Thank you Will for being honest, the fact that even Uncle Sully needs a little tune up sometimes made me realise that I keep having unrealistic expectations for my personal dog...
Yessss. My puppy is slowly learning this way. Bit harder cuz he’s small and I gotta make sure I’m not walking too fast. But even when I’m letting him run about he’s looking back periodically to see where I’m going.
I have to do this with my 15mth old German shepherd, some days he waljs great, other days we spend most of the walk changing directions. Its so annoying but worth it.
I do this on every walk..my dog is so smart that he can anticipate it..even if its never the same..but he walks very nicely on a loose leash..I like to stop a lot randomly to stop any pulling forward and specially at start because he is excited to go
I’ve tried everything you said. Slip lead, positive reinforcement and still my cocker spaniel pulls on his lead till he is almost cutting off his airway 🙈🤷🏼♀️ . He lays on the floor with a nose lead and constantly creates scratching his face trying to get it off and refuses to move. Looks almost crazy flailing around. He’s almost 5 months old and is otherwise perfectly behaved! Been trying daily for the last 6 weeks and it’s still not sinking in. I’m at a loss what else to try!
I feel your pain! I have had a rescue 16 month old cocker spaniel for a couple of months now. She pulls something chronic, but starts to work only after she's tired herself out. They are a different breed (literally), altogether. There instinct is to hunt. I'm going to try her at a gun dog training place near me as they know how to work with that particular breed and their traits, and how to direct their energy. You don't have to be into shooting per se, but their training methods are supposed to help. Hampshire Spaniel Training on TH-cam is also worth a follow. Good luck! I know I need it! 😂
For the cutting off his airway thing, I'm pretty sure it shouldn't happen if you put the slip leash on in the correct place, right behind the ears. Or you can try to use a harness and a slip at the same time so when your dog pulls, you hold him back with the harness and give a pop on the slip.
For sweet Mercy, man, Pleeeease show me (everyone) how to stop my puppy from 1) Putting every thing she can find ie: Not shoes or house items, BUT any and all trash on the side of the road or in the yard, any piece of discarded plastic, even chunks of broken glass, paper towel, wrappers, even cans! etc. In her mouth, chewing it, often SWALLOWING it, and 2) Not running away "playing" for minutes on end a game of 'catch me if you can' when I try to take said trash out of her mouth or get her to drop it. She's 15 weeks and damn near perfect. Leash walks, fetches like a champ, just so gooood, Smartest, most well behaved, eager to please pup I ever had but THIS omg... This is so hard on the nerves I can't take it, she's going to swallow something one of these times that will land her in hospital, or worse. The Catch me if you Can game is just the worst, so frustrating, and dangerous. Thanks for considering covering this topic. Cheers
Maybe you can teach your dog drop it. I taught mine by putting him on a leash (so he can't run away and make me chase him), encouraging him to bite a toy, and then get him to drop the toy by putting a treat near his mouth (or you can offer a toy he likes more if he is toy motivated) and when he gets it start introducing the drop it command.
@@sharoncunningham6826 thank you for replying with suggestions. Yes, I carry treats for positive reinforcement, and her fave stick... Which is quickly dropped for whatever piece of trash she finds. And, it's a No to muzzle from me. She's too good a girl so I feel she would just not take to that well, she's sensitive to being scolded, but mostly no because that would leave her utterly defenseless if she was ever attacked- by other roaming/ off leash dogs, also we have regular coyotes & also roaming packs of coy-dogs around here.
@@pawsandclaws12 Yes, thank you for the suggestion. I do work on 'Drop it' & she knows it already as when *in the mood* she will in fact drop, but mostly just looks in my eyes with glee as she basically says, yeah NOPE. lol but I'll try your example and see how that goes. Thanks for the suggestion

Another thought would be to set up controlled situations with some planted trash which has something on it which the dog doesn’t like (pepper or hot chilli, something not dangerous but unpleasant) in a controlled environment, then on short walking routes, until the dog gets the association of trash and a negative taste. I feel like I'd just trip over my dog doing that 😂😂 Both Ivy and I are pretty clutzy.

If your walking the dog on heal and it sees another animal and wants to bolt after it how do you get it’s attention back on you ?
I do that all the time and never works for my dog.
I'm always scared I accidently step on my puppy's paw!!

@thebandplaydon have you tried giving her something to carry on walks that she can occupy herself with or muzzle training?
Maybe you can teach your dog drop it. I taught mine by putting him on a leash (so he can't run away and make me chase him), encouraging him to bite a toy, and then get him to drop the toy by putting a treat near his mouth (or you can offer a toy he likes more if he is toy motivated) and when he gets it start introducing the drop it command.
