I love these! Unfortunately, every year mine gets attacked by pickle worms which is the larva of a moth that lay at night! I'll try covering with an insect net at night. These are also similar to the Melothria pendula which looks like little cucumbers too. Some resources say the melothria p. are toxic others say the are if you eat them when they are ripe and black but can be eaten while crip green and unripe like the cucamelons. I've grown both!

Hope you can grow these well this year. Thanks for the info about Melothira, interesting!

@@thasneen tried them for the first time yesterday, I actually really enjoy these, they will be a yearly addition to my garden, my wife got a tingly sensation after eating some though so either she ate too many or she's allergic.

Thanks for the info. What fertilizer did you use to get the leaves so big? Mine were spindly with tiny leaves 😮

Honestly, I haven’t used any fertilizer this is the only plant that grows like a weed in my veggie patch- touchwood 😊

For indoor plants you should be able to pollinate by hand using a qtip or a paintbrush, you just have to move pollen from the male flower to the female flower. I've never grown cucamelons before but I imagine you can prune them down to the height you prefer. :)

Hi! I hope you can help. My plants flower and I have had lots of females but after awhile I suddenly have none and no melons. It's like they just disappear without making it to full size. Once the flower is gone so are the melons. Is there any way you can tell me what's wrong??? Thank you. Any help is appreciated.

The flowers fall off due to stress related conditions. Potential stressors include too much water, excess nitrogen in fertilizers, dry windy conditions, and temperature extremes. The stress leads to non-viable pollen which prevents pollination and subsequently the bloom dies and falls off. Also, plant a few colourful flowers like marigold, will attract bees 🐝 more bees = better pollination. Hope this helps & may the cucamelon flourish & grow well.

my question is how to get rid of them!?!?!? They showed up in my garden and are growing over EVERYTHING!!! Mine seem to be smaller and SUPER invasive. It is like I have a net of the vine covering my garden. It started last year out of nowhere (maybe a bird dropped a seed?) It came back with a vengeance after the winter here in the Southern US .. help!!!!

Find the root & remove the tubers. If the plants are having cucamelons you should keep ‘em, many dishes can be made with it- stir fry, soups, stews etc.

If the melons fall to the ground they will self seed prolifically 😳

Could be lack of pollination, do you have bees in your garden? Plant colorful flowers that will attract bees. Or you should do hand pollination.

I bought the plant from a garden center- Heeman’s. Unfortunately, this is not available in all garden centres.

Where are you located? I haven’t seen these starts, but I know someone who got them at Home Depot once. I tried growing their seeds but it didn’t work.
