  • In lesson 1.2 (video part 2 of 2) we will use the Part Design Workbench in FreeCAD and take what we have built in lesson 1.1, modify it but this time using pockets to the part to build it in a different way. We will learn how to fix broken sketches and resolve these issues, learning about the actions that have been applied to the part and how going back through the actions cause additional faces that we have to be mindful of when we start attaching sketches. Before we used just the pad, we will now learn how to use the pocket command. We will then compare both parts to see the differences between them but how they still are the same functionally. We will then use a process called 'refinement' where connecting faces of the models will be merged and we will then see both parts are exactly the same.
    In the previous video, Part 1 of 2
    • Understanding FreeCAD ...
    we built a simplified CNC part in the Part Design workbench understand the workflow of the part design workbench in FreeCAD and how to use it along with the sketcher to create our part working with the sketcher fully constraining the part keeping our constraints to minimum datum constraints. We learnt how to deal with conflicting such as the tangent and the alignment constraint and how to resolve them. We learnt how to use the pad tool to extrude or part.

    For a complete beginner, this was the most clear introduction to FreeCAD I've found.

    04:30 Those who have problem with replace Pad.Face13 (Like I had)
    - Select Sketch001 from tree view, use mouse 2 top on that, choose "Attachment Editor"
    - You have new Task window, on first row you can click grey box ("Solid", "Plane" ?) it turns to "Selecting..."
    - Choose your face, hit ok.

    I thought I was about to brush up my basic knowledge of Part designe WB...Actually, I have learnt many new and fine "tricks", such as "refine" for instance... Thank you so much for your always very good tutorials!!!! More over, your english is very easy for a foreign audience... Great great work!!!

    Thanks again!
    I just donated a little bit of money because I'm, like you, an advocate for open source software. I was planning on using Fusion 360, but FreeCAD is worth learning for my future projects. Keep up the good work, your tutorials are really good!

      Thank you so much, it really helps keep the channel going. So pleased more and more people are taking the open source route. Enjoy the journey.

    Both lessons are excellent. (Everyone loves a British accent). FreeCAD specifically, and CAD programs in general, are inherently complex, NOT intuitively obvious, and can be extremely frustrating. But all MangoJelly videos are exceptionally well done, and well thought out. Each step is performed without error, so there is less confusion. The parts have sufficient complexity but not too much. The presentation is correctly paced for absorption, uses several commonly used features, and is most helpful. FreeCAD is very powerful once mastered. Thank you for doing a great job and a wonderful service to the 3-D community. 😀

      Thank you so much for your kind comments. So glad for the appreciation of how difficult CAD is and I have seen many comments blaming freecad when, as you say, CAD is hard full stop. It's one of the reasons why I did this video series. Thank you for commenting and showing your appreciation for the series.

    Great video, thank you. I am using the "RealThunder" branch, which is more developed. It does not have that problem with the support/link that you must manually correct for the faces. ( 04:30 ) It also automatically do the refine as you go.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting to hear, I am yet to check out RealThunder it's interesting to know the differences, thanks for that.

    I see at approximately 04:20 that it says "AttachEngine3D: subshape not found, Internal name: Sketch001". That's useful in pointing to the sketch with the issue but is there any way of quickly identifying that the face (Face13 in this case) no longer exists and that is the issue?

    I love the videos you make . have you ever drawn multi start threads in 0.19 if you have point me to the video pleas ? If you have not , could you please ? Have a great day sir .Thanks

      Thank you for that, glad your enjoying. No I have never done that but it sounds an interesting model to try, I am wondering how it would work in an assembly as well, could be very interesting.

    at about 4.30 when you change face 13 to face 12 in my version 0.19-24366 on a mac the link dialogue vanishes when I click the face. I then have to move the main window to find the dialogue again before I can click OK, I can not find anywhere to click to bring it back to the front - do you think this is a bug?

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had real problems with the mac version but that was around a year ago when I tried it. I can't replicate what you are experiencing on Windows or ubuntu . It may be worth throwing the question up on the freecad forums. It does sound like a bug.

    • @shrtwhiteboy
      @shrtwhiteboy ปีที่แล้ว

      8 months later…apparently they didn’t fix the problem. I’m not sure what you mean by moving the main window to find the dialogue box. I can not find the box. It just vanishes.

    • @dragonlord0666
      @dragonlord0666 ปีที่แล้ว

      the main window comes to the front (focus) meaning the dialogue box goes behind it and you can't see it any longer. you have to drag the main window over, up, down or minimise it to get to the dialogue box again.

    At 5:30 comes the idea of "tip" which was not self explanatory.

  • @forresterickson6225
    @forresterickson6225 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 4:11 "... we hover over the face and see can see it is saying pad face 12..."
    Am I correct to assume we see this information on something that is not in the field of view of this video capture?

    • @forresterickson6225
      @forresterickson6225 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found it. I was in the sketcher. I closed the sketch and then I could highlight faces and saw in the GUI bottom the ?status line? with the the text in part saying, ".Body.pad.face12"

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's in the status bar. Forgot to mention to say cast your eyes down to the left hand side like I do in a number of my other videos
