on the company point, i think the thing about being in a company is being surrounded by people who give you useful input relating to the field is the key thing that helps in most cases
in my experience i feel like being in a company on average will give you an abnormally high base CCV, since you get the existing audience that are fans of the company. and you learn what content will help you grow more quickly through feedback and pushing from the others in the environment, be it directly or indirectly.
:D good video as usual on your end. its been fun seeing you find your own path.

thank you for your input Pippa!! I agree and maybe that's why people want to join companies is so they can get that push, hmmm, maybe i should interview someone to talk more about the benefits of being in a company someday.
thank you for the kind words, you have no idea how much they mean to me coming from you!!!

I dont feel like her content has changed much from 3 year ago compared to now. She did learn about marketing, advertising, branding and merchandising. She probably learned more technical skills than any actual entertainment. Skills that the vast majority of Indies dont really know or think about.

I kinda went into VTubing knowing I was facing a very uphill (almost entirely vertical, really 🤣) battle. I'm a dude. Most VTubers are girls. I mainly use my model as a medium to talk to viewers when I make content besides music and singing, and most VTubers ARE their own content. My schedule is... difficult. Having a daughter and a full time job means I'm only live for maybe a tenth of the time most other VTubers can be. It's brutal. 😅😅😅

I can relate to an extent. I’m still a png and my irl job and life in general gets in the way from me having the time to create content when I want to. A lot of times I’ve come to accept that I’m not going to get a consistent following since my schedule is sketchy at best and random at worst. The end of the day I enjoy what I can get done and if anyone does decide to check me out it does put a smile on my face.😊

I think streaming is oversaturated. but not content creation. There are only 24 hours in a day, so if there are millions of stremers and billions of people with a limitited amount of time, there will be a wall at some point. But VIDEOS and pictures do not require people to have consistent availability. I can watch this video any time, pause, and come back AND watch other creators. But with streams, you kind of have to dedicate your day to one stremer either watching the stream or the vod

I disagree. Sure, a lot of anime style models might share a design style at some point with her, if it catches her eye, but there’s still lots of unique art styles and designs that Ironmouse hasn’t done or might never do. Sakurai_Mon, DesyncZX, Nearigami, Pumpkinpotion and Chicken_Ryuta being some of those. Even then the art style of the model doesn’t mean everyone will look like her design-wise either. Ironmouse has stuck with an Angel/Devil theme for years and I can’t see her becoming like Matara Kan. There’s even a Biblically Accurate Anime Girl model and Biblically Accurate Angel model by Shindigs (on youtube and twitter).

I do agree a lot with you, I think people need to understand that vtubing is not THE MEDIA you stream, but rather the MEANS you stream your media. It's just your creativity outlet and a tool, not your whole thing that will carry your whole stream.
I'm not very active on your channel as commenting/chat Mari, but I do feel like you opinion and content make the media a better place, even if not on the same instant that it's posted for every one to find, but something that will always be there to find and that it's not something that gets old. This will always be something that people need to learn, doesn't matter when and there is a lot of videos like this, so thank you for that.

I think most people who wants to become a vtuber immediately thinks that all the vtubers that started in 2020 became super successful out of nowhere just for being a vtuber, when in reality most of them were content creators, twitch streamer for years before that. They had their years of learning and gaining confidence and an audience, that doesn't just come with you unless you are naturally entertaining. I needed months on every job I did until I felt comfortable with what I was doing and learned everything I needed to, even after studying to do that job you still don't become a professional in a day

Another great video! I definitely used to be in the camp of needing to have a better model or needing to play certain games for more viewers. But I guess even if the progress is slow I get the opportunity to try a lot of things and see what works. For instance with TikTok’s and shorts, I always wondered why “story time” ones seemed to garner more attention. Then I made a few and they ended up doing better then a lot of ones that included gameplay. Now it may seem kind of obvious that people want relatable content, but it was definitely an eye opener.

People always want to be that one person who discovered a "copy" and start a whole drama, honestly just ignore them. No matter what you do someone is gonna say that you're copying x-other vtuber. Personally I think it's a bit funny especially when Holo-fans do it. Since the logic is usually something like:
Small and somewhat blue indie must = Gura copy
Small and blue corpo (Kobo) = totally unique not the same
It's just kinda ridiculous at this point

I firmly believe indie VTubers aren't so different from regular TH-camrs from the late 2000s through 2010s.
There used to be so many great channels that did different things, yet were all successful in their craft. Their fanbases usually stayed for the people behind those channels.
From my standpoint, I tend to watch people mainly for the personality. That's the one thing that will never change for me.

I've had similar discussions with a friend of mine who thinks that vtubers are oversaturated while I'm of the opinion that factors such as personal tastes and community engagement means there's no true limit to the number of potential vtubers. And I think the crux of our disagreement is (similar to your point) that he views vtubers themselves as the content and I view vtubing as a style of content creation.
Unrelated, I got whiplash from my dumb pun showing up at 2:06.

I resonate with your emphasis on being someone who attracts the audience you want. Virality and numbers aren't worth it if you wouldn't actually want to spend time with your audience and build a community with them, and being authentic and unique lets you build that unique audience devoid of external competition. I'm also glad you mentioned how your mod still watches vtubers because they genuinely find their content entertaining, not because of their presentation style. Ik you already watch a lot of Film Booth and YT strategy (based on your packaging and outro) but the idea, substance of the video, and your personality matters so much more for actual quality than throwing money at equipment and models ever could. I literally teach middle-aged corporate workers how to be productive and learn as a vtuber which is not always the most associated thing with those qualities 💀

I think this just applies to TH-cam as a whole. Yes there’s a lot of people who game, or do mukbang or makeup, but at the end of the day one of the many ways to grow it to build an audience that’s interested in you as a content creator, an entertainer, and just have fun with it. TH-cam works both ways in my opinion, one your audience has to find something about you or your content entertaining whether it’s gaming or reaction videos and Two, I think you the creator also has to enjoy making the content, and this is just my opinion but I’d absolutely hate wasting time into making content that is trying to fight to get to the top of the algorithm, that sounds like pain and suffering. I’d rather have fun and enjoy creating content for myself and everyone else who wants to enjoy that content. But at the end of the day, it’s still a struggle to even make places as an online entertainer, there’s just a lot you have to balance between making content and your own social life and health, and I’d definitely understand why that can be a lot for many people, hell it can definitely lead to burn out. But I think that’s enough of a rant on my end, great video it was very entertaining, it was a great food for thought type of video.

I'm considering making a live2d model and developing some vtuber content! I think I'm lucky in a way though since I'm really not putting many eggs in that basket. I'll have fun with it and use it to make whatever content I like at the time, but I don't much care if I'm successful with regard to viewer numbers. I'll be making it all for my own enjoyment, and if others like it then woohoo, but if not then it's chill.
I agree that too many people are equating a 'good' model with being enjoyable to watch, when it's really the other way around. Being enjoyable to watch comes from making content that is engaging, and if you make stellar content your model could be an animated dustball and people would still show up and watch.

I think the streaming side of vtubing is what feels the most oversaturated. Kizuna Ai is the route of a vtuber I aspire towards because she did a lot of pre-recorded work as a Virtual TH-camr. Most virtual creators livestream. I can’t name a lot that don’t. So that’s why, to me at least, vtubing comes off as oversaturated at a glance. I personally like watching pre-recorded stuff because livestream times overlap a lot when it comes to streamers I enjoy watching.

Your Mr Beast allegory falls a bit short for me bc of personal reasons for disliking him, but i agree that generally people like you for /you/ and the things you do, not for how fancy your setup and model are. I'm by no means /popular/, but the people who watch my stuff enjoy it. Modded Minecraft and Doom streams might not be the most unique, but I'm also good at talking even if there's no one in chat and get folks watching because of /me/, not because of whatever popular game I'm playing.

I found your channel a long time ago for the vroid vs vtube studio stuff, dont know you're doing based content now. You probably won't read this but here's my two cents: to stand out on youtube, be it vtubers or usual content creators, the most fundamental thing is to "have a purpose", like your purpose is to grow an audience in order to feed yourself and maybe family, sure, literally every human being in every industry is doing that, what else? Pray on the chance that random audiences will like your voice/model/personality if you're lucky? or actually try your best to make something that attracts audiences "on purpose"? Ludwig and his fans already proved youtube is a skill game not a luck game, I really don't understand why most vtubers don't show off their skills more often.

My struggles have less to do with it feeling "oversaturated" and more with my very nature swim against the current, making me more suited to anl smaller underserved audience but too drowned out to be found by that audience.
Not only do i have the inherent lower visibility of being a male indie, but I'm more on the chill side and All Ages by just being my genuine self (I don't even swear in my daily life) and not participating in BFE or flirtatious behavior. I also don't have any prior connections to any big vtubers and I don't really associate with any who participate in the afforementioned BFE/GFE, are flirtatious, or heavily use profanity. Which happens to be most big vtubers.
So, whatever audience there may be that suits me, they dont even know I exist because I don't know how to make myself seen without agency backing.
Not that there are many agencies that hire male talents with a masculine voics who want to use a male avatar, and probably even fewer that do AND don't have problems behind the scenes.
And because i haven't grown enough for me content creation to be monetizable, I'm hard-limited in how much time I can or into it because I need to make a living at my day job plus a fiance and family I won't neglect.
So, I can't realistically put much more time into my content until I grow, but it probab I y won't grow unless I were to neglect those other aspects of my life to bust my butt inproving in creating content that doesn't yet pay. Especially not when I'll be getting married within a year's time and I'm not going to put her through financial difficulty for this.
Therefore, i mostly just have to accept that I'll probably plateau at my current level unless I either hire an editor and/or manager or give up being a vtuber and maybe try being a voice-only creator to appeal to the larger audience who don't seem to like/respect vtubers.
For the tine being, though, I know I want to start doing discussion content again. I enjoy recording my extensive thoughts on various topics, both gaming related and nore philosophical, into spoken word. And, while im not big enough for it to get big numbers, I've gotten multiple comments of appreciation for such content Ive already done and many people have said they enjoy listening to me talk.
So maybe I can move in a more commentary-oriented direction, just less focused in drama and more on what we can learn from the underlying concepts and principles that create said drama.
Though, I feel like i may have to hire an editor to take care of my daily Shorts uploads and make my recordings more engaging. Because I dont have as much time to edit as I used to.

Vtubers feel oversaturated because it is both relatively new and quite popular. If you're into Vtubers, especially if you'rea newer fan like me who only really got into them late last year, then first you're going to be deliberately looking at Vtuber content, then the algorithms of TH-cam, Twitch etc will recommend them to you, and they come to be very prominent in your personal sphere.
A little bit of basic human psychology comes into play, name the phenomenon of confirmation bias. Confirmation bias leads us to start with an assumption of what we think is true ("Vtubers are everywhere now!") and then interpet what we see as confirming that assumption to be true ("I get recommended so many Vtuber channels, that proves they're oversaturated!") because our brains prefer to identify simple, clear patterns even if the conclusion is not entirely accurate, over putting more effort in to finding out the full context to get a more accurate view of the truth, because we're always primarily concerned with our own perception and experience.
Basically? Vtubers seem oversaturated if you're really into Vtubers. Vtubers remain almost entirely unknown to people who aren't into Vtubers, let alone into TH-cam/Twitch content at all. A few years ago when the EN Vtuber boom started I was only peripherally aware of it. Now I see new Vtuber stuff every day. It's become more popular in that time, yes, but what really changed is where *I* am relative to Vtubers, not that Vtubers suddenly became oversaturated.

VTubing in 2024 is a painfully UNDERDEVELOPED content sphere.
90% of streamers are 100th monkey content cloning. Be it the same games, challenges, karaoke, and convention events. Sure, these things make collaboration so easy, but there too, we stumble upon one group being Avengers and the other being Justice League versus Corporations on contractual quota, summarily a situation of same show different channel with differing pay rates.
Only 5% of streamers have actually found their unique niche of content, and it's wild to me that algorithms can't see past the gooner bait? These niche streamers could outcompete free digital television programming if they were given actual air time. Their content is perfected to what they do best, and what they do best gets literally no recognition.
Which leaves me to that other 5%, the black horses of the method, the maverick makers of new content types altogether. Without these streamers the other 95% would have no clue what to do with themselves. It's this 5% of innovators we need to culture into the community going forward into 2025, because the technology and the cyberspace have changed and upgraded considerably.
In my opinion, VTubers should start consolidating their avatar resources as characters for a scripted entertainment show. Make episodes, be comedy or drama, but have an ability to relatably represent a social or humanities theme through plot narrative. Everybody has personal lore, now do _meaningful_ character development. Be a good story, but not just yours, be ours.
For inspiration, look at the amazing editing work of clippers and how they stepped-up their quality in 2024, adding special effects and pertinent focus thus facilitating viewer immersion and platform originality of content. They're practically an untapped production studio? Even if every episode was a five minute 2D sketch, they'll polish it to gold if we give them something _meaningful_ to produce.

    NITPICK WARNING
I'm about two minutes into the video and something you said caught me a bit off guard. You said something to the effect of "If three vtubers make the exact same content, only one of them will succeed." I absolutely agree with the idea that if there are three competitors are doing the same thing, then only one of them will do well. However, this doesn't really feel like the situation. I think Mattpat put it best when he said that TH-cam isn't about competing, he said that instead it was about working together. I do believe that three creators making the same content can all succeed at once if they work together, but that's IF they work together. If they don't and if they try to tear each other down, not just two of them will be unsuccessful--all three will fail. An example of where this happened would be the TH-cam beauty scene, which had been a flourishing genre for over a decade. At the height of its popularity, many of the larger creators tried tearing each other apart and the viewers got sick of it. Now, the scene is a shadow of its former glory.
I've seen plenty of situations where, when creators create positive discourse or even just occupy similar spaces, communities grow faster than they otherwise should've and it drives people to many of the similar videos. I'm going to use mattpat as an example again (prob a bit repetitive given my comments on some of your other recent videos lmao). Mattpat's video on Sonic's real speed got a large part of its popularity because one of the VSauce channels covered a similar topic at around the same time. Both videos saw large parts of the other channel's audience viewing it. Mattpat later said that he believed at the time that VSauce's interference in his sphere would've made it impossible to compete, but he said that now he believes that VSauce's presence fueled the success of his video. Thus, I think I can safely say that if three creators create similar content, it can be massively helpful for all three as long as they don't aggress on each other.
Anyway, that's just my two cents. Thanks for coming to my ted talk
Edit: I watched through the rest of the video and I agree with pretty much everything else.

Mari I'm a 3d vtuber on twitch, but I don't give a flying F about what people think about my content. I'm currently on a health break till I go live again. but my content is variety. but I'm also not a humanoid vtuber. I'm a furry vtuber. what is your opinion on furry vtubers? I'm also one who doesn't give a flying F about getting a sponsor or agent or a company. I stream for fun. I find it is easier as a furry vtuber to not be compared to others. I was streaming before vtubing even became a thing, but it was back then when it was necessary to have a cam to stream. I took a 9-year hiatus and I'm just getting back into it. i was a streamer on beam/mixer after giving up on twitch for a bit, I have since gone back to twitch.

I think you were starting to make the point, but moved on. It ain't the model, it ain't the trendy flavor of the month game/twitch meta, it's the persona you put to it. It's no different than doing facecam, voice over, or the PNGtuber. Yeah, you have advantages the others don't; being able to visibly emote like facecam, but still keeping your real face concealed, for example. It doesn't mean anything if your doing the same dry "yeah...", "weird...", "so crazy..." and the 3D model asset may as well be a sticker.
I think part of it is VTubing is starting to get big enough and the barrier of entry is low enough that we're getting a gold rush of creators trying it. Eventually, it'll settle down and just be a thing some creators do. Some will hit their stride, others won't. There is no winning formula, but there is always one that's good enough for _an_ audience.

To me the model is good for getting viewers and really showing off your persona/what you're about, but it won't really help you keep the viewers once they're there.
A good model may make me click on your video, but if I don't like the content, I won't watch. I don't remember who said it now, but I saw someone say that "while a good model won't get you any actual viewers, a bad model could scare them away" and I think that's a pretty good way of putting it

Wait, companies can OWN color palettes and hex codes? Wtf?
That's like saying I own a tree because I bought a stack of looseleaf from Staples one time.

    • @HyattHyatt3179
      @HyattHyatt3179 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

So companies can own hex codes and colours, not sure if they can own colour palettes/combinations though. The way it works isn't that you can't use that one colour as a private person or for your vtubing model or for idk a note book cover. It's really only so that other companies can't use it for their brands.
So it's less of a "we own this pay if you want it" and more of a "we own this to block our competitors from using it"
You can't get sued for using a certain colour or colour combination for your own projects, and they can't stop anyone from having shirts in their patented colour either

Honestly, there'd be a lot less burnout and a lot less graduations if these "content creators" actually created content. Ultimately, most of these vtubers just throw on an anime avatar and stream videogames because it's the easiest option that requires the least work. Just throw on whatever streamer bait game is popular at the time. Hololive and nijisanji, kinda ruined vtubers because everyone tries to copy them to make it big. Vtubing is 10 years old and still in its infancy. There is SO much that can be done that so little of them will ever do or attempt to do simply because it's more effort than hitting the start stream button.

    • @HyattHyatt3179
      @HyattHyatt3179 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't necessarily think that's true, sure some people do copy the big corpos, but then don't make it big in the long run. They show up in people's recommended and they get a boost from that, but if their content/persona doesn't hold up, then their viewers are going to leave, and like you said if they force themselves to do what's big and easy they will burn out and that's not exactly good for keeping viewers either.
It's also not uncommon for vtubers who try to make it big by doing what's popular loose their viewers when they revert to the content they actually wanted to do from the start. So I think people who blindly follow the big corpo's content models are only making it worse for themselves in the long run.

Waste money on a lewd model
Inject lewd topics into everything, even when it’s supposed to be innocent
    Go “uwu” every five seconds

My biggest issue personally is my models. I make them using Vroid, and I have a fair few models I'm very happy with, I like the concept, I like the design, but something just isn't there. I keep making a few videos, or start working on my logo and then all interest kinda just disappears and is replaced by a new character concept I'd much rather do. It's happened about 3 times now, even more if I count the amount of models I stopped working on halfway through.
Does anyone know a way to get out of this and find a concept that really feels right without just switching to the next idea before you've gotten anywhere? It's not that I have trouble focusing and I can go back and appreciate my old models (even from just a few months ago) but they're just not really right anymore.
So I was wondering if anyone has any tips for how to find a vtuber concept and identity that really feels right and won't just loose it's charm a few months or weeks later when you get a new idea or new inspiration?
