  • In this episode of Imagine Travel we explore some of the different options you have to live in Colombia. Being an Ex-Pat is an incredibly rewarding life choice. Living abroad is both exciting and challenging. I have found that living in another country has expanded my knowledge about the world and cultures beyond just travelling. If you are interested in living in or spending an extended period of time in another country, I highly recommend Colombia. The entry requirements for Colombia are MUCH more reasonable than the majority of other countries that offer the same standard of living.
Colombia is one of the countries of the world that provides MANY accessible options to stay in the country for an extended period of time. There are tons of options for Visas, Residency Permits, Migration Visas, etc. that are very reasonable when compared with some other countries of the world. Please use the links in the description to determine if you need a visa and how much time you can stay in the country legally.
*NOTE: Google Chrome can translate web pages if necessary.
Start your search with the Chancellery to determine IF/WHAT Visa you need:

So you can stay for 180 days, and then you need to leave. How long do you need to stay out of the country before you can come back? And those capers on our soup are HUGE! YUM~

Thanks @Carla Macdonnell! You can stay in Colombia as a tourist for 180 days every calendar year. So if you time it right, it's technically possible to stay in Colombia as a tourist for 1 year and only leave the country once.

It should be very easy. Just go to the Migracion Colombia website. There you can find the information about a tourist visa from your country. Cheers!

The most significant FINANCIAL factor in obtaining the M-11 visa (retired) is a vaguely/unstipulated by Migracon on the website, of health insurance requirements. This insurance MONTHLY premium can easily range from $400(US) per month to $2,000(US) per month...depending face value/coverage of the policy. As an experienced hand with Colombian visas, can you shed some light on "policy coverage" requirements in obtaining a visa?

Hello R Henderson. I know there are expat insurance policies that are available. However, I have an. “M” migrant visa and I have Colombian government medical coverage. I have used it several times and it usually costs me less than $1 USD per office visit. I was not required to prove medical coverage when I applied for my visa. But, because I am a “migrant” I have legal rights and medical coverage provided by the government. I hope this gives you another avenue to look down when researching your situation. Maybe you will be qualified for the government healthcare if you become a “migrant” citizen.

If you are married to a Colombian citizen you have the opportunity for a long-term migrant visa. After 5 years (this changes often so check the government website) you can be eligible for permanent residency. If you have a child with a Colombian citizen you are also eligible for residency.

I have kenyan passport how should I come to colombia

Hello Khadar Sheikh. I believe Kenyan citizens need to apply for a visa to enter Colombia. The tourist visa is usually valid for 90 days upon entry. You can apply online with Migracion Colombia, or in person at the Colombian Embassy in Kenya. Submit the required documents, pay the fee, receive your visa, and then have fun traveling this beautiful country! I hope this helps a little. Cheers!
