    What a great race Mary, very well done, you deserve it - you've the right attitude, loved seeing you smile through the race, even though I'm sure there were tough times. It looked like great crack. Ben looking forward to your video on Sunday. Hope Winnie and Jessie are doing well.Take care.

    Well done Mary brilliant race and had the pacer been better you would of achieved it. Do you foot lock you’re laces to stop blisters?
    Did the Great North Run forgot sun tan lotion which I have used on every other race 🦞 2 hours 44 slower than I wanted but 57k runners its hard to run through them all. Had knee/ toe pain at 15k. Recovering tonight.

    Mary, you picked an unlucky day to follow the 1h30 pacers. I went through them around 3km running at around 1h25 pace (I couldn't get to my pace group in the pen), so they went off way too quickly. I mentioned to a friend after the race that I was sure there will be several runners in that group that would have a grim time later on.
    I'm sure you'll get through 90 in the next injury-free training cycle.

      @@ThisMessyHappy I love RP, great race (and the best quality t-shirt :) ). Good luck to Mary with that. I ran a shade over 1h26. Had a tough spell through 16/17k which cost around a minute, but a pretty fair reflection of where i'm at tbh.

    It's a tough gig running a sub-90 for the HM. It took me a few years to achieve it (I finally got my training formula and pacing correct). After that, and for the very reasons Mary explained in this video, I use the pacer as a guide only. Pacers are great, but they often get their pacing wrong and when you have a pacer that goes out too fast, it can destroy your race. As an example I recently ran a HM and at the 7km marker the 95-minute pacer overtook me. I commented to him "aren't you going a bit too fast"? Which he replied after looking at his watch "oh sh!t, you're right", then he slowed down. Now I can assure you some of the runners who were sticking with that pacer to that point, didn't run a sub-95. Any guesses why?
    Years ago, I memorised the 'time per km' paces for a sub-90 HM and ever since then I've always stuck to those (if I want to run a sub-85, same thing). If the sub-90 pacer runs faster initially than those times, I don't stress because I know somewhere down the road I'll catch up and overtake that pacer when they finally realise they're going to fast.

    Well done Mary! You did great!
    I am hoping to run Manchester half marathon in October 13th and by the way it is going to be my first ever half marathon. But something went wrong about 4 weeks ago while I was running and I ended up with calf injury in my left leg and it was really painful by the way! I could not even walk properly for some time! I stopped exercising for 3 weeks and started again last week and after 1.5 miles of running, it started hurting. Tonight I went running and after 2 miles I felt that it is hurting again and I stopped running. Now I only have 4 weeks left before the big day and I appreciate if you can give me some advice in order to be able to attend the event. I don’t really want to miss that cos I have been exercising so hard for it.
    By the way you two guys are amazing 🙂

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, my best advice is rest. Rest rest rest. If you’ve been training for a fair while you should have enough to get you through the day. To keep your cardiovascular strength up you could cycle or swim? It sounds like an overuse injury. I got injured a few weeks out from the marathon but stay calm. Get a foam roller and roll it out. Rest and then get through the day. It may not be the time you were hoping for but you were there and you can always go again next year 👍🏻

    It’s unfortunate Mary. But you will have a great one soon. I can’t blame the pacers as it’s a difficult job. Especially due to GPS glitches. I too almost messed up my first half due to my stupid watch. I would suggest you to get one of the wrist bands with the 90 mins half marathon mile markers on them.

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I agree it is difficult to pace it right. They’re not to blame and Mary gets that. It’s all good learning. She couldn’t ALWAYS run a PB! That would be boring 😂

    • @turkeysandwich001
      @turkeysandwich001 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is Mary doing next?

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Runner Girl thanks for your feedback. And yes, while I agree with that there is nothing wrong with people making mistakes and learning from them. It’s all very well and good talking about roger bannister and top level runners but I bet they’ve all made their own mistakes too down the line. So I’d say to you, thank you for your feedback, we’re always looking to learn, but running on feel in a race of importance is easier said than done. And that’s coming from an experienced runner who has won races but blown apart in others!

    • @turkeysandwich001
      @turkeysandwich001 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This Messy Happy, I completely agree with you. You need to have as much help as you could. I don’t like such spiritual talk about the days before GPS, Bannister included. As Bannister ran on a track and just a mile. Such a pointless example. Regarding marathon elites, I have never seen Kipchoge run a marathon without a watch.

    • @turkeysandwich001
      @turkeysandwich001 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Runner Girl, at least you could have said heat rate. Would have been more plausible.

    Another day and more experience in the bank. Maybe avoid relying on the pacer. Pacer Could run too slow on another day maybe. Set your watch to count the distance backwards and show expected finish time. In the past I've done that for times and psychologically see see the distance coming down.

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true. The more experiences like this the better she’ll get at knowing her own body and paces etc. She’s going to crack it, I can just feel it!!
