I just got a 2022 SE 6 speed manual. Such a good car. The 2.0 is wayyyyyy better than the 1.8 and the transmission is great. I feel lucky getting the last model year of the Corolla with a manual. It actually makes me really sad that the SE manual wasn't more popular. Toyota made an exceptional car. It's a shame it went underappreciated by the masses.
I totally agree with you. I just picked up my manual 2 days ago. I waited 6 months for it. I was not going to buy an automatic and was willing to wait. So glad I did. What a fun drive - though I would prefer an old skool parking brake. I'm not into the electronic one.
@@tanyacaruana7917 I would have preferred the old school brake too but the EPB is growing on me. It is mostly quite competent. I find the hold function to be useless on actual, steep hills and only use the parking brake for hill starts. Works great. Really not bad at all but I do find the a really steep hills a bit stressful still if you are parked between cars. Manual hand brake would be better in that case. Just took delivery of a base LE and I'm happy with my decision. Re choice of transmission. Toyota CVT all the way. I know people love hating on CVTs but I can tell u always driving a stick can get old (doing errands, driving in heavy traffic, etc). Stick is maybe a good choice if it's available and if it's for a second car
At one time, the original VW Beetle was the top selling of all time. The Corolla not only beat out the the Beetle, but also the Ford F-150. Not an easy feat. I'm showing my age, but my parents brought me home from the hospital when I was born in a 75 Corolla two door. Mom still has a Toyota today (2016 Camry) and swears by them. as do I. My 22 Tacoma TRD Sport has been fun. I forgot how much fun a pickup can be sometimes. I can't wait to drive a Corolla GR. That should give the VW GTI and Civic Si a run for their money for sure.
Bought my 2022 manual last year. Its a great car and fun to drive but I have to say I love the look of the new redesigned Prius. Of course Prius doesn't come with a manual so I will keep my Corolla and it will probably out live me.
Great video. I currently drive the 2016 Corolla S in black sand pearl. It's an awesome car and has given me no problems in the 3 years I've owned it. Still gets 37mpg combined!! I saw the new 22 Corolla yesterday and had to turn my head to check it out as it drove past me. Like the car here it was an SE. What a beauty! The only thing I do not like is the back tail lights. They are so small compared to the "16 S model. Also the spoiler does not cover the whole trunk like the '16. I've never been a fan of the floating iPad either. It just looks tacked on to me. But hey if that's all I don't like that's saying a lot! Also the '16 I own does not come with Safety Sense and the '22 does. Do want to buy or trade in my Corolla but I just paid it off! Sigh...Might have to wait!
@@brianruperti Just bought mine yesterday! Same color, different interior color, black. Only had to wait two and a half weeks after the deposit here in California. This video helped me make the final decision. Thanks for the video again.
@@brianruperti Yep, the TNGA platform makes a world of difference! I've test driven a few 2020-2021 Corolla SE's and the suspension is surprisingly supple and smooth for being sport tuned with 18" tires. It's an excellent driving car. And the interior is a significant upgrade over the LE.
But please be advised if you do that, you won’t be able to see the warning if it’s actually warning you when there is a passenger and the airbag remains off! This could be deadly.
Great vid. This car though, although it's really nice actually, lost me at CVT. I want an actual 6 speed auto. Any hope for the future ? I can hope. I'd like to have one to put in the drive, next to the 4Runner , for commuting. First i need to win some lottery though LOL. Nice job again Brian !

Hey Dan awesome story and thank you for the kind words. No options that I know of. I just bought a used 2022 Corolla SE with about 8900 miles on it. Anyone have issues with their front driver's seat? After driving it for about 30 minutes, the driver's seat was very uncomfortable. I feel like the seats aren't wide enough (I'm 5'9" about 200 lbs). Feel pain on my right hamstrings and right butt, it's like the wedges on the bottom are digging into my hamstring and butt. I rented a Ford Fiesta a few weeks back and drove 4 - 6 hours one way and no issues. If any of yall have any solutions (besides selling the car), any help would be appreciated.
Online you can find some really nice cushions for driving. Might I add, changing the angles of your legs sometimes helps. Perhaps sitting further away or reclining back a bit. I hope something helps!
Those aftermarket heated seats look clean. What brand do you guys use? What was the additional cost for that? Does it heat the bottoms and back? Thanks
@@wtfx5757 Oh yes sorry I forgot this car had that. I’m not sure of the brand but they’re $349/seat and I think it’s just the bottom. I’ll double check when I’m back at the office.
I have heard bad things about CVT transmissions in that they don't last long as the manufactures put it in for cost cutting measures as CVT transmissions have to be replaced. They cannot be repaired and are very expensive to buy. I mean you want the transmission to last longer than the car payments. I understand CVT transmissions don't act like normal automatics and feel different and are noisy. I have never driven any CVT car. I believe on these cars that a 6 spd. manual will make it more enjoyable and fun to drive. I don't know what the 0-60 acceleration times are or the top end speed of these economy cars are. I would be interested in knowing what kind of straight line performance to expect on the Corolla Hatchback in both transmissions as well as weight difference. I know the CVT transmissions do give better MPG over the 6 spd. I would be very interested in seeing a video on the Corolla 6 spd. hatchback that you mentioned.
Yes the CVT is much diff than the manual but the Toyota CVT is very reliable. Not all CVTs are built the same. Would you be interested in a video on the 2021 XSE hatch that I drive?
@@brianruperti I have heard Nissan CVT are real bad. I don't know about Honda CVT or even the Honda Turbo engines as to how reliable they are and as a car which car is more reliable the Corolla or the Civic? Seems to be that Honda has chosen the Turbo since 2016? Toyota hasn't yet for whatever reason gone Turbo yet. Whenever I hear Turbo I take that as an extra item that will cost more $$$ to repair/replace when it does go out. I tend to keep my cars 10 to 20+ years so eventually something will go wrong in that amount of time and show up on that Turbo. Yes I would be very interested in a video on your 2021 XSE hatch. What are the differences if any between 2021 and 2022 XSE Corolla hatch?
@@microminiskirt Nissan CVTs have a history of issues. And nothing much has changed so I will work on making that video happen for you. I agree about the turbos.
@@brianruperti Thank you for making that video happen....Is this the reason why Honda dropped in the reliability ratings because of the Turbo? The Toyota has a reputation of reliability and lasting a long time going over 200,000+ miles. Honda has the reputation of being more of a driver enthusiast fun car to drive where Toyota is known as driving an appliance.
@@microminiskirt Honda has a history of weak transmissions (not as bad as Nissan) and has had their fair share of turbo and oil dilution issues. They also had cracking engine blocks issues on the 2007 generation civics.
I'm waiting to receive this car from the dealer. I had a 2004 Corolla that I drove to 400k miles. My only concern on this car is the CVT's longevity. What are your thoughts on this?
@@brianruperti What are the differences in acceleration 0-60 MPH and top end speeds on CVT and 6 spd. manual Corolla? I know the CVT gets better gas mileage.
I was looking for a new car for my daughter this spring. I figured a Corolla would be the best bet over all. I spoke with the salesman and he had two Corolla LE's coming in. One was being built in the States and one was on the ship from Japan. So I chose the USA built one because it would only take one month to get to the dealership. That is real good in today's climate. (I wanted to beat the Loan Rate Increase which we did) Turned out to be a Corolla LE for $22K and change. No Packages on it. However, it has the All Weather Mats (even in the trunk) and Mud Guards. My daughter loves this little car. She has to commute to work and gets 38mpg. The next best thing to a Hybrid. And $22+K is pretty much 'Used Car Pricing'. Sure it has the 1.8L engine but it still can get up to highway speed 'fast enough'. The only thing I wish she had was Blind Spot Monitors on it. Great little cars....
You can actually set up your mirrors to not have any blind spots, a car can be in “my blindspot” and I’ll still be able to see the car entirely until it’s slightly ahead of me… saves you about $1000 for the feature
@@brianruperti I know but Subaru has a quad exhaust on one of theirs, and the corolla hatch back has dual square exhaust!!! That's hot!! Or at least one single on each side.

I wish we had them in the USA they took them away also!
@@brianruperti 😮
No push button start????? My 2021 corolla SE has it.
Looks good but I would want a sunroof.
It’s available!
Do those wheels fit on a 2019 se?
Not sure but I think the bolt pattern is the same
I just bought a used 2022 Corolla SE with about 8900 miles on it.
Thanks
The seats in the Corolla are actually from the factory!
@@brianruperti yes I realize that, I’m talking about the heated elements the customer had added to this particular vehicle aftermarket.
@@wtfx5757 Oh yes sorry I forgot this car had that. I’m not sure of the brand but they’re $349/seat and I think it’s just the bottom. I’ll double check when I’m back at the office.
My 22 xse came with heated seats bottom and back.
What type of tires does this car have and can this vehicle be used for Uber and lyft drivers
All season slim profile and yes it can
I have heard bad things about CVT transmissions in that they don't last long as the manufactures put it in for cost cutting measures as CVT transmissions have to be replaced.
400k is awesome. The CVT will be fine.
@@brianruperti the funny thing is it was still driving fine. I sold it for 500$
@@brianruperti What are the differences in acceleration 0-60 MPH and top end speeds on CVT and 6 spd. manual Corolla? I know the CVT gets better gas mileage.
@@microminiskirt I don’t know the specs but the manual is faster
@@brianruperti That's good enough for me.
(I wanted to beat the Loan Rate Increase which we did)
Turned out to be a Corolla LE for $22K and change.
Hey thanks for sharing! Nice find with a little bit of luck there too!
You can actually set up your mirrors to not have any blind spots, a car can be in “my blindspot” and I’ll still be able to see the car entirely until it’s slightly ahead of me… saves you about $1000 for the feature
Is this a Japan made one?
Yes
This should have exhaust on both sides. Quad
That’s a lot of pipes for not a lot of power!
@@brianruperti I know but Subaru has a quad exhaust on one of theirs, and the corolla hatch back has dual square exhaust!!! That's hot!!
Or at least one single on each side.
@@antoniocognato5023 Yes that would be cool on a faster hatch version
❤
MT is more fun to drive!!
True
If it's not manual it's no good
