  • Rather than spending hours wielding an axe to split hundreds of logs, I have invested in a hydraulic log splitter to speed up the process and this video shows you how it works and my thoughts on it.

    I have a log burner and always got free wood from people I know who cut their trees. If you have so many you can do what I did. I dug holes in areas of garden that’s not used and put in logs half way down and recover. This is fantastic for our declining native stag beetles. You have the perfect environment for them 😊

    I have a very similar splitter, branded as a Scheppach but probably built in the same chinese factory. With regards to exploding logs, I have had that happen and a piece of the log shot backwards and lodged in my face visor just in front of my eye.I have fitted the safety cage to stop that happening in future. I`m not one of those who tell you to wear all the PPE under the sun but I would just point out that standing where you are in the vid will not necessarily keep you from being hit, when the logs explode they don`t always throw everything forward. Keep safe,

    I find that there are times when I need to hold the log down while running the machine so I bought a 15A momentary contact foot pedal switch. The splitter plugs into the foot pedal and the foot pedal plugs into the mains, this frees up one hand.
    I think the majority of the noise is coming from the pump, not the motor.

    Sell these splitters where I work and have to agree with your review.
    They are good, I've only ever seen one returned within warranty and it was dealt with well.
    Totally agree with the assessment of the legs, worth the extra.

    I have the screwfix version of this & highly recommend it. You really do need to fix it down to a trolley. As you pointed out they are heavy & unstable. I'm thinking about drilling the pusher plate & fitting a short spike as on occasion logs slip sideways on the initial push. Anyone in doubt, these machines are very powerfull & cope with anything I'veput it up against including very knotty logs!

    I have had a log splitter for a few years, Mine came with legs which was a huge benifit, but no "length lock" which I might build in. Although I use the full length of the drive to have 2 logs being pushed and then droping the next log in place to push through. The other thing to bear in mind, is, if you are cutting your own wood prior to splitting, you can determine the cut length and stick to that which makes splitting far easier as you don't have to adjust for length. Sharpen the wedge too!

  • @tazmaniandevil1503
    @tazmaniandevil1503 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have one very similar to that too. Don't remember the name off-hand, but almost identical. We buy in our firewood from a ready to burn certified source, but many of the logs are too big for our inset stove. I split the logs manually with a small hand axe & club hammer for the first four years, but as I near 60 I'm less inclined to do so. The splitter makes short work of the logs. What used to take me most of a day can now be done in around an hour. I have no idea whether mine has the length lock. I suppose that will teach me to read the instructions in future.

    Would be interesting to see how that would cope with wet hard wood. That stuff you are splitting is so dry you could split it with a toothbrush. Not sure about the exploding logs either. I have a horizontal splitter and it doesn't do anything like that when you use it.

  • @grahamheath3799
    @grahamheath3799 ปีที่แล้ว

    My father always talked of the three warms of wood when you cut the tree down when you cut and split and then the shortest of all when you finally burn it. Lol.
    Agree that when the log splits suddenly it's quite fun. Did manage to hit my hand once not too disastrous though.
    I tend to use mine on the ground and that can be a pain in the back.

    We have a similar one-ton one in our utility room in the house, and it also makes the lights "blink" when you power it on. Those machines must draw out a ton of power.
    Use mine on the floor tho, so it's a PITA.

    A much cheaper alternative, that would also serve to keep you warm while splitting, is the wood grenade, a four-way wedge that splits logs into quarters and only costs around £15.

    It looked like it used quite a lot of the electricity grid you've got in your shed, the lights went out each time you turned it on :D Must admit, the "exploding wood" was quite scary to see at first, but somewhere also satisfying, especially since it does fly away from you. Luckily!

    I used to have a Harbor Freight (USA) 5 ton splitter very much like this splitter. I found only a few logs it couldn't split. For the money, I think it is a good machine for a homeowner. My splitter didn't come with legs or cage. I would usually put it on my truck's tailgate to use.

    Looks like a decent enough machine, Stuart! It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation: you're cold, so you'll need to chop firewood. Then you get warm, so you don't need the firewood... You solved this problem by buying this log splitter. You are a smart man!

    My log splitter looks the same as yours except it's labeled Scheppach! I've had it a few years now and it still works well. The knob for adjusting the length of logs doesn't lock very well now. Also mine struggles with knotty wood where branches have joined the main trunk. I think I need to top up the hydraulic fluid as it needs a service after all this time.

Are there any local bylaws limiting the level of sound / noise you can generate for what will be an increasing necessity - cutting wood for firewood?
