    I've used an old fashioned bumper jack, secured with steel wire, to pull up those green metal "permanent" fence and sign posts. If you could get it to grab on a ground rod (vice grips? Tack weld?) it should pull up a ground rod just as easily. FWIW.

      I've had luck wrapping a chain around them a couple of times and then hooking it back to its self. Not too many "bumper jacks" around anymore, but "HI-Lift" farm or off-roading jacks would work a treat. I've used a tractor's front end loader bucket to pluck ground rods.

    I had to remove a couple ground rods. One time I used a piece of thinwall conduit and I jumbled together some fittings to get a garden hose on one end. I slipped down the ground rod with the water running and it essentially drilled a cavity around the rod. Worked ok, not spectacular but worked. Another time I decided to let the soil itself do the work (typically rods end up with soil stuck to them that makes pulling them out hard). On this one I took a socket that is designed to remove bolts with stripped heads. It has reverse spiral grooves designed to grip the metal. I also have a substantial Milwaukee cordless impact driver. So I found a size that fit the rod well, put it in reverse and just spun the rod as fast as it would go and let the sand in the soil wear the clay off. After doing that for a minute or so I started moving the rod in larger circles to expand the hole size. I tried to pull the rod out with a couple pipe clamps but due to chest surgery I couldn't pull hard so I grabbed a farm jack and a chain and wrapped those around the pipe wrenches and it pulled out effortlessly, which is pretty impressive for the clay it was in. So the short story here is, be creative. It might just work.

    We've all been there, I struggled with the concept of a grounded hairpin match on my 10M yagi (actually, the entire antenna, mast, boom, elements, tower are grounded). Resistance and reactance are two different things...

    Hi Dave, I just purchased a vertical aluminum antenna, I wanted to put it on a fence post about a foot maybe 2 feet away from my house, but it is aluminum siding, will it cause interference, the house is about 12 feet tall and the antenna is 23 feet 4 inches

    You can use an old garden hose with no fitting over the end to force water around the ground rod in clay or sand to free it.
    But a rod pounded through rocks isn’t coming out without excavation.

    A further question to this video Dave...
    Is it better to have ground radiials elevated "above" ground, as opposed to laying flat "on" the ground?

      The farther from the ground, it will get better. You decrease ground losses by getting the antenna farther from ground. Of course, safety is the first concern and steps need to be taken to prevent entanglement with the radials.

    Many of the electronic technicians I worked with avoided RF circuits; they referred to RF as strange!
    To truly understand RF, I believe you have to understand Maxwell's equations. Many of the physicists and engineers struggle with these equations.
    RF behaves like other EM waves, i.e. it can be reflected, absorbed, refracted, travel in a straight line, etc.
    I am 77 and just learning about Maxwell's equations. It strains my brain to understand them! N0QFT, Glen

      There is a content creator who does a pretty good job with Maxwell's equations. Try Kathy Loves Physics. It's a mind blower. There are other content creators out there, but she is pretty easy to understand.
