Nifty side trip to the Alpine Station! I know that miles are important in thru-hiking, esp. when illness puts a hole in the schedule, but that doesn't mean you can't take an interesting side trip! Life is better with Blue Blazes (as they say on the AT!), when possible. Hike on! Tortoise

That still image at 12:44 is framed beautifully!

I really just hit that spot at the perfect time to get the color in the clouds. Five minutes later it didn’t look near as awesome.

I have to agree, Matt. The Alpine Tunnel Station side trip was well worth it. I reckon that I will have to make my way up there next season.

Loved the railroad turntable. Not too many of them exist along abandoned railways. Totally worth the alt just to see that. Just found your channel a few days ago, looks like I've got a few episodes to catch up on. I see a binge weekend happening. Happy trekking!

There used to be a guy with a van who would shuttle mountain bikers from Salida up to Monarch Pass. Been a few years ago that we used him but might still be around and worth checking out.

When I build fires, I do it in my Ti-Tri (you can see that on my latest video) - ain’t no trash getting in there, since it’s also my pot-holder/windscreen in my cooking system!

I am curious how often u get out ur IPhone to video? Also since u r using the 14 Pro Max, a little larger than other iPhones, what is ur technique for holding the phone steady & avoiding dropping it? Once again thx for gives us a view of the lay of the land/trail… After watching so NOBOers & only see a lot of snow in CO, it is refreshing to actually see the trail. Also because of the snow NOBOers hike thru, often they take very little video.. ENJOYING the ride….

I think about 50 to 80 video clips of day which means my phone is usually out a couple times in hour. I start doing it this way after getting annoyed at other TH-camrs, who were perhaps misrepresenting trails because they were just showing little sections and kind of shrugging off how it actually was. *cough* Jupiter.
Everything I shoot is handheld. If my face is on the video I’m using the selfie camera. Otherwise I’m just hand holding it using the back camera. The image stabilization on the newer iPhones is just that good.
I suspect a lot of people don’t video as much because they’re not showing Road walks and things just talking to people out here. Most all videos I’ve watched I have noticed inconsistencies having gone through and done those sections.

My stated golf from the beginning here was just to capture what it’s actually like out here for Jen and I to look back on later so I change show everything works, boring parts, and all. And capture all these decisions that surprised me coming into this.

No matter what you do in life, there will always be the jerks who "know better" and don't follow good practices. Ask me about why we have so many building and bridge collapses each year. I understand your reluctance to building a fire but, always have the ability in case of an emergency. You are not a sucker for ruins, you're just very curious. Thanks for visiting the old train station. The old turntable was very different from the old ones in New England. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

I can absolutely build a fire if I need to for an emergency but on your average day, I just don’t have the energy a text to set it up mind it and put it out correctly

@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Yeh, the adequate fire extinguishing water is often a problem. Good Luck, Rick

And time making, enjoying, and extinguishing is time I’m not in my tent / warm sleeping bag. I really enjoy fires in the right circumstances but similar to jumping in a lake / river I won’t do it just to do it

BTW, to answer your question as to when you lose the Colorado Trail, that will happen when you take the Creede Cutoff. CT and CDT break off further on at the western apex of the CDT San Juan Loop.
