    I live in Auckland NZ and see Nissan leafs everywhere, they are very popular for the daily commute and those numerous short distance hops. My wife owns one with 8 bars and it has plenty of range for her needs, so we only ever charge it at home. I am waiting for 2nd hand Chinese EV's to hit the market here and then I will convert to electric as well, BYD and MG are looking to be popular EV brands and there are a lot of Teslas on the road but they are too pricey for my budget. The Toyota Prius and Aqua are extremely popular for hybrid buyers. The only vehicle type bucking the trend are large gas guzzling pickups

    Oh no. Mine is now 56%SOH so I have some of the same experiences as you. Note that the DC chargers tend to report the SOC incorrectly for early Leafs. Leaf Spy Pro is a great investment. It means that you know exactly how may kWh you have remaining so takes a lot of stress out of the "can I make it home?" situation. I have kept a record of how many kWh I need to get home from various landmarks, so when in doubt I consult the list, check Leaf Spy, and know then if I need to hypermile it, or if I can put my foot down and turn on the heater. For this, you need the Leaf Spy Pro version, which is not free, and a suitable OBD2 dongle ( I can lend you my spare, but it works with android phones only). Leaf Spy Pro also logs trip data when it is on, so you get a file of distance, energy, time, date, etc that you can download and open with Excel. But, you’re dead right, your Leaf cost you less, per available kWh, than any other EV on the market, and it still can do 90% of your daily driver journeys.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooooo ok now I definitely need to try that. This works for ALL Leaf models AFTER you've dropped that first bar. But here goes:
    RemainngBatteryMax% = 100 * RemainingBars / 13 (Approximately)
    RemaingBatteryMin% = RemaingBatteryMax% - 7.6%
    Leaf Bar Chart
    11Bars = Between 85% and 77%
    10Bars= Between 77% and 69%
    9 Bars= Between 69% and 62%
    8 Bars= Between 62% and 54%
    7 Bars= Between 54% and 46%
    6 Bars= Between 46% and 38%
    5 Bars= Between 38% and 31%
    4 Bars= Between 31% and 23%
    3 Bars= Between 23% and 15%
    2 Bars= Between 15% and 8%
    1 Bars= Between 8% and Completely Knackered%
    EstimatedMilage = Manufacturer'sNewCarMileage * RemainingBattery% / 100
    So in your case of a 22KwH (as it's this 22KwH that the display is giving bars against, not the 24KwH)
    Your RemainingBattery% at 5 Bars is between 38% and 31%. Which equates to between 8.3KwH and 6.8KwH
    So, as a rough guide for other Leaf owners, this formula was pretty close to your actual figure when correcting your maths. As your capacity actually worked out as 6.6KwH :) That's 3.1KwH / (94% - 47%) * 100% = 6.6 KwH
    Fun video. Nice to know some people are still patient. Nice one!

Brother-in-law sold the I-Pace to a dealership and bought a Chinese build-your-own EV. Literally weeks after the sale, Jag puts out a recall notice for the 90 kw battery that apparently will spontaneously combust if not fixed. From all "1st gen EVs", the Leaf has from far the worst battery in term of lifetime, unfortunately... I remember academic studies comparing batteries from Renault Zoe, BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf that showed clearly this fact, even in the very first years of the batteries lifetime. The decay of the SoH (State-of-Health) curve was really faster than the other ones.
    I could only advise potentiel buyers to avoid this particular model, even if it is really cheap.
    But more than that, if the capacity you estimate is correct, then that means your Leaf has around 25% of SoH... That is crazy low, and probably indicate that your battery is dying... Usually, a typical SoH curve as a function of time (or cycles) is linear at the beggining (from 100% SoH to 80% you loose like 1-2%/year), but at some point there is a knee point from which the degradation rate accelerates. That brings exponential SoH loss and I am afraid that is what you are experiencing. My bet is you will only be able to use this battery for some tens of cycles maximum before reaching sudden death...
    In your situation, I would consider contacting Nissan to know how much it would cost you to swap the battery for a new one. That might be your better option, if the rest of the car is in good condition (no rust on the frame or stuff like that).
    Sorry to bring the bad news here. Peace and (electric) ride from France ☮🏍

      After reading other comments: yes it might be a good idea to make a re-balance of the modules, if that is not expensive. That will help you gain some range and buy you some time before it dies.
      Also more generally speaking, it is time now that politicians pass regulations forcing the vendor to display the SoH of used car. I know that the European Union is about to do so, I hope that will inspire New Zealand and the rest of the world.

    Some fab points made in the vid, amazing a simple journey becomes a time consuming experience in a region with many (but still not enough) chargers, the issue gets worse when you leave the CBD's. NZ's anemic install of infrastructure (outside CBD's) is horrendous. Example: Taranaki is still in the dark ages with facilities that can be counted on 1 hand. New Plyth to Hawera has nil chargers (unless one wants a 88km round trip diversion from Stratford to Opunake). Waikato to New Plyth is a joke, the unit at Mokau is a 100% guaranteed lengthy wait time.
    Lost many hours finding/waiting for charging. Last trip incurred 3hours plus of lost time waiting for chargers. It's not BEV capacity issues, the cars are fab, its long wait times or trying to locate non-faulty chargers to get a top up (not full charge).
    'The Lines Company' of Te Kuiti does a fab scheme, they charge users a time fee, so if users 'abandon' their cars for long lunches/shopping/ignorance users are hit in the pocket. Works pretty well, keeps things churning.
    NZ needs to pull its finger out to quadruple charging locations (outside of CBD's) to meet current demand let alone the double digit growth if the last few years are an indicator of BEV growth.
    Companies using BEV's (for use outside of CBD's) must be losing productivity/time (& staff having their days extend well beyond hours at their expense & loss of personal time) hand over fist.
