The save from Zoff at 88:44 makes up for the near post mistake goal from Socrates. Probably the greatest WC game in history. Italy's greatest team ever. Rossi of course gets most of the credit, but the whole team was just pure class. For instance, Conti, Collovati, Oriale never get the same credit as Scirea, Tardelli, and Gentile. The whole team were 100% especially the last 4 or 5 games. They beat all the teams with the biggest stars at the time. And these weren't watered down tournaments like now. There were no easy games. And all the talk about catenaccio. I prefer this team to the horrible tactics Italy had in the next 4 or 5 world cups. So many great players who were never used properly and allowed to play. This "catenaccio" team from 82 scored a lot of beautiful goals.
Agree about this game being the greatest WC game ever. Agree about that talented Italian side scoring some beautiful goals. However... Paolo Rossi led Italy broke the hearts of millions of neutrals like me all over the world who were mesmerized by "Jogo Bonito" of the 1982 Selecao. Surely the best team in history to play the beautiful game in a beautiful way with Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Eder. Hated everything Italian in the next few WCs 😂
Italy were dreadful until the second half of the match against Argentina and although in this game they produced some quality moves that few other teams could, it was only because they had to. If it had been the other way round you would have seen ten blue shirts behind the ball. As it turned out there was very little to beat in Spain. All the major countries suffered with injuries or other problems and Brazil proved to have, not a team, but only a brilliant midfield.
As a Pole I can add Poland as a strong team with Boniek and Lato which Italy beat (of course it's sad that in semifinal Boniek didn't play because of yellow cards).
I liked the Argentina'78 Azurri side too. That was the first-ever World Cup I watched. I was 7. The Azurri actually beat the Argies in a group game then. In fact, Italy and Argentina met each other at every WC between 1978 and 1990. The semi-final in Naples in 1990 was the most dramatic encounter. It was the first goal that Zenga had conceded all tournament well into the second half but it proved the decisive one in a 1-1 draw followed by pens.
I was disappointed for Italy not to win in 1990 against Argentina. As a German supporter I was waiting for a great final and maybe revenge for 1982 but that horrible Argentina team somehow made it to the final and destroyed that match, too. Germany and Italy were the 2 best teams in 1990 with England very close behind.
Rossi talent had been known even in 1978 WC. Just that he strangely and unknowingly to himself he suddenly found his magic touch on this most challenging game to his life and national team even in Italian football history.

Looking back on it, Brazil in 1982 were not really a team - only a brilliant midfield - probably the best in World Cup history. To emphasise this point, in this match, Serginho and Eder were non-existent and their defence was cut apart nearly every time the Italians counter attacked. Of their four midfielders - Cerezo, Socrates, Zico and Falcao - Zico clearly did not like playing right up and being tightly marked by Gentile and little was seen of him. The other three though, especially in the second half were quite superb.
Sweet were the times. Solely by reading the various brands on the non-changeable commercial boards. JVC, Canon, Iveco, Metaxa, Gilette. That is pure nostalgia. Gosh, I miss those days.

Ma pensate veramente, che Paolo Rossi fosse un mostro, un "marziano"?! --- Il centravanti titolare dell'Italia era Roberto Bettega (n°9 vero, fortissimo) ma si ruppe i legamenti a novemvre 81, quindi Bearzot (ct Nazionale Italia) convoco' Selvaggi ( altro centravanti forte in quel momento) ed escluse INCREDIBILMENTE, Roberto Pruzzo, forse il piu' forte n°9 di quegli anni (sara' tre volte capocannoniere della serie A) che pero' non "brillava" con la maglia della nazionale; altri due centravanti convocati furono Graziani ed Altobelli, (un gregario ed un uomo d'area).... ultimo attaccante ad essere convocato fu Paolo Rossi che era tornato a giocare a fine aprile 1982, dopo aver scontato (ingiustamente) due anni di squalifica che ne avevano quasi distrutto l' UOMO, Paolo Rossi; depressione, menischi con l'artrosi, scomparsa della muscolatura e della condizione agonistica. Ma il "vecio" (Enzo Bearzot) gli aveva promesso che lo avrebbe portato con se, al mundial... e cosi' fu. Bearzot scelse, per il mundial argentino, un fronte d'attacco leggero: di astuzia rapidita' ed opportunismo (Rossi) e di movimento, sacrificio e supporto (Graziani). Paolo Rossi, le prime tre partite, era inguardabile, inesistente, completamente fuori dalla manovra, ritmi, schemi della squadra... non sfiorava neanche un pallone...un fantasma debole e in enorme difficolta'. Bearzot, aggiusto' la configurazione della sua squadra e sfrutto' al massimo i suo gruppo di uomini, traendo il massimo profitto. Una grande Italia, UMILE, concentrata, unita, determinata, equilibrata nei reparti, con spirito di sacrificio, comincio' a girare come un motore ben assemblato ed arrivarono i risultati. Comunque Rossi non era affatto una seconda scelta. Concordo con l'analisi di fondo, ma Rossi era l'attaccante più prolifico del suo tempo e Bettega ormai era nella fase calante. La stessa vicenda che colpì Rossi semmai impedì di convocare Bruno Giordano, che era il più talentuoso e che poteva sicuramente dare il suo. Pablito non era un fenomeno, siamo d'accordo, ma era il tipo d'attaccante opportunista che serviva per il momento. Esse jogo é a prova cabal que futebol não é só ataque, mas também defesa. Um time tem que aprender a jogar sem a bola. Essa seleção foi inspirada nos times dos anos 50 talvez, época que Telê jogava pelo Fluminense, talvez não tenha aprendido com o seu professor Zezé Moreira, o que era saber fechar e se defender. Itália venceu nos contra ataques, jogando nos nossos erros. O Telê dos anos 90, com a cabeça mais moderna, jamais perderia esse jogo.

@@dreadelectric7745 No, Reinaldo (from Atlético Mineiro) was as good as Careca, but he was injured too. Nunes (from Flamengo) was another great striker, however, he was also injured. Therefore Serginho (from São Paulo) was chosen as a striker.
When the score was tied 2-2 and Eder was going to score in the 70th minute, if he had passed the ball to his teammate, it would have been a 1-on-1 situation with the goalkeeper, but because of Eder's greed... It's still sad to see it again... Rossi's two goals were the result of a thoughtless pass from Cerezo and a header contest between teammates...

Después de su etapa de gloria semi-amateur de 1958-1970, Brasil básicamente no jugó al fútbol moderno. En 1994 decidió por fin modernizarse y adoptar las tácticas argentinas de Menotti-Bilardo y rodear a los habilidosos de obreros incansables; le sirvió y muy bien para llegar a otras dos finales, pero después de 2002 su esquema volvió a agotarse. No llegan a semifinales desde entonces y defraudan siempre. Arrancan el próximo mundial igualando a su periodo más largo sin títulos, 24 años, por lo que de no ganarlo será el mayor. Y andan buscando a Gallardo encima, la historia es circular.

Seleção capenga, só sabia atacar e não se defender, tinha defeitos crônicos apontados por especialistas isentos, não alguns pachecões. Lado direito tinha problemas, o time só sabia jogar com a bola, sem ela era nulo, goleiro não dava segurança, Serginho não tinha condições de ser titular, ainda sofremos com a ausência de Reinaldo e de Careca, incompreensível Dinamite não jogar. Time se iludiu com jogos antes da copa que nada valiam. Veja; pegou na primeira fase a União Soviética que era boa e ganhou com erros de arbitragem, goleou a Nova Zelândia que era ainda amadora, goleou a Escócia que também era fraca demais, a Argentina vencemos bem, mas os Hermanos sempre nos atacam, vão pra cima, diferente da Itália que joga recuada e de contra ataque. Bastou um time que sabia jogar no erro do adversário pra seleção tomar no fiofó. Telê era muito teimoso e isso atrapalhou, além de que estava ultrapassado, jogando como se ainda na década de 50 estivesse. O Telê do SP, já mais moderno, nunca que perderia esse jogo.
Ah, se na época os melhores times brasileiros eram Atlético e Flamengo, por que a base do time não eram esses 2??? Décadas antes botafogo e Santos eram os melhores e formavam a base da seleção, Brasil era vitorioso. Uns 4 do flamengo, mais 3 ou 4 do Atlético formavam a equipe ideal, com o complemento de alguns outros, como Falcão e Sócrates. Telê inventou muito.

Looking back on it, Brazil in 1982 were not really a team - only a brilliant midfield - probably the best in World Cup history. To emphasise this point, in this match, Serginho and Eder were non-existent and their defence was cut apart nearly every time the Italians counter attacked. Of their four midfielders - Cerezo, Socrates, Zico and Falcao - Zico clearly did not like playing right up and being tightly marked by Gentile and little was seen of him. The other three though, especially in the second half were quite superb.

Ma pensate veramente, che Paolo Rossi fosse un mostro, un "marziano"?!
--- Il centravanti titolare dell'Italia era Roberto Bettega (n°9 vero, fortissimo) ma si ruppe i legamenti a novemvre 81, quindi Bearzot (ct Nazionale Italia) convoco' Selvaggi ( altro centravanti forte in quel momento) ed escluse INCREDIBILMENTE, Roberto Pruzzo, forse il piu' forte n°9 di quegli anni (sara' tre volte capocannoniere della serie A) che pero' non "brillava" con la maglia della nazionale; altri due centravanti convocati furono Graziani ed Altobelli, (un gregario ed un uomo d'area).... ultimo attaccante ad essere convocato fu Paolo Rossi che era tornato a giocare a fine aprile 1982, dopo aver scontato (ingiustamente) due anni di squalifica che ne avevano quasi distrutto l' UOMO, Paolo Rossi; depressione, menischi con l'artrosi, scomparsa della muscolatura e della condizione agonistica.
Ma il "vecio" (Enzo Bearzot) gli aveva promesso che lo avrebbe portato con se, al mundial... e cosi' fu.
Bearzot scelse, per il mundial argentino, un fronte d'attacco leggero: di astuzia rapidita' ed opportunismo (Rossi) e di movimento, sacrificio e supporto (Graziani).
Paolo Rossi, le prime tre partite, era inguardabile, inesistente, completamente fuori dalla manovra, ritmi, schemi della squadra... non sfiorava neanche un pallone...un fantasma debole e in enorme difficolta'.
Bearzot, aggiusto' la configurazione della sua squadra e sfrutto' al massimo i suo gruppo di uomini, traendo il massimo profitto.
Una grande Italia, UMILE, concentrata, unita, determinata, equilibrata nei reparti, con spirito di sacrificio, comincio' a girare come un motore ben assemblato ed arrivarono i risultati. Grandi campioni si, ma il vero artefice della vittoria di quel mundial (ma anche della bella prova nel 78) e' sempre lui Enzo Bearzot, il "vecio".
Em 82 o Brasil tinha 3 centroavantes melhores que o Serginho pra Copa.

@@richardkylary3730 avremmo vinto ugualmente, siamo sempre stati umili, concentrati, determinati e abbiamo sempre usato la tattica, e l'intelligenza calcistica... nonostante anche a noi mancassero 4/5 grandi giocatori (come ho gia' scritto, non convocati al mundial "82, per tanti motivi) abbiamo vinto il titolo ugualmente.
Comunque Rossi non era affatto una seconda scelta. Concordo con l'analisi di fondo, ma Rossi era l'attaccante più prolifico del suo tempo e Bettega ormai era nella fase calante. La stessa vicenda che colpì Rossi semmai impedì di convocare Bruno Giordano, che era il più talentuoso e che poteva sicuramente dare il suo. Nel Brasile Serginho giocò perché Careca si infortunò poco prima dei mondiali.

Il calcio non e' solo "freestyle" doppiopasso, veroniche, elastico ecc il calcio e' anche battaglia, fisicita', tattica, strategia, carattere.... quindi, Potevano avere anche Careca (... noi Pruzzo, o Bettega, o Giordano...) ma li avremmo incartati ugualmente, abbiamo segnato 4 gol, tra l'altro(annullato ingiustamente a Giancarlo) ...Siamo stati nettamente piu' forti, e' bene che se ne facciano definitivamente una ragione; da quel giorno impararono una lezione di calcio VERO... a fare i funamboli con la ginga non s'arriva da nessuna parte e, guarda caso, nel "94 giocando all'italiana, conquisteranno il mondiale USA (..anche se ai rigori) proprio contro di noi, che avevamo cambiato mentalita' cacistica.

Pablito non era un fenomeno, siamo d'accordo, ma era il tipo d'attaccante opportunista che serviva per il momento. Non c'era nessuno come lui, in quell'epoca, in grado di fare questo tipo di gol con continuità. Bearzot gli era ovviamente grato soprattutto per il fatto che Rossi era già stato protagonista nel '78. Insomma, non era un improvvisato, né fuori posto. Ha funzionato tutto alla perfezione, perfino la sua scarsa forma iniziale è servita a fargli trovare una vena esplosiva finale.

En 1994 decidió por fin modernizarse y adoptar las tácticas argentinas de Menotti-Bilardo y rodear a los habilidosos de obreros incansables; le sirvió y muy bien para llegar a otras dos finales, pero después de 2002 su esquema volvió a agotarse. Muito obaoba e achismo da mídia na época. Muitos jogadores comuns e outros pseudo craques locais. Na hora do pega pra capar, deu nisso.
Seleção capenga, só sabia atacar e não se defender, tinha defeitos crônicos apontados por especialistas isentos, não alguns pachecões.
Lado direito tinha problemas, o time só sabia jogar com a bola, sem ela era nulo, goleiro não dava segurança, Serginho não tinha condições de ser titular, ainda sofremos com a ausência de Reinaldo e de Careca, incompreensível Dinamite não jogar.
Time se iludiu com jogos antes da copa que nada valiam.
Veja; pegou na primeira fase a União Soviética que era boa e ganhou com erros de arbitragem, goleou a Nova Zelândia que era ainda amadora, goleou a Escócia que também era fraca demais, a Argentina vencemos bem, mas os Hermanos sempre nos atacam, vão pra cima, diferente da Itália que joga recuada e de contra ataque.
Bastou um time que sabia jogar no erro do adversário pra seleção tomar no fiofó.
Telê era muito teimoso e isso atrapalhou, além de que estava ultrapassado, jogando como se ainda na década de 50 estivesse.
O Telê do SP, já mais moderno, nunca que perderia esse jogo.
Ah, se na época os melhores times brasileiros eram Atlético e Flamengo, por que a base do time não eram esses 2???
Décadas antes botafogo e Santos eram os melhores e formavam a base da seleção, Brasil era vitorioso.
Uns 4 do flamengo, mais 3 ou 4 do Atlético formavam a equipe ideal, com o complemento de alguns outros, como Falcão e Sócrates.

Italy should never have won. Gentile ripped Zico's shirt in the Italian penalty area. That should've been a penalty for Brazil and a red card for Gentile. Also, the corner from which Italy scored the third goal was unjustified: The goalkeeper was out of play, but not the ball.

Pour la déchirure du maillot de Zico par Gentile dans la surface de réparation italienne, le Brésil aurait dû se voir accorder un penalty et Gentile aurait dû recevoir un carton rouge. Le troisième but n'aurait jamais dû avoir lieu car le corner qui y conduisait a été faussement accordé : le gardien de but était hors jeu, mais pas le ballon. Tu dois être comme Stevie Wonder pour dire ce que tu as dit.
