How to Fix LED Turn Signal Problems on a Motorcycle - Suzuki Intruder VS1400 rebuild part 12

  • Installing LED Turn signals on your motorcycle is a fantastic upgrade, but it can cause problems. The most common LED turn signal problem that you will face is that all of the LED turn signals turn on at the same time. This can easily be fixed by installing a DIODE Splitter for your wiring loom.
You can purchase a METRIC diode kit or you can fix the problem by making your own.
In this video, I will illustrate how easy it is to fix the LED turn signal problem by building a diode splitter using scrap wire and a couple of diodes. I then will show you how to install the diode splitter into the headlight housing of a Suzuki Intruder VS1400.

Did this for my 85 shadow, worked fine. As he says, plug the DIODE single side up to one of the cluster signals wires and the other wire from the cluster to a ground. Then connet the 2 DIODE ends to the signal wires. The running lights can go directly on to the signals.

Can’t thank you enough! Got a Honda Rebel 250, watches a few Honda videos and I was not very clear I mean they did a good job of wire color and such but you showed me very clearly where to cut the wires and where they came from and going to. That gave me the confidence to take on my bobber with les signals and a new relay I ordered, and as a newbie I’m so happy and thankful! I finally got good signal!

Found my fix. You don't need to use a diodes or resistors to do the conversion. All you need is a CF15 LED non-polarity flasher. It is a three prong flasher, while most Flashers for vintage bikes are two prong. The third prong goes to ground. The CF12, CF13, and CF14 will still have problems. You have to get a CF15. I got one off Amazon for $11 and my 83 Suzuki GR650 was up and running using cheap Amber 1156 LEDs I got off Amazon in a four pack for $10. Total conversion cost was $21. I also converted my instrument panel for $8 for a pack of ten 194 LED bulbs. Then added an LED headlight. I got and LED rear/break 1157 years ago when they first came out, back when they were expensive. It's still kind of dim, as it also doubles as a license plate light, so you have to use a white one in a red on top, white underneath cover. I've been searching for a dual LED (Red Beam/White on bottom) for it, but haven't found one.

I've watched a dozen videos and finally this one makes sense. With the other videos, I always seemed to have one extra wire left unconnected. I have two wires coming off my dash indicator. One of those, I connect to single diode wire. The other end of diode kit (two wires) go into the leads that used to connect to both dash indicators. The remaining wire, coming off the dash indicator, I connect to ground. Working on a 77 triumph, the stock signals have only single wire. Somehow, they are supposed to ground from a plastic housing. It has not been so reliable. Wanted to buy two wire led turn signals, so I can actually attach actual ground wire. Think I can scavenge enough bullet connectors from old harness to make this work. The front indicators go into headlamp shell with spade connectors. Again, only single wire, have to make up ground connectors for all four indicators, but those will be going to circle connectors to mount to frame.

There is a simpler solition to this. Assuming that there is one shared indicator light for left and right signals you can replace the standard bulb with a led bulb (which is essentially a diode as well). Now you only have to rewire the ground wires of your front signal lights to the positive lead of your indicator light and lead the negative from the indicator light to a ground lead. Often you can do this by just switching the connectors, without cutting or splicing into wires.

Im having the same issue on a 2013 softail slim HD. Im hoping this works the same, because you're the only one i found that clearly explained why id have one dim led. Just curious if putting a diode on the individual led wiring would work instead of in the headlight housing. Thanks for taking the time to share such valuable knowledge. God knows what the Harley dealer would bend me over for. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the video. It would be super helpful if you could explain what these wires do (the ones that you cut in order to splice the Y-cord with diodes). Where does each wire come from and where is it going. Not all bikes have the same connector inside the headlight can. This way your fix could be applied to other bikes besides your Intruder. Thank you!

I dId this on my 1995 vs1400 shortly after i got it three years ago. I bought the little kit with the diode set already assembled, and soldered it in. I wish i had thought to use connectors like that, would have been much easier. Of course, while i put in a Radiantz LED tail light retrofit, i still haven't switched to LED turn signals yet.

Good evening I did the exact set up you have on my 86 suzuki intruder 750 i get the turn signal indicator in the cluster to light up but not blink nor does the blinker on the left side when clicked to the left. When I turn the switch to the right a what seems to be a flasher relay buzzes really loud and the light in the cluster and the blinker will not light up. Any suggestions my bike looks like light blue and black are the same as your bike.

Some people may find it is easier to leave the long leads on the diodes and solder to those. Then clip the excess off after done soldering.
This way you are sure not to snip too short and make a mess.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You are not wrong :) Only reason I do it this way is that those stems are VERY brittle and if they are bent back and forth just a few times they will snap off.

I have a 1983 Suzuki GR650 Tempter and tried to convert the bulbs to LED. For the turn signals, I installed an LED flasher, but the bulbs are woanky. I had to leave the front turn signal bulbs as incandescent to make it work. The Tempter has independent indicators for the turn signals, left and right. If I switch the indicators back to incandescent, it does not effect the outcome. I have a feeling that the indicators are pulling power from the switch directly and are not in the turn signal loop. Will a diode (one for each side) on the front turn signals fix the problem?

so, what if I changed the speedo lights to leds, no incandescent on the bike installed an led flasher relay, lights look ok, but have energy spilling over.. turn signals have brake lights, running and turn. I have voltage in the brake wire of the led if the running is receiving and opposite turn signal of the one that is energized. is that my wiring or is that a circuit board problem with the lights?

Hey boss I'm having an issue I've completed a diode circuit as you showed in your video im working with a 86 suziki vs750 intruder light blue wire and black wire. My bike comes with a flasher relay already. When I turn the signal light on the left the signal light does not blank but the cluster turn light lights up but does not blink. When I click it to the right the flasher relay makes a loud buzzing noise and does not show the cluster light at all any ideas?

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

They all come with flasher relays, but you need an LED specific relay

I tried this on my Honda rebel 250 I watched this video over and over to make sure I did it right and did not work for me. My signals do absolutely nothing now and I already have an LED relay. I have check the fuses and that is not the problem. Not sure what else to do

Hi, sorry if i missed something, but does this exact process works only for the front indicators? What about the rear ones? Thanks

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

As long as you have a bike with a single, incandescent indicator bulb then this should work for all 4 flashers.

When I bought my 94 intruder the previous owner had replaced very small led indicators and they work well but the front display on the bike where there is an oil pressure light etc. The indicator light does not flash when indicators are on, even though the burner is intact. And if i give power to
the light directly from the battery it will start flicker. Is there any solution to such a problem?

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Sounds like you need a new relay my friend.

So I made and installed my diode splitter as per you awesome tutorial (thankyou very much) now all indicators a working as they should but Im have a weird intermittent problem with the speedo. Sometimes the indicator bulb will flash as it's supposed to, and other times it wont flash at all (indicators still all work correctly just the dash light playing up) Also Im getting the speedo illumination bulb seems to fade in and out... really weird. I couldn't find any 1N4001 diodes and could only find 1N4004 (1A 400V) Do you think the extra voltage could be issue or have I buggered something up elsewhere? Any help or insight you could give me Hagar would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any idea if process will work on any motorcycle? Have vintage 85 Goldwing Limited.

    •  หลายเดือนก่อน

I essence and theory...YES. providing your motorcycle only jas a single flashing light on your tacho/speedometer. BUT, you will need to find the correct wires for your bike, they will likely be different to mine. Be safe and find the workshop manual and the wiring diagram to check before cutting.

Behind the headlight of my 2007 1400, the large blue connector doesn't have that light green and blue wires.. but there are two smaller connectors with them. I'm guessing one is for blinker and other is for all for Flash. I've hit a road block

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

Providing the bandit only has one incandescent indicator bulb in the dash to indicate whether left or right blinkers are on then yes. If however that bike as a seperate left and a seperate right bulb on the dashboard, then no.

  • @NomadCF
    @NomadCF 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Odds are this happening on a bike with a single turn signal indicator. This leads to the electrical "bleed". This can be fixed without adding additional wiring. As you can replace the single indicator bulb. It's a nonpolar LED "bulb". This moves the diodes from the outside wearing into this indicator bulb. The simpler than ever to install additional wiring.
I did this on 2003 Suzuki intruder 800, etc etc.

Hello Sir, i have question. i have 4 aftermarket turnsignals. 2 for rear has 2 wires but for the front only has 1 wire ( black colour) . i am puzzled. maybe you can help me how to connect ?

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Anna, the single cable wires can often lead to a bit of a messy set up. Typically speaking, the single cable indicators use their physical selves to "ground" to the chassis, but I have often found i would need to add an additional wire and wrap it around the thread of the indicator and then ground the other end of the wire. Personally I would recommend finding the dual wire version and use thebexisting connection points your wiring harness has.

I have purchased led lights for my Aprilia Mx, I have purchased led correct relay, and diode kit. I have followed your instructions up until I need to install my diode cable. I have the wiring diagram but not sure what to look for. Any tips? All my indicators flash wether I select left or right indicators.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You need to find which wires in the loom that go to the incandescent bulb on the instrument cluster/speedo.

why not just change the turn signal relay for about 15 bucks to a new and improved modern led turn signal relay that has the dial on it to control speed of flasher. i hate cutting into wiring usually in the long run I find if you cut into wires at some point it becomes a mess and causes problems. I avoid it at all cost.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Because unless the circuit is grounded at some point this won't fix the problem. The relay will only allow you to control the speed of the flashing, it will not split the circuit into the left and right side for the switch. If all for LED lights turn on and don't flash when flicking the turn signal switch, this is due to the incandescent instrument cluster bulb allowing the flow of electricity from one side of the circuit to the other, hence the diodes to stop this from happening.

  • @stewartgrant9832

Why not just fit an led relay instead of all this messing about?

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Because, as mentioned at the end of the video, a relay only controls the speed of the flashing, it does not control power to each side of the circuit. The original wiring is not designed for LED bulbs which require a different voltage compared to incandescent bulbs and the splitter and diodes stops the additional voltage of the circuit "spilling" over in to the circuit that has not been turned on.
      Hope this helps :)
