Lotus' Eletre SUV is a sign the company is growing up

- Lotus has big new corporate parents with a big corporate budget, and now the company has a big SUV to match. It's called the Eletre and, with a curb weight in excess of 5,500 pounds, it's unlike any Lotus that's ever come before. Yes, it's quick and it's fun, but it's also overshadowed by other SUVs that are quicker or more luxurious. It's a remarkable first attempt from Lotus, but at the end of the day it's hard to know who it's really for.

Clearly this reviewer had a prejudice for this car. Calling this car slow is exaggerated, 0-60 in 2,95 sec. This car is full of good stuff that he didn’t even mention. It goes in to the corners much better than any other SUV (electric or not). I’ve seen it in real and it’s gorgeous. It’s built quality is above any Tesla, and above the Mercedes EQS. And concerning the navigation, you do have a 29 inches headup display with augmented reality for the navigation. It also has much options that Tesla doesn’t have: anti roll bars, rear wheels steering, head up display, 23 inches wheels, carbon ceramic breaks, massage seating, 2180 watt surround system, intelligent transparent roof… and the list goes on… Maybe this reviewer is paid by Tesla, or maybe he wants to convince us that the American Tesla is better than the British/Chinese Lotus.
The presenter seems to have made the error of not taking into account that UK prices include 20% VAT. The base model starts at £90K, so that's 0.8 (exclude VAT) * 1.28 ($/£) * 90K = $92K. That makes it a good competitor for cars like the Audi Q8 e-tron or BMW iX and much cheaper than the Tesla Model X and MB EQS SUV.
The Emira First Edition costs £75,995 in the UK. That's $97,477 by simple currency conversion. The price of a First Edition Emira in the US is? $105,000. Export costs more than make up for VAT.
Definitely the best looking Electric vehicle I've seen
"Feels slower..." 😂😂 this car does 0-60 in 2.9 sec
Well that is slower than my American minivan ("with doors that go up like this")
hes driving the 600hp version, which is 4.2s which isnt extremely fast
It's weird how ready not to like this car people are.
why the volume is so low ?
Pleasantly surprised to see this is a Tim Stevens video. Nothing against the other usual guy, but he's no Tim. I hope this is the start of Tim taking over all car videos on Engadet.
Great to see, Tim Stevens back @ Engadget. 👍👍
And great to be back!
It looks great.
Why did they send the world's least stylish individual to review a very stylish car, he'd be a lot more comfortable reviewing a fridge, or a brick or something. Why did that guy even bother? This is why no one watches engadget. No subscribe, no like.
Beautiful car
Typical American review😂, comparing it to a Model 3 Performance instead of a Model X which is it’s true competitor.
Less than a year ago they promised 2000 kg. Today, it turns out to be 2600+ kg.
Did something change, or did they just LIE to get pre-orders?
Topgear states 2520kg for S version which is less than Tesla X 2540+kg according to topgear article. Considering Electra is massive, it's a class leading weight for E segment SUV
@@protagonist9716 Bjorn Nyland got 2720 kg on a weigh bridge with just himself and regular camera gear on board. Same Top Gear probably had it at 2000 kg until very recently. No number do brands lie about as much as their weight.
The 2520kg is the basic S version without any additional options. Even this basic version contains more options than a Model X. Now the one Bjorn was driving was a full optioned car, and he was inside with all his stuff, so it’s normal that it weights more.
@@msm4445 Bjorn plus stuff can't be more than 120 kg. Anyway, Lotus were not in the business of being honest there. 2000kg would have taken an effort they were not even considering to put into it.
@@Cloxxki I was not talking about the promised 2000 kg, but about the declared 2520 kg. So the weight difference is justified by the presence of Bjorn, his stuff and the extra options in the car. And yes it’s true that Lotus couldn’t keep their promise of making the suv less than 2000kg
🙌🏻
Not having psydical buttons is going to be an accessibility issue.
It looks gorgeous but that price is insane. I'm also weary of all the screens, cameras, and other tech. If something goes wrong, it's going to be crazy expensive to fix it.
I love the honesty of this guy--clearly, this car does not have what it takes to compete with other, more powerful EVs.
It’s not a final build, thus taking the review with a pinch of salt
Pretty much all other reviews disagree with this sentence
You really get the impression that the presenter had been through something very unpleasant just before recording this show. I agree with the interesting and disparaging remarks he makes, and it would be nice if Lotus would get off its butt and improve on its little shortcomings, but the fact that this tiny company, bolstered by Chinese capital, puts so much effort into making such an exceptional vehicle is not at all properly recognized... I find this journalist's work autistic, focusing on relatively unimportant details (not being able to adjust the sound of the KEF audio system is infuriating and pretentious, I agree) and not at all talking about the vehicle in a holistic approach.
This guy says more negatives than anything! Talks more of spartan Tesla . Terrible initial review!😫
Toyota crown is that you ?
What are you talking about!! They have nothing to share these two cars
They lost me at $100k+
Same here!
Funny, it’s like Lamborghini Revualto lost me at $600k+, I’ve expected $50k for this super car with hypercar capabilities
S/o to America and our obnoxious safety standards. Made the car less cool with those mirrors
Who will buy this?
Me 😀
I like this guy a lot, he’s got the knowledge and the demeanour.
Always a fan of Lotus but think there wasting there time with a 4x4 - money and time! Focus on a small compact sportscar with great range, non of these mangement vanity projects.
They will never survive if they follow your advice… they need money and SUVs are the most sold cars nowadays.
@@msm4445 there a sports car company and simply can't compete on all levels. That SUV looks great but its never going to match the competion and will only ever be for super rich, who have other options.
@@MadBrit26 it’s not more expensive than a Porsche Cayenne or a range rover sport. Much less expensive than a Urus, thought much faster and better to drive apparently. So it does have it’s clients
It’s amazing to think that Elon Musk and Tesla forced the entire industry to change.
And subsequently make much better vehicles. Much like his social media shenanigans. S/o to Elon
It's other billionaires as well. And it's not just about going EV. And you might be wrong to think anyone make the world better. It's for their personal agendas more so than a better Earth by your standards. Many find billioniare talking poin ts attrctive though, and they forego the freedom to research the other side of the argument. All hail the billionaires and the politicians that suck up to them!
Not a bad looking car, but I see a bunch of parts that are going to break and require expensive replacement. 🤔
Worst idea to use Unreal Engine for the OS!
No, thank you. Lotus and SUV are mutually exclusive terms.
Thanks, I hate it.
No seriously, what about this thing makes it a "Lotus"? Who is it for? Rich idiots who only know Lotus as a generic car name?
This doesn't appeal to Lotus fans, it doesn't seem particularly well suited to the typical luxury SUV driver.
It’s as much a Lotus as the Urus is a Lamborghini and the Purosangue is a Ferrari.
@@jaycorbinagreed the Eletre is beautiful
@@jaycorbin This is such a weird argument, those two cars coulnd't be more different as they relate to their brands.
The Purosangue is arguably a proper Ferrari in SUV form. It has a V12, super-sharp handling with active suspecnsion, and is arguably the modern incarnation of a grand tourer, somthing that has been part of Ferrari since the beginning.
The Urus is a twin-turbo V8 that, while being a fine luxury GT SUV, has very little to do with Lamborghini other than the branding. It's a VW platform SUV with a special engine, and it's so far removed from anything remotely "Lamborghini" that it seems like an obvious cash-grab.
The Eletre lines up nicely alongside the Urus: it's not a bad car, but it is a bad Lotus.
@@thewilliamjrful Nobody is saying it's ugly. I'm saying it's a bad Lotus. Nothing about this car says "Lotus" other than the looks.
@@SpencerN.C. If you think Grand Tourers were SUVs, then you really need to open a car history book.
Interior Dash board too Small (Little) displays, and over priced
You don’t even need it, because the car has a 29 inches headup display with augmented reality navigation (which this journalist visibly doesn’t know about it). The thing is that this car doesn’t have the final software version.
