As a guardsman player I felt the relief and salvation when the drop pods were described and the absolute destruction the Lamenters brought with them, for all of 5 minutes, and then the Grim Dark set back in and I realised the great devourer never loses

Love this story and your narration ABP, interesting to see an early iteration of General Grizmund from the Gaunt’s Ghosts series. The Black Library work from this period absolutely defined the 41st Millennium for me growing up.

They could write a whole series of action Escape horrors were they are simply about a character trying to get off a planet under invasion. Withdrawl books are great recently reading the markoo kloos front lines books exemplify how a hard battle a defeat and then a withdraw can make for a awesome book.

One of the "enemies" of WH40k I really am not fond of are Tyranids. So he send me this to listen to, saying how it is amazing and one of his favorite stories (unlike me he likes Tyranids a lot, maybe too much). So here I am finished listening to this excellently narrated story and trying to find a words to say how I utterly hate even though it is really good.
I remember when this story first appeared in White Dwarf, I guess late 1990's early 2000's? One of the best stories Ive ever read from GW. Abnett is one hell of a writer, wish he would do a full novel on a story like this.

The lamenters are the only good faction in 40k so the universe must try to corrupt and destroy them
