    Ben, I'm somewhere between a beginner and intermediate Thai learner. I find that your lessons are the best I have seen here on TH-cam for anyone going to Thailand for vacation. I recommend them often.

    Hey Ben! You do a great job explaining the structure of the language in this video, keep it up! I love to see a follow up video with common Thai dishes as an example (helps with learning language and culture!). Looking forward to more videos :)

    Thank you for this video. I do not eat meat and find it hard to order. I end up eating a lot of fried vegetables and rice. What is the best way to ask for a green curry with vegetables or to say I am vegetarian? Kha

    • @learnthaibyben9670
      @learnthaibyben9670  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Mooch :) Thanks for coming over to my channel naka :) To stick to your vegetarian or vegan diet in Thailand, it's helpful to understand the Thai view of vegetarianism."Vegetarian" loosely translates to "mang sa wirat" (มังสวิรัติ), a word that specifies you don't eat noticeable pieces of meat or seafood. Everything else -- including eggs, meat stock, fish sauce or other animal products -- is fair game. Just not chunks of meat. Vegan translates similarly to the Thai word "jay" (เจ), referring to a person who eats no meat, no seafood, no animal by products, no garlic, and even excludes a few herbs and vegetables that have too pungent of a flavor.
      The first thing you'll need to do is tell the cook or waiter that you are vegetarian: "ben mang sa wirat" (เป็นมังสวิรัต). To play it completely safe, you can say "gin jay" กินเจ). When you order your dish, emphasize again that you are vegetarian and make sure to mention that you want your food without any form of meat ("mai gin neua sat" ไม่กินเนื้อสัตว์). After that you can give further personal requests like no fish sauce ("mai ow nam bplaa" ไม่เอานำ้ปลา) or no oyster sauce ("mai ow nam man hoy" ไม่เอาน้ำมันหอย).
      For example:"kor keaeng Kiew kwaan jay/ mang sa wirat kha / krup"( Can I have vegetarian green curry please )
      Actually, there're other popular Thai dishes that you can try on like Gaeng om (แกงอ่อม) by ordering it without any kind of meat (mai sai neua sat ไม่ใส่เนื้อสัตว์) and without shrimp paste (mai sai kaphi ไม่ใส่กะปิ), Pad pak ruam prik gaeng (ผัดผักรวมพริกแกง) (mai sai neua sat ไม่ใส่เนื้อสัตว์) or fish sauce (mai sai nam bplaa ไม้ใส่นำ้ปลา), Som tam Thai (ส้มตำไทย) without dried shrimp (mai sai goong haeng ไม่ใส่กุ้งแห้ง) and without fish sauce (mai sai nam bplaa ไม่ใส่น้ำปลา) etc.
      Hope it will be helpful for you ;)

    +Learn Thai by Ben You are very charming, thank you for making these videos. I am just starting to learn Thai, and I am so confused. In English, Ben is a mans name, and moo ( pork ) is the sound that a cow makes, and gai, ( chicken ) pronounced like " guy "
    is a male person.
    So I hope when I get to Thailand and ask for some gai and some moo to be delivered to my apartment, some man with a cow does not come to my door .

      LOL you're funny ! I think you''ve got a funny sense/tips to remember Thai vocabularies and it's good starting :) btw I'm glad that you considered my name as 'human' some of my friends call me 'Benji' sound like a puppy to me :D
      PS. my name 'Ben' = Five in Pali Language ka ;)

      lol Your funny too. When I first saw your thumbnail that said Learn Thai by Ben, I thought " I don't want to learn Thai from a man, I want to learn Thai from a pretty girl " Then when I started the video, I said oh look Ben is a pretty girl. I will have to have a talk with your friends though because Benji was the name of 5 movies from the 1970s starring a dog named Benji.

      +Learn Thai by Ben Yes it was a very pleasant surprise indeed. You may not be as fluffy as a puppy, but you are way more cuddlable, and snuggable. ( Those are not real words, so don't quote me. ) I invented them based on cuddle and snuggle. See how easy English is, I can just make up words if I want to.

    +Learn Thai by Ben I'm starting to get the hang of this. So if I want some chicken fried rice, I ask for " cow fat guy " and when I want an iced drink I ask for some Japanese money.

      Hi Ian :) you can make it shorten by saying ' Chan or Pom Ao/Khor Nam Ron' When you ask for sth you can use the word 'Khor' = Ask as well :)

    I found this video helpful, but it would have been much better without the music. I find Thai so complicated that the least background noise the easiest it is to understand the nuances of pronunciation, and it wasn't very easy this time.
