Thanks for sharing this. I'm working on a 2003 Dodge Dakota right now in Buffalo, NY. I keep getting rust in my eyes, but hopefully I'll be able to yank the Transfer Case before I'm done tonight. Again, thanks!
I followed your video to replace the Dakota transfer case. The drive shafts came out quick and easy. The transfer case separated easily from the transmission. Dropping the transfer case took hours and your video does not show you doing it. There is a heavily welded frame cross-member under the rear of the transfer case which makes it difficult to push the transfer case forward and rotate. The repair manual sais the cross-member can be removed to help drop the transfer case. The member is heavily welded to both sides of the frame so it does not come out. It would have been nice to see how you actually maneuvered and dropped the transfer case...still I'm glad for your video, thanks.
I do regret that we didn't get to show that. We needed both of us to maneuver the transfer case around the cross member and I didn't have a third person to film. In case others may read this, we did it by rotating the transfer case horizontally so that the rear drive shaft casing was facing the passenger side of the vehicle. Then tilted it a touch as we lowered it. It also really helped having it bungee strapped to the jack so that it was held somewhat in place as we manipulated it, yet the bungees stretched to allow us to still move it.
Hi y'all, thanks for the video. I had a quick question. I found it that my transfer case on my 2002 dodge Durango cracked. The tranny seems to work fine, but my question would be. If the transfer case cracked does that also mean I should worry about the tranny? Thanks y'all!
same thing happened to me, the case cracked in half all the way around..... total junk and the stupid cv joint on the front driveshaft caused the whole mess. fucking skidpans and lame welded crossmember.... this is such bullshit
I have a 95 Dodge Dakota 4x4 and when pulling my 12' boat trailer up a sandy boat launch the front end makes a loud clank noise when under heavy load. (any ideas?)
I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota 3.9l Am having the same problem that you had . Got the drive shafts off , got all the bolts out, but can't get it separated from trans.I have two studs that i think are corroded the top one (used a crows foot on the top one and the one on side next to the catalytic converter) and the other corroded one is the one next to the converter.I beat on it hung on it beat wedges into it ,but can not get it to separate. Any suggestions Thanks Mike
are you positive you got all the bolts, if I remember correctly there is one near the top that is difficult to get to. I do remember having a hard time separating it, I think we had to that area with a plumbers torch and sort of twist it until we could get a brass chisel in there to wedge it out
+mreinsmith Got them all out I did get the one at the top that is the one I got loose with the crow"s foot. I saw on line that some one used a come along. They wrapped a strap around transfer case and hooked the come along to the rear end differential, and while they were tightening up the the come along they tapped with a hammer on the transfer case where it was stuck
What were the symptoms of a bad transfer case ? My 94 dodge Dakota won't go into reverse while in neutral with engine off or on .. 4x4 is Not engaging at all -- it's stuck What do you think ?
My GUESS is it's not the transfer case, but possibly something in the shifting interlock mechanism. Do you have to step on the brake to start the engine or shift out of park in a 94?
I've watched nearly all your dakota videos. i have a question. I have the same 3.9L V6 in my 2000 dakota. there's 2 misfires being reported to the computer. I've replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Any other ideas?
ok thanks, and one last question. Durango VS dakota. What are the similarities to it? obviously its a Truck vs a SUV, but i mean underneath the vehicle. are the parts similar? engine sizes have to be similiar to match the other vehicle? or nah?
They had mostly the same options as the Dakota. However, I believe the is uses front struts instead of torsion bars and I think there might be a few different transmissions that they used. Be sure by grabbing a manual for your year.
Same thing. Its difficult, that m fker is heavy and luck they have air tools and help. I did it with a transmission jack and ratchet straps., and balls.

So how’d did this go? How long did you keep the Dakota for after?
Thanks for including nothing about replacing the transfer case in your video titled replacing the transfer case.
Did you have to remove the transmission mount to get to the bottom bolts?

that does sound like a great idea
use a hand grenade
There's one at the very top that's a bitch to get. Good to have good tools if not you may have to shave a socket
Nice job on the transfer case.
Appreciate it, Thanks for commenting

Maybe blown head gasket. Could be a lot of things. Has nothing to do with a rotor tho lmao.

Donde puedo conseguir una caja de transferencia para una dodge dakota 4x4 manual 1998 en California?
Onl I ne.
would taking out the transfer case in this 2002 dakota be the same thing for my 2002 durango?
According to the manual it should be

ok thank you.
this helped me a lot.
How different is it to do this on an 05 durango

How in the world did you do this without having to drop the exhaust to get your hands in there
It's been a while, but if you have the V8 the down pipes are probably bigger. this being the V6 there is enough clearance
Is there a gasket between the t case and transmission?
