'World's Loneliest Elephant' Makes Friend at Sanctuary in Cambodia | NowThis

Kaavan, ‘the world’s loneliest elephant’, got to meet another of his kind for the first time in 8 years after arriving at a sanctuary in Cambodia. The two were introduced through a fence, where they touched trunks. Kaavan, a 36-year-old male elephant, was recently rescued from a zoo in Pakistan where he had been living alone in subpar conditions since his partner’s death in 2012.

His rescue marks the culmination of years of efforts by various animal rescue orgs, as well as singer Cher. Once Kaavan has had more time to adjust to his new home in Cambodia, he will be introduced to more elephants.

Going to the zoo used to be a family event just like the cinema back then. Now that we know better and its no longer a trend, this will hit the zoos revenue the hardest especially during Covid-19. So the animals are the ones that suffer. Sanctuaries are much better suited to care for wild animals. Less exposure to humans and more care for animals.

I'm thankful for everyone who helped by petitioning, sending letters, and all sorts of staff, especially Cher who even created a foundation to provide a more legal team. Her vocal commitment made such a big difference in setting Kavaan free. and take note, one politician from Pakistan even wanted Cher to endorse the politician in exchange for setting Kavaan free, and Cher gladly refused.

Literally solitary confinement for being interesting. This makes me think of the cubs from tiger king. They would rip 1 hour old cubs away from their mothers. And this guy saying hed gladly pay to play with tiger cubs.

Kavaan needs time to adjust to his new home, the vet is taking good care of him, but he made a friend with the elephant in the stall across from him but soon he will be with the other elephants at the sanctuary
