  • Join Mike Muizebelt and Neils Kemp as they explore some of the features of the flagship APS-c PENTAX K-3 III. They discuss the optical viewfinder, as well as the level of customisation that PENTAX photographers have come to expect. They then explore different locations around The Netherlands to test out the performance of the camera in the field.

    Great to see a Pentax being used for wildlife in a video !!!

    Its is by far the most advanced APS-C DSLR made by any company. I've tested it next to the best from Canon and Nikon (systems I also own as well) and it beats them both in nearly every metric in terms of speed and image quality (the only stand out area is buffer depth, where the D500 had the edge). But as an all round tool, neither can compete to the K-3 Mark III. It's got so many more useable features that photographers appreciate, better IQ, better weather sealing, and better build quality (yes even more so than a 7D Mark II). It's a pity that the commercial review sites can't just be honest about how good it really is. I guess Sony, Canon, and Nikon do a good job of putting them in nice hotels, fancy restaurants, and paying for photo events they attend for free. If Ricoh/Pentax had even a small marketing budget for the US/EU, they would sell many more cameras by far.

    Nice follow-up video after more extensive use of the K-3 III, and it seems to have confirmed the high expectations raised by earlier impressions. 👍

      Thank you Marc! It was indeed good to talk about the camera again after using it extensively in the field! I'm about to pack my bag for a new trip and the K-3 mark III wil join me again :-)

    Which Pentax long lenses were you using for some of those wildlife shots ?

    Needs a tilt screen, what were Pentax thinking by leaving it off?

      Hi Paul, I've been using the Pentax DFA 150-450mm mostly for wildlife during this trip.

    Unfortunately it is impossible to try this camera in London anywhere. No shop I've been stocks a sample. The only option seems to be buy one and return if I'm not happy.

      Same in Denmark - ever since Pentax K3, Pentax has been close to non existent here too, or well is.... unless online.

    First of all, congratulations for some fantastic photos that you show in the video. I recently acquired K 1 Mark ll after weighing the pros and cons of K 3 Mark lll and K 1 Mark ll. One factor was the relative costs: I got a very good deal for the latter. I shoot wildlife with Nikon Z and Sony A7 R systems and sometimes Fujifilm XH system. So far I didn't get a chance to photograph wildlife with K 1 Mark ll. However, I will soon try it. In your experience, do you think it will be an inferior camera to K 3 Mark lll for wildlife?

    • @mikemuizebelt
      @mikemuizebelt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      First of all, congratulations on your purchase. The K-1 mark II is not inferior - far from it. I used the camera since 2016 for my wildlife with great succes, the K-3 mark III however is more specialised in the AF department en is a bit quicker. The K-1 is more landscape oriented. But if you get to know your camera, you can use the K-1 mark II for wildlife just as well. (Or the K-3 for landscapes ;-))

      Hi! I'm too on the fence now between k1 ii and k3 iii. How does it work for you in wildlife photography?

  • @eatsfats8497
    @eatsfats8497 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Talks about the great high ISO performance ... and then shows off a bunch of fantastic photos, all at ISO 100🤔
    For me the best part of shooting Pentax is it is somehow much more pleasurable experience than other makes I've tried, but I cannot pinpoint why exactly.

    • @mikemuizebelt
      @mikemuizebelt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lot's bright days and a tripod made sure I could use ISO 100 a lot. Always strive for the lowest ISO to have the best image quality. Incorporating ISO 1600 images in a video won't show the viewer anything about the quality anyway. But believe me, it has improved again over the mark II.

    • @theharper1
      @theharper1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a custom mode for wildlife where auto-ISO is up to 10,000. The improvement in high ISO over the original K3 is amazing.

  • @PiDsPagePrototypes

    Were any parts of this video filmed on the K-3-3 ?
    Any plans to cover the mess they've made of the video side of the firmware?
    One of the disapointments of the last decade of Pentax models, is how poorly the video featurs have been managed, on bodies that have colour science that is the equal or better of most Cinema cameras - Pentax could be out-selling Blackmagic Designs Super35 sensor bodies with a little effort.

    • @theharper1
      @theharper1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried 4K on my K3iii and it's fine. Maybe you could be more specific? In my case, I generally want to move around a lot with video, and I don't plan to spend thousands on a gimbal, so I have a camcorder. The K3iii video is fine for cinematography style shooting.

    • @PiDsPagePrototypes
      @PiDsPagePrototypes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theharper1 It's far from 'fine'. Like most Pentax bodies, the HDMI output appears to be useless for recording externally. The internal data rate is pathetically low (For h.264, HD1080 should be a minimum of 50mbits per second, and 4K at least 200mbits). The lack of a premium tilt screen killed any potential video sales, and the frame rates are NTSC only, no 25 or 50 fps at all, so my K-01 and K-5 bodies have more useful framerates for places outside of the US and Japan. The extra crop on 4K I could almost live with.

    • @PiDsPagePrototypes
      @PiDsPagePrototypes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theharper1 Your comment in there about gimbals is silly. Gimbals work just as well on Camcorders as they do on DSLRs and MILCs. Not having a Gimbal should encourage you to use the K-3-3 for video more then a basic Camcorder, as its the first body since the K-5 to have the sensor-shift stabilisation in Video.

    To me the K3III is steeply overpriced anachronism. I still have the K5IIs and the K3 and the image quality still compares quite favourably.

    No Tilt Screen on this wonderful Camera,....the man for this choice is for Hell!
    I have the K1II,...the K70 and I was waiting for the K3III,...but without Tilt Screen I never bought the K3III.
    In my opinion the biggest mistake from Pentax, and Pentax loose many Photographers with this choice,...I'm shure.
    1.If you like Photos on the Ground or in spectacular Angels in "Portrait Format" you have too use the K70 with his Tilt Screen.
    2.The K1 Display ist very good for use on the Stativ, ...with "normal Format"on the ground is perfekt all so.
    3.The K3III is the best AF Cam from Pentax with the best APSC Sensor,but you can't go too the Ground without back pain and you have too use a Angel Finder,...I say,....WHAT!!!,....we are in 2023 Pentax!!!
    So you have too bought 3 Cams if you want the complete possibilities with a Pentax Cam!!!
    The good Chance, too built a "one fits all" Cam for Photographers is lost without Tilt Screen.
    I think this is politics,....or the decision of a non phographer ceo.
    So I use my K1 and the K70 further more with fun and will not invest in a K3III.
    "Pentax, a Cam for Fotographers",.......think about Pentax!
    This words are from a Pentax user of 3 Decades.

    Better bying a good old Nikon D500. How can a modern camera come out without a tilt screen??? Just buy the D500 with that fantastic almost perfect autofocus, plus image quality and you get it all, once you want a DSLR. I truly believe that PENTAX cameras produce amazing images, but, come on! No tilt screen??? Really? ANd you want to sell it toda, in 2024?

    Hi! i'm stuck between K1 ii and K3 iii. I know it won't compete with k1 ii in landscape photograhy, but still, is it good for landscapes? like it so much with all those new features and menu interface. i can live with the fixed screen too.
