    Brilliant old school solution that simply reverses the polarity to the motor for up and down. Not rocket science but certainly more than most people could do, Nice job! Looking forward to a video on the 1200nm journey to panama.

      yes, nice fix! These actuators should switch themselves off at end of travel, so I wonder what special thing this $800 box did.

      Thank you so much for your kind words and for being here! I’m not an electric wizard but learned a few things through my life with old boats and cars. My vintage car had similar solutions so that’s where my idea origin from. All the best and cheers 🍻

    Clever solution, well done. With the way tech is miniaturising and going hand held, I can see stand-alone tech being sufficient (battery systems, nav etc) for many sailors who choose to do without ALL the land based luxuries.

      Thank you so much for watching and your comment. The more advanced things onboard the more that fails. Sometimes I dream about a really low tec boat without WiFi Bluetooth systems and computers everywhere. At the same time having house hold amenities like washer etc makes me a home feeling I’m not camping. So it’s a balance I guess. All the best and cheers 🍻

    Definitely agree that life is getting too complex, no time for the things that matter. It seems a trivial complaint but it's actually a very important factor in finding true happiness - people spending all their effort on the tech rather than benefitting from the actual experience.
    Congrats on episode 100!

    This is so right. Too much built in complexity waiting to develop a problem. The same thing happened to cars. We used to be able to work on our motor and now you can’t even find it under the hood. Fixing things requires computers and software in addition to very special parts.

    Good one Thomas. Pretty clever fix on the door opener. I agree on the over technical issue, particularly with smaller ancillary systems. Trouble with these is designers get a low grade Micro Controller board made up, and they are less robust due to budget issues. And you can’t carry spare parts for every little facility. …So … based on that I am making a policy for my boat to base all smaller systems on Arduino electronics boards that then plug into the hardware feature of each facility. This way I can carry 10 spare boards, all loaded with the software for every function. Pull a failed board out, set the dip switches on the replacement to be the same as the one coming out, and I will be back up and running as long as it was a processor problem. I was looking at the Carling central switching modules, but then realized that to loose that much functionality to a lightning strike at sea or in a remote place was begging for failure. Had they make the brain of the unit an Arduino, rather than use their own microcontroller, it would be a simple fix to be back up and running. So thanks for that little worked example of how little things can go wrong. I like this new direction. I bought a bunch of Arduino processors and sensors to learn how to use them, now I am going to have to learn more quickly how to use and integrate them.

      Or just do without the electronics.

    • @williambunting803
      @williambunting803 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PaulBKal “Or just do without the electronics?” This is something that we can do. You can use a motor/generator to condition energy from solar panels for charging batteries, and it is something that may be necessary in a distant distopian future where the highly sequential electronics industry has collapsed due to climate change. However, quality electronics is a benefit to us all and we need to support that development through purchasing. Automotive electronics is proving to be relatively bulletproof, so the development of electronics to survive extreme environments is possible.

    Seen this before, mini computer when a couple of relays would do it. Nice that you found applicable relays locally. I have done similar up/down control by stringing 4 on/off relays together....very messy install. Yours looks nice and clean.
    Idk why manufacturers do this... possibly cheaper/faster during production/less wire idk.

    Take a look at Holly on her TH-cam channel "Wind Hippy Sailing". She has a totally uncomplicated but functional set up on her 27 footer. She keeps the boat going in far away places on very little money. All the fancy things you have on your boat require lots of maintenance. You have good, professional support in Martinique. I fear for how you will maintain those items when you get to some far off Pacific atoll. I think for an offshore sailor in far away places, there is a lot to be said for the KISS approach: "Keep It Simple, Stupid". My fear relates to my desire for you to have successful adventures, because I very much enjoy your videos and always wish you well.

    Good on the 100th episode. As far as the complication of things, it comes with luxuries, and most times unnecessarily really. The more electronic things, the more things to break down and more complications. Some see some luxuries as such, and to some they are necessities. Such is life!

    Im with you - I enjoy progress and problem solving but I prefer adventure, sailing and time with people. Hauling dinghy around, even with davits is a pain but its manageable & predictable. Frankly some of the things we do even on land for ease and comfort - I look now across our kitchen at a rumbling ice-maker and dishwasher. Our grandparents lives were not so much more miserable for occasionally having to wash up or wait for ice. As I look to my next boat Im thinking to allocating points for complexity to all components on board and weighting performance, safety and comfort factors. Has someone has done this before?

    • @SailingwithThomas
      @SailingwithThomas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I’m with you! Less is more in so many ways. Keep it stupid simple and it’s more time for fun and sailing. My first sailboat I could go on holiday with some decades ago was so simple yet functional in so many ways. I bought it, sailed it a year and made money on it when I sold it. I did not spend a dollar or work on it, only joy! Many times I have looked back at this concluding with the fact it was not much to go wrong on it.

    We’ve chartered three boats with electric transom door openers, Beneteau, Jeanneau & Bavarian. None of them worked. In every case there was a rope tied to them and then around a winch to lift them up and lower them down. Each charter manager said they were more problem than anything else on their boats and regularly failed on the first charter! Owners like the idea of them but won’t pay for the constant repairs needed, so charter firms greatly preferred it if they were set up with rope and winch from the get go. They are a classic case of a completely unnecessary complication on a sailboat.

    • @SailingwithThomas
      @SailingwithThomas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your feedback and for watching! Yes I totally agree with you but that said the solution on BE FREE worked flawless for 7-8 years before it was destroyed at the hard by a heavy duty forklift. I believe you expose the truth about charters... In my opinion the fastest way to destroy a yacht is to put in charter.
      It could be lack of knowledge but also necessary information before sending clients out with a boat they don’t know. Guess if they knew the things I showed in this episodes the lifting systems would last longer. That said as I pointed out it’s not optimal solution for a charter boat. Lots of people jus give a shitt when it’s rented.
      Just look at the episode I made with the record of destroying catamarans in a week. Probably the worlds most expensive charter week ever. Only a hurricane could destroy more boats in a week than one company chartering 80 boats.

    Congrats on ep. 100, great work :)
    Regarding the linear actuators, do they have internal end stops preventing you to damage the gears or motors? Do they move in sync? If one moves faster than the other you can risk material damage.
    The computer probably have some sort of position feedback from the actuators, speed ramping and other stuff one often doesn't need.

    • @SailingwithThomas
      @SailingwithThomas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do have internal micro switches thats cut the power when at position up or down. I have also added a switch to override for manual calibration if needed. All the best and cheers 🍻

    Typically you do not wire the relays in parallel, but serially using their three-way contacts. That way the second relay has nothing to switch in case the first one is already active. No extra hardware needed and it saves you from blowing a fuse should a relay stick. I suspect the actuators are ramped and their current is watched in case of something blocking them, but 800 USD is not justified in any way. Yet another case where open hardware would help that is built to last and possible to diagnose and repair.

      Hi there! Thank you so much for watching. It’s several solutions evaluated from my side but no matter which alternative solution it would be some challenges. The “garage door/platform” is seriously heavy wich off course could be solved for the lifting process. However getting it synchronised would be a challenge as well as getting it open from closed position as it leans into the aft.
      I can barley push it out enough to have gravity to help me as I tried this and also made som solutions using my electric winches to close it.
      So end of the day original solution is a priority but also much faster and easier fix.
      All the best and cheers 🍻

    Hi Thomas, another very interesting Video! I am thinking to buy a Bavaria Cruiser 55 from a charter company in Greece. Last Weekend i went to Greece to see the boat. Fortunately it was a very rainy day and water was coming in on almost every window including the outside hull windows. I can fix the windows by myself no problem but the water is coming in since about 2 years and it was wet in the bilge and also in some compartments of the keel grid. Do you think it's a problem when water has been there for a longer time?

    Bad MOSFET under that heatsink I'd bet - your old school relays will last much better - I bet that board does 10 things for other optional items and thats why its so complex. Happy sailing and good luck!

      It has been crossing my mind. Who knows wat the future brings but at the moment I enjoy nice temperatures and palm trees. Most of my life have been cold water sailing in rough weathers, so what I’m doing now is a great change to me. All the best and cheers 🍻

    Hi Thomas, earlier i sent you a link to a remote control garage door opener but got deleted by TH-cam ( i do understand)... it would be great when approaching the closed transom from your dingy below. It cost a mere US$10 instead of the replacement $750+ and works with 6 to 30v DC... will send you that link again if keen. Cheers
