Lol glad we got you to react to this movie. Now you will have at minimum one of these songs stuck in your head like the rest of us. The story, in my opinion, is eh granted I don’t come from a close knit family so that may be why, but the music makes up for the story. My favorite to is the Bruno song and Surface Pressure.

Another fun fact: the first photo the family took in Antonio's room was the grandmother's perfect version of the family, without Mirabel. You can see the grandma's face was strained. The photo at the end was imperfect, but had everyone in the family and they were all happier.

Personally I theorize that the miracle actually was born out of Abuela's grief. In the flashback it doesn't appear until she falls to the ground sobbing, and then it flings the guerillas back. But being born out of grief and trauma it wasn't sustainable, which is why the miracle had to basically be reborn through Mirabel's love for her family and ability to bring them all together.

Interesting. My stance was that (I believe) Isabela is the oldest grandchild and Abuela was very happy to have a grandchild and doted on her, and then Isabela’s gift was growing plants and considering she was five it likely shown itself in flowers, a pretty thing a young girl would enjoy, and she got locked into this and didn’t explore what else she was capable of. So she became the beautiful beloved eldest grand daughter with big expectations on her shoulders. Abuela didn’t realize what a burden she put on her family

The fact that “We don’t talk about Bruno” has the feel of a Disney Villain song and is also the song that most clearly reveals the true villain of the piece is the pressure to appear perfect and the strain that puts on everyone in the family just hits like a ton of bricks.

I think Casita is “haunted” by Pedro. I imagine as he’s walking toward the militia, the only thing giving him courage is picturing the town and house his family would grow up in and be safe in. And when he performed his act of true love by sacrificing himself, his soul got tied to the candle and house. So he got to help raise his kids and grandkids and be with his wife. So like, I totally agree that it was Pedro’s sacrifice that made the magic.

    • @eduardon9299
      @eduardon9299 2 ปีที่แล้ว +170

I think the miracle is a combination of many factors: the love energy originated from Abuelo's sacrifice, the grief from Abuela's tears spilled on the ground, Abuelo's spirit trying to save his family by becoming one with the candle, and also some divine intervention/justice (since God/saints/angels intervening when good virtuous people suffer some kind of injustice are common occurences/stories in Latino American culture and popular Catholicism. The town in wich Encanto is located on is also clearly and heavily influenced by Catholicism, as we can see with the priest and the local church)

Can we talking about Bruno being a homie? Bruno resembles his father. He's selfless, loves his family enough to separate himself from them and 'sacrifice' himself if that means that his family would be happy. Just like his father did.
He was described as Seven foot frame by Camilio (shape-shifting boy) probably because he was a kid and Bruno just seemed tall to him. Plus after years of hearing bad stories about it, it probably elevated that image to about seven foot, towering, creepy man.

    To answer some questions:
    1. It sounds like Hamilton because Lin Manuel Miranda wrote both.
    2. Her mother healed her with an arepa con queso. It’s made with corn flour and filled with cheese, they’re really good and there’s recipes online but Colombian ones are different from arepas in other countries.
    3. Her name is Mirabel. Her sisters are Isabela and Luisa and her parents are: Julieta who heals with food and her father who married into the family.
    4. The other two adults are her aunt and uncle, and the rest of the kids are her cousins.
    5. The instrument you were referring to is the accordion. It’s very popular in Colombian music, particularly the genre Vallenato.
    6. Abuela or abuelita work. Abuelita is just in the diminutive, which sounds sweeter.
    Here’s some fun facts:
    1. The guy Isabela was supposed to marry is voiced by a very famous Colombian singer named Maluma.
    2. The second song played in the movie and the last is sung by another very famous Colombian singer named Carlos Vives.
    3. Colombian families definitely center a lot around the grandmother, at least in my own experience since I was born there and lived there for most of my life.
    4. In Luisa’s song, when the donkey’s are dancing, they’re on top of a very particular hat which is very common in Colombia.
    5. The song played during the grandmother’s flashback near the end of the movie is called Dos Oruguitas, meaning two little caterpillars. It’s sung by a Colombian singer named Sebastian Yatra and the song is actually very very beautiful. There’s the version is English, and while it isn’t perfect, it’ll give you the gist of what the song means.
    6. The violence the grandmother was escaping from is caused by a number of things, often terrorism in the country. It refers to forced displacement which many Colombians know too well, unfortunately. That detail is very personal so it added a lot to the movie, I think.
    7. The majority of the food in the movie is definitely Colombian. The food the mom is feeding the people in line is called buñuelos. They’re really good. There’s the arepas. At the breakfast they’re eating huevos pericos, which are scrambled eggs with onion and tomato. There’s also arepuelas. At the dinner they’re eating a soup called ajiaco, one of my personal favorite foods.
    8. When Mirabel gives the little kid, her cousin Antonio, the stuffed toy at the start, she gestures to the box with her mouth. That’s a little habit many Colombians have too.
    9. When Dolores overhears Mirabel and her father talking about Bruno’s vision and Mirabel’s father says miercoles, it’s a tamer way of cursing. It literally translates to Wednesday, but when said in that context he’s cursing just not fully.
    10. All the animals and plants can be found in Colombia, which is the second most biodiverse country in the world.
Okay, I’m done. I wanted to clarify some cultural things here and there and answer some questions you had.

I’ve seen a lot people say that the reason Mirabel doesn’t get a gift is because she’ll be the keeper of the miracle after her grandmother passes and that she’ll be the new person in charge. The miracle/candle needs someone to keep the magic alive and that job will pass on to Mirabel :)

That and also, I believe the house the candle and house are the abuelos spirit. He saw how Abuela was losing her way, how she was effecting her family.
-Luisa thought she was nothing without her gift
-Isabella thought she MUST be perfect for Abuela and the family
-Pepa always had a cloud over her head and Abuela always tried repressing her emotions. "Pepa you have a CLOUD!!"
      ETC...
So Abuelo chose not to give Maribel a gift as a reminder that its the PEOPLE that matter, not the powers.
and also because she is the next keeper, so it's 2-fold.

@@shineinouzen7412 another good theory I’ve heard is that the magic was leaving because it was tearing the family apart. It originally came about to protect Alma and her babies. But when the magic became an obsession to Alma, who was scared that her family wouldn’t be strong or perfect enough to combat threats to their home, it started to leave because it was contributing to the opposite effect.
Another good one is that since Mirabel and Alma have the same gift, the contrasting grapple for control of the house which grew with both of them not being on the same page for what the family needs ended up destroying the house.

The plot of this movie is SO simple...the main character doesn't go anywhere other than her own house, no grand adventure, no villain to overcome or defeat...it's so simple....and yet it's so, so good. the emotional depth of it, and the relatableness of dealing with interfamily conflict and pressure...genuinely I'm impressed. you don't need a complicated plot or a standard 'hero's journey' if you land the emotional beats.

Honestly, it’s the fact that this movie’s plot is so simple that I actually didn’t like it nearly as much as I thought I would the first time. The trailers I saw pictured this epic fantasy adventure, with monsters and floods and lots and lots of stairs. The family’s gifts are going out of control, so Mirabel has to go on a journey to restore the miracle as the only one unaffected with the help of cute comic sidekick Antonio and goofy estranged Uncle Bruno.
I expected an epic fantasy. I was disappointed for like half the runtime because we never left the house and every character had their one plot beat onscreen before leaving, but then I started focusing on the actual story, thought back on the movie and got hooked on the soundtrack. And I realized that instead, for maybe the first time ever, we got a movie that was solely about raw, surprisingly realistic family drama for a story about a magical family. And I love it. This movie is so fantastic and again, it’s REALISTIC. Like every single character feels like a CHARACTER. Not a plot device or padding or comic relief. Just about everyone in this family is flawed in some way, and the way it was portrayed is beautiful.

“Mirabel is a beautiful name” I agree and here is something I noticed right away in the theater it’s long but I promise I find it fascinating… first time watching this I immediately noticed this movies emphasis on sight, but the motif shows up exclusively within abuela and Mirabels dynamic. Their motif shows up in their lines when they’re talking to each other “until I lost sight of who our miracle was for…” “I can finally see” even abuelas opening line is ‘open your eyes’. As I kept thinking about it it finally hit me; sight is associated with truth and being the windows to the soul. This movie is centered around Mirabel trying to find the truth and abuela accepting things that she mistook for a miracle, becoming unclouded. It’s literally their journey into understanding each other and finding the truth and seeing each other for all that they are I.e ‘what do you see. ‘Me,all of me’. I also find it as a cool detail that abuelas name is Alma, which means soul, and if you shorten mirabels name to ‘mira’ it means ‘look’.

6:11 Abuella’s tough on Mirabel because of generational trauma. Immigrant elders or elders who are obsessed with making sure their family will never suffer through similar hardships can be perfectionists, almost bordering on the extreme. They want their children and their children’s children to make “perfect choices” to avoid the trauma/hardships they went through, so they put a lot of pressure. Unfortunately generational trauma has a habit of continuing the cycle. I’m really glad this movie portrayed this type of common family dynamic very well and addressed what many families of this dynamic often fail at: healing.

For a few moments it appeared as if one of them had died in the attempt.
Abuela had two choices here- accept that she has instilled in her family that only the magic matters which has destroyed her family or continue on in denial and anger. We see plenty of times that despite her faults Abuela genuinely loves her family. She was always going to chose them over everything else, even the magic.

This movie probably hit hard for a lot of people with a lot of dysfunction in their families. It certainly did for me. Often times our elders in an attempt to make sure we have better lives than them get to focused on their own idea of "better life" and end up pushing their families to the brink like this because they are so unwilling to see past their own experiences or In some cases its active narcissism and wanting to be in control of everyone and everything so that they can take the credit for the "perfection" they've made. Its likely why some people have a hard time stomaching the quick forgiveness towards the end because in reality that type of hurt doesn't just go away.

@@guilty_as_sin I feel like this wouldn't work as well as Abuela admitting she was wrong and doing better. Part of the point of Abuela's character arc is to stop defining her family by their magical abilities and start valuing them for who they are. Having Bruno tell her to prove to Abuela that she's worthy feels like more of the same. Vs Abuela coming to Mirabel and saying "I was wrong, I was acting the way I did because of trauma and that was wrong and I'm sorry" and then actively trying to be nicer. The point of the movie is that unhealthy family dynamics can be at play under the surface and drive everyone insane, and the magic came back when they started working together as a family. Having to prove to Abuela that she is worthy of magic would be flying in the face of the moral of Encanto, which is that bad family dynamics can be helped with some understanding of each other.

@@roryhillsbury100 I get that and I also come from a pretty narcissistic household, but I have a much easier time forgiving the ones who have actively taken accountability and made steps toward self-improvement. (Which means they probably aren't entirely narcissistic and any behaviors like it are likely due to being twisted by the narcissists around them) Abuela is largely portrayed as well-meaning but her trauma causes her to fear losing everything, which is why she keeps such a controlled grip on everything. Once she realizes she's driving her family insane and the community gives back by rebuilding the house, she relaxes and starts to move past her trauma (finally). I didn't take the last scene as "they forgave Abuela instantly," I kinda didn't expect Disney to go into the healing process. It mostly showed that their home is now built on a more solid foundation than magic and Abuela has finally learned to relax (she even takes off the mourning shawl, a clear symbol of her finally moving past the trauma). Abuela apologizing and actually showing that she changed probably would do a lot to help people forgiving her. Then again, Abuela is portrayed as being strict but generally well-intentioned (but ruled by her fear). I'm not sure your grandmother has such noble intentions as wanting to keep the family safe and secure. I know as a kid from a dysfunctional household, Mirabel calling her out, and then Abuela doing what a lot of abusers won't, felt REALLY gratifying though it did bring up trauma and sad feelings that some of the worst in my family would never do that.

But either because she is nearing the end of her life or because she lost her way, Mirabelle was called as the next in line to lead and keep the family safe and happy. The fact that the house gets newly build in her image and with her love and caring as "foundation" emphasizes that.

in spanish "abuela" means grandmother and when you add "ita" or "ito" to a word, it either means "small" or is meant as a term of endearment. so in effect, abuela and abuelita are both correct 😊

@@Zarab923 well translated literally, yes, but in context it's meant as a term of endearment because in spanish little things are thought to be cute and endearing. for example, if someone's name is Carlos, they might be called Carlito as a term of endearment which literally translates to "little Carlos"; but they are actually being called Carlito as a way of showing affection, not because they are little. I hope that makes sense.

The thing I love about movies like this is that either people from the same culture can relate to it because of their shared background, or the rest of us can relate to it because of the shared family dynamics and situations. I am totally just like Luisa, her song resonated with me to the core! I am the eldest daughter in a large family, and I was always the one holding everyone else up. I now have suffered serious health problems (recent kidney transplant) and have felt lost not being the one to carry everyone else. This was one of the best Disney movies in years, in my opinion!

Mirabel's gift is empathy! That wouldn't give her a door because it's not a physical gift. But throughout the entire movie she comforts the family and helps them open up about feelings they kept locked away. First Antonio, then Luisa, then Bruno, then Isabela and lastly Abuela Madrigal. Without her they would have constantly kept their feelings to themselves and broken the family apart (even if we don't look at the miracle).
The reason why I think she got is because on the night where she got the gift there was a "M" on the doorknob. Everyone gets their own letter so why would the door do that and then not give her a gift? In the end her gift was being there for the family. That's why she could restore the miracle, it's because she fixed the family.

So my boyfriend and i watched the movie
And he actually told me about a theory about the family's gifts being something they loved doing in childhood. Before Antonio got his gift, Mirabel mentioned that he loved animals and when he got his gift, it was connected with animals.
So we started to think of what the other members of the family did-
Julieta: she most likely loved cooking with her mom as a little girl, her motto was probably "good food is medicine for the soul" or something along those lines. so when she came of age, her gift was healing people with food
Pepa: she probably loved going outside to play when she was younger, no matter the weather. whenever she has a negative emotion, it could be because her mother always pulled her inside and yelled at her for playing outside in certain weather conditions (rain, snow, etc.), so she connected those with negative emotions.
Bruno: He most likely made so many cootie catchers/paper fortune tellers and had a box just overflowing with them. When people asked what he was doing he would always say "i’m telling the future!"
Dolores: she probably eavesdropped a lot when she was little, she always wanted to know what the adults were talking about because she wanted to seem like a young lady
Camilo: he most likely played pretend a lot or like to mimic people since he thought it was funny
Isabela: we both agreed that she would go outside and pick flowers to make into flower crowns or to give to her mom
Luisa: we both thought it was so funny to think that she would try to pick up things that were much too heavy for her to help out or just throw rocks at people-

@@butterflygirl141 Abuela's gift was her family's survival through the candle, flame, valley, and their magic sparked by Pedro's sacrifice which helped keep them all safe. But she wouldn't live forever and for the magic and family to continue they needed a new family heart, a new flame. Mirabel's gift didn't activate on her 5th birthday because she wasn't old enough to take her place at the heart and head of the family, yet. So long as the candle still burned Mirabel couldn't ascend to her own power. At 15 you see signs that it's about to activate as Casita obeys her above all others, even disobeying the other family members and pushing them out of the house but obeying Mirabel's command to get her to the candle, which only goes out when she's touching it. The house started breaking apart because the family was no longer united behind one heart, as well, between Abuela's unreasonable expectations and Mirabel's more empathetic approach. She even gifted Antonio a representation of what his powers would be and touched him before he touched the candle.
The movie constantly compared the magic, family, and Mirabel to a butterfly. Abuela's gift and leadership was them as a caterpillar, getting established and growing. Mirabel and her more healthy leadership is the butterfly. Like a caterpillar, they had to go through a metamorphosis and the original form had to be destroyed for it to reach it's full potential. New family members will get their gift from Mirabel's touch, now, and eventually one of her grandchildren will have the door disappear the same way hers did, signifying the heir has been chosen, though they may need to wait for Mirabel's death to get their magic since the family no longer needs a traumatic transformation to be healthy and stable.

Of course she was...because she was jealous of Mirabel since Mirabel actually had the luxury of being an imperfect person.
Mirabel just never recognized that because she'd only ever considered her own perspective.
Which is unfortunately something that WE ALL tend to do. It's hard enough for us to come to terms with OUR OWN perspectives...so too often we completely overlook the need to consider the perspectives of others as well.

It's great to see someone who is old, proud and made sacrifices own up to their mistakes to someone they're supposed to be respected by, to someone who they had previously blamed for the things that went wrong. I don't see older people take responsibility often, especially in family.
