Great video- Is there any walkability in the suburbs? Dont want to be in the midst of the city but want some access to walking trails/forest, cafes? Also wondering about short term rentals- if that is allowed etc.
Thanks! Depending on where you live in suburbs like Wake Forest of Fuquay you can have an okay walking score, but I wouldn't say there are any perfect locations for that balance. For example, both of these suburbs offer options where you can have access to cafes and trails within a 5-10 minute drive, but walking between the two would be tedious. Likewise, NW Raleigh or Cary have plenty of those options, but they're also car dependent. Lastly, a place like Historic Oakwood escapes the "city feel" despite being right next to downtown while also being close to the Greenway for biking/walking trails, but the home prices reflects that (often $850k+). As for short term rentals (STR), you're allowed to have them with a simple permit for anything offering stays at 30 days or less. I'm not sure about the other cities, but I have a STR in Raleigh and the permit is about $225-250 a year. I haven't heard of any proposed legislation to limit STRs yet, but if you're concerned about that then I'd recommend just doing mid-term rentals.
Durham has a lot of character and is often seen as a bit more cultural (art, music, events, etc.) than the other places around it. Most of the neighborhoods around the American Tobacco Trail have the typical 1960s-1990s architectural style (ranch or split levels), which for me charming usually consists of unique or diverse styles. Trinity Park is a popular for it's historic look and walkability, but it's both pricey and a little bit away from the Tobacco Trail. There are likely small pockets with charm that I am unfamiliar with, but most of my friends live or have lived in Durham so if it's definitely a place you can see yourself then I can do more scouting for you on my end!
@@RaleighNCLiving Thank you so much- I am on LA and originally from NY. I am a veterinarian, vegan and happy in the forest :) I dont want to be downtown but want some walkability. When I come out in a few months I will contact you. Need to see more but thinking Durham might be a good fit.
That's awesome and hope the info helps! I think you'll find Durham to be a good fit compared to somewhere like Raleigh. If you have any wiggle room in your trip I'd recommend looking to see what sort of events are going on in Durham and try to line up your visit with a music, art, or other cultural event.
