Great video Sam with amazing scenery. Another place in the South Island I haven't been. I presume the battery on the Triumph gets replaced. No good for stress though. Is it possible to put a bigger battery in your existing Energica? Wish I was young again watching you and Jen. Great video editing and as usual your efforts are appreciated! Stay safe! 😊
Thanks Gary! The next episode will have more views of Milford Sound. We hopped on a boat tour around the fjords and really lucked out with the weather. It's definitely possible to swap the newer/bigger battery into my bike, but cheaper to sell my bike and buy a new one. That's a weird dilemma, because it isn't environmentally friendly to build another motorcycle, but then there would be 2 electric motorcycles, so that's one less person riding a petrol one. This ride definitely confirmed that I need an upgrade.
Hey thanks for the awesome videos. It just so happened I did a motorcycle trip down there before Xmas to see a very good friend of mine who lives in Te Anau. Did the Milford road too. As some one who has not done a lot of motorcycle touring it was an awesome experience. Cool to see you covering the same terrain.

Ohh, it nearly killed me watching you bump starting the Triumph. Doing that in full kit with a helmet is like the most intense workout and nearly killed me the last time I did it.
I know there's more to the Triumph's issues coming, but that battery not charging situation is so much like when my Honda CBF 1000 has died on me through a dead regulator rectifier. And of course, it's always when you're on holiday too.
Hahaha maaan, always. Yeah you called it.. stator, regulator, rectifier, whatever else in the charging system. That was a big problem, but not the problem that killed the bike 😳😵
What no cliffhanger? I'm waiting to see if the battery was dud or the alternator not charging it.

Oh nice! Haha nah, nothing suspenseful at the end, but the suspense will definitely continue in the next episode. I have a feeling the alternator / stator was partially to blame, but there were other problems that eventually killed it 😁👍

Oh it was. That was the best road so far, with the most beautiful scenery of all NZ, in my opinion! There's another road we found later though that we agreed was the highlight of the trip.. but that'll have to wait 😁

With a couple of feet of snow outside I can't wait to get back out and ride with two wheels. My ATV has been doing what it can for me, but it's too deep right now. Awesome vid.

If the Triumph has a bad battery or bad regulator,that is the first thing to replace. An unstable supply voltage can affect the fuel injection and the ignition.The "mechanic" in Queenstown should have done that first.
Engine temperate rising when the bike is stationary or moving slowly is absolutely normal. Bikes have an electric cooling fan that is thermostatically controlled. The fan typically turns on when the engine temperature reaches the upper limit. When the bike is stationary there is no cooling airflow through the radiator until it gets hot enough for the fan to start.
My MT09s run at 73 ℃ when moving ,at stand still the temperature rises to 105 ℃ and then the fan switches on.
The Triumph appears to switch its fan on at 96 ℃
Yeah for sure. I don't think he had enough time, and definitely didn't have those parts on hand to swap in. It wasn't having starting issues at the time so I guess that was hard to diagnose.
And here I was thinking that you'd trade the Triumph in, this episode. Great vid nonetheless!
Haha oh yeah, we didn't have time at that point, but we definitely talked about our options. In the next episode I think we have a conversation about how to finish the trip.
Not sure if that was mentioned already: These 50kW Tritium Veefil charger have an E-Stop button located at the bottom. This button can be used to reboot the charger by pressing, waiting a few seconds and then releasing it by twisting it. It takes a minute or 2 but In my experience this reboot fixes the issues in 90% of all cases. Also, a few times the charger did not work because someone (funny) had pressed that button.
Car journalists do this all the time. "we were depending on the charger, but it developed a fault so we had to call a tow truck". It's in almost every electric car story.
Oh yeah great point. This was an interesting one though.. the tech on the phone reset it and got a different error, so they did some mysterious fix to it and it worked. That's the frustrating part.

An Akira AND a Shadow of the Colossus reference? Is it my birthday? ...actually, it *is* this time! Those huge mountain sides are so awesome looking. Also, I would have wondered if there wasn't a loose connection if power isn't getting from the battery to the engine, that or something like a short was draining it... but then it being a gas bike, the engine could always be the culprit the entire time even with an electrical problem, but then it smoothes out... which makes me think "calm before the storm."
Whoa, happy birthday! 😁 Glad ya liked it. Ico and Shadow were so good, and yet I've had The Last Guardian on my shelf for years and still haven't played it. Might be time! Yeah my first guess was the stator / alternator / whatever they call it on bikes, but usually when the alternator dies, the engine doesn't stay on. I could be totally wrong. In my defense, gas engines are suoer complicated so any combination of things could have caused this 😂

I drove around south Is before xmas, routes from picton to collingwood over takaka hill and route from westport to karamea would be great on a bike, I was in a car but wished I was riding my bike!
Oh yeah! Those areas are on my list for next time. I'm bummed we didn't get to go to Abel Tasman and out to Golden Bay but we ran out of time and encountered a terminal problem with the Triumph right before that. Next time!

A battery not charging is usually not a dead battery but something wrong with the charging or electrical system.
Batteries are damage when uncharged for too long, rarely when being used.
But we'll see in the next episode I guess
Yeah it was most likely the stator or something, but the bike continued to idle just fine, so we were really confused. Usually if the alternator dies and the battery is flat, the engine also dies, but my experience with gas engines is pretty limited.
A bit of drama keep the plot interesting 😆

I was going to write that you need to buy one more Energica for Jen or convert the Triumph to electric but since its ok i will write that your adventure trip is way better than the one way up.

Your issue reminds me of when my speed triple would not charge while running but no warning light. Points to Stator and/or Rectifier. Hope you got it fixed easily

Seems exactly like a bad battery connection. Sometimes cleaning and re-tightening the posts is all you need.

I was curious if the Energica has the stamina to make the trip from Te Anau to Milford Sound. We have had a few early Leafs stay at our camp doing the same run with mixed results. All having fun but not all making the range of the Energica, I guess those few missing bars on a full battery add to the excitement.
Whoa nice! That's a good point. Even driving super slow in a 1st gen Leaf would be difficult. I understand why there's no fast charger there though.
@@NewZeroland We are starting to prepare for installing chargers for the new gen campers. Some camps have started already after the camper hire companies started experimenting with EV vans. Multiple 22kw outlets need an expensive supply in so its going to be gradual. Milford is a challenge for any infrastructure being to remote. Great series.

It still exists but there's a lot less of it. When white people invaded, they got their asses kicked by the natives and had to call a truce, so it's a different feeling to most countries 😂

is it not possible to use kinetic energy to charge electric motorcycles while its running ? isnt it more convinient ? even if its not generating power equal to actualy charging it. is great to regain power while running thus giving the bike more milage.
Yeah it is possible. Most electric vehicles have regen, putting power back into the battery when you slow down. You can also adjust how strongly it regenerates power. Pretty awesome!

@@jolive3743 Great question! I pressed the button ~5 years ago when I bought my Zero SR. It was the end of 2015 and I felt like that was such a futuristic sci-fi year, so we should be riding futuristic sci-fi motorcycles. At the time 80-100 miles was enough for me, but a year later I bought some fast chargers to start taking the Zero further. I got it up to 325 miles in a day. But the charging infrastructure here isn't that great for Zeros so I went the Energica route. I took my current bike over 440 miles in a day relatively easily! Now the new Energica+ models can do 100 miles at highway speed, so I think that'll be my next bike 😁👍
@@NewZeroland i think i said a while back (in a diff convo) that i want to swap mountain biking round the world, for one of these but there still isn't anything capable enough for me to just get on and fuck off for six months.
I found the Artisan Kolter but i think if i put a fast charger on it the Batteries will fry, i've yet to get a definitive answer out of the suppliers.

I thought you said the mechanic at that last stop said the triumph engine was toast ?......A dead battery has nothing whatsoever to do with the engine condition ?......So what's up with that.
A bad charging system could have caused the missfiring, which could have caused the overheating. It would have taken too much time for the mechanic to find out 😂

It depends on your country's laws, but certain Zeros are learner-approved, and certain ones aren't. Energicas require full licenses. I'm sure you could use one to pass the test though.

This video is an all in one cure video. Cured of ever buying a Triumph, second one I've seen doing this in NZ and never buy a electric bike to use outside a city. Sitting around waiting for a charge is just plain inconvenient and unrealistic when long distance touring.
Haha well this is partly a Triumph problem and partly a used-bike problem. It's hard when you inherit unknown issues from the previous owner(s). And the electric bike thing.. my charging stops were between 15-20 min, so I wouldn't say they were inconvenient at all. A lot of those charges were FREE.
Zero tolerance for 1 kph over? That's ridiculous. 1 kph is nothing. The radar can have an error that big and i know speedometers have bigger errors.. What is the point of the speed limit then? You have to do 5 kph under just to make sure you never go 1 over.
Yep, pretty strict. Usually cops are chill if you go 4 kph over, but around Christmas there are too many accidents so they're out for blood.
