absolutely just showing us how brutal and dirty it is on the ground,its fucking amazing they really outdid themselves this time.
+Andrew McCaughey I disagree, Helms Deep was brutal but this was beyond that, this showed the true horrors of close quarter combat, bodies piling up, men being trampled, buried alive, crying out in pain, no honor, no heroics,no remorse, just men killing other men.

I don't think I've ever seen a battle scene on the level of detail as this one. This has to be somekind of milestone for film in general.

It's not a better scene because it's based on an actual war, I'll remind you most of GOT is based on the war of the roses.

If you are a big company and you get exposed you're fucked. If you are a small company and you abuse animals your company will get shutdown before it even starts.

The best filmed battle i have ever seen. The feeling of opression, chaos, fear, madness that this chapter delivers is something unseen. Those close shots that put you inside the batle were sick. One of the best chapters in GOT. Kudos to the director.

In all seriousness though, who knows. Maybe budget constraints? He's been pretty sparse the whole season, with the exception of course of the first two episodes.
I believe Jon left him at Castle Black to make sure people think twice about usurping Edd.
They spent all the budget on the dragons and battle scene so didn't have enough for Ghost
Probably back at camp. Why would Ghost be in the fight? A dire wolf would get killed instantly by all of those arrows. A battle of that size is no place for Ghost.

Technically they didn't own Winterfell in season 3....It was a ruin then the Boltons restored it.
Which the Boltons destroyed in the first place. It wasn't the ragtag crew of the Greyjoys with Theon that burned down Winterfell.

Seeing D&D is almost like seeing an ex you had a horrible breakup with. That weird feeling of thinking, "I used to love the shit out of this person and now the very sight of them makes me want to rip their skin off."
If a TV show (OK HBO, you're not TV, we get it) can pull off this, then movies are dead. This is the future.
it's already happening. a lot big Hollywood films can't make this. they're stick doing pg 13 to get lowest common denominators and make profits. Thrones is known for R rated violence with fantastic storylines. Far more than can be done in a single film
this is the golden age of television. Cinematic expertise comes from things like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones now, instead of the diluted movie industry
But honestly, who the fuck will cry for the film industry? They made their beds, and they made them poorly. Only thing that saddens me, is that people still pay for the dreck and drivel that is superhero movies. It's completely absurd that all of Hollywood has been overtaken by a single genre of films, dictated by two or three different companies, and that people for almost 10 years have swallowed that bullshit raw.
While I agree Hollywood consists of more superhero stuff than may be necessary--I personally LOVE it. However, I would really love to see a lot more good drama come out of Hollywood. Thankfully, TV is taking care of it for the most part, though.
***** When you consider the fact these superhero "movies" are in fact large budget TV series projected in theaters, it makes all the more obvious that stand alone 2-hour films are a dying art. It's neither good or bad. It just is.

I've never seen such a terrifying and realistic battle not in a film and not in a series either. This episode just flashed me and showed me how brilliant GoT can be.

Iwan Rheon (the guy who played Ramsay) is such a fine actor, his mere presence in any scene was enough to create a sense of fear and tension. Hope he finds good work after this show.
Yup I'll be paying attention to his career. I've heard that the actors that play the most vile characters are usually very good people and are capable of reaching the opposite side of the good/bad character spectrum. I bet he'll do fine in a good moral person role

He plays Simon Bellamy in misfits amazingly well (a socially awkward anti-hero). Highly recommend it.

Jon Snow was a magnificent beast in this episode, haha! I loved how they showed him fighting tooth and nail alongside his men while Ramsay just watched from afar like a coward.
Not like a coward. He is nothing but a coward - remember how he fought when Theon's sister tried to save her brother?
The leader has to manage the battle - not to run around with a sword. What happens when there is no leader left?
Especially if this leader is the only noble from his bloodline (not in this case). Once he's killed, all battles are for nothing. That how it happened in Middle Ages. Soldiers just go home - no reason to fight.
Ramsay was way, way smarter as a military leader. Just karma wasn't great.

Yeah, fighting tooth and nail among your men is not the task of a commander. Caesar, Napoleon, Hannibal they weren't good because they fought next to their men, in fact, they didn't. They were good because of command.
Although in desperate times they were needed on the front lines for morale or to prevent routing.

Some Roman consuls fought alongside their men because it was fun or something, the moment they died, because they put themselves in mortal danger, the head of the snake was cut off and the army crumbled due to lack of leadership.
Generally it was far better to be in a safe position and command than fighting at the front line and dying.

The battle felt so real, had to think about what people in real life must feel standing in such a battlefield. During the World Wars or now in Syria, for example. Really brought tears to my eyes.
But I still feel sad for the horses.
i know what you're saying, but the WWs and Syria are different types of war. what was shown is what warfare was like in the dark to middle ages, including the crusades.
SVanTha You're right, wars are different from the ones in middle age. But to think about the fact that there were hundreds of those wars in middle age. And still wars today with thousandsof people die ... it's awesome to watch those fights in TV. In real lie not so much fun.

And this scene where Jon and his army gets surrounded is very much based on Antiquity. A mix between classical Greek Hoplites, Macedonian Phalangites and Roman Legionaries.
Benjamin Shultz they carried big shields in WWI did they? and the arms/armor in the show harkens to the medieval period, not the classical.
SVanTha "Different types of war". And no, in the medieval ages no one used big scutum shields as depicted in that battle, the closest thing would be pavise shields used and planted by Italian crossbow men as cover.

I love Jon and Sansa’s unspoken interaction when he gives her Ramsey Bolton’s kill. A sort of apology for not thinking she could be a leader in battle and also a sort of fulfillment for everything Ramsey did to her

Much more authentic than most movie battles. I liked how this battle portrayed a disciplined, trained, and well led army destroying an armed mob. The shield wall was like a Greek phalanx. Only the arrival of friendly cavalry at the last moment saved the day for Jon Snow so I wonder why Ramsey, (don't get me wrong, he was evil, brutish and sadistic but a competent battle commander) didn't have scouts afield to reconnoiter.

Because he killed his own cavalry to form the wall of corpses and wounded, suffocating men, which he used to trap Jon’s forces.
It seems Jon finally did the impossible, he defeated the legendary Ser Twenty of House Goodmen, an incredible feat.
Well Jon did use a Mormont shield against Ramsay's arrows in the end. That means that at least one of those 62 men made it all the way through the battle and into Winterfell. I guess their reputation holds true.
Uhm... and what about Lyanna Mormont? D:

this entire battle scene was actually deeply disturbing. and that is exactly why this show is so amazing. they could have gone with the lord of the rings fantacy battle where everything is clean and grand but what thus battle managed was to create a sence of relism that depics war in a very relistic light. war is hell and seeing bodies piled up and this sence of clostrifobia is what real hisoric battles report and its spectacula to see
actually it was one of the few battles they actually showed tactics and techniques of war.

Nah Hardhome is still the best episode so far in the series. From a production stand-point I think it was brilliant, but the story of it was a little flat for me. I liked it better then Blackwater though, that's for sure

it's a battle between two armies. how much story can there be? you want complex politics and relationships? you don't force a storyline where it doesn't make sense. this arc in the north was only about battles and armies and killing. a simple "story" makes most sense.
Hardhome also didn't have much of a story. Jon negotiates with wildling elders. some of the wildlings accept, some not. too late, undead party is here. massacre. nothing complex, but a godly episode because it delivered on what it was meant to: action and death.
chuhrros It was the way the soldiers of the Vale showing up at the end of the battle that just fell flat for me. It was so telegraphed that it sucked out some of the tension for me.

But it's still unbelievable how well these horses are trained! Respect!
Can I ask you to be more precisely? I have no idea how they do those stunts with the horses, and i really really hope the animals are not harmed...
No I really don't think that they're harmed :D It's a long way and it takes many many years to make them fearless like that and learn them those stunts..
time and patience are the most important things when you're working with horses, no matter if it's dressage, jumping, eventing or doing stunts/training them for being a film horse :)

I think the hardest thing is stripping horses of their absurd fear of everything new. I know myself, I grew up with horses. all it takes is a towel on the fence that had never been there before or a car in the middle of a forest where it never was even though they walk around cars on the daily basis, for horses to start freaking out and trying to get as far away from the new object that is not supposed to be there as possible :D horses are funny creatures :D

Sansa's remarks to Ramsay about his name, his house, his memory disappearing is significant. It reminded me of the Ancient Greeks where the only immortality lies in remembrance, of songs being sung about you or tales of heroism passed down... She is basically saying, not only will you no longer be, but that you no longer were.
Beautifully said and I absolutely agree. I liked that part much better than the torturing/killing scene that followed. It just didn't feel right to punish Ramsay with the exact same cruelty he used on others. Erasing him and everything he stood for from history is the much more powerful signal!

This battle scene was simply amazing. Honestly, I can't remember if I've ever seen anything like this where I actually have a sense of direction and scale instead of it just being a blur. And in order to pull something like this off it requires A LOT of CGI, costumes, horses, props, extras - and money. Damn

Nah he would never go into a war with them. We have seen in the show he actually has affection for Sansa. If he was to do anything, it would be something more sinister and cunning like marrying Sansa to become the warden of the north.

the actors who played Ramsey and Joffrey are truly incredible. The way they brought those characters to life, made us absolutely hate and fear them, but their performances and charisma somehow still made us want to watch them. 2 of the best portrayals of villains in tv history.
It's so nice to watch this and remember that the show was so awesome at one point in time... so sad about the final season :(

Sansa needed to make it seem like the Stark forces were outnumbered. If Ramsey had seen that they had the Vale army then he would have holed up in Winterfell for a siege that the Starks weren't prepared for.

Lord of the rings, the return of the king still has, the best battle in a movie.
In TV, yes is the best, but it doesn't come close to the Minas Tirith/Pelennor Fields battle... yet overal I think it's second on the list or at the very least 3rd.

on a serious side note though......wow, I am seriously stunned by how well they pulled this off....like this is downright the best episode, and most definitely THE best stunt/action sequence in our current time. A genuine set, genuine horses, and somehow making a cav charge look like one without people or horses actually getting hurt is an amazing feat. Well done to the GoT teams, well done indeed.
and yes, I know there was some CGI, you can't completely simulate a medieval pitched battle without it actually being a genuine battle.
Waterloo, while not medieval, was bloody well filmed with a cast of thousands. That was awesome. And that was done before the era of CGI.

I was referring to current era battles, where the majority are just mythological beings fighting each other with some pretty background battles (COUGH COUGH GODS OF EGYPT COUGH COUGH FUCKING TERRIBLE), this goes back to what was great about the pre-CGI era movies, like Braveheart and even the Patriot.
