    Essentially: every German, Japanese, or Italian car company played a major role in manufacturing military vehicles for the Axis powers. Mitsubishi made the infamous Zero fighter line, Ferrari and Fiat both made tanks for Mussolini, and Porsche made tanks
    Update: while Ferrari, the car manufacturer we know today, hadn’t existed yet at the time, the later founder Enzo Ferrari DID own a factory that aided in the general production of military armaments until it was bombed by the Allies, leading him to move his business to Modena where Ferrari would be born post-war

    Before WW2, Germans could save up for a Volkswagen by purchasing special savings stamps to be put into a special book. After the requisite number of stamps had been collected, the book holder could take them to the VW Werk to be redeemed for a brand new car. Civilian car production being halted during the war and German victory being expected, workers continued collecting stamps when they could. There’s the story of one such stamps collector having his collection survive the war and, once civilian production restarted, presenting his completed collection to VW Werk and getting his car.

      A bit of Herbie (Love Bug) film and war history: The race track used for filming the final race in the movie "The Love Bug" was located in Sunnymead, CA (now called Moreno Valley, CA,) about 65 miles east of Los Angeles. The race track was only a few miles north of March Air Field: the air field in which the first P-38 Lightnings began test flights, as well as being the location of Bob Hope's very first USO Show. The race track was demolished in late 1991/ early '92, and was replaced with an indoor shopping mall. Fyi: the same race track was used for an episode of "Knight Rider."

    The failure of the new Beetle was that the only resemblance to the original Beetle was the shape. People fell in love with the original due to its simplicity, not its iconic shape. Once new Beetles' owners realized it wasn't the old car brought back, it failed.

    • @meganoobbg3387
      @meganoobbg3387 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Basically a Golf with a different skin is all. The new Mini is also basically a BMW, but for whamen (BMW priced parts). The Chevrolet HRV and Chrysler PT Cruiser were also missed opportunities - atleast in my opinion the cars do look good, but when since the mechanical stuff was unreliable they were a disaster.

    • @quillmaurer6563
      @quillmaurer6563 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it sold well initially as a novelty, people who wanted a Beetle-looking car (even though it didn't really look that much like the original either) but not the hassles of maintaining a classic car. The novelty wore off quickly though, and aside from novelty value it was inferior to the Golf in all regards, so people lost interest. As an owner of a classic one, I feel like the venn diagram of classic Beetle owners and New Beetle owners are two separate circles with no overlap. Beetles in their time served as a basic, cheap, simple, reliable car. Original Beetles in present day serve as an enthusiast's project that is still practical enough to use as regular transportation. The New Beetle served - briefly - as a novelty for people who liked the aesthetic of the original Beetle and the cultural association of it with Hippies and "flower power" and so on.

      The funny thing is it’s design is incredible in snow. I have a 2014 bug and live in mountains. It’s round body sheds snow like no other car. I blast past subarus and trucks in snow. It’s design is incredible in storage space as well. I have owned 20 cars and this is my favorite I’ve ever had
      They didn’t touch on it but the soviets designed the beetle, the Germans stole the design.
