    I have had pomelos from Chinese supermarkets that varied widely. Some were very sweet with little bitterness or acidity. My favourite were mildly acid and bitter and not too sweet but very, very juicy. I love peeling the segments, it just seems so wrong to be able to peel a citrus segment.

    "honey pomelo" is the only one they sell here in Canada
    It's large, about 3lbs and cost about $3 Canadian

    In Chinese, 红柚 means red pomelo and refers to both grapefruits and red-fleshed pomelos. No real distinction is made between the two citruses, mostly because pomelo is much more common in China and Chinese diaspora communities. Growing up I thought grapefruits were just smaller, more bitter pomelos - until I learned that they're half pomelo, half orange.

    At our store they’re pretty cheap. The texture and sweetness varies drastically. One time it’s rather hard and “dry” with less flavor (nice texture to chew though), other times it’s very moist, sweet and the little pockets pop easily. Always a surprise but never disappointing.

    • @wendytube007
      @wendytube007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually end up going to higher and Asian grocery stores to buy it (The fancy ones that guarantee their fruit T&T here in Vancouver) often the texture and sweetness is more consistent. Personally I like it on the dryer side with a slight sweet tartness. There’s nothing more disappointing than a dry flavourless pomelo and those unfortunately are far too easy to come across.

    Would you ever consider re-reviewing soursop? I understand you've had... Not so great experiences with them in the past, but I got a couple in an exotic fruit crate recently, and when eaten while actually ripe (the one in your video appeared over-ripe to the point of being almost inedible), I found them to be genuinely enjoyable.
    Just a suggestion.

    My guess is they are usually picked younger so they last longer and when you buy the more expensive ones they are more mature fruit and must be shipped quicker and therefore cost more

    • @DevideNull
      @DevideNull 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Younger trees, because they are still growing, do not have as much nutrients to supply to the fruit, resulting the thick skin and less meat.
      Older trees, they are already stabilized, will have more meat and more flavorful fruit.
      But it usually takes more than 10 years, which is why it is more expensive.

    Botanically speaking, a pomelo, and an orange or lemon, &c., is a berry, just like grapes, watermelons, pumpkins and bananas.

    Re the hint of berry flavor, the red colors in some citrus are due to anthocyanins, the same family of red/purple pigments that appear in berries and pomegranates.
    Anthocyanins do contribute to flavor, but they're usually present at such small amounts that many peopke may not be able to pick them out due to insensitivity or lack of flavor discrimination skill. Your long practice breaking down flavor notes for us shows well on this one.

    My parents have a gigantic pomelo tree in their backyard, and it always makes too many of these damn things every year.
    *you know how embarrassing it was having your parents make you bring a bag of pomelos to school once a year and try to give them away for them?*

    • @Whydoyoureadme
      @Whydoyoureadme 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally get you. I have often brought my parents shit and leftovers to school (not food usually, but I did bring zucchini once) because they thought it would be appreciated, but it always ended up left behind on the playground or just thrown out. In retrospect it wasnt so embarrasing, but it felt that way back then.

    I've watched a bunch of your videos and have heard you talk about Pomelo many times, but I have just realized that this is a fruit that I loved back in Taiwan. For the longest time I've confused my childhood fruit with the Japanese Yuzu because the Chinese name for Pomelo (Youzi) is the exact same as the Kanji for Yuzu. Apparently there was some mix up with the names of the two fruits. When I saw the Pomelo in previous videos it was cut and had huge rind, which is different than the ones I've had (thin rind like in this video and pulled open by hand). Thanks for clearing that up for me.
