So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they no-doubt-about-it should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. On previous episodes we have covered Message in a Bottle by The Police, In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins, and Just Like Heaven by the Cure. Today it’s all about the love power with Sowing the seeds of Love by Tears for Fears. An 80s psychedelic masterwork that was years in the making., but let’s explore how they got there…
English school friends Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith formed Tears for Fears after spending their teen years in bands together, including a ska revivalist outfit called Graduate. After Graduate split in 1981, the duo recorded demos as History of Headaches. Then under their new name, Tears for Fears, they signed with Phonogram Records. The band’s debut, 1983’s The Hurting, ascended to #1 on the UK Albums Chart. It featured #3 UK hit Mad World, as well as singles Pale Shelter and Change.
Their follow-up record sidestepped the sophomore slump in a big way. Songs from the Big Chair, released in 1985, reached #1 on the US Billboard 200, achieving multi-platinum status in both the US and the UK. Songs from the Big Chair kicked out two Billboard Hot 100 #1 hits: “Shout” and “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”. The latter won the Brit Award for Best British Single in 1986. Additionally, the single Head Over Heads reached #3 in the US.
Tears for Fears’ second record, Songs from the Big Chair, and their ensuing 1985 world tour elevated the musicians to bon-a-fide superstardom. This massive tour lasted just over a year and included a performance at the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards. Tears for Fears had become a juggernaut. With the backing of a nine-piece band, two Fairlight synthesizers, and a pocketful of Top 10 hits, Tears for Fears put on a nightly production fit to rule the world of 80s pop-rock disciples.
