Hi Pete, A young Irish dairy farmer here. We have a small herd of 30 dairy cows. Unfortunately sentiment has been lost to commercial production over the years on alot of farms around the world but it pulled at my heart strings seeing you guys mourning prudence. We have a 16 year old lady here and she’s still trucking along nicely! They older lady’s may take a little longer on the walk in for milking each morning and evening but it is my privilege to wait, not everything is about money on this farm. I’m sorry for you loss.
As someone who used to milk and breed cows, I have so much respect for you for having a cow that age. You are doing SO MUCH right. I wish people understood the magnitude of this!

Thanks for posting the thoughtful video about the com's passing. It's nice to see that your operation is small enough to allow you to be connected to the livestock. When I was young, my grandparents had a small farm where they raised sheep and a few steers. There were always a few ewes and bucks that had names, but this was never the case for the cattle. My grandparents had no problems consuming beef from the steers. The one time one of their favorite ewes was butchered, none of us could eat the meat. The ewe's meat went to a neighbor instead. The compassion you show for your livestock and the feelings my grandparents showed for the sheep are an indication of what folks are made of. I'm an old man now, but the memories of my youth on the farm are still with me. Thanks again for posting and for the hard work you and Hilary do everyday.

I know Pete is not the kind of person who put things on others. This is why I like Just a few acres and Pete . He is really the only TH-camr who puts out shows and not trying to brag about his new tools or trying to sell you stuff .
In the anti farm climate that we are currently in I truly wish that more people could see this video to help them understand how these things do affect us 💜
@@blessedbyond I don't think so to be honest. I would probably be opposite politically to those claiming this. People like me are in no way anti-farm. We like good, healthy, organic food (I'm not THAT deep into it, food is food, but i don't disagree with those things). You only get that from farms. Small local farms are the best. We don't like corporate mega farms with cruelty issues, and yea less cows would be better for the environment. I love steak though. Would love to figure out how to grow just the meat itself in a lab with none of the downsides and perfect replication of taste and texture, current options aren't there yet. Personally more automation would be sweet. I think the more we can remove hard human labor the happier people will be and the more enjoyable and comfortable their work can be. I enjoy this guy's videos, he seems happy with what he does. Not everyone is happy working that hard and I don't think thats a negative thing. People shouldn't have to work this hard if we can help it, and I think we are at a point in history that we can. That frees people up to enjoy life more rather than work their life away. Maybe people like Pete would keep doing their thing because they enjoy it. Not everyone gets to enjoy the work they have to do to survive. Anyway rambling at this point. Long story short, even though we probably live different lives, I still love and respect farmers (I'm actually going to the farmers market for the first time in a while tomorrow morning just because I saw Pete's videos yesterday, and my dad recently started farming Texas Long Horn cattle)
So sorry for the loss of prudence. Yes we do get attached to our animals but it is part of life as painful as it is. I think the other cows know and pay they’re respects too! Another good video!!!
Pete, it is part of farming, hard as it is. She was well cared for at your farm, so you should be happy for the time she was part of your place. As far as politely asked that people not send you things, you did it very well. It can be overwhelming. Love your videos. Be safe.

I used to be a Hay Dealer years ago. got around to lots of farms all the way from Hancock ma. out to Rochester, seen tons of animals of all kinds lots of Dairy. breeding farms etc. and the way a lot of the farmers handled and treated the animals they had under their care. and you are at the top of my list for one of the Best in animal care Pete. and I'm not just blowing smoke at you. you really care and that shows. I for one after all the "treatments" I've seen over the years know "Care" when I see it. thank you for that and God Speed.ECF
I am sorry for the loss of Prudence. It's never easy to lose an animal. Especially so for a favourite. We have Herefords, most of which were born on the farm at this point, and we keep the vast majority of our girls for their whole lives. We are very lucky in our community that our local excavator, who also digs the graves in our cemetery, will come to the farm at a moment's notice for animal burials. We have a cow cemetery up on a hill at the back of the farm, and it's nice to be able to go back there and "visit" the old girls we got a chance to know and love (even the ones who were jerks). Rest in peace, Prudence.
Sorry for your Loss Pete, I feel bad for Hillary and you. Lost our dog at 10 years old and we had our cat for 22 years, she died of old age. Miss that cat every day ! GOD BLESS !
It's tough to lose a part of the animal family, I know this well. So sorry for your loss. You are a man with a kind heart, Pete. It's easy to tell by your words and actions. I really appreciate your videos.

When a cow dies in a herd the rest of the cattle will stand around them, like you said, kind of a memorial or a funeral, we had one died and dragged it off with a tractor and the cattle were bawling and hollering and following us
I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my cat week. I never thought I would cry over a cat. But he was my buddy and followed me about everywhere for 8 years . If you told me at 63 I would cry over a cat, I would have said you were crazy.

My condolences. Growing up on a farm, as a kid-I got numb to death. My Dad named a heifer Pam. Then he butchered her, because he had to go clear to her don’t know how to say it, but her calf was turned wrong. But she sure did taste good. I think you are the best and most caring farmer I have ever met. You are the best Pete. The very best. I cannot tell you how much I need to see your videos. ❤️
No matter how much you get used to animals coming and going, a longtime member of the herd dying is heart breaking. Like loosing a friend or family member. Take time Pete, Hillary, and family. You essentially lost a loved one. Pay your respects, Prudence earned them. No matter what people say, us farming love our animals, all of them.

Tough when that happens. It's worth a few tears then you move on. I do believe cows know. We had a cow named Valerie that I was very attached to. The cows that stood on either side Molly and Emma went down in milk production for a few days but then they came around to as we all do. I sense even Ezra knows through you to. I know the farm will rally. There's no other place to go than up.
I am sad that Prudence is gone. Over time, I suspect that another will come along. But I do think that cows are special and deserve the very best care. OleDave😢
We're there with you. In the 8 years we've owned a pasture in South Carolina, we've returned one cow, two bulls, and a horse to the land. It's never easy, but it's part of the life.
My great aunt and uncle raised white-faced Herford cattle on their farm near Elberfeld, Ind. The ground was hilly and partially wooded, surrounded by coal mines. They all had names and when one died it liked to kill my aunt Lois. Uncle Don had two International Harvester tractors -- an M and an H (one of the reasons I enjoy watching your tractor repair/rebuilding videos so much). I drove the H when I was little but the M was plagued with a bad radiator. Uncle Don always had trouble finding parts because they were kind of isolated. There were many family farms in the area and everybody knew one another. The women -- and sometimes men -- would help with canning vegetables when the gardens were producing. I remember one time we helped a lady down the road snap and can three bushels of butter beans. Many years later, It dawned upon me that I got to witness the very last chapter of subsistence farming in their region -- before the days that farms became hundreds of acres instead of dozens. When you are young and just living through the experience it did not mean that much to you. With age the experiences grow in value. I have heard that feeding chickens chia seeds increases the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids in the eggs. Have you ever tried that? I remember when I lived in the D.C. area, Frank Purdue used to feed marigold seeds to his chickens and it gave the skin a yellow color. We have nothing like that enormous Farmer's Market like you have there in your area, despite the fact that we are surrounded by hundreds of farms in this Tri-State area. Today, all that was that little 80 acre farm of my relatives is long gone -- a new owner tore down all the buildings and the fence rows. They re-contoured the ground to do away with the stock pond that I caught fish in when I was a child. The woods is still there, however, and there are blackberry briars on the back side that are still there. I have been picking blackberries from those briars for over 50 years. Although I will never be able to own that property, when I walk through the trees I always feel a sense of belonging and familiarity that extends back to the days of my youth when you could breathe the clean country air and late in the day often hear an old two-lunger John Deere tractor plowing a field on an adjacent farm.
Pete, I think I can say I feel your loss. I would think it to be similar to when a pet like a cat or dog passes away. It is the loss of a family member. You showed there is a healthy way to grieve and to honor who has passed. Thank you Pete and Hillary, you have an honest wholesome way of living and philosophy. I enjoy you sharing it with me.

My grandfather always said"better outside than inside the home " The cows on milking would follow each other and wait for the door to open. Some cows were 18 years old and each would find their space. When the older cows died he always buried each and the cows always would smell the cow on the trailer and then stand looking on. He always missed talking to each cow who passed. My grandfather milked until he was 91years old. He was like the cows slow and steady with a little hand scratching and talk(.....). He would say, "to say goodbye and look to the younger one." They are family to the end.
Your authenticity, humility and empathy are on full display today. I must find ways to emulate them in my life. I have made some poor decisions that have caused major consequences in my life and my childrens lives. Right now I’m struggling to find a way through each day. Pete, coming from a farming background, my heart aches for you and your wife.. As you said, life and death are just part of living on a farm. It does not soften the blow, other than to know you are not alone in this life, and when you think about it, there are a lot more Good days, good memories, than bad ones. We live in the good memories. I feel for those that live in the cold cities, without noticing the singing of a bird, the sound of wind in the trees, the grunt of a pig or the mooing of a cow. My favorite sound is the sad song of a loon. But that is me. I really love a barn cat crawling in my lap, with a soft meow, and falling asleep. Remember to smile.
Sorry about Prudence. Animals are like family. On a farm note, it’s great that you have that market. I really wish we had something like that. (I make handcrafted chocolates and I look for ways to market my products locally.) 😃

Dammit Pete, you made me cry. So sorry for your loss. We have an elderly cow here on my Parents farm that is the very last of our original line from 40 years ago. She was never around a bull so we had no calves from her to carry on the line...going to miss old red cow when she is gone.
Peter and Hillary I am so sorry for your loss of Prudence. Three Winters back I lost my lead ewe of my flock, for no apparent reason, 2 days before Christmas. She was 10 years old. She was such a sweet soul. You truly don't know how much you have bonded with them until they're gone. May peace be with you
I feel for you, Pete. I just lost my first cow. Had her since 2003. Took her in as a bottle calf. She was our most reliable producer and a matriarch of the herd. Always lead cow. Loved her brisket scratches and the top of her tail rubbed. Her name was Kathy. Anywho, concerning your feed issues, maybe a little higher protein feed will get you there. Try whole cotton seed and flaked corn. Cotton seed is pretty cheap right now down here in Texas, but that may not be the case up your way. You’re probably right about genetics being a factor. Dexter do just as well on grass alone, and it’s possible that no matter what you do nothing will increase their average daily gain. We run Herefords and angus. They blow up on the cottonseed/corn combo.

Pete, I've enjoyed all your videos for a while now, first time I've left a comment. Like all your videos, your calming voice explaining things around the farm. How you talk to all your animals, and even though they don't talk, they respond in their own way. We can all see the connection of respect. Even when it's time to prepare an animal for consumption, your approach towards the animal is with utmost respect and thankfulness. I'm a city boy, but I've always been fond of horses, cattle, pigs etc. I would love to be a ranch hand, or help someone like you. The closest I've come to that is when was a kid I always loved going to the Stock Show and Rodeo. Just seeing the animals up close and their size, is a different feel in person. Also the smell of livestock is like no other, in a good way. This video of losing Prudence was emotional for me as well, like she was part of my family. When I saw the Title of the video, I'm like Oh No What Happen. To watch you and Hillary mourn her loss, and explaining how you first met Prudence coming up to you, and your emotions were evident and sincere. Back in the day I've seen videos of ranchers being abusive to animals and would try to run away from being hit or shocked, stressing the animal out. Your story is fascinating, from Corporate to the farm. I've learned so much from your knowledge and storytelling. Lastly, I lost my wife 5 years ago, and I'm so envious of you and Hillary. She's such a sweetheart. You sir are living the Dream my friend. Well Done, and Ill be watching...

Sorry about the unexpected loss. Losing an anchor animal prematurely hurts. I never thought about the plastic use on baleage but I remember your idealism previous video and there's plastic albeit less with net wrap around the round bales if you purchase. (which makes me like the twine baler you have). Lastly, I'm holding out for your farm Bootcamp (paid) where we could come up for a day or so to personally grow from you. Learning to contribute and not follow ;)

I grew up on a small farm like yours. We had 10 cows and hundreds of pigs. My favorite cow died from oak leaf poisoning when I around 12 years old. I remember staying by her and crying that day. You learn a lot about life and death growing up on a farm. I feel for you guys.

We lost our prized ewe during labor last Spring and I can totally relate. I’m very sorry 😞 when I first bought the farm, I lost a yearling steer and a lamb down into an old well in a freak accident
So sad,sorry! Lester from Ima Survivor Sanctuary lost an animal to a groundswell too a few months ago. They just didn't know it was so unsafe and they were heartbroken.

Sorry about Prudence. We all know how well you care for and care about your animals. She was one of my favorites to see you interact with. I actually watched a video of a farmer that makes hay tea for his cattle. I don’t remember what he said the benefits were.
I've only just started watching your, videos from here in the UK and absolutely Love them. For more than thirty years we had a microholding in our long narrow mid town garden with its perfect little stable yard in an 'L' at the bottom. During that time we raised pigs, two Jersey cows from calves, sheep (lambed over 100 lambs over that time), milking goat, ducks, quail, chickens, oh and horses. Like a jigsaw keeping everyone happy in or out on rented pasture but it worked and your videos bring back happy - and sad - memories. When Lily the milking goat went after many years of doing it twice a day,I couldn't go down the garden for two months... I do own two ewes who it is my intention to bring home this winter for lambing but. I'm old so they may have to stay with a friend still. Anyway, thank you again for cheering up an old gal. Fox got a hen day before yesterday. Not much changes!!

I am so sorry to hear of Prudence's passing. Things like this do happen no matter what we do. Prudence had a good life and she was more appreciated than most animals and had a more interesting life than the animals grown in the huge corporate farms. I enjoy your reflective moments and comments.
Hi Pete, do animals know whats going on when one of them dies, I think they do, I read an article in a German paper about a small holder who had a few Heifers, when he died he was laid to rest in the next villiage to the one he had lived in some 3 miles away, after the funeral when they were sorting out the stock for sale there was a Hefier missing, they found it two days later lying beside the grave of the small holder, I'd like to know how did it know this,the mind boggles.
True. Heard of dogs doing this as well. I had a dog when I was a kid. Twice a day he would walk to the end of the road to meet me. He couldn’t see me, but soon as I came out of the woods he’d always be there. Animals can’t tell time, but I think they know more than we think they do. The mind boggles indeed.
I would be happy to watch a video of you cleaning tractor parts. It’s all part of restoration. So sorry to hear about Prudence, you gave her a good life.
When our lowline cow, Fantasy, died un-expectly overnight we cried. (she was 4years old and in calf) My wife treated her like a child and could do anything with her. She calmed other cows and livestock and set a great example for the other livestock. I still get upset thinking about it as I will never know why she died. But on a farm - such is life.
This reminds me of my grandfather--when I was a kid, he had a cow slip in a pond and drown. He was so down and I didn't understand. Ezra is without a doubt a shoulder cat! We have one of those here. She'll jump on my heavy jacket just to get on my shoulder in the orchard! When you replant glorious asparagus, put them in deep wood chips and cull the females so you don't get all the new seedlings crowding out the bed. More space is more better! If 18 inch spacing is recommended, go with 24 inches. Pile on a few inches of wood chip compost every year. We love our asparagus! We have 120 or so plants in the ground and thus year is the first year every bit of it will be in full production. Can't wait! Mary Washington, Jersey Giant, purple passion, and conover's colossal. I don't know much, but I know asparagus loves some deep woodchips!

This channel has been extremely valuable and rewarding to me. I cannot thank you enough, as I haven’t farmed since I was just a kid, but like you, I have aspirations to get back into it when I escape the rat race of city life. You have quite and operation there. I probably missed it but would love to see you do a piece on “the average day in the life of farming.” Although, as I recall, no two days were exactly the same, the grunt work mostly felt like “groundhog days”. Covering things like, what time you get up everyday? What time do you start working? What activities you do and what order you do them in. What your wife and kids do to help or what aspects they routinely cover. For instance, the idea would be to cover the typical week; all of the bare minimum tasks, activities, and things you have to do just to maintain the stock. Maybe even do a piece for each season over the course of the year and highlight what is different but leave out the atypical things.
I am not a farmer but a former Wisconsin resident. I enjoy watching the seasons change-especially the winter. I live in South Korea now and am enjoying your videos. Thank you!😉👍

@@blessedbyond I don't think so to be honest. I would probably be opposite politically to those claiming this. People like me are in no way anti-farm. We like good, healthy, organic food (I'm not THAT deep into it, food is food, but i don't disagree with those things). You only get that from farms. Small local farms are the best. We don't like corporate mega farms with cruelty issues, and yea less cows would be better for the environment. I love steak though. Would love to figure out how to grow just the meat itself in a lab with none of the downsides and perfect replication of taste and texture, current options aren't there yet. Personally more automation would be sweet. I think the more we can remove hard human labor the happier people will be and the more enjoyable and comfortable their work can be. I enjoy this guy's videos, he seems happy with what he does. Not everyone is happy working that hard and I don't think thats a negative thing. People shouldn't have to work this hard if we can help it, and I think we are at a point in history that we can. That frees people up to enjoy life more rather than work their life away. Maybe people like Pete would keep doing their thing because they enjoy it. Not everyone gets to enjoy the work they have to do to survive.
Anyway rambling at this point. Long story short, even though we probably live different lives, I still love and respect farmers (I'm actually going to the farmers market for the first time in a while tomorrow morning just because I saw Pete's videos yesterday, and my dad recently started farming Texas Long Horn cattle)
It's hard to loose any animal but it hurts the most when you get attached to it 💔
So sorry for the loss of prudence. Yes we do get attached to our animals but it is part of life as painful as it is. I think the other cows know and pay they’re respects too! Another good video!!!
Pete, it is part of farming, hard as it is. She was well cared for at your farm, so you should be happy for the time she was part of your place. As far as politely asked that people not send you things, you did it very well. It can be overwhelming. Love your videos. Be safe.

I used to be a Hay Dealer years ago. got around to lots of farms all the way from Hancock ma. out to Rochester, seen tons of animals of all kinds lots of Dairy. breeding farms etc. and the way a lot of the farmers handled and treated the animals they had under their care. and you are at the top of my list for one of the Best in animal care Pete. and I'm not just blowing smoke at you. you really care and that shows. I for one after all the "treatments" I've seen over the years know "Care" when I see it. thank you for that and God Speed.ECF

I am sorry for the loss of Prudence. It's never easy to lose an animal. Especially so for a favourite.
We have Herefords, most of which were born on the farm at this point, and we keep the vast majority of our girls for their whole lives. We are very lucky in our community that our local excavator, who also digs the graves in our cemetery, will come to the farm at a moment's notice for animal burials. We have a cow cemetery up on a hill at the back of the farm, and it's nice to be able to go back there and "visit" the old girls we got a chance to know and love (even the ones who were jerks).

When a cow dies in a herd the rest of the cattle will stand around them, like you said, kind of a memorial or a funeral, we had one died and dragged it off with a tractor and the cattle were bawling and hollering and following us

My condolences. Growing up on a farm, as a kid-I got numb to death. My Dad named a heifer Pam. Then he butchered her, because he had to go clear to her don’t know how to say it, but her calf was turned wrong. But she sure did taste good. I think you are the best and most caring farmer I have ever met. You are the best Pete. The very best. I cannot tell you how much I need to see your videos. ❤️
No matter how much you get used to animals coming and going, a longtime member of the herd dying is heart breaking. Like loosing a friend or family member. Take time Pete, Hillary, and family. You essentially lost a loved one. Pay your respects, Prudence earned them. No matter what people say, us farming love our animals, all of them.

I know your feelings. When you care for critters on a daily basis, they become your extended family members. Your animals are very well taken care of, it shows! Keep your head and caring spirit up! You’re doing a GREAT job! 👍
Tough when that happens. It's worth a few tears then you move on. I do believe cows know. We had a cow named Valerie that I was very attached to. The cows that stood on either side Molly and Emma went down in milk production for a few days but then they came around to as we all do. I sense even Ezra knows through you to. I know the farm will rally. There's no other place to go than up.
I am sad that Prudence is gone. Over time, I suspect that another will come along. But I do think that cows are special and deserve the very best care. OleDave😢
We're there with you. In the 8 years we've owned a pasture in South Carolina, we've returned one cow, two bulls, and a horse to the land. It's never easy, but it's part of the life.

My great aunt and uncle raised white-faced Herford cattle on their farm near Elberfeld, Ind. The ground was hilly and partially wooded, surrounded by coal mines. They all had names and when one died it liked to kill my aunt Lois. Uncle Don had two International Harvester tractors -- an M and an H (one of the reasons I enjoy watching your tractor repair/rebuilding videos so much). I drove the H when I was little but the M was plagued with a bad radiator. Uncle Don always had trouble finding parts because they were kind of isolated. There were many family farms in the area and everybody knew one another. The women -- and sometimes men -- would help with canning vegetables when the gardens were producing. I remember one time we helped a lady down the road snap and can three bushels of butter beans. Many years later, It dawned upon me that I got to witness the very last chapter of subsistence farming in their region -- before the days that farms became hundreds of acres instead of dozens. When you are young and just living through the experience it did not mean that much to you. With age the experiences grow in value. I have heard that feeding chickens chia seeds increases the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids in the eggs. Have you ever tried that? I remember when I lived in the D.C. area, Frank Purdue used to feed marigold seeds to his chickens and it gave the skin a yellow color. We have nothing like that enormous Farmer's Market like you have there in your area, despite the fact that we are surrounded by hundreds of farms in this Tri-State area. Today, all that was that little 80 acre farm of my relatives is long gone -- a new owner tore down all the buildings and the fence rows. They re-contoured the ground to do away with the stock pond that I caught fish in when I was a child. The woods is still there, however, and there are blackberry briars on the back side that are still there. I have been picking blackberries from those briars for over 50 years. Although I will never be able to own that property, when I walk through the trees I always feel a sense of belonging and familiarity that extends back to the days of my youth when you could breathe the clean country air and late in the day often hear an old two-lunger John Deere tractor plowing a field on an adjacent farm.
RIP Prudence. May you find the greenest pastures in the great beyond.
Pete, I think I can say I feel your loss. I would think it to be similar to when a pet like a cat or dog passes away. It is the loss of a family member. You showed there is a healthy way to grieve and to honor who has passed. Thank you Pete and Hillary, you have an honest wholesome way of living and philosophy. I enjoy you sharing it with me.

Oh no Prudence!!! She had a great life on your farm. You all are good to your animals. As for cows knowing, I am sure they know. They are smart animals. I am glad she had her cow family with her when she passed and was not alone.

My grandfather always said"better outside than inside the home " The cows on milking would follow each other and wait for the door to open. Some cows were 18 years old and each would find their space. When the older cows died he always buried each and the cows always would smell the cow on the trailer and then stand looking on. He always missed talking to each cow who passed.
My grandfather milked until he was 91years old. He was like the cows slow and steady with a little hand scratching and talk(.....). He would say, "to say goodbye and look to the younger one." They are family to the end.

Pete, coming from a farming background, my heart aches for you and your wife.. As you said, life and death are just part of living on a farm. It does not soften the blow, other than to know you are not alone in this life, and when you think about it, there are a lot more Good days, good memories, than bad ones. We live in the good memories. I feel for those that live in the cold cities, without noticing the singing of a bird, the sound of wind in the trees, the grunt of a pig or the mooing of a cow. My favorite sound is the sad song of a loon. But that is me. I really love a barn cat crawling in my lap, with a soft meow, and falling asleep. Remember to smile.

Dammit Pete, you made me cry. So sorry for your loss. We have an elderly cow here on my Parents farm that is the very last of our original line from 40 years ago. She was never around a bull so we had no calves from her to carry on the line...going to miss old red cow when she is gone.

Three Winters back I lost my lead ewe of my flock, for no apparent reason, 2 days before Christmas. She was 10 years old. She was such a sweet soul. You truly don't know how much you have bonded with them until they're gone.

I feel for you, Pete. I just lost my first cow. Had her since 2003. Took her in as a bottle calf. She was our most reliable producer and a matriarch of the herd. Always lead cow. Loved her brisket scratches and the top of her tail rubbed. Her name was Kathy.
Anywho, concerning your feed issues, maybe a little higher protein feed will get you there. Try whole cotton seed and flaked corn. Cotton seed is pretty cheap right now down here in Texas, but that may not be the case up your way.
You’re probably right about genetics being a factor. Dexter do just as well on grass alone, and it’s possible that no matter what you do nothing will increase their average daily gain.
We run Herefords and angus. They blow up on the cottonseed/corn combo.
I know that this video is two years old. But i want to say that I am sorry about Prudence I remember seeing her being pointed out by you

Pete, I've enjoyed all your videos for a while now, first time I've left a comment. Like all your videos, your calming voice explaining things around the farm. How you talk to all your animals, and even though they don't talk, they respond in their own way. We can all see the connection of respect. Even when it's time to prepare an animal for consumption, your approach towards the animal is with utmost respect and thankfulness. I'm a city boy, but I've always been fond of horses, cattle, pigs etc. I would love to be a ranch hand, or help someone like you. The closest I've come to that is when was a kid I always loved going to the Stock Show and Rodeo. Just seeing the animals up close and their size, is a different feel in person. Also the smell of livestock is like no other, in a good way. This video of losing Prudence was emotional for me as well, like she was part of my family. When I saw the Title of the video, I'm like Oh No What Happen. To watch you and Hillary mourn her loss, and explaining how you first met Prudence coming up to you, and your emotions were evident and sincere. Back in the day I've seen videos of ranchers being abusive to animals and would try to run away from being hit or shocked, stressing the animal out. Your story is fascinating, from Corporate to the farm. I've learned so much from your knowledge and storytelling. Lastly, I lost my wife 5 years ago, and I'm so envious of you and Hillary. She's such a sweetheart. You sir are living the Dream my friend. Well Done, and Ill be watching...

Sorry about the unexpected loss. Losing an anchor animal prematurely hurts. I never thought about the plastic use on baleage but I remember your idealism previous video and there's plastic albeit less with net wrap around the round bales if you purchase. (which makes me like the twine baler you have). Lastly, I'm holding out for your farm Bootcamp (paid) where we could come up for a day or so to personally grow from you. Learning to contribute and not follow ;)

I grew up on a small farm like yours. We had 10 cows and hundreds of pigs. My favorite cow died from oak leaf poisoning when I around 12 years old. I remember staying by her and crying that day. You learn a lot about life and death growing up on a farm. I feel for you guys.

We lost our prized ewe during labor last Spring and I can totally relate. I’m very sorry 😞 when I first bought the farm, I lost a yearling steer and a lamb down into an old well in a freak accident

So sad,sorry! Lester from Ima Survivor Sanctuary lost an animal to a groundswell too a few months ago. They just didn't know it was so unsafe and they were heartbroken.

I actually watched a video of a farmer that makes hay tea for his cattle. I don’t remember what he said the benefits were.
I've only just started watching your, videos from here in the UK and absolutely Love them. For more than thirty years we had a microholding in our long narrow mid town garden with its perfect little stable yard in an 'L' at the bottom. During that time we raised pigs, two Jersey cows from calves, sheep (lambed over 100 lambs over that time), milking goat, ducks, quail, chickens, oh and horses. Like a jigsaw keeping everyone happy in or out on rented pasture but it worked and your videos bring back happy - and sad - memories. When Lily the milking goat went after many years of doing it twice a day,I couldn't go down the garden for two months... I do own two ewes who it is my intention to bring home this winter for lambing but. I'm old so they may have to stay with a friend still. Anyway, thank you again for cheering up an old gal. Fox got a hen day before yesterday. Not much changes!!

I am so sorry to hear of Prudence's passing. Things like this do happen no matter what we do. Prudence had a good life and she was more appreciated than most animals and had a more interesting life than the animals grown in the huge corporate farms. I enjoy your reflective moments and comments.
Hi Pete, do animals know whats going on when one of them dies, I think they do, I read an article in a German paper about a small holder who had a few Heifers, when he died he was laid to rest in the next villiage to the one he had lived in some 3 miles away, after the funeral when they were sorting out the stock for sale there was a Hefier missing, they found it two days later lying beside the grave of the small holder, I'd like to know how did it know this,the mind boggles.
True. Heard of dogs doing this as well. I had a dog when I was a kid. Twice a day he would walk to the end of the road to meet me. He couldn’t see me, but soon as I came out of the woods he’d always be there.
Animals can’t tell time, but I think they know more than we think they do. The mind boggles indeed.

When our lowline cow, Fantasy, died un-expectly overnight we cried. (she was 4years old and in calf) My wife treated her like a child and could do anything with her. She calmed other cows and livestock and set a great example for the other livestock.
I still get upset thinking about it as I will never know why she died. But on a farm - such is life.

This reminds me of my grandfather--when I was a kid, he had a cow slip in a pond and drown. He was so down and I didn't understand.
Ezra is without a doubt a shoulder cat! We have one of those here. She'll jump on my heavy jacket just to get on my shoulder in the orchard!
When you replant glorious asparagus, put them in deep wood chips and cull the females so you don't get all the new seedlings crowding out the bed. More space is more better! If 18 inch spacing is recommended, go with 24 inches. Pile on a few inches of wood chip compost every year. We love our asparagus! We have 120 or so plants in the ground and thus year is the first year every bit of it will be in full production. Can't wait! Mary Washington, Jersey Giant, purple passion, and conover's colossal. I don't know much, but I know asparagus loves some deep woodchips!

This channel has been extremely valuable and rewarding to me. I cannot thank you enough, as I haven’t farmed since I was just a kid, but like you, I have aspirations to get back into it when I escape the rat race of city life. You have quite and operation there. I probably missed it but would love to see you do a piece on “the average day in the life of farming.” Although, as I recall, no two days were exactly the same, the grunt work mostly felt like “groundhog days”. Covering things like, what time you get up everyday? What time do you start working? What activities you do and what order you do them in. What your wife and kids do to help or what aspects they routinely cover. For instance, the idea would be to cover the typical week; all of the bare minimum tasks, activities, and things you have to do just to maintain the stock. Maybe even do a piece for each season over the course of the year and highlight what is different but leave out the atypical things.
