You are the first person I have watched who has explained how the high leverage is achieved by moving the position of the pivot point closer to the tips. I had assumed that this was how it was done but you are the first person to confirm my hypothesis. Nice one!
Great review. I have the 7 inch set of those Channel Lock cutters at work and for a mechanic they are awesome. Really good price and they cut things like cotter pins and wiring like it's nothing. Was not surprised to learn they make a lot of the pliers being sold on the tool trucks.
Their Linemans are amazing. I use them. They scored in the top on Project Farm tests too.
Watched this just before stopping at Menards on my lunch hour to get a new pair of side cuts. Went with Channel Locks this time. Great Timing Buck!

My channelllock pliers have been in use over at least 2 decades, my knipex high leverage cutters have so far survived 1 decade (i purchased them circa 2008). Both brands kick ass, you can reliably do your work; can't go wrong. I confess that I own ZERO products from NWS; however I own several tools from Hazet, Stahlwille, Gedore, Matador, Wiha, Felo, and Knipex- the fitment and durability of German-made tools rivals that of all my hyper-expensive Snap-on tools. Though Snap-on easily takes first place in terms of tools I abuse and put through the most demanding situations of car repair. I feel confident NWS is in that same echelon of "more than good enough to get a paycheck." It's hard to go wrong with either of these high-quality brands. I've made a lot of money using Channelock, as well as Knipex. Good review, thanks a bunch.

I've owned a few pairs of compound side cutters, both cheap ones (Kobalt) and expensive ones (Wiha) and my biggest complaint with them is there is too much "springyness" in the action due to the more complicated mechanism. Especially after you've used them for a bit, they have a really hard time cutting smaller things like pulling string, cat5/6, 22awg wire, zip ties, etc. And as your video showed, a good pair of high leverage 8" side cuts, be it Channellock, Klein, Knipex, etc. have similar if not the same cutting capacity.
Channellock all the way. I stopped messing around with other brands and have been replacing everything with Channellock. I still use some of my pre china Craftsman but those will also be phased out. 6 pairs and growing.
Best all around pliers/cutters I have used in the last 50 years. Utica was my first choice but years ago someone decided they needed my set more than I did, and with them no longer around Channellock is it.
I didnt realize nws/ irwin - all i can say is that im in love with my 8" nws vds diagonals. Best there is imo
Have you seen that Channellock has come out with the plier #E458. Its a center cut design and cuts even easier than the E338 you show in your video.

Diagonal cutters for softer stuff such as copper wires, the bolt cutters for bigger and harder stuff. Right tools for the right job will yield the best results... that and you can happily avoid big divots in your cutters.
I wonder why they call them diagonal cutters? They don't really cut on a diagonal they cut on the side so side cutters seems more descriptive.
I think it’s because it’s a “cutting plier” that has a diagonal jaw. I am not sure if this refers to the bigger recess part or the other side of double bevel cutting edge. I suppose it’s the cutting edge as well since you also have “flush cutting” pliers that trims the wire/fastener flush.
I am thinking that the compound nature of the irwin probably makes the cut over a longer period, I doubt they offer much mechanical advantage because of friction; but, I think the cut through seems smoother, where the channel locks kind of snap when they cut and the shock wave is felt more by your hand... pressure over time.
You ended the video by basically making it a battle between the Irwins & channel locks but never explained how the Knioex & Monsters compared.
So which one really cut the easiest with the least resistance?
Or better yet, If price was not a factor then which do you think would be the best for carry in a edc bag?

A good comparison video, I do like and use IRWIN tools ,but in this instance I would choose the CHANELLOCKS
The good thing about these is that they're not actually Irwin's, but rather the far more professional brand German "NWS" rebranded as Irwin. There are a small handful of Irwin tools that are also actually NWS--all of them are a fantastic way to get expensive tools for cheaper.

If you can open the jaws further (hypothetically reducing leverage) it gains leverage by getting the cutting material in closer to the fulcrum. This is why non compound tools like the channel locks can compete because you can’t get the material as close to the fulcrum in the Irwin’s

Irwin now has two different quality lines of hand tools. The clostest comparale diagoanl to the ChannelLoc is IRWIN VISE-GRIP® 2078308. It also has a more comfortable handle. The compound action diagonal is designed for someone who will be using it heavily. BTW, NONE of these are designed for cuitting steel rod. Yy\ou are misusing them.
The metal I've used in all these cutting tests is definitely not a high grade of carbon in the steel.
@mdlee52 I forgot what video I watched, but someone said that the paint on the (NWS) Irwin cutting pliers was effecting the cutting performance. I have all of those pliers, except the the Monster bolt cutters and the Channellock brand E-338. I do have the Klein 8 inch D2000-48 angled cutting pliers, and also own the Knipex 10 inch and 8 inch High Leverage Diagonal Cutters.
Another great video brother, keep making more of them. And yes I am also biased when it comes to Channellock.

love my Knipex 10-Inch High Leverage Diagonal Cutters! Out of the package my channellocks were great but over time they dulled faster then my knipex .

Unfortunately there are no real reviews on cutters when it comes to the tool steel and hardening and how it pays off in the cutting process. In that regard I'd think Knipex would be the way to go where you would probably see better edge holding and cutting ability over time.
At the end of the day it's all about using the right tool for the job.
With the work I do I need to trim MC cable on the fly a lot and it's quicker for me to use cutters that can open wide enough to cut armored cable than switch to linemans. If they can also cut grid wire, bolts, jack chains, etc without dulling too much to cut armored cable easily then it's a winner and most all similar popular brand cutters can do this about the same. The Knipex here won't work so well in that but it would be great at cutting hard wire, bolts, and nails over a lifetime and with little effort. I have a pair of southwire cutters I've used for a couple years now that have worked as well as any other dykes in the same weight class but recently have been showing a little wear in the edges. Still, they perform much better than a similar priced pair Knipex 8 inch cutters I have which just don't quite have the leverage. I'm going to buy some Channel Lock high leverage cutters off amazon cause it's under $20 on amazon right now.
I have both the NWS and the Channellocks. In all honesty, I don't think their performance is comparable. For example, the NWS cuts through guitar strings with significantly more ease. Depending on the string, the Channellocks (two-handed) mostly puts a big dent into the material. Obviously, much depends on the application. 12awg stranded is like cutting a marshmallow - easy. Other wire, not so much. FWIW, I also have the Knipex dikes. Close to NWS, but doesn't cut with as much ease. And, once again, the Channellocks are not in the same league. BTW, though I paid $10 for the NWS on an Amazon algorithm error, I think they're worth the usual asking price. Interesting video. Thank you for taking the time.

Those irwin's are even harder to find now! I want the kiwi style ones, excesstools has a complete set of irwin pliers for $182.
Bought my Irwin 8" diagonal cutter from Lowes. Worked so great, that i threw out my brand newish Craftsmans. Enough said..!

I was thinking to buy the knipex because the marketing and I need something to cut very strong cable or wire. But are u saying Irwin is better than Knipex ?
In terms of overall capacity, I think they would be comparable.
Occasionally I have to cut a drywall screw, I can't find a tool that will cut it without ruining the jaw. Do either one of these cut a drywall screw without damage?

For me Knipex, why?
Never seen insulated Channellock*, they're good in cutting but here in Europe all electricians use insulated tools. That's btw. the reason Klein introduced it's new EINS-series (electricians insulated). They want to come over to the european market.
The price for the insulated NWS with VDE certification is ridiculous. Even here in Germany. It's round about 40€ (49 $), the 8" Knipex insulated diagonal cutters are 30€ (36 $), and it's the chrome plated version.
*I've seen they once made insulated tools for some time, I think between 1998 and 2007. The grips were made by Cementex. But they're too beefy. Here we use the style of grip which is comparable in thickness to Channellock Code Blue or Klein Journeyman, but they're insulated and every individual tool is tested (insulation test in a water tank with 10,000 V).

I think you are not comparing apple to apple. The Knipex and Monster are NOT diagonal cutting pliers, they are called cobolt and bolt cutter respectively. Knipex diagonal cutting plier begin with part number 70, for example 70 06 180 for the 180 mm length. Diagonal cutter has the blades diagonally positioned to the handle. Might increase our understanding.

You said you're biased yourself. I have the same Irwins that you have. I also have channel lock tool's. (Great tool's by the way). From my experience the Irwin or the original German NWS are better at cutting morr solid wire. I can't say the channel locks are no good because i have em. They're great, but NWS are great tools.

All that is mild steel you are cutting you wont see a difference until you start cutting enconel and monel and enconel 500, al6xn super stainless or hastaloy welding wire. you wont cut it with regular wire cutters we use those knipex you have there. if you cut with those channel locks 2 days and they look like wire stripers and your hand and leg is going to be killing you we used 9 in linemans plyers for years until those mini bolt cutters came out most guys aren't going to be cutting exotic welding wire .but if you do you will have a pair of knipex cutters

I have a set of I got at tractor supply. I wanna say there nkp brand or something. They cut 5/32 stainless filler rod with ease. Hardest or thickest rod I've cut. Don't have any inconel or other exotics laying around.

It seems you're taking the channellocks and irwins and judging them on unfair terms, seeing its a misuse for both tools. This test would be more suited for a bolt cutters.... They are really only for cutting electrical wire not that thicker gauge of wire. But this clearly demonstrates the channellocks ability.
I'm trying to find the limits. Both tools handled all of the wire without a problem. I think both pliers have a rated capacity of about .12 inches in hard wire, but are capable of handling more.

No, no reinforced wire that goes in to the platou of a building construction , first u lay it down then pour concrete! Idk if the correct expresion is reinforced wire. But anyway I was alway struggling with that type of wire when i was bulding a house and I was using some b ig ass long hevy duty two hand cutting tool and it was always a struggle, so It would be awesom if either one of these small ones could do it but i doubt it :P thanks for the reply. all the best

With all due respect, you tried to make the test, Seem "Scientific" by measuring diameters of all Soft Wires, with your Verniers Caliper, and I was interested in a testing of items more like Spring-Steel, Wirecutters 😃 Also, with a good Caliper, it takes No more effort to give metric measurements as well 😃
Holy crap those Irwin knockoffs of the NWS 2/4/ 23 cost $109. The actual one they are copying only cost $42. Irwin must be moving more drugs than I am to command that type of price with an inferior copycat pair of pliers

Are the channel locks that stupid 'knife and anvil' design or are there blades on both sides???
I have the smaller channel lock cutters with the 'knife and anvil' design and they suck! They have a hard time cutting plastic zip ties because one side is flat when it should be sharp.

You are saying Nipex so you are wary near, you only have to include the K as in Knipex. In English the K as in knee, know are hidden, but in German you say all the letters in Knipex. :-)

Why do folks compare bolt cutters to normal side cutters? Its not the same tool....
Well, probably because they're very similar tools. If you were going to carry one pair or the other, which would it be and why? I think that all kind of goes into the overall question. Speaking for myself, I would like a pair of side cutters that had extended capabilities approaching that of mini bolt cutters. You understand where I'm coming from?
mdlee52 I can understand that. I have always just used the tools for which they were fully intended. But I also rarely use a pouch. I roll a Chicago Case Company box that has enough space for all the various tools I need. I as well roll Knipex, Wiha, Wera, Stabila tools. The Germans know how to do it right.
I've got a lot of respect for the German tools that I own. You're right, they definitely know how to do it right.
