Worms, Germany - home of my Oma & Opa, where I used to come visit

  • Worms is one of the oldest and most historic of Germany cities, but more than that, it was also the home of my beloved grandparents (meine Oma and Opa), whom I visited there as a child.
This was my first trip back in over 55 years; they have passed on and I began my visit by going to their beautiful gravesite @ Hauptfriedhof Worms aka Friedhof Hochheimer Hohe which you can read about more here:
    www.findagrave....
We then did several walkabouts, which included Ludwigsplatz where there is a statue/oblelisk to Ludwig V and then the nearby memorial to Martin Luther, a major leader in the Protestant Reformation. The memorial is the largest Martin Luther Memorial in the world & you can read more about it here:

Last, but not least, we visited the ancient Niebelungen Bridge - it happened to be closed for repairs, so we were not able to walk underneath it through the archway of the giant tower. Of course, all of Worms is mentioned in the famous Nibelung Legend, involving Siegried and Brunhilde. There are whimsical dragon statues all over the city to remind everyone of the legend and also includes a statue of Hagen throwing the jewels into the Rhein (Rhine River) - it is down by the beautiful promenade along the river.
Since I was only around 8 at the time, a lot of the sights are only vague memories to me, but the emotions came back of spending time with my beloved grandparents.

Nice video! I am also a son of Worms, now in the USA. I am fortunate to visit every couple of years to renew memories from so long ago. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for sharing this video. I too lived in Worms when I was a child back from 1958-1960 when I was 6-8 years old. My father was an American soldier stationed at a base somewhere around Worms. I remember This beautiful city very well and the Tower going over the bridge.

Thanks so much for your comments. Small world isn't it? We actually lived in the Stuttgart area at the time, first in Scharnhausen (now known as Ostfildern) and then my favorite, Ludwigsburg (I have videos up of those two places as well). We moved to the U.S. in 1957, my dad was also an American soldier, my mother German. I didn't really start speaking English until we moved to the states. It was very emotional for me to re-visit, since I knew both of my grandparents back then but unable to attend the funeral for either one at the time they passed on.
