Hugely underrated part of why Jokic is such a good pick up is that he's a zero drama superstar. This dude is not gonna split your locker room. Hes not gonna have contract drama. He's not gonna put in a b s trade request
Its an underrated trait but there are also few elite players who are legit franchise pillars that are 'easier' to build a team around. Especially when their game would age very well.
I remind ppl all the time how hyped KAT was back in the day. How some were even saying he was the next Tim Duncan. Ppl be thinking im lying, but them old polls don't lie.
@tylerholt6828 Sure things could be different but would he still exhibit better character as a leader? I think his run with the Wolves has shown he's peaked as a number 2 guy with a very unique skillset. That just means the number 1 going to be around him has to be elite and the roster has to get around KATs weaknesses.
@tylerholt6828 I seriously doubt it. Those numbers are inflated by his regular season stats. But in the playoffs he shrinks, makes dumb decisions and routinely gets himself in foul trouble. Ant at 5 is just silly. The way people act like its inevitable he'll be a top 5 player in the league is mind boggling. I'm not saying he won't be great, but it's far from a certainty. SGA would be a much better pick if you want a guard/ball handler to start your team with given he's already a first team All-NBA.
Yeah, I was thinking I'd definitely take SGA over Ant. And seems like the list should be, in some order: Jokic, Giannis, Tatum, and Luka at the top-4. Whomever you want at 5, if you're going with a dumb pick like Wemby or a proven top player like SGA, I don't see how Ant cracks that.
I love SGA and having a guy like Josh Giddey to share primary ball handling and playmaking duties is a huge advantage. The only concern with those two as a combo guard backcourt is obviously shooting. They don't need to be great shooters but I feel like they do need to get to league average on about 5 attempts per game each. When primary ball handlers are shooting challenged it warps the court geometry in a way that makes getting to the basket or dishing to an open man more challenging. This dynamic is exacerbated in the playoffs against locked in game planned D.
I chat on a timberwolves chat as a wolves fan and i get into debates all the time that Shai is quite a bit better than Ant. And no one agrees with me ever. Dude just had mvp votes and averaged over 31 ppg. He is in elite company. While Ant is really good. Even in playoffs. Ant is still a far cry from Shai and still theory. Shai plays like Kobe out there in the mid range. Yes i know he is older but Ant is still theory. That is where Wolves fans dream Ant can get to. And may. But may not. I am totally fine with him peaking where he was last season. It is still awesome and way better than being a bum or bust at #1 pick. And he shows out for playoffs. That is really all i ask. Anything else is gravy. And they all argue like homers. It is absurd.
@@WheresWaldo05 A very well thought out comment. It's easy to extrapolate what Ant could possibly become because we've seen hyper athletic shooting/scoring guards in pretty much every era of the league. Added to which his phenotype is eerily similar to Dwyane Wade. Shai is a completely different animal in terms of how he goes about breaking down defenders off the dribble. His herky jerky style is not something we've really seen before, at least not to the degree of success that Shai has achieved. Shai is a handful for even the most elite wing defenders because they're never totally sure how to go about locking him down. It's like they don't know how to go about processing the visual information from one dribble to the next. Also Shai will shoot threes but only as kind of an afterthought whereas Ant shoots threes at a pretty high volume. Shai is also a far better defender than Ant is at this point. Ant could very well be an excellent defender but it's theoretical at this point. Bottom line is Ant has a great chance to be a superstar and Shai is unequivocally one right now. It's a shame the TWolves made one of the worst trades in sports history and the odds of him staying in Minnesota for his whole career grow longer every day.
One of the best things about being a sports fan are these kinds of conversations. If given a choice of who I'd start my franchise with I'd go Jokic, Wemby, Giannis. I realize that I can't defend Wemby over Giannis in any rational way but the idea of what Wemby could be is so intriguing to me that I would take that risk. A 7'5" guy with the fluidity of a wing and an array of skills that you would never attempt in 2k create a player because that would be absurd.
@@k_hack9441 I love Giannis. He may have the best story of any pro athlete ever. Also he's as dominant on D as he is offensively. I agree he is the most logical, rationale, choice after Jokic. The idea of Wemby being a 7'5" Kevin Durant and also the best defensive player in the league both of which are very much on the table is worth the gamble.
@@Bewbscueseryou nailed it, I think the best comp so far for Wemby is Kevin Durant. So yeah we’re talking about a 7’5 Kevin Durant. For all his physical gifts Giannis can’t shoot or score like KD can, and Wemby has the potential to be an even better defender than Giannis.
@@gnomechomsky2524 incorrect. KD getting swept by BOSTON with a FULLY HEALTHY KYRIE while Giannis SET RECORDS AND PUSHED THEM TO 7 without Middleton should have disabused people of this notion.
if you can’t vote for your own player, then the guy voting for Embiid is probably the Nuggets GM. Like if he personally was building the team again and couldn’t pick Jokic, he’d probably want to pick the next most dominant center and try to work around that.
Embiid has avoided criticism for his body of work in the playoffs because Simmons and Harden have absorbed all the shrapnel. Embiid has under performed his regular season numbers in every playoff he's been a part of. Embiid defenders can point to seemingly valid reasons in each playoffs for Embiids performance but MVP type players with the pedigree to be the best player on a championship team find ways to elevate their team. Embiid is not on that level. If he's going to get a title it'll be as the second banana.
@@Bewbscueseras a Embiid apologist I completely agree, he's really shot himself and his team in the foot with his playoff "prowess" and if his press conferences echo his leadership it's no wonder why they have as much talent as they do and continue to disappoint
If I’m a GM you want to start a franchise with a guy who has had moments and competed in them - Giannis and Joker check the boxes - Embid has never 👎🏾 it’s pretty simple - so Wemby as good as he may be but I’m not voting for an unknown guy
And Luka and Tatum are right there with them, IMO; haven't won a championship but younger. Those 4 seem like the ought to be the obvious top-4, in whatever order, right?
Luka was totally disrespected in that “who would you rather start your team with” poll. His career trajectory so far is on-par with LeBron James at the same age 24-25 (LeBron came into the league a year younger). It seems like Luka is being punished because his management has given him a shitty squad. LBJ didn’t win a chip till he was 29 or so. Luka has 4-5 years. If we’re judging on talent and potential there’s no way he’s lower than 3
I could see him at 5. Wemby ahead of him is insane, but he got 23% of the vote, so... *shrug* Jokic, Giannis, Tatum, Luka seems fair. Tatum has obviously been surrounded by better teammates, probably better coaching, but if you want to argue for the defense and the more manageable usage rate, plus he's won in the playoffs so much more, had his own handful of signature games... I assume I don't have to explain Jokic and Giannis ahead of Luka.
Luka has a much worse attitude than LeBron did at that age. Unsurprisingly, that does play a role in polls when GMs are asked to pick who they want to work with the most.
The only reason i can see why wembanyama would be second is because you can see all the potential with him that as a GM, they most likely are thinking "imagine the way i could develop this kid"
"The Devil's Advocate Argument" is that when Jokic won his first MVP it was instead of giving it to Giannis for the third time in a row. Giannis then won a championship and everyone second guessed giving the MVP to Jokic. Seems silly now though doesn't it? Everybody wants to say Jokic should have three when he shouldn't have gotten the first one.
Yeah, it's like people think only blocks count for big man defense. Hassan Whiteside had tons of blocks, but was a shitty defender. In fact, chasing blocks can be like gambling on steals, and make you a worse defender. Who was the better big man defender, Dwight Howard or Tim Duncan? Dwight had those highlight reel swats, and Duncan didn't always jump off the screen like that. They are both great defenders, but Duncan wasn't soaring through the air to contest.
@@shorewall 100% agreed. AD was going hard at the DPOY Jackson but was never once bullying Jokic in the WCF. Jokic is also extremely good in the pick and roll and getting guys away from their spots, whereas Boston was putting embiid in the pick and roll the whole game. No doubt also that racism plays a role in how casuals view Jokic defensively, it's sad, but a reality of this world.
Its overrated now when the offense finds ways to draw out the opposing big via screens or mismatches in some cases. Casuals easily miss this and always go for the raw bpg number. But in games if that big can't navigate through screens or play the drop, they are toast. In some cases the big already made it a poor proposition for themselves being out of position. Then inviting needless help which then is just easy pickings for the ball handler get the ball outside or with the big who screened that is either rolling or outside waiting to shoot.
@@t4d0W Completely agreed. This is where embiid was completely exposed and where Jokic was holding his own. All we can do is know basketball and let the evidence show for itself.
Embiid footwork is way too slow to be an impactful playoffs performer. Also his defense is vastly overrated since he can't chase down most guards 1 on 1. I think he is not a top 5 player and barely top 10 right now
Took me a second to notice what you were referring to. But yes. I agree. I did notice it subconsciously and now that I really see it it's especially annoying.
I do numbers of a living. Prediction algorithms in sports are biased by individual stats. Their blind spot is a team needs to play well TOGETHER to excel: an algorithm can't know that and is pretty poor at predicting it from things like assist rate. The Celts came up short on that. Who knows whether getting rid of Smart to change the culture will change that. (My guess - only a guess - is that it will. Smart was not a strong point, he would occasionally go hero ball, and he'd flop and get into it with the refs, which could also spread to his teammates. Jrue is older and probably not as good on either side of the ball, but I'm betting he changes the culture for the better because that's who he is. If the Jays get into it with refs Jrue will get them on track.)
@@WheresWaldo05 Meh. We can debate. But I see the Smart-Jrue comparison as the classic empty calories vs. real heft. That's probably a little harsh on Smart. By counting stats Smart is "better." And yet I am 100% certain Jrue is a guy who will make his whole team better. True NBA fans know these guys when we see them. (And I think counting stats are frequently misleading.)

im a nuggets fan and my only worry with jokic is that he feels like he's accomplished everything at this point. 2 mvps, a ring, and a finals mvp. he's made a ton of money. maybe he retires after this current contract? also i think if denver runs into golden state in the playoffs jokic's kryptonite(steph curry) will be brought to bare and everyone is gonna freak out again saying last year was a fluke even though i think there's really only one team in the league who is just an awful matchup for denver and it shouldn't take anything away from jokic's greatness and what he's accomplished.
As a Warriors fan, I seriously doubt anyone will call last year's champion a fluke. Best record in the regular season and dominant run in the playoffs. Congrats on a well deserved chip.
@@MrPhilbautista i appreciate that and im with you but ive already seen people calling it a fluke saying we only beat 8 seeds and play-in teams which is honestly such a casual b.s. take
@@Jsch23 Yup. The Heat knocked out the East top seed Bucks. They were in the ECF last year and made it to the Finals in 2020. They were a solid team for the past half decade and their Finals stint isn't a fluke. The Lakers won the chip in 2020 behind Bron and AD, who were both healthy this year and good enough to get to the WCF. All championships are hard earned and well deserved. No asterisks.
And he deserved it. An easy western path, health, and playoff Jamal Murray made the difference. Jokic is not as good as Giannis. At least with Embiid, Jokic is so much more healthy.
@@WheresWaldo05 he’s not. Passing is not more important than defense. Jokic had the easiest path to a title in 20 yrs and sidekick who played like Michael Jordan. It was a perfect storm.
What you all continue to miss about Embiid is his negative leadership ability. He is a team chemistry killer. In 2021 when the media was coming down on Embiid after some poor performances, Ben defended Joel and sat next to him on the press conference while doing it. Joel later in the playoffs completely trashes Ben and alienates him. Do you all seriously not see the problem here? Jokic has no problem encouraging Facundo Campazzo, PJ Dozier, and Austin Rivers to shoot the ball and make plays. Embiid on the other hand throws his teammates under the bus. He messed up against the Heat in 2022 and blamed Harden. He messed up again against the Celtics in 2023 and blames the play calls and the rest of the team. Leadership is an attribute that everyone in the mainstream media doesn't understand. It's evident in ESPNs rank again. How are LeBron and Jimmy behind KD and Embiid? It's a 5 on 5 game, chemistry matters just as much as talent.
I think one big problem either of those teams are gonna have is when he asks out Philly is gonna be hesitant to trade him to another Easter conference team. Usually when stuff like that happens they try to send them to the other conference so their own team doesn’t have to compete against him much if it goes bad and he instantly makes that new team contenders and they go on a title run. And another issue is what they’ll have to give up to get him. Philly just got burned by Simmons and then harden so they’re gonna want the farm for embiid. It’ll be hard to trade for him and keep your current team intact. I guarantee Philly would ask for 3-4 first round picks rj barret, Julius randle and maybe 1 more guy which is a ton
I wonder if the person who voted embiid was the GM for the nuggets. Since he can't vote for oak ridge, and they just swept the lakers, he thought just giving it to the MVP was the correct decision.
Building a team for me is not the best player atm but someone who could win and still very young. Jokic is not old at 28, but not a young player. Luka is still under 25 and could win multiple titles, so I think he is the correct answer. I'm surprised Lakers chances are so low; they have a deeper team than last year and if 2 main guys are healthy, they could do it. Don't get it why Phoenix is so high. Try to stop anyone scoring if KD, Booker, Beal and Nurkic are in your starting 5.
I take Embiid over Joker because I value defense more than playmaking from the Center position…They both can score and rebound, so it all depends if you prefer better playmaking or defense in comparing the two IMHO
nah it more depends if you want to play and win the finals - with someone not avaible sometimes because of health sometimes because of fear if you are really honest^^
It’s not really even close, Jokic is a maestro of basketball and so unique. He’s already a legend and his defense is good enough, the guy will be an all time great. Embiid won’t be in the conversation, more of a Patrick Ewing, very good but not a legend.
As a Philly fan living in Denver (born in Philly, moved to the midwest) I just wanted to see Embiid win the MVP at some point, and it was super frustrating to see him come up 2nd fiddle every time. As being completely honest we are never winning a championship with our ownership group. Ever since Hinkie was removed we've had garbage ownership / management (why did we give up Jimmy to keep Tobias, Markelle Fultz forgetting how to shoot, Ben Simmons drama, Harden drama...). Now that he got the MVP I could care less, I feel like I'm good with whatever happens now. I just wanted to see Embiid get something in his career in Philly, and unfortunately we'll never get past the second round with our ownership and management. I love Jokic game, I'm just super salty every time I go to a nugs game Denver decides to lose lol. Embiid is more fun to watch in games for sure - as he's more emotive. Some of the regular season nugs games make it very clear that it's the regular season and no one cares.. which sucks as a fan at the game. Like please don't lose to the raptors again at home (end rant lol), atleast show some emotion when the games close!
Definitely not a NBA guy but Im a huge MLB guy and through that lens having Wemby 2nd makes total sense. 5 years of prime performance is a HUGE deal even if Jokic doesnt decline *that* much. To use a baseball comparison its like saying you would rather start your team with Corbin Carrol or Bobby Witt Jr over Ohtani. Ohtani is a stud and probaly still will be in 5 years, but CC and BWJ are going to be studs for the probably decade.
Yeah even if you're Calvin Booth, I'm probably still taking AD over Embiid as the second best center. Last postseason he was wildly inconsistent and still better than Embiid has ever been.
And then stretches to what age? 33-35? Or I guess it depends cus some players have short like 3-4 year primes while others have a 6-9 year prime. Some fall off hard past 35 then some don’t and are still 80-90% of what they were for a couple more years
To be fair Steph was a good pick, now he looks past his best but if the question is starting a franchise I think the implication is they are young? Lebron and Steph aren't throw away. Granted Embiid is iffy. May as well pick Harden if you don't want to win anything.
you should make that comment about wemby beeing good^^ thats the part we dont know^^ the captain obvious part is because everybody acts as if its s done deal - damn there are people talking about championships

Russillo is an absolute boss. Gotta love him
One of the best things about being a sports fan are these kinds of conversations.
He won’t be as injury fee as Giannis has been. Gianni’s is the pick.
@@gnomechomsky2524 I can't wait for the season to start! So many great storylines.
@@gnomechomsky2524 incorrect. Giannis can't SHOOT like KD can, but he's OUTSCORED HIM for the past SIX YEARS by EVERY SINGLE METRIC YOU'D WANT TO USE:
TOTAL POINTS
PPG
POINTS PER MINUTE

CLUTCH POINTS
kd has such a BEAUTIFUL GAME people have confused that with EFFECTIVENESS.
Couldn't disagree with this more. If he couldn't have Jokic, im not sure why he'd tunnel vision with big men just cause he had success with one
Definitely wouldn't be the Nuggets GM. You can see by the players he's brought in and drafted that he wants players that are reliable and selfless.
@@Bewbscueseras a Embiid apologist I completely agree, he's really shot himself and his team in the foot with his playoff "prowess" and if his press conferences echo his leadership it's no wonder why they have as much talent as they do and continue to disappoint
... wut?
I am quite sure the Knicks GM voted for Embiid for some proper grooming.
If I’m a GM you want to start a franchise with a guy who has had moments and competed in them - Giannis and Joker check the boxes - Embid has never 👎🏾 it’s pretty simple - so Wemby as good as he may be but I’m not voting for an unknown guy
His ceiling's been projected as high as Gen Z Kareem, so I could see the allure of the potential.
And Luka and Tatum are right there with them, IMO; haven't won a championship but younger. Those 4 seem like the ought to be the obvious top-4, in whatever order, right?
Love the new background Ryen
Luka was totally disrespected in that “who would you rather start your team with” poll. His career trajectory so far is on-par with LeBron James at the same age 24-25 (LeBron came into the league a year younger). It seems like Luka is being punished because his management has given him a shitty squad. LBJ didn’t win a chip till he was 29 or so. Luka has 4-5 years. If we’re judging on talent and potential there’s no way he’s lower than 3
I could see him at 5. Wemby ahead of him is insane, but he got 23% of the vote, so... *shrug*
Jokic, Giannis, Tatum, Luka seems fair.
He just needs to meet Lebron's pharmacists and he's gonna take the next step. Sign with Klutch and get all those perks
The nba media just fickle, luka still on track. The mavs roster construction is trash tho.
Luka is being disrespected because he's fat and doesn't stop complaining. It's the same reason I'm disrespected so much.
Luka has a much worse attitude than LeBron did at that age. Unsurprisingly, that does play a role in polls when GMs are asked to pick who they want to work with the most.
Nice backdrop, enhances the aesthetic quality of the video
The only reason i can see why wembanyama would be second is because you can see all the potential with him that as a GM, they most likely are thinking "imagine the way i could develop this kid"
"The Devil's Advocate Argument" is that when Jokic won his first MVP it was instead of giving it to Giannis for the third time in a row. Giannis then won a championship and everyone second guessed giving the MVP to Jokic. Seems silly now though doesn't it? Everybody wants to say Jokic should have three when he shouldn't have gotten the first one.
💯
He was better than Giannis that year by quite a bit.
I dont think the GM's or whoever fills out those polls put that much thought into their answers
Jokic is a much better defender than embiid. Rim protection is overrated.
Embiid got a vote? he'd be my who do you trade away to start a franchise vote.
Embiid footwork is way too slow to be an impactful playoffs performer. Also his defense is vastly overrated since he can't chase down most guards 1 on 1. I think he is not a top 5 player and barely top 10 right now
to whoever edits these - the moving background effect is really distracting. sick water front views though
Took me a second to notice what you were referring to. But yes. I agree. I did notice it subconsciously and now that I really see it it's especially annoying.
The Steph disrespect is wild... i wouldn't have expected him to get a pick any of the last few years, but 0 in 15 and 16...? Wow.
Everything you said us common knowledge. Acting like these are some amazing insights that you've gleaned from your occupation is cringey. "I do numbers of a living," lol. Yes, a lot of people do (well, "for" a living). It doesn't make your opinion any more insightful or intelligent.

totally agree! as a warriors fan I would prefeer very much play Denver than the lakers in the last postseason. Just a better machup for us
As a Warriors fan, I seriously doubt anyone will call last year's champion a fluke.
Didn’t you and Bill vote Embid last year for MVP 😂
Not the same thing though, pretty obviously different actually
And he deserved it. An easy western path, health, and playoff Jamal Murray made the difference. Jokic is not as good as Giannis. At least with Embiid, Jokic is so much more healthy.
@@k_hack9441Right. Jokic is not as good as Giannis. He is better.
The one GM that voted for Embiid is someone who is waiting to pounce when he asks out. Which GM has the most incentive? Heat? Knicks? Someone else?
Luka should not be ahead of curry on any list unless it’s players under 30. Dude didn’t even make the playoffs with Irving
its not like the irving part makes your argument better - its more like irving was again the reason why his team under achieved
It must be a height and strength thing. Gms skew towards taller stronger players.
I mean... in the last five years, besides '22, all the Finals MVPs and regular season MVPs have been tall and/or strong players since then.
I wonder if the person who voted embiid was the GM for the nuggets. Since he can't vote for oak ridge, and they just swept the lakers, he thought just giving it to the MVP was the correct decision.
A GM votes for Embiid so Embiid gets his agent to find out who it was.
Jokic game can age through age 34 season i feel. Luka is a less team friendly game and harder to build around. I take Jokic.

It is the Knicks GM, trying to get in good with the Embiid camp.
Idk man. I feel like this could be the year they actually make a run. If you can get back some assets from Harden, Maxey takes a step and Obure.

Denver gm said that embiid was the best center and international player bc he can't vote for jokic
