I got this game on ebay in 2007, for about $25. I was an absolute Dragon Ball freak at the time and consumed as much media as i could lmao. Anyway, SDBZ is fantastic. I have to admit that the game didn't fully captivate me as a kid, but that's because I was a Budokai/Soul Calibur 2/Tenkaichi baby. I re-played it recently and had an absolute blast. I had a VERY similar experience haha. I remember still playing it quite a bit but tenkaichi/arena fighters were much more my speed back then. So glad I gave it a second chance as an adult!
This game was hard as hell to find in my area. I remember my friend and I going on the walk of Life to get it. The walk was fun, but GameStop said they didn't have it at first (even though it said they did on the website) until they started checking , so that was a huge relief. Overall, I loved the game. It was different. The customization stuff was really fun; I enjoyed the gameplay since I was gassed out with Budokai at that time, and we got Z sword Gohan and Chichi. I need to go back to this one again. I actually still have it.
Dang, if I remember correctly it was advertised right up at the front of my local FYE at the time lol The customization is def one of my favorite aspects. So unique. And a breath of fresh air compared to the same ol same ol budokai formula at the time. So happy to find out the community appreciates this one

I only vaguely remember renting this one once, but I thought it was a pretty fun game, albeit really hard to play. I loved the manga colors and roster though. Also fun fact: Super DBZ was designed by the creator of Street Fighter 2. Super duper cool game, and great video!
I've seen a lot of videos in recent years talking about this game, but I never saw it at the stores where I would buy games from, I did see many of the bad DBZ games though like SAGAS and stuff, so I have no idea why I never saw Super Dragon Ball Z anywhere, and my neighbor who was a die hard fan of DBZ never got it either, so I imagine that the game was just not brought over to my country, and since I no longer live at my childhood home I can't even tell that 1 neighbor about it, which is a shame because that guy loved traditional fighting games, and would dominate in the arcades when the hype around Street Fighter and the Marvel vs Capcom series was blown up.
Dang man, I’m sorry to hear that! Not sure what country you’re from, but I don’t think(?) it was received phenomenally in America, so maybe mediocre ratings led to early cease in production. Regardless, underrated gem of a fighter
@@mysteriousthirteen I live in Puerto Rico and because this is an island, everything gets imported and there are pretty high taxes and stuff, which is why it makes sense if it wasn't popular, that they wouldn't have brought it in, and even with online shopping there are a lot of rules and legislations, on what items are allowed to be shipped here, which is why its a pain to get some stuff here. Now I wish that there was a collection like the TMNT or Street Fighter ones, that had a ton of obscure DBZ games for modern systems.
@@gpbear4 If I still had contact with that 1 neighbor of mine then I'd hit you up, because that guy was super competitive and was all about PVP, but I on the other hand am different, where even when there was the hype of MMOs and everyone had an MMO or 2 to play, I was always soloing content, and always trying to enjoy the games I played at my own pace, I don't really enjoy multiplayer unless its like local coop and I see the person next to me, I just have too many bad experiences with strangers, that were always pushing me to clear content faster and to try and "keep up" with them, which is why I wasn't a fan of guilds or clans, and I never truly enjoyed games with random PVP, as whenever I would get kill camped in an area of an MMO where PVP was always active, it just unmotivated me to play, and when I tried ranking in games like Marvel vs Capcom and a few others, just because I was a little good with the first matchups, they would then pair me up with people that were "pros" and would totally outclass me, and that wasn't a really fun experience for me, as I just like to enjoy games on my own terms, and if I have to dedicate my all just to one game and not be allowed to play other stuff just to get "good", then that wouldn't be a very fun experience for me.
Ok years ago I found this game at a corner store with Naruto Shippuden ultimate ninja 4 at a corner store and I asked my mom to buy both games for me then ended up having fun with them they where 15 bucks each
Raging blast 1 is the best dragonball game to me ever the what if’s and the so many many stories it was worth the money and the time for sure and it’s one more game that has baby and all the forms every character even lord slug I forgot the name but that game as well🔥
I have another DBZ game you should try, its called Dragon Ball Z 2 Super Battle made by Banpresto. It is a arcade only game and at it time, was way a head of the game compared to other games at time with stage transition and auto-combos for beginners. The game also have some cool ass supers that are original to the game itself. I found the game by complete accident one day when downloading a mame emulator in 2009 and it was packed with the emulator.
This game is cool, but if you want the actual father of FighterZ, you need to check out the first game that ArcSys made, Extreme Butoden. It even has crossplay with a One Piece fighting game also made by ArcSys. Also, there were like 20+ games before Budokai even existed, and almost 100 DBZ games in total. To say that most of the games are like Budokai when only like 10 of them are is a bit misinformed.
For sure man! I actually haven’t played Extreme Butoden, so that one is my bad - putting it on the list of games I need to check out asap. And for the latter half of the comment I meant games in America/western releases. I know there was a ton of Super Famicom releases and stuff prior. Sorry if I didn’t clarify
@mysteriousthirteen It's all good, I wasn't sure if you didn't know or were just talking about one's in English. Also, in case you were wanting to try playing against someone in the One Piece game you might have to use the Japanese version for it since the One Piece game didn't come out in English, I'm not sure.
The best Dragon Ball fighting game is Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3, and Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World, is which basically Budokai 3.3. or 3.5. It's the best anime fighting game of all time.
@@mysteriousthirteen it was the same case for budokai 1. The reason is because pal is exclusive to uk, Australia, and other non English countries. The developers probably would of gone over budget getting the voice cast for each language so an easy fix would be just using jap voices for pal. Ntsc u/c games (usa/canada) never bothered with foreign languages
It’s funny he stated why they never switched up the formula to begin with cause when they did you thought it was trash. Not to mention besides a classic fighter like well fightrrz there isn’t really much you can do to switch up a fighting game. That won’t make it similar or just trash I mean budokai 2 had a different take on how to play the story but no one liked it’s well as a variety of different fighting mechanics like weird fusions. Besides the fighting mechanics there isn’t a great amount you can do to switch up a fighting game well at least in terms of gameplay but maybe that’s just me.
@@mysteriousthirteen yeah lol but this is the first video of yours I watched so it could just be first impressions but you for sure earned a sub off the content🔥
I dont get the initial point. The Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi games were very different with the Tenkaichi games being the only games that feel like true DBZ game. There is no fighter that i can think of with 6 Axis movement which blew my mind as a kid who primarily played fighters growing up Now alot of the games after that tend to favor either Budokai or Tenkaichi but most DB games were vastly different from each other. This sentiment baffles my brain
Well not that they weren’t different, I love them both for their takes on the DBZ story. I just mean aside from some GBA games, in America/western world, most games were just playing through the story using a variation of moves from the anime, but being generally easy to pull off. I admit some combos in Budokai were difficult but, hopefully you get my point. This game was a shock to the system and was vastly different than anything prior or after for the following almost decade
This isn't the father of FighterZ. Extreme Budoten is. Arc system works developed that as well and even some of the animations carry over from it to FighterZ. This was game was solid though. It's like the only DBZ game that Teen Chi Chi is playable lol

I'm disappointed that they have Kid Buu in the game... they needed a sporadic, unpredictable, and animalistic fighter to complete the archetypes of their roster and my boi is just that...
FighterZ is my favourite dragon ball game of all time. I'm interested to see someone not feeling it. I like opposing opinions, do you mind sharing why it's not up your alley? No shade, I'm just genuinely curious. 😊
@TheRandomGuyTheFarNoGameCat the stick gameplay just didn't catch on with me. I loved the art style a lot, it was a beautiful game. I just couldn't seem to really pull of the moves I was trying to do.
This isnt the father of DBFZ, extreme boutoden for 3ds is specially since the team who made DBFZ worked on it, before that its all the boutoden games that came out prior to extreme boutoden including this one.
FighterZ is garbage compared to bt 2 or 3, there’s so many characters, sagas not to mention the game modes, literally compared to games now those were complete games hands down way better than the new dragon ball games….

I was fan of this as a kid I had EVERY ps2 & 3 DBZ game from budakai to sagas
Same here, those were some good times
Loved this game still have my save data on my ps2 memory card for this game, budokai 1-3 and infinite world, all the tankaichis, everything unlocked. One of em has like 100+ characters.
Same here man! Love that
@@mysteriousthirteen did you ever play DBZ sagas? Got that on there too lol it’s like a RPG walk around style or whatever but if you a real fan you have a Ki blast 💥 or ultimate battle 22 loved them all
I got this game on ebay in 2007, for about $25.
The street fighter style is unmatched and timeless, plus the stage selection, character selection, new frieza, trunks sword redesign, and especially the *soundtrack* are all fantastic. A must-play for any DBZ fan.
Dang, if I remember correctly it was advertised right up at the front of my local FYE at the time lol
The customization is def one of my favorite aspects. So unique. And a breath of fresh air compared to the same ol same ol budokai formula at the time. So happy to find out the community appreciates this one
Dude you need to get into voice acting
The way you speak is so nostalgic for some reason lmao
Always considered it! Appreciate that
I wanted to try this SO much as a kid, but I had the GameCube.
Thankfully scooped it up years later as an adult.
Was it worth the wait? Lol
You can found dragon balls with any character. The non created ones are just hidden behind destroyable stuff. Like hills, mountains & other breakable stuff. I only wish their was more unlockable fighters. But the skill tree was bloody awesome 👍🏾
Skill tree was probably one of my favorite parts of the game! Aside from the Manga aesthetic, which was so unique to me. I actually had no idea you could find dragon balls in the stages!
@@mysteriousthirteen the way you did it was way faster. I just wasn't good enough to beat the game with my custom characters at first 😅 you had better skills then me. I found out about the hidden dragon balls by mistake. I got knocked though something 🤣 oh was like.. oh a dragon ball. Having to dodge the enemy attacks just to destroy random stuff around the stage; I did it the nonsense way. After I level up my people... I just started using the custom characters. I'm shocked people remember this game. Must people never talk about it
This is definitely the most Unique, Authentic and Underrated DBZ game that was ever create it, it's a hidden gem DBZ game that a lot of DBZ fans missed out from the old but gold Era of PS2 DBZ games. 🤷🏻♂️✌️
Genuinely agree. So underrated and ahead of it’s time
The sheer depth of the fighting system in thia game makes fighterz look like a beat em up ive seen pro players do shit I didnt even know you could do
I definitely need to watch more gameplay
are you interested in learning? i can help you get started
Not gone lie I used to hate this game as a kid but I bought it again recently and now I love it
Same here man. Never even gave it a chance
I loved this game for the simple fact my older brother never had it… so he couldn’t beat me
I've rented this game so many times when a kid I should've just bought it
Absolutely worth the purchase, I’ll be replaying it for a long time
Super dragonballz was difficult 😂 it used to frustrate tf outta me but I loved the colorful cel shaded graphics . It’s beautiful
Very difficult bro 😂 the vid doesn’t do justice on the training I went through
Hell yea I been trying to get my hands on a new copy online while it’s still cheap. Its value has been slowly increasing in the short time I’ve been looking.
Good video! :D Haven't seen anybody cover this game in depth before!
Glad you enjoyed!
Good memories with this game with me and only a handful of people. A former Capcom producer behind Street Fighter II had a hand in Super DBZ.
Possibly the best fighting game no one played let alone the best Dragonball figher. At least it's my favorite Dragonball fighter...
I had no idea a former Capcom producer played a part in this. Makes a lot of sense though. Dragon ball works great with this style
@@mysteriousthirteenDragon Ball has had about 3 major fighting game companies do there games. Arika who did this game along with Fighting EX Layer and Street Fighter EX, ArcSys for FighterZ, Extreme Butoden, and Supersonic Warriors along with the usual Guilty Gear/BlazBlue games, and Dimps who worked on Budokai/currently on Xenoverse+ more and did Rumble Fish and Street Fighter 4

Very cool! I didn't know that factoid with Dimps and Rumblefish and Street Fighter IV.
I haven’t played this game in years
Same, it was so nostalgic
Man, i wish Bandai could let Arika to do another attempt on this formula of "more traditional fighter".

played it with some cousins back then. it was fun.
I as a big dragon ball z fan I had no clue about this game till about a year ago when I saw enderfights play it. I did a couple vs matches but need to play this more. Also incase you didn’t know the ppl that did fighters made very similar game on 3ds called extreme budokai or something like that. I forgot all about it till I saw thing I saved on my shelf for it lol.
I definitely need to try Extreme Butoden! I looked up some gameplay and it looks very intriguing lol. Glad you gave this classic a shot though man!

Super DBZ is goated
For real
This is one of the few DB games I haven't tried. Your video makes me interested. Will you be covering Infinite World?
Yep I have that coming soon!
Stellar exploration on this game, I always liked Super DBZ for the rare inclusions of 23rd Tournament Chichi and Kaioshin-gi Gohan. Might there be an Infinite World vid coming? :)
They really do have some unique characters/styles. makes it well worth going back to!
Infinite world is a few vids down the line but it’s coming soon!
@@mysteriousthirteen Awesome! I subscribed earlier definitely looking forward.
@@mattb6369 I appreciate that!!
I only vaguely remember renting this one once, but I thought it was a pretty fun game, albeit really hard to play. I loved the manga colors and roster though. Also fun fact: Super DBZ was designed by the creator of Street Fighter 2. Super duper cool game, and great video!
Thank you so much! I really loved this game so much more than I expected. Honestly was going to make a vid trashing it originally lol
@@Chrisezoi know some people around the caribbean who are interested in SDBZ if you want to play online
Super DBZ was actually my fave . had an insane Krillin
Nicee! Online tournaments would’ve been so sick

Been a long time since I played RB1 bro! Gotta put that on the list to replay ASAP
I like this game. The art style is very good and ages well.
The art style is so unique - honestly I don’t understand how it isn’t talked about more often
Sadly i wasn't exposed to this game til years later. But if i had played it then i would have loved it because of its combo system.
The depth of the combat system is remarkable. I was just a sucker for cutscenes and transformations way back then
Good thing I bought this game before the before, the price starts Skyrock on this game because TH-camrs are finally noticing it to be a good game
Dope man! I’m not following any trends though. Just reviewing every DBZ game, and this one happened to be better than I expected lol
Bet! I’ll look into it bro. Thanks for the recommendation 🫡
I always wanted to play this game but never got to 😢
If you can find a way to play it I absolutely recommend!

Oh wow. I never knew it existed, and I love all things dragon ball 😂. Thank you.
My pleasure lol
It was Hyper Dimension, Extreme Butouden then Fighterz. og's know
You definitely gonna blow up I can see it
Thank you bro!
Infinite world is one of the next few on my list to review. Can’t wait!
I think the Butoden Series was the real one who inspired Fighterz.
1993: Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden
1993: Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden 2
1994: Dragon Ball Z: Bu Yuu Retsuden
1994: Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden 3
1995: Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22
1995: Dragon Ball Z: Shin Butōden
1996: Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension
1997: Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout
2011: Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butōden
2015: Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butōden
You just gave me like 6 new games to add to my list lol
Easily my favorite Dragonball game
I definitely slept on this when it first came out. Some of the most fun I’ve had all year

It’s definitely worth it!
I would play this game if it let me fight against the cpu in vs mode. Hate when somw fighting games do that but still wanna play it again one day.
I was also mad I couldn’t fight the cpu in versus lol. I’ll have to coerce one of my friends to fight me
I love this Dragon Ball Z game!
Looking fresh dude
Thanks bro!
Not even close, it would have to be Super Sonic Warriors 2 or Butoden...SSw2 even had teams of 3 with team hypercombos and assists
Been a while since I played those! Maybe I’ll have a different opinion once I do

@@gpbear4 how did you fucking find me ??
What hurt this game for me was (in Australia) this game is exclusively in Japanese.
Which is odd, to me, because the primary language there in ENG, and there’s an eng version.. but there must be reasons
Besides the fighting mechanics there isn’t a great amount you can do to switch up a fighting game well at least in terms of gameplay but maybe that’s just me.
budokai and infintieworld or burst limit are like same game but better then fighterz tbh.
super dragonball does resemble fighters tho
I wish I can play it
Why can’t you?
Emulation.
Always your best option
Is this on Fightcade?
Not sure!
no, but you can use a fork of PCSX2 with built in netplay. works with a good chunk of PS2 games
Extreme Butouden is the father of FighterZ tho
Let’s go
Super dbz isnt too bad, i rented it a loooong time ago. Just gotta keep in mind, its an arcade game.
Yeah agreed. If you go into with those expectations especially, you’ll have a great time
Has anyone ever told you that you look like Caitlin Clark's brother?
No, I had to look that up lol. The athlete?
@@mysteriousthirteen yeah lol but this is the first video of yours I watched so it could just be first impressions but you for sure earned a sub off the content🔥
I dont get the initial point. The Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi games were very different with the Tenkaichi games being the only games that feel like true DBZ game. There is no fighter that i can think of with 6 Axis movement which blew my mind as a kid who primarily played fighters growing up
Now alot of the games after that tend to favor either Budokai or Tenkaichi but most DB games were vastly different from each other.
Got the voice and editing down just clean up those cuts every 5 seconds and you’ll hit the next level 💀
Getting better every day 😂
My favorite game
it’s goated for sure
This isn't the father of FighterZ. Extreme Budoten is. Arc system works developed that as well and even some of the animations carry over from it to FighterZ. This was game was solid though. It's like the only DBZ game that Teen Chi Chi is playable lol
Ah man, I’ve been hearing that a lot! It’s one of the only db games I never played- Definitely going to have to play it sooner or later. And yeah, teen chi chi as a character is wild, DKP although in other games is pretty rare too
Hello XenoVerse 1 & 2
I'm disappointed that they have Kid Buu in the game... they needed a sporadic, unpredictable, and animalistic fighter to complete the archetypes of their roster and my boi is just that...
Despite that, I loved this game even though I'm hopelessly as shit at it as I am at FighterZ. I wish it got a sequel.
Kid buu would’ve been INSANE in this game. Easily my go to.
But yeah. A sequel would be great. Modern day online for this game would be amazing
I had this game as a kid and I did not like it. I'm not really a fan of Fightz either so I guess it makes sense.
It’s definitely not for everyone. I’m actually surprised so many others enjoyed it as much as I did
FighterZ is my favourite dragon ball game of all time.
