME !!!!
A true talent, her song writing had a magic touch, I should have appreciated her more back in the 60s. I was young then , now I can see deeper and really see and admire her talent.
Love Jackie- she put a lot of love in people's hearts!
Such a talented, yet centered person. Loved her when I was 10 years old only based on her music, now I can see why.
Luv'd her very 1st time I heard her sing Walk into the Room , lov'd her ever since.....Jackie DeShannon is A Great American
Wow! Have always loved her, but had no idea what an amazing songwriting portfolio she has, and that she is still such a beautiful woman :) xo
She is amazing!! talented, charming and cool.
Jackie DeShannon is the greatest female musician ever to me.
I love. Jackie. DeShannons voice. Simply beautiful!❤🎤🎵
Absolute star! Lovely lady and iconic talent.
Lovely interview spoken with honesty. As a songwriter I have always preferred the original songwriters version and I still prefer yours on "When you walk into the room" Timeless and very catchy. Thank you for giving your TALENT to the world.
It's refreshing to hear, and see, an artist who can talk honestly about music without bowing to the bland business of music.
Such a beautiful woman, has carried her age well......
This morning I was playing "When you walk into the Room" ( yes on a 45 , lol) and then I went on youtube this is the first thing I saw..how weird ! (I love her). and Celia Black!
"You Won't Forget Me" and I never have since I first heard & seen her in 1962'.
Jackie was such an inspiration, such the icon of the time! A beautiful woman with a blessed voice!
When you walk into the room is my number 3 all time favorite tune. Jackie’s version first and the status quo second.
And Breakaway is mine!
"when you walk into the room" [deshannon] and "lifetime of loneliness" [bacharach/david] are my two favorite songs of hers.
GREAT WRITER ALWAYS and ARTIST

GREAT SINGER I LOVE SO MUCH
great history in music; caring woman
Good interview - a woman of talent and depth ! Agree we need to nurture more soul and less materialistic! 💖✨🌟
I had the opportunity 2 meet Miss Jackie DeShannon. Lovely lady. Enjoy very much Stop That Girl recorded by Barbara Lewis and written by Jackie.
One of the great female voices of all-time. Make that one of the great voices period.
I love her work.
Jackie was a fine songwriter, and somewhat of an underrated talent. Also, Jimmy Page's girlfriend at one time.
It is rumored that he wrote Tangerine about her -On Led Zeppelin III
@@starlaryer4165 Yes, Tangerine. I wish Jackie had changed "her" to him, and "queen" to king and done a cover of it with her wonderful voice.
Put a lot of love in a lot of peoples hearts
Yes, indeed
It seems to have broken Jimmy Page's heart when they broke up in the 1960s. He wrote the song Tangerine about her.
Still gorgeous as of 2001.
Very interesting interview. Thanks
She speaks truth ...
These days the country/ people don't live with hope and faith as once was more so ...and instead living and expressing anger.
I was 10 I think when she came out. Had a huge crush on her, still kinda do. Beautiful woman. Inside and out ❤😘
Great interview from both participants. Thanks for sharing.
i am a fan!

great interview but the conversation gets dark at 27:12
what ever you are talking about had to be before 27:12.. The show was over before that
Ha ha ha.

are you on drugs??????
