Only addition I would add: Take a large, flat file and file the lip on the main threaded opening on the tank flat and true so the rubber gasket seals completely. Often, the lip is not flat, has some flashing, or the opening itself isn't even round (sometimes more oval shaped). If you don't do this, some will still leak even with the rubber gasket.
I haven't drilled a gas can, but I have used a spade bit on plastics a number of times and found the spade drill bits work extremely well. The ones with the little points on the outside edge, when you drill sheet plastic it works just like a cookie cutter.
Thanks for this video. Using the step-drill is an awesome idea. I need a fix for the two cans that I have because they are basically UNUSABLE. They are so miserable for me to pour, and I spill gas everywhere. So far the fix for me is to siphon the gas out of the can and into my chain saw, lawn mower and boat fuel tank.
Goofy regulations. I just use authentic NATO Jerry cans. No vapor leaks and the spout is a full flow spout. Don't worry about fire like with the plastic cans. I like the ARB dual can holders for fastening two tanks and locking them in place while in the vehicle. A friend of mine uses these spouts now that I told him about them so he no longer waits to refuel.
"Just in case someone does something stupid"! Love it... As far as drills, if you have a battery driven brushless drill, there should be no sparks to cause any hazard.
When I was a teenager in the 60s, I used a simple, metal gas can to fill that Briggs and Stratton. Unscrew the lid to pour, replace the lid after use. To my knowledge, I was never killed by a horrible gaseous fireball while refilling.
I wonder how many visitors to Canada bring back a few normal cans. Along with conversion kits, I can easily see people using alternative containers such as for kerosene cans to get around this. Likely jugs from laundry soap etc. being used for gas too.
The nozzle design is driven both by safety, and by the EPA, to reduce gasoline vapors esceping into the air. Sadly, the designs have become so complicated trying to meet all the requirements, that more vapor may be escaping than before. Part of the problem is that people are lazy and sloppy, and just leave the caps off all the time, thus the spring loaded nozzle on this can, which prevents most vapor escaping when unattended.
I hate the spring spouts!!! Maybe turn the can upside down when drilling the hole to help prevent shavings from entering? The added smaller hole extension looks like it may make the nozzle too long. Note: My friends (neighbors) don't need to be drunk to pour gas onto an open flame/fire. Thanks.
That small spot is for the reduced diameter blocking device in a lead free fuel filling port. It will only except a narrow spout. It prevents putting diesel in there too. Without that small spout it would take hours to pour five gallons into a fuel tank without spilling it everywhere.
I am glad to know I am not the only one who HATES these new gas cans! Whoever made all of these "safety" latches or catches obviously does not use one of these.
I'm pretty sure you're absolutely correct. The safety nonsense is on there because federal legislation requires it. I'm thinking the number of senators and congressmen who mow their own lawn is roughly zero.
I wish we could get a TH-cam video interview with an actual engineer who has worked to develop these insane inventions. Those insights would be amazing, I'm sure.
Thank you. Great audio, BTW. It's great when a TH-cam poster does not rely on the camera mic for audio. Fortunately, I still have two of the old style gas cans that came with built-in vents. I'll be ordering this from your link. The old spouts have worn out.
Great video! I tried to fill my car with gas and the new spout nearly put me in a padded cell. Im hoping this new larger spout that you show will enable me to top off my car if needed.
It's still more damn complicated than it needs to be. We're dealing with a high a highly flammable liquid and we have to fk around with these cheap plastic leaky parts to try and make a spout.
Just ordered this adapter set for my scepter new cans. They're horrible. Have to remove the screen inside too Hope the threaded caps they came with work, because the design on my scepter is that so I can't reuse the threaded cap. You can't get the scepter one off the spout they have
*I used this on my 2006 Troy Bilt Pony (MTD) tractor **Bestfor.Garden** also recommend it was an easy swap. It's very light aluminum and seems sturdy enough so far; I assume you really only need to replace the idle pulleys once so if these wear out anytime while I have the mower I'll update the reivew.*
I made the vent holes but the spout has a fixed screen in it so could not get the plastic pieces out but there is that screen and a screen in the screw on spout so thinking that will protect or keep the pieces out
you need to look closely at your car spout, there are 2 locking tabs inside your fuel hose that need to separate. check your owners manual. there should be a properly sized funnel somewhere in your car that is the same size as the unleaded fuel nozzle at the gas station that pushes those tabs to the side to allow the nozzle to go in. look closely and you will see it.
I have a can without a vent hole in it. It does work, but it will pour a lot slower. You would have to tip the can up several times to allow air into the can so it continues to flow well.
EZ Pour makes a much better spout than these flimsy noodle spouts. They make a rigid spout with a slight angle on it which makes it much easier to start it into the tank. I had one of those noodle spouts spring out of a gas tank and spray gas in my face. I threw it away and bought the rigid spout. It works like the old yellow spouts that used to be on gas cans.
back to the original problem if trying to pot into a car all cars have a smaller hole to put gas in so your big one will not work without the smaller addapter hence back to slow process and holding the can for a long time to empty
This is true.. On my 92 ford ranger I use a 1/2 inch copper plumbing pipe and it is a perfect fit. Any bigger and it will not go in the tank. The 3/4 inch hose that some people use would need to get reduced down to the 1/2 inch at the tank so can not fill any faster than the 1/2 inch pipe.
I can never understand why most nozzles would not have a bend of at least 45* down. Unless you are pouring gas into a big hole you need it to start flowing downward not straight out where is then can easily flow partly right over the fuel tank opening.
@@ArnoldsDesign You're no fool, that's obvious from your videos. I was just commenting on the nanny government that thinks a flame arrestor is necessary.
Are you able to store the spout inside, like the older style spouts? They used to come with a cap to block off the large hole in the can, when the spout was stored inside.
@@ArnoldsDesign I see, thank-you. Maybe I could just make my own from similar plastic. Oh wait, I have an old gas can I don't mind cutting up. I could cut a round disk out of that to use as a block off. That way is the same type of plastic and won't deteriorate from the fuel too quickly.
I wish Easy Pour would stop the dumb little gasket and make just a flat rubber gasket with a hole in it I made mine and they don't come off every time you un-screw the spout.
I'm confused about what rules are being broken... Here (in Canada) you can buy vented or non vented gas cans, and standard spouts or spring loaded spouts...
Big brother saving the earth and us from ourselves, along with overzealous trial lawyers. You can read more here: ezpourspout.com/epic-failure-government-gas-can/
Still wondering. If I have the choice to buy both types of gas cans, why would I buy the non vented can and convert it, when I can just buy a vented can. This gas can problem must be in the USA...
We can't even import two stroke dirt bikes anymore, and they try to make it impossible to adjust the carburetor on your chainsaw without proprietary spline tools. It is US borne political and legal b.s., pure and simple, brought to us by sue happy injury lawyers and enviro freaks. I don't know if the cans are actually illegal, but they're hard to find. Vented cans can't be found in brick and mortar stores anymore, at least not any I have seen, so you have to go online to buy them, and they cost a lot more. I think a lot of people just assume the vented cans are no longer made, so they give up and pick up the junk cans they sell at walmart, costco, or wherever.
@ Duchesne's Corner ..... Evidently you have a choice in Canada. We DO NOT have a choice here in the USA. Our ""brilliant"" government has once again ""fixed"" a problem that did not exist. These new spouts are from the pits of hell.
I know right? But you wouldn't believe the amount of comments from my first spout video about sparks from the drill causing gaseous explosions resulting in countless casulties, and if anyone followed my unsafe and irresponsible practice, then the world would descend into chaos, resulting in famine, pestilence, locusts, etc, thus the inclusion of the sparking caveat in my second spout video was decided.
The stupid vent leaks gas as it splashes back and forth. If can falls over it will leak gas out. I came back from town with my can in the back of my jeep. It leaked.
This is what happens when you let Bookkeepers design products in stead of mechanics. As a cabinetmaker designer, you should see what they did to kitchen design. Ask Lowes or Home Depot. They are losing a lot of business over this.
I like this guy, video is kinda long , but he's thorough and very clear so Darwin's Law of Natural Selection doesn't select out the Morons. Did I just say that?.....................................Yes I Did
To dirll the hole, I filled the can with water. Probably a little overly cautious, but I was concerned with creating a spark with the bit on the plastic, or from the drill itself as being an ignition source. Then you need to get the water out of it and dry it completely of course.
Why don’t you evacuate the shavings out of the gas can by using your shop vac by putting the hose on the vacuum side to suck the chips out. This would add a couple of minutes to the video.
So after watching both vids, I still have not seen you show us how to safely use it and not spill diesel and gas all over the floor... lol, only an idiot would assume that he knows how to use a fast flowing jug...
I don't know. I sorta just assumed peeps would have enough brains to know how to pour liquid from a container with a spout it into another container with a hole. I guess I was wrong in your case.
Do what I do: click on the settings button and change the speed to 1.5 or 2x. Helps make the videos shorter especially for those that talk a lot AND talk slow.

Found the same "earlier" version at tractor supply. Works well, spout could be more flexible, but way better and safer than the new "safety " cans.
Great video saving all of us hassles with fumbly design gas and diesel cans. Thanks a lot for making your videos.

That's what the spout manufacturer recommends too. I'm going to do another video showing that.
Leave it to the Government to fix a nonexistent problem!
The best ive found is the battery powered stick pump harbor freight sells. Ive gotten to old to pick the cans up and hold them
I really like the step drill bit idea. Another good, informative video.

If I ran for president I would run on making the “safety spout” illegal
I'll be your VP.
President Trump probably will he is already changing the rules on light bulbs and dishwasher that dont wash!

Being too wordy in vids is something I've struggled with for years. It's very frustrating as a content maker. Glad you found the info helpful though.
forstner bit works great for drill the vent hole.
Don't put the vent hold on a seam to keep it from splitting.
I suppose it's possible, but I've never had that happen.

They need to make that vent a screw cap design, the snap caps get deformed then fail.

i need 4 for my kerosene cans the caps are broke on all 4 and they dont sell replacements they are about 4 years old any help would be great
You can get vent caps a stuff off EBay
Never suck out gas or fumes with a shop vac , the brush motors will blow it up at the correct mixture of gas and air . Ask me ! Use compressed air
and the cap thread is changed too
will theses new replacement kits work on kerosene cans
Yeah

1. cut the goofy spout off
and jam a foot-long hose over the stub
2. figure out some plug

but not on the seam.
