So, the best way to get a tattoo is to look for a particular artist who has a style you like and would fit the general idea of what you want, letting your artist design a tattoo based off of some reference artwork you provide them with. The artist will be more enthusiastic about designing a unique tattoo with their own creative freedom and at the end of the day you will be happier with a tattoo that is unique to you that you helped create. Trust me on this one I have lots of tattoos and I don't love all of them. To be clear I'm not saying don't use community ideas, just go into it with the idea that you are just providing reference material and have an open mind and you will get some really sweet ink that is unique to only you.

Here are my thoughts, based on their individual strengths: - For eradication of the worst xenos foes or unspeakable eldritch horrors (Ghoul stars, Halo zone, Rak'Gol, Rangdan...) for which flexibility of approach against the unknown and the most powerful, forbidden mass destruction weaponry would be needed: Dark Angels - For infiltration operations aimed at decapitating leadership: it depends on the mode of execution and what you really want from it, kinda like how it goes for the different Assassin temples. If you want a psychological drawback, so that a ruling elite would never try to rise again out of fear, Night Lords (= Eversor). If tou want a precision strike from behind the scenes, without your actions even being known: Alpha Legion (Vindicare). For a surprise shock assault out of nowhere that ensures total dominance: Raven Guard (Callidus). - if you have to fight in the nost hazardous environments (especially toxic and/or radioactive): Death Guard - if you want a slow but steady and secure progress of assimilation: Word Bearers - If you want to kick it up some notches and also secure civilisation and prosperity: Ultramarines - If you are fighting an elusive enemy, a burgeoning empire that utilises advanced tactics and weaponry and you want a secure resolution of conflict: Ultramarines and Sons of Horus - Siege and consequent garrisoning: Iron Warriors - Fortification and stationary guarding: Imperial Fists - If you want total elimination of a foe with a display of overwhelming power as a psychological factor, until nothing but compliance remains: you need the efficient brutality of the Space Wolves or the brutal efficiency of the Iron Hands. I would also argue Blood Angels, if you want more finesse and you really want everything to get wiped off of records - If you're fighting grinding warfare with lots of losses: Death Guard if it's also hazardous, Iron Warriors if it's siege, and Iron Hands for anything else (they would also minimise losses through their preference towards mechanised assault and terminator armour) - If you want to crack open an unrelenting foe that doesn't seem to be wanting to yield: Blood Angels or Sons of Horus. - If you want a quick, surgical strike on an enemy: Emperor's children (especially when dealing with highly advanced cultures). If you want an enemy torn down piecemeal, but quickly and methodically: White Scars. - If you want eradication of bunkered down foes: Salamanders - Void warfare: Imperial Fists - If you're fighting enormous, grinding, bloody field battles and you want a blunt but efficient weapon to carry it: World Eaters. - For everything else... The poor Thousand Sons. If they were let grow in their psyker powers, they would've annihilated anything in their path. And most probably, themselves too.

I dare say the Luna Wolves’ famed and feared Justaeran terminator company wouldn’t be as good as they were without the Iron Hands experimenting with terminator armor. And, as for their combined arms warfare traits, if you got into a tank battle with the Iron Hands, you’re gonna get fuckin stomped. Iron Hands love their heavy armored vehicles, and they possessed the biggest and most advanced motor pool of all the legions.

Never forget that the Dark Angels had Men of Iron at their disposal to unleash upon their enemies. The Excindo Battle Automata. It was part of the Dreadwing (war crimes division) and could only be deployed on the Lion's orders because of the risks involved. The Lion was the only Primarch trusted enough by the Emperor to have access to the very thing that brought down the Terran Federation.
It seems like the Salamanders are somehow nerfed. With multi-meltas and hand crafted weapons, plus with a very strong homeworld culture, the Salamanders should be larger (even with their legendary compassion).
Getting a video about how each of the primarchs would have reacted to being in Guillimans current situation would be pretty cool, to see how they run or destroy their new imperium
I think the Lion would be one of the worse options, his paranoia and general dickishness would turn the high lords against him far quicker and he would struggle with the sheer scale of the post-cicatrix situation. but once he is in place, his intimidation factor would help with loyalty issue. Dorn would be quite a good option, since defending against absolute shitstorm is his forte, but i think his patience would run very thin quickly with the high lords, the inquisition and the ecclesiarchy. Jaghatai would hate his job, plainly, he is no tyrant, and would have none of the high lords and administratum bullshit, and don't even start on the inquisition. Ferrus will be a ruthless ruler, crushing any who stand in his way but not opposed to the administratum or the inquisition which he would see as necessary evil. Corax is no leader, his style does not quite fit the image of the ruler and i think he would quickly have enough of the high lords nonsense. Vulkan is too good of a soul for the job, give him an enemy and let him go wild, but don't expect him to be a ruler. Russ is a weapon, not a man, a weapon cannot rule, also he would kill the inquisition immediatly. Sanguinius is litteraly perfect, his charisma and presence only would assure the loyalty of anyone, and if not, his strengh and ferocity will shut anyone who dares to defy him. That's just my opinion, sorry for the wall of text :cc
Horus didn't bother with stealth troops because he used pre Corvus Raven Guard as his stealth troops. Corvus was one of the few that hated pre heresy horus because of that, and for not giving due credit to them.
Agreed, alot of easy victories were given to the Luna Wolves due to Raven Guard softening them up via leadership assassination, supply lines being severed, key reconnaissance intel etc. Before the main Luna Wolves Assault
When I think about it Horus really snatched a lot of compliances that should have gone to the raven guard. Would he have even had the highest number of compliances without them?
Let's hope Space Marine 2 is a step forward in that direction in terms of development assets. Plus Raven Guard were available as a chapter skin in the original game
Emperor's Children also excelled at combined arms tactics. They worked extremely well alongside other Legions and mortal Imperial Army forces (unless being led by Eidelon), including adapting to and utilising Guillimans proto-codex tactics more precisely than his own Ultramarines.
Missed a few things here mate from the lore - e.g Wolves were the Emperors executioners (A Thousand Sons), White Scars were to add randomness to the Imperium (Malcador speaking to Sanguinius in Warhawk), Death Guard were to protect (Flight of the Eisenstein), Thousand Sons were to sit on the Golden Throne and run the Webway Great channel keep the vids coming
"Executioners". Russ was believed to have killed either II or XI Primarch, and the other was killed in the Rangdan Xenocides (or potentially both died there, but it is all but hard confirmed that either the II or XI Legion died in that conflict). Wolves were used to send a message, whereas the Dark Angels were sent to remove it from existence.
I honestly feel like GW has completely dropped the ball on the world eaters background. Specifically their pre-nails temperament. In newer lore, Angron is supposed to be this great psykic empath, basically a primarch therapist, only becoming a angry berserker through the butchers nails. None of that would affect his sons, until they too embrace the nails, meaning that they would essentially be the biggest bros in the galaxy, essentially a bunch of super charismatic, calm and understanding mega-bros who solve problems with words rather than violence when they can. That could also be a perfect way to play Kharn, why he succeeded in convincing Angron. He was simply the biggest bro in a legion of bros, so while the other captians tried to talk and therapise he went above and beyond, having the nails implanted to be able to truly understand his primarch. This would also makes Angron the most pivotal primarch after the scattering, and why emps simply gave up on him righ away. He had no use for a berserker, he needed a therapist to fix all the other broken primarchs. A primarch-level therapist might have been able to help fulgrim and magnus with their hubris, Horus with his daddy issues, lorgar with his fanaticism and need for validation, perty and morty with their victim complexes and konrad with his criminal lack of social skills. In other words, he was kind of the key to un-fucking everything.

The alpha legion also now has access to new men children that Fabius Bile gave them. So they have super soldier secret agents that look like normal humans.

Salamanders are under appreciated. They are probably as tanky as the Death guard due to their OP armor, and their fire power is no joke. They are known for being sent into the harshest meat grinder battle fields, for their "legendary endurance" (quoted by a Death Guard, no less). Before they were named the Salamanders and before they went by the name "Dragon Warriors", their legion was referred to as "The Fearless". You have to be a special kind of badass to be the SM legion that gets that title.
broke the siege of the tempest gallery single handed. because of loosing 19,000 marines in that they basically acted alone for the entire great crusade not conducting compliance actions but acting as the mop used to stop a flood when shit went down. almost always they were alone and when not alone it was Imperial Army not Astartes they became known for being a death sentence for those they served with and the saviours of those they came to save. honestly he always seems to do the sallies a little dirty sure they are really wholesome bros with a flamer that are loyal to a fault but they are strong tough stubborn unyielding and as Dante said what every space marine should aspire to be
the iron warrior novels showcased their formidable logistics abilities. In The iron hands novels they had access to a matrix like simulation environment where they could experience battles throughout history Also the were networked (combat network) More sophisticated than other chapters
Alpharius also had an ability to hide in plain sight by making himself unnoticed. It even worked against many of his brothers. I feel that the first legion and the last one also shared a specialty in secrecy. Neither the Dark Angels or the Alpha Legion will tell you shit. The Dark Angels won't say a word and the Alpha Legion will just tell a dozen lies and just enough truth to confuse the issue. Both were very secretive Legions. The Dark Angels held the Emperor's Dark Age and forbidden weaponry and the Alpha Legion was active for years before being officially announced operating with no insignia or the insignia of other legions. I just think the two legions had a lot in common.

Id actually say the Blood Angels were the most resilient chapter. While other chapters took heavy loses and took years to rebuild, the Blood Angels would take take serious loses and still end the campaign with almost the same numbers they started with, thats a pretty resilient chapter, and down right fucking scary too
Even scarier when you realise they literally ate the brains of their dead leaders. Other legions had to promote new generals. Blood Angels simply ate them and became them.
Yup, they were perfect for spreading the Imperial Truth and were the ones who concocted the Imperial Creed. The Thousand sons were probably intended to operate and fuel the Astronomican and the Imperial Webway, as well as fending off warp fuckery much like how the Grey Knights and Librarians do.

@@Subject_Keter Not quite. The Word Bearers were genetically coded to obey Lorgar, so he didn't really need to purge his own legion. With the Ultramarines many would side with the Imperium and these would give the Codex to the other loyalist legions, effectively giving them the instruction manual of the Ultramarines. So the purge required plus the amount of loyalist Ultras would result in a weaker traitor legion. Still a powerhouse, but not as overpowered as it was in canon. The result would probably be something like the Roboutian or the Dornian Heresy fanfics: The Realm of Ultramar in control of renegade/chaos SM with the Imperium being unable to seize any meaningful territory, until Hivefleet Behemoth shows up and all goes to shit for the Ultras not having the backup of Battlefleet Tempestus to fend off the attack on Maccrage.
One thing to add about Luna Wolves is their emphasis on speartip assaults and decapitation strikes, hitting the enemy at their weakest and going for the throat: that being enemy command. They also make use of specialist squads though not to the level of the Dark Angels, with their Justaerin Terminators for said decapitation strikes and Reaver Squads for swift assaults. It was this propensity for speartip assaults that influenced Rogal Dorn to set a trap at the Saturnine Wall, where the Imperial Palace had a major weakness. Dorn hoped that he could catch Horus, but instead it was Abaddon who fell for the bait and the majority of the Justaerin and Reaver squads were destroyed. Sidenote about the Saturnine Wall, both Horus and Perturabo predicted that Dorn would prepare for such a strike, which meant Abaddon had to go behind Horus' back, and Perturabo just let it happen in case the gamble paid off.
Let us also not forget the autistic brilliance of both Peter-Turbo and Dorn, each sending an incompetent Captain to seize a critical location, as both knew it was important and neither would expect the person to be one of their least competent Captains, and therefore force the other to deploy differently expecting potential traps from potential misdeployments. Except they both used the same tactic... on something both sides actually needed to secure. Dorn, if nothing else, was always implacable and predictable, so him deviating from that was always rare. Just makes the whole event even funnier.
Ye but on average the Luna Wolves sucked at stealth, which is why Horus used the Raven Guard as the stealth operatives before The Emperor found Corvus. Corvus was not very fond of Horus for using his sons like that.

The white scars are very accurate to the Mongolian hordes they’re based on, Ghengis Khan would often conquer territories diplomatically before warfare was considered. And the hit and run tactics were used by the Mongolians too, as retaliation would be impossible
yes becaus the best defense is do not be there. Its a very efficient form of warfare. Thou they should have also given sieges to white scars as well because mongols were god's at sieges.
Funny enough you mentioned the Lunar wolves not being good at stealth. Before Corvus Corax was found the raven guard often traveled with the Luna wolves because of there stealth abilities and tracking skills which paired well with the Lunar wolves overwhelming fighting style. Basically the Lunar wolves would attack the enemy head on while the raven guard would pick off stragglers and enemy’s attempting to flee.
Dark angels deserve better lore. They are arguably one of the most powerful space marine legions, yet they are shown as paranoid autistic super soldiers, obsessed with the fallen.
They were always secretive by nature from the start, and were often utilised to do the nasty work in secret during the GC. Aside from keeping with their nature, they had legit reason to keep the fate of caliban and the fallen a secret. It just got taken to a ridiculous extreme by the chapter in the proceeding millennia. Reverting back to how they were before the lion came to the legion
Speaking of the "lost" legions, I've found explicit proof in lore that Leman Russ killed at least one of them. He says something about it in Wolfbane. A very small sentence that I've always overlooked but as a writer myself and being used to reda tion after reading, I missed it for ages but it's so obvious once you see (or hear) it. Hence he also explicitly says what he was made for too! He didn't just name himself the Emperor's Executioner.

Stealthy Luna Wolf: Severian from the Outcast Dead. He's one of the Crusader Host left on Terra when Horus Turns. After the events of the book, he's still on the run and even makes an appearance in later stories. Super Stealthy.
After a certain point, chapter comparisons just seem to descend into: "My chapter is the best at [x]." "Oh yeah? Mine is even better than yours because [y]!"
Tat idea: Since you're a fan of the Dark Angels and also probably a fan of not having to spend multiple sessions and boatloads of scratch getting a complex tat with linework, filler and touchups, I'd recommend getting the Hexagrammaton. It's simple (so it'll be cheap and easy for your artist), quick and not immediately recognizable as a WH40K symbol (unless you're already in the know, which totally aligns with the Dark Angels' mysterious vibe).
The actual strength of the IV Legion Iron Warriors is organization, something that enables them to be siege specialists, and an underrated aspect that made the IV one of the strongest legions. The difference between IV and VII Legions is that mastery of organization of the IV and the mastery of fleet tactics of the VII.
Had Sigismund lead the Phall fleet instead of Pollux Perturabo would have wiped out the entire Imperial Fists fleet! Sigismund is dead and far away. Perturabo has more troops and ships. Horus easily wins the Heresy
Yup, they also ran a lot of battle simulations in their lodge. So they were one of the few legions that had Space Marine vs Space Marine combat in consideration before the heresy.
The Iron Warriors low key are the best organised of the legions - yes their battle doctrine means they take serious losses, but their quick preparation, quality of training and general professionalism means they can replace their losses fast. Furthermore they had the logistical capabilities to make it all work. If their doctrine was such that they didn't take such hideous losses they'd have been able overwhelm any other legion.
I would really think it awesome if you could possibly do a video on the different fighting styles that show up throughout the lore. Such as the style Eisenhorn and other notable characters use and go in depth with them as you see fit. Love your work keep it up 👍🏿
My understanding of the more versatile legions. If ultramarine are a well organized army of jacks-of-all-trade with meta supplies line, Wordbearers a crusade of warrior priests (faith and steel combination), then DA are a raid forces of multiple sub-parties each with specific roles like ranged parties, tank parties, melee dps parties, mage parties, kite parties etc.

11:04 there was this one luna wolf captain severian who was one of these permanent present marines (crusader host) on terra during the crusade. he met with loken on terra and infiltrated the vengeful spirit with other marines - including loken and qruze who was killed by horus - to assassinate horus. this captain was pretty stealthy
Some of them I'm not sure of, but I'd guess they'd have roles related to the said strengths. For example, Magnus would probably be sitting on the Golden Throne, keeping the Astonomicon going while the Emperor continued building the human webway, while his Thousand Sons would help to guide the various sanctioned psykers to better regulate their powers, including the astropaths, navigators, and others. Guilliman would probably be the figurehead of the Administratum, while his Ultramarines would help to handle the logistics of a galaxy-spanning trade empire. The Salamanders, Iron Hands, Death Guard, and their Primarchs would probably be doing something like Terra-forming worlds due their improved constitutions, equipment, and augmetics, meaning that they could more easily take a greater role in converting relatively unpleasant worlds into ones more suitable for human habitation. The Word Bearers would probably have the purpose of enforcing the secular Imperial Truth, helping to eliminate cult uprisings whether they be Chaos or some other religion. The Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists would probably have been given the task of fortifying the entire Imperium, given that there were still extra-galactic threats (or OLD galactic threats like the Necrons) that would need to be fought. The complete pacification of the galaxy wouldn't require the elimination of all xenos (like the Eldar or, eventurally, the Tau) so if treaties were made with such species rather than extermination, there would probably be fortifications put up in case those treaties ever fell apart. Some of the more "war-focused" Legions like the Dark Angels and White Scars would probably be maintained as a standing army for the same reason. You could probably include the Luna Wolves, Space Wolves, and maybe Blood Angels in that group. The Emperor's Children would probably function like consultants for the other Legions, with Fulgrim being a consultant for the other Primarchs. Their desire for perfection could lend them to seeing small flaws in the efficiency or practices of other Legions to help them improve that extra 3-5% beyond their already excellent performance. Angron and the World Eaters are a little trickier, though based on his original Primarch ability for empathy and helping to relieve pain, he may have (ironically) been meant to be something like a Galactic Healer, helping to restore the galaxy after a long and brutal crusade. Alpharius (NO! I'M Alpharius!!) and the Alpha Legion would probably have been something akin to diplomats and lawyers, helping to smooth over conflicts between Imperial worlds and sectors, preventing the kind of in-fighting present between countries of the world today. The Night Lords and Raven Guard are more questionable. Konrad and his Night Lords may have ironically been meant to help keep a more "logical" bottom line. Meaning they could make the cold-hearted calls necessary to triage the various situations that would inevitably develop even in a galaxy without war. Their approach to warfare (that ended up killing the fewest people to achieve the best result) is rather indicative of that sort of mindset. Corvus and his Raven Guard would probably act as scouts to help warn the Imperium of threats, both from within and without. They'd probably be an early warning system about threats like the Tyranids while also helping to identify new problem hotspots quickly like if a new rift were to open or a part of the Imperium looked like it wanted to secede.

It was implied (on several occasions) that the Emperor had other purposes for the Space Marines and their Primarchs after the Great Crusade was successful, rather than just destroying them like the Thunder Warriors. So I took the question to effectively be: what was each one's purpose when constant fighting is no longer necessary? Of course they'd all still be part of effectively a reserve force. They'd all keep some degree of re-training and maintenance as an important part of their culture, but they all can't just keep sitting around waiting for an enemy that isn't going to show for a few thousand years. As for the Salamanders specifically, there are a lot of things they didn't or couldn't do because, once again, they were always fighting. Some Legions deliberately kept their homeworlds inhospitable to improve the quality of their recruits, but what happens when the fighting is largely over? Also, what about the Legions (like the Salamanders) with an affinity for crafting and inventing? Are they just going to keep filling more and more armories with new and inventive weaponry they'll almost certainly never use, or are they maybe going to turn those talents to some peacetime pursuits?

Imperial Fists have an absurd number of specialties: -Siege (offense and defense, substantially better than the IW) -Thunder hammers -Power Fists -Bolters -Urban Warfare -Void Warfare -Boarding actions -Shield use -Assault Cannons -Anti-Armour
With regards to IW vs IF on siege offense, Horus himself is firmly certain that Dorn is the superior siegemaster. He said that if Dorn had been conducting the siege rather than Perturabo they'd have conquered Terra in two weeks. This is from The End and The Death.
Factually Perturabo was winning the siege until he retreated because Horus replaced him with Mortarion. Also (just my take but) Horus in the End and the death is close to insanity. This is why i am not sure if we can take what he says word by word.

I hold to the idea that the Night Lords were by far the most humane legion. Skinning kids and throwing it up on global twitch might be a little twisted, but that beats nuking multiple cities to make people submit.
i disagree. Even if you say that thats the "lesser evil" im convinced both the ravenguard and alpha legion are able to it with even less casulties (at least civilianwise). Not to mention that you have to balance it against the legions whose primarchs could bring entire world into the fold through diplomacy. Because i dont think konrad was ever able to do that

Yeah, the NL left a population terrified to the core and compliant but the issue with rule by fear is that the population will turn on you the second the opportunity arises. Just look at the current imperium.
I feel like the night lords lack of general destruction was a byproduct of them wanting to torture people more than they wanted to fight. If they were worried about shock and awe, and weren’t being sadistic about it, they’d have targeted world leaders, high ranking combatants and other ADULT members of those societies. The fact they went after kids so much tells me they cared more about just scaring the fuck out of people than they did lessening their suffering long term. In the very beginning, I imagine it was more like majorkill described it, but it didn’t take long for the night lords to start flaying babies for fun and getting compliances as a second thought. If you combined that with actual structural reform, the night lords would have had more worlds STAY compliant. That’s more what the raven Guard and alpha legion did. They’d either assassinate or play 10D chess with the most important people on a world, crush their resistance before it even gets going, then leave the peace making to the imperial diplomats who handled the boring part. Where the NL’s fail is their idea that fear alone can bring peace, or compliance. While active, you can keep a population under control, but Nostramo is a perfect example of what happens when fear alone is no longer directly able to KEEP people compliant: it falls apart. Konrad probably did the second most impressive job on his home planet out of all the primarchs. (G man Turning 40k into stellaris is #1) but in the end his planet was even less stable than Barberous, or Nuceria, since it required Konrad to be actively flaying babies and shit to keep the population scared enough to not try anything.
World Eaters: Strengths- High degree of martial prowess, masters of melee combat and frontal assaults Weaknesses- Lack of critical thinking, tactics nore complex than "charge and keep stabbing until the problem goes away", a strong desire to eat crayons
I remember in book 2 of Dark Imperium, a Death Guard marine was shot like 10 times by lascannons and looked like squid cheese, but still alive, they’re so tanky

The true strength of the Imperial Fists is their sense of duty, to an almost boring degree. If big E told a Fist to go wipe all the windows of the palace, he'd do it, and he would do it the best and without complaint. If big E told the Fiats to make what could have been their last stand on Terra, they'd do it, and they'd do it the best and without complaint. They are truly the most soldier-like of them all. Dorn's unwavering sense of duty was a real chip on his shoulder, and the struggles he went through with his brothers during the crusade and the heresy are truly humanistic and inspiring.
Yeah it's debatable if Alpha Legion is even a traitor Legion. It's stated outright that Omegon saw the "third way" and released the White Scars from the becalming in Chondax.
The Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Dark Angels, and Luna Wolves are the the most flexible legions. Jacks of all trades, king of a few, and masters of atleast one, these are the legions one would want in a military action regardless of the enemy. They can assault, defend, infiltrate, terrify, use combined arms, fortify, dismantle, hit and run, and apply levels of flexibility that the other legions can't match. I would put the Emperor's Children, Imperial Fists, and Iron Hands right under them. These three excel in one thing and are great at everything else, but not to the extent of the one's above. The rest of the Legions are more specialized, and thrive in their respective roles. They are excellent at all things, but the Death Guard wouldn't dare to attempt an aerial assault on the Blood Angels, and you will never see the Raven Guard try to take down the Space Wolves in a frontal assault.

So, the best way to get a tattoo is to look for a particular artist who has a style you like and would fit the general idea of what you want, letting your artist design a tattoo based off of some reference artwork you provide them with. The artist will be more enthusiastic about designing a unique tattoo with their own creative freedom and at the end of the day you will be happier with a tattoo that is unique to you that you helped create. Trust me on this one I have lots of tattoos and I don't love all of them. To be clear I'm not saying don't use community ideas, just go into it with the idea that you are just providing reference material and have an open mind and you will get some really sweet ink that is unique to only you.

I've been thinking also on the best scenarios where you would send each legion. Here are my thoughts, based on their individual strengths:
- For eradication of the worst xenos foes or unspeakable eldritch horrors (Ghoul stars, Halo zone, Rak'Gol, Rangdan...) for which flexibility of approach against the unknown and the most powerful, forbidden mass destruction weaponry would be needed: Dark Angels
- For infiltration operations aimed at decapitating leadership: it depends on the mode of execution and what you really want from it, kinda like how it goes for the different Assassin temples. If you want a psychological drawback, so that a ruling elite would never try to rise again out of fear, Night Lords (= Eversor). If tou want a precision strike from behind the scenes, without your actions even being known: Alpha Legion (Vindicare). For a surprise shock assault out of nowhere that ensures total dominance: Raven Guard (Callidus).
- if you have to fight in the nost hazardous environments (especially toxic and/or radioactive): Death Guard
- if you want a slow but steady and secure progress of assimilation: Word Bearers
- If you want to kick it up some notches and also secure civilisation and prosperity: Ultramarines
- If you are fighting an elusive enemy, a burgeoning empire that utilises advanced tactics and weaponry and you want a secure resolution of conflict: Ultramarines and Sons of Horus
- Siege and consequent garrisoning: Iron Warriors
- Fortification and stationary guarding: Imperial Fists
- If you want total elimination of a foe with a display of overwhelming power as a psychological factor, until nothing but compliance remains: you need the efficient brutality of the Space Wolves or the brutal efficiency of the Iron Hands. I would also argue Blood Angels, if you want more finesse and you really want everything to get wiped off of records
- If you're fighting grinding warfare with lots of losses: Death Guard if it's also hazardous, Iron Warriors if it's siege, and Iron Hands for anything else (they would also minimise losses through their preference towards mechanised assault and terminator armour)
- If you want to crack open an unrelenting foe that doesn't seem to be wanting to yield: Blood Angels or Sons of Horus.
- If you want a quick, surgical strike on an enemy: Emperor's children (especially when dealing with highly advanced cultures). If you want an enemy torn down piecemeal, but quickly and methodically: White Scars.
- If you want eradication of bunkered down foes: Salamanders
- Void warfare: Imperial Fists
- If you're fighting enormous, grinding, bloody field battles and you want a blunt but efficient weapon to carry it: World Eaters.
- For everything else... The poor Thousand Sons. If they were let grow in their psyker powers, they would've annihilated anything in their path. And most probably, themselves too.

The Iron Hands loved terminator armor so much, and they were so good with it, that other legions were taking notes on how the Iron Hands made use of it. I dare say the Luna Wolves’ famed and feared Justaeran terminator company wouldn’t be as good as they were without the Iron Hands experimenting with terminator armor.
And, as for their combined arms warfare traits, if you got into a tank battle with the Iron Hands, you’re gonna get fuckin stomped. Iron Hands love their heavy armored vehicles, and they possessed the biggest and most advanced motor pool of all the legions.
To the 1st: "So are you the best at melee, ranged, tactics, killing xenos, or maybe sneaking?"
Dark Angels: "Yes."

Never forget that the Dark Angels had Men of Iron at their disposal to unleash upon their enemies. The Excindo Battle Automata. It was part of the Dreadwing (war crimes division) and could only be deployed on the Lion's orders because of the risks involved.
The Lion was the only Primarch trusted enough by the Emperor to have access to the very thing that brought down the Terran Federation.

I think the Lion would be one of the worse options, his paranoia and general dickishness would turn the high lords against him far quicker and he would struggle with the sheer scale of the post-cicatrix situation. but once he is in place, his intimidation factor would help with loyalty issue. Dorn would be quite a good option, since defending against absolute shitstorm is his forte, but i think his patience would run very thin quickly with the high lords, the inquisition and the ecclesiarchy. Jaghatai would hate his job, plainly, he is no tyrant, and would have none of the high lords and administratum bullshit, and don't even start on the inquisition. Ferrus will be a ruthless ruler, crushing any who stand in his way but not opposed to the administratum or the inquisition which he would see as necessary evil. Corax is no leader, his style does not quite fit the image of the ruler and i think he would quickly have enough of the high lords nonsense. Vulkan is too good of a soul for the job, give him an enemy and let him go wild, but don't expect him to be a ruler. Russ is a weapon, not a man, a weapon cannot rule, also he would kill the inquisition immediatly. Sanguinius is litteraly perfect, his charisma and presence only would assure the loyalty of anyone, and if not, his strengh and ferocity will shut anyone who dares to defy him. That's just my opinion, sorry for the wall of text :cc

Horus didn't bother with stealth troops because he used pre Corvus Raven Guard as his stealth troops.
Corvus was one of the few that hated pre heresy horus because of that, and for not giving due credit to them.
Agreed, alot of easy victories were given to the Luna Wolves due to Raven Guard softening them up via leadership assassination, supply lines being severed, key reconnaissance intel etc. Before the main Luna Wolves Assault

Emperor's Children also excelled at combined arms tactics. They worked extremely well alongside other Legions and mortal Imperial Army forces (unless being led by Eidelon), including adapting to and utilising Guillimans proto-codex tactics more precisely than his own Ultramarines.

Missed a few things here mate from the lore - e.g Wolves were the Emperors executioners (A Thousand Sons), White Scars were to add randomness to the Imperium (Malcador speaking to Sanguinius in Warhawk), Death Guard were to protect (Flight of the Eisenstein), Thousand Sons were to sit on the Golden Throne and run the Webway

"Executioners". Russ was believed to have killed either II or XI Primarch, and the other was killed in the Rangdan Xenocides (or potentially both died there, but it is all but hard confirmed that either the II or XI Legion died in that conflict). Wolves were used to send a message, whereas the Dark Angels were sent to remove it from existence.
I honestly feel like GW has completely dropped the ball on the world eaters background.
Specifically their pre-nails temperament.
In newer lore, Angron is supposed to be this great psykic empath, basically a primarch therapist, only becoming a angry berserker through the butchers nails.
None of that would affect his sons, until they too embrace the nails, meaning that they would essentially be the biggest bros in the galaxy, essentially a bunch of super charismatic, calm and understanding mega-bros who solve problems with words rather than violence when they can.
That could also be a perfect way to play Kharn, why he succeeded in convincing Angron. He was simply the biggest bro in a legion of bros, so while the other captians tried to talk and therapise he went above and beyond, having the nails implanted to be able to truly understand his primarch.
This would also makes Angron the most pivotal primarch after the scattering, and why emps simply gave up on him righ away.
He had no use for a berserker, he needed a therapist to fix all the other broken primarchs.
A primarch-level therapist might have been able to help fulgrim and magnus with their hubris, Horus with his daddy issues, lorgar with his fanaticism and need for validation, perty and morty with their victim complexes and konrad with his criminal lack of social skills.
In other words, he was kind of the key to un-fucking everything.
My favorite part about the imperial fist Defense is when they manage to get to the walls is the Melee afterwards.

Salamanders are under appreciated. They are probably as tanky as the Death guard due to their OP armor, and their fire power is no joke. They are known for being sent into the harshest meat grinder battle fields, for their "legendary endurance" (quoted by a Death Guard, no less). Before they were named the Salamanders and before they went by the name "Dragon Warriors", their legion was referred to as "The Fearless". You have to be a special kind of badass to be the SM legion that gets that title.
broke the siege of the tempest gallery single handed. because of loosing 19,000 marines in that they basically acted alone for the entire great crusade not conducting compliance actions but acting as the mop used to stop a flood when shit went down. almost always they were alone and when not alone it was Imperial Army not Astartes they became known for being a death sentence for those they served with and the saviours of those they came to save. honestly he always seems to do the sallies a little dirty

Alpharius also had an ability to hide in plain sight by making himself unnoticed. It even worked against many of his brothers. I feel that the first legion and the last one also shared a specialty in secrecy. Neither the Dark Angels or the Alpha Legion will tell you shit. The Dark Angels won't say a word and the Alpha Legion will just tell a dozen lies and just enough truth to confuse the issue. Both were very secretive Legions. The Dark Angels held the Emperor's Dark Age and forbidden weaponry and the Alpha Legion was active for years before being officially announced operating with no insignia or the insignia of other legions. I just think the two legions had a lot in common.
I think that for the major minis what would really really make them more popular is if you convert well-loved art into model form. Thanks for the great content!
There are stealthy Luna Wolves. One of them was so good at it that he was almost raven guard level
Id actually say the Blood Angels were the most resilient chapter. While other chapters took heavy loses and took years to rebuild, the Blood Angels would take take serious loses and still end the campaign with almost the same numbers they started with, thats a pretty resilient chapter, and down right fucking scary too
Even scarier when you realise they literally ate the brains of their dead leaders. Other legions had to promote new generals. Blood Angels simply ate them and became them.
I love explaining some lore of Blood Angels and then people get bored they whip out the trusty ol "So they're space vampires?"

The Word Bearers were genetically coded to obey Lorgar, so he didn't really need to purge his own legion.
With the Ultramarines many would side with the Imperium and these would give the Codex to the other loyalist legions, effectively giving them the instruction manual of the Ultramarines. So the purge required plus the amount of loyalist Ultras would result in a weaker traitor legion. Still a powerhouse, but not as overpowered as it was in canon.
The result would probably be something like the Roboutian or the Dornian Heresy fanfics: The Realm of Ultramar in control of renegade/chaos SM with the Imperium being unable to seize any meaningful territory, until Hivefleet Behemoth shows up and all goes to shit for the Ultras not having the backup of Battlefleet Tempestus to fend off the attack on Maccrage.
One thing to add about Luna Wolves is their emphasis on speartip assaults and decapitation strikes, hitting the enemy at their weakest and going for the throat: that being enemy command. They also make use of specialist squads though not to the level of the Dark Angels, with their Justaerin Terminators for said decapitation strikes and Reaver Squads for swift assaults. It was this propensity for speartip assaults that influenced Rogal Dorn to set a trap at the Saturnine Wall, where the Imperial Palace had a major weakness. Dorn hoped that he could catch Horus, but instead it was Abaddon who fell for the bait and the majority of the Justaerin and Reaver squads were destroyed. Sidenote about the Saturnine Wall, both Horus and Perturabo predicted that Dorn would prepare for such a strike, which meant Abaddon had to go behind Horus' back, and Perturabo just let it happen in case the gamble paid off.
Let us also not forget the autistic brilliance of both Peter-Turbo and Dorn, each sending an incompetent Captain to seize a critical location, as both knew it was important and neither would expect the person to be one of their least competent Captains, and therefore force the other to deploy differently expecting potential traps from potential misdeployments.
Except they both used the same tactic... on something both sides actually needed to secure.
Dorn, if nothing else, was always implacable and predictable, so him deviating from that was always rare. Just makes the whole event even funnier.

Ye but on average the Luna Wolves sucked at stealth, which is why Horus used the Raven Guard as the stealth operatives before The Emperor found Corvus.

The white scars are very accurate to the Mongolian hordes they’re based on, Ghengis Khan would often conquer territories diplomatically before warfare was considered. And the hit and run tactics were used by the Mongolians too, as retaliation would be impossible
yes becaus the best defense is do not be there. Its a very efficient form of warfare. Thou they should have also given sieges to white scars as well because mongols were god's at sieges.
Funny enough you mentioned the Lunar wolves not being good at stealth. Before Corvus Corax was found the raven guard often traveled with the Luna wolves because of there stealth abilities and tracking skills which paired well with the Lunar wolves overwhelming fighting style. Basically the Lunar wolves would attack the enemy head on while the raven guard would pick off stragglers and enemy’s attempting to flee.

Dark angels deserve better lore. They are arguably one of the most powerful space marine legions, yet they are shown as paranoid autistic super soldiers, obsessed with the fallen.
They were always secretive by nature from the start, and were often utilised to do the nasty work in secret during the GC. Aside from keeping with their nature, they had legit reason to keep the fate of caliban and the fallen a secret. It just got taken to a ridiculous extreme by the chapter in the proceeding millennia. Reverting back to how they were before the lion came to the legion

Speaking of the "lost" legions, I've found explicit proof in lore that Leman Russ killed at least one of them. He says something about it in Wolfbane. A very small sentence that I've always overlooked but as a writer myself and being used to reda tion after reading, I missed it for ages but it's so obvious once you see (or hear) it. Hence he also explicitly says what he was made for too! He didn't just name himself the Emperor's Executioner.

Stealthy Luna Wolf: Severian from the Outcast Dead. He's one of the Crusader Host left on Terra when Horus Turns. After the events of the book, he's still on the run and even makes an appearance in later stories. Super Stealthy.

Tat idea: Since you're a fan of the Dark Angels and also probably a fan of not having to spend multiple sessions and boatloads of scratch getting a complex tat with linework, filler and touchups, I'd recommend getting the Hexagrammaton. It's simple (so it'll be cheap and easy for your artist), quick and not immediately recognizable as a WH40K symbol (unless you're already in the know, which totally aligns with the Dark Angels' mysterious vibe).

The actual strength of the IV Legion Iron Warriors is organization, something that enables them to be siege specialists, and an underrated aspect that made the IV one of the strongest legions. The difference between IV and VII Legions is that mastery of organization of the IV and the mastery of fleet tactics of the VII.
Had Sigismund lead the Phall fleet instead of Pollux Perturabo would have wiped out the entire Imperial Fists fleet!
Sigismund is dead and far away. Perturabo has more troops and ships. Horus easily wins the Heresy

The Iron Warriors low key are the best organised of the legions - yes their battle doctrine means they take serious losses, but their quick preparation, quality of training and general professionalism means they can replace their losses fast. Furthermore they had the logistical capabilities to make it all work. If their doctrine was such that they didn't take such hideous losses they'd have been able overwhelm any other legion.

My understanding of the more versatile legions.
If ultramarine are a well organized army of jacks-of-all-trade with meta supplies line, Wordbearers a crusade of warrior priests (faith and steel combination), then DA are a raid forces of multiple sub-parties each with specific roles like ranged parties, tank parties, melee dps parties, mage parties, kite parties etc.
Night Lords had Sevatar. Not sure how much more of a badass there is than that.

If the Great Crusade was successful, the galaxy pacified, and no heresy, what would each primarch be doing during this new Pax Imperialis Aeterna?
Some of them I'm not sure of, but I'd guess they'd have roles related to the said strengths.
For example, Magnus would probably be sitting on the Golden Throne, keeping the Astonomicon going while the Emperor continued building the human webway, while his Thousand Sons would help to guide the various sanctioned psykers to better regulate their powers, including the astropaths, navigators, and others.
Guilliman would probably be the figurehead of the Administratum, while his Ultramarines would help to handle the logistics of a galaxy-spanning trade empire.
The Salamanders, Iron Hands, Death Guard, and their Primarchs would probably be doing something like Terra-forming worlds due their improved constitutions, equipment, and augmetics, meaning that they could more easily take a greater role in converting relatively unpleasant worlds into ones more suitable for human habitation.
The Word Bearers would probably have the purpose of enforcing the secular Imperial Truth, helping to eliminate cult uprisings whether they be Chaos or some other religion.
The Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists would probably have been given the task of fortifying the entire Imperium, given that there were still extra-galactic threats (or OLD galactic threats like the Necrons) that would need to be fought. The complete pacification of the galaxy wouldn't require the elimination of all xenos (like the Eldar or, eventurally, the Tau) so if treaties were made with such species rather than extermination, there would probably be fortifications put up in case those treaties ever fell apart.
Some of the more "war-focused" Legions like the Dark Angels and White Scars would probably be maintained as a standing army for the same reason. You could probably include the Luna Wolves, Space Wolves, and maybe Blood Angels in that group.
The Emperor's Children would probably function like consultants for the other Legions, with Fulgrim being a consultant for the other Primarchs. Their desire for perfection could lend them to seeing small flaws in the efficiency or practices of other Legions to help them improve that extra 3-5% beyond their already excellent performance.
Angron and the World Eaters are a little trickier, though based on his original Primarch ability for empathy and helping to relieve pain, he may have (ironically) been meant to be something like a Galactic Healer, helping to restore the galaxy after a long and brutal crusade.
Alpharius (NO! I'M Alpharius!!) and the Alpha Legion would probably have been something akin to diplomats and lawyers, helping to smooth over conflicts between Imperial worlds and sectors, preventing the kind of in-fighting present between countries of the world today.
The Night Lords and Raven Guard are more questionable. Konrad and his Night Lords may have ironically been meant to help keep a more "logical" bottom line. Meaning they could make the cold-hearted calls necessary to triage the various situations that would inevitably develop even in a galaxy without war. Their approach to warfare (that ended up killing the fewest people to achieve the best result) is rather indicative of that sort of mindset.
Corvus and his Raven Guard would probably act as scouts to help warn the Imperium of threats, both from within and without. They'd probably be an early warning system about threats like the Tyranids while also helping to identify new problem hotspots quickly like if a new rift were to open or a part of the Imperium looked like it wanted to secede.

It was implied (on several occasions) that the Emperor had other purposes for the Space Marines and their Primarchs after the Great Crusade was successful, rather than just destroying them like the Thunder Warriors. So I took the question to effectively be: what was each one's purpose when constant fighting is no longer necessary?
Of course they'd all still be part of effectively a reserve force. They'd all keep some degree of re-training and maintenance as an important part of their culture, but they all can't just keep sitting around waiting for an enemy that isn't going to show for a few thousand years.
As for the Salamanders specifically, there are a lot of things they didn't or couldn't do because, once again, they were always fighting. Some Legions deliberately kept their homeworlds inhospitable to improve the quality of their recruits, but what happens when the fighting is largely over? Also, what about the Legions (like the Salamanders) with an affinity for crafting and inventing? Are they just going to keep filling more and more armories with new and inventive weaponry they'll almost certainly never use, or are they maybe going to turn those talents to some peacetime pursuits?

They would not have just been a reserve force they would have been the reserve force because at the end of the day it is their job to either save the imperium or destroy it

With regards to IW vs IF on siege offense, Horus himself is firmly certain that Dorn is the superior siegemaster. He said that if Dorn had been conducting the siege rather than Perturabo they'd have conquered Terra in two weeks. This is from The End and The Death.
Factually Perturabo was winning the siege until he retreated because Horus replaced him with Mortarion.
Also (just my take but) Horus in the End and the death is close to insanity. This is why i am not sure if we can take what he says word by word.

I hold to the idea that the Night Lords were by far the most humane legion. Skinning kids and throwing it up on global twitch might be a little twisted, but that beats nuking multiple cities to make people submit.
i disagree. Even if you say that thats the "lesser evil" im convinced both the ravenguard and alpha legion are able to it with even less casulties (at least civilianwise). Not to mention that you have to balance it against the legions whose primarchs could bring entire world into the fold through diplomacy. Because i dont think konrad was ever able to do that
@@raptorxrise5386 maybe, but the Night Lords surely kept the World compliant not so much with the Alpha legion and Ravenguard. All in all the Night Lords were pretty useful for revenge and fear tactics.
Yeah, the NL left a population terrified to the core and compliant but the issue with rule by fear is that the population will turn on you the second the opportunity arises. Just look at the current imperium.
I feel like the night lords lack of general destruction was a byproduct of them wanting to torture people more than they wanted to fight.
If they were worried about shock and awe, and weren’t being sadistic about it, they’d have targeted world leaders, high ranking combatants and other ADULT members of those societies. The fact they went after kids so much tells me they cared more about just scaring the fuck out of people than they did lessening their suffering long term. In the very beginning, I imagine it was more like majorkill described it, but it didn’t take long for the night lords to start flaying babies for fun and getting compliances as a second thought.
If you combined that with actual structural reform, the night lords would have had more worlds STAY compliant. That’s more what the raven Guard and alpha legion did. They’d either assassinate or play 10D chess with the most important people on a world, crush their resistance before it even gets going, then leave the peace making to the imperial diplomats who handled the boring part.
Where the NL’s fail is their idea that fear alone can bring peace, or compliance. While active, you can keep a population under control, but Nostramo is a perfect example of what happens when fear alone is no longer directly able to KEEP people compliant: it falls apart.
Konrad probably did the second most impressive job on his home planet out of all the primarchs. (G man Turning 40k into stellaris is #1) but in the end his planet was even less stable than Barberous, or Nuceria, since it required Konrad to be actively flaying babies and shit to keep the population scared enough to not try anything.

The true strength of the Imperial Fists is their sense of duty, to an almost boring degree. If big E told a Fist to go wipe all the windows of the palace, he'd do it, and he would do it the best and without complaint. If big E told the Fiats to make what could have been their last stand on Terra, they'd do it, and they'd do it the best and without complaint. They are truly the most soldier-like of them all.
Dorn's unwavering sense of duty was a real chip on his shoulder, and the struggles he went through with his brothers during the crusade and the heresy are truly humanistic and inspiring.
So good to hear someone remember Saul Tarvitz.

Been wanting something like this. Some legions arent straight forwards in what makes them unique.
Yeah it's debatable if Alpha Legion is even a traitor Legion. It's stated outright that Omegon saw the "third way" and released the White Scars from the becalming in Chondax.
The Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Dark Angels, and Luna Wolves are the the most flexible legions. Jacks of all trades, king of a few, and masters of atleast one, these are the legions one would want in a military action regardless of the enemy. They can assault, defend, infiltrate, terrify, use combined arms, fortify, dismantle, hit and run, and apply levels of flexibility that the other legions can't match.
I would put the Emperor's Children, Imperial Fists, and Iron Hands right under them. These three excel in one thing and are great at everything else, but not to the extent of the one's above.
The rest of the Legions are more specialized, and thrive in their respective roles. They are excellent at all things, but the Death Guard wouldn't dare to attempt an aerial assault on the Blood Angels, and you will never see the Raven Guard try to take down the Space Wolves in a frontal assault.
I love most of the Legions, but remember, Blood For The Blood God!
