Never forget - 2004 2K Sports released a superior game, NFL2k5 at a $20 price point, outselling and outperforming EA so badly, that EA never wanted competition again.
Actually the league was more angry about the price point, the league didn't sign off on it and were not happy at a "premium" product being sold at a third of what it should have, which was one of the reasons the license got put up for bidding by the league, as opposed to everyone's favorite untrue story that EA simply bought it out. Sega didn't even put in a bid as they were looking to unload Visual Concepts (which they did to Take 2) since they were bleeding money as a software only company with some expensive flops at the time. 2K5 is the gold standard, but let's stop rewriting history from how unhappy folks are about Madden. I still got all the gaming mags from back then reporting on it if anyone wants to borrow a copy!
@@DSMTheEditor But that's not reality. 2K wanted to make a splash so in 2004 all of their 2K5 games, football, baseball, hockey, and basketball all were sold for $20. I should know, I bought them all and loved them. That was the only year I bought all 4 major sports games. 2K reverted to normal full-price the following year. I've followed this story for 20 years now intimately and I've never once heard what you're suggesting.
But EA won NFL games. 2K won NBA games though. If only they would merge to make the best of both worlds. But that like asking Apple and Samsung to merge and make new phones.
If this doesn't cover EA's decision to resell essentially the same game over and over again at full price versus simply offering updates via DLC, it's not a real doc. Because that's the real story - how EA has been taking advantage of its users for years.
The only thing they’ve changed is some rosters and the year numbers. Next year, they’re going to add a few new players, and then change the 25 to a 26. That’s it.
I said it before and I will say it again. The fact that they are allowed to do that is on the consumer, not the company. It wouldn't even take a full boycott. If 30% of Madden players did not buy that game for one season, EA would have to change the model to one version of the game every few years, and having people pay for roster updates.
Dawg they have to keep it the same so it is realistic to actual football. If rules change in the nfl, they change in madden. It’s not like other games where they can just add new features plus it’s yearly, what do you expect. They’d be stupid not to release it every year, I suppose they could make one game and continuously update it, but yeah!
@lethalsword628 lol even you realized it at the end. Yeah, the reason they do it they way they do is because we keep buying it and it makes them a lot of money. Sure, they COULD make it more affordable or allow for updates via DLC but why do that when they could charge us $60/year for a "new" version. I wish we weren't such gullible fools - the Fortnite and GTA Online folks are probably laughing their asses off at us.
I mean it’s sorta like the iPhone they perfect the phone they way they perfected the game. What else you want to have happen differently in madden? It’s realistic AF compared to 20 years ago 😂
Madden has a monopoly on the NFL license and the game has entirely collapsed compared to early years. NFL2K5 still has far superior physics and gameplay to modern madden. No competition in the market anymore. Get rid of EA NFL!
It's sad to me that most younger people will never know how good Madden used to be. Creating my own team, jerseys, stadium, players, having a radio show host talk about last week's game. They'll likely never make memories like that. They won't know what was lost...
Madden aint the same like how it was in the ps2 and ps3 days. The downfall was madden 13 when they started prioritizing ultimate team over the full game itself. The NFL should just open up the license and allow competition again
Unfortunately as long as that greedy corrupt PofS roger goddell remains in charge of The NFL, ea will remain the only company allowed to make NFL games.
And the Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube and Wii days. Or if you want to be specific, the sixth and seventh generation of consoles. Madden didn’t just come out on PlayStation you know.
If EA is behind this documentary, they wont tell the truth about NFL2k. Their motto should be: “ if you can't beat them, buy the exclusive rights so no on else can make a better game”
Whoever made this documentary understood the assignment if they're including Angry Joe. His annual angry reviews are now synonomous with Madden for me.
“Don’t do anything to screw up my name” Have you played Madden lately? It’s the same thing over and over and over again. 2K made a better game and EA took the license away. Smh.
This is basically EA made madden games, then they just never stopped making madden games, and eventually acquired the NFL license. So everyone was forced to play only madden, and destroyed any competition so the games eventually became lazy annual games that guarantee money. since the casual sportsball gamer will buy every game no matter what.
Bro, they’re probably probably gonna skip over the pay to win kids gambling addiction and just say like yeah we just added it because we need some extra bucks like SHUT UP
I miss the old days when Madden was referred to as the greatest NFL coach and broadcaster of all time and not as the crappiest video game in the world.
I remember loving Madden and buying it every year from 97 to 2014. Too bad the game went downhill when they added ultimate team, but it made them money, so that's what matters to EA. This documentary does a good job of glazing EA. They should take the Madden name off their game. He deserves better.

I don't know why they had to screw everything up from 2012, that was the best one ever made they changed it where you get called offsides if you stand next to the quarterback, back then you could control all the teams and put it in spectate mode
This will be presented as if they simply reigned supreme and that's how they are the only game being made - ignoring that they simply forced exclusive rights - and to show the animation of Mahomes flying sideways in the air and throwing is the obvious marker as to why the game is not good anymore.
I had every single madden and this is not going to be an accurate doc if it makes no mention of the switch from being one of the top games to eliminating ALL the competition to focus solely on the pay to play aspect
It is quite remarkable to publish such a documentary as a success story against the background that EAsports does not develop its games any further due to its sports game monopoly. In my opinion, the success story described has been over since the beginning of the 2010s. Since then, there has been nothing but greed, gambling on children and disinterest in the sports of soccer and American Football.
I am in the middle of episode 2 and it's been really good so far. The nostalgia hurts a bit, about the game but also video games in general when looking at these cassettes and old systems that made my childhood, the nineties, retired legends, John Madden himself....those were great times! It also reminds me that I spent way too much time playing sports games from the early 2000 to 2010ish, missing on a lot of great games from other genres. I would become so obsessive in Fifa, NHL, Madden, updating squads, creating my player, restarting a career over and over again 😆
Laughably bad. They completely mis painted a picture where Madden is good (not surpising considering Amazon is an NFL partner). Just like maddens yearly recycled release, terrible.
Great documentary, was a little bummed that Rob Hubbard didn't get credit. A lot of people don't realize just how important good music is for a successful game. For me a good game is 50/50 playability and sound.
If this doc somehow ends on a positive note then it will miss the mark. Yes the games have sold gang busters and yes it has come a long way since its initial release but, that doesn’t change how stagnant, copy and paste or predatory the franchise has become.
I downloaded the 10 hour trial for Madden 25. Its honestly not worth any more than that. EA is the epitome of what is wrong with the video game industry.
