    Regarding barns being red: Long ago farmers would seal their wood barns with Linseed oil, they would mix in Iron Oxide to prevent mold and rot, this why all those old old barns are still red as they rot into the earth.

      Our barn on our farm was red when I was a kid, then I painted it white, I wished later that I would have left it red.

    • @weirdscience1
      @weirdscience1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The house was white because they would whitewash it and use the "expensive" stuff to protect their money maker, aka the barn.

    The steel block directly out in front of the tunnel was used by surveyor when digging the tunnel. Aka a surveyors marker. Used to keep digging straight from start to finish when the tunnel was being built.

    Areet Jeff ❤️💛💚👍 great video man. Very interesting video. Fun fact for ya in this country people used to keep farm animals on the ground floor and the family would live upstairs. The animals would be safe from thieves and family would be warm from the body temperature of the animals. I used to live in a house from the 1600's which started out that way.

    Auction or sell off old Timbers to raise money for repairs Mabee sell the rocks and dirt that is removed as well lots of us would buy stuff like that for repurpose or just to have it hang on a wall in our gold room. Heck I’d put a rock on a shelf from that!!!!!! Just a thought. Like if you agree!!!

    Well that's just great. Been up on that big giant berm out in front of that place many a day looking down wondering how I could get through them gates. Been over, around, but never through that place cuz I respect no trespassing signs these parts. Then along comes this tenderfoot, says I'm Jeff Williams and they just open up the gate and let him waltz right in. lol. Always wonder what was in some of those dilapidated looking buildings. When you're standing facing the gate up to your left a little bit you'll see the beginning of a real colorful canyon with all this real pretty rock on it's sides. You can see they did a lot of exploratory work out there back in the day till they realized there was no gold or silver on this side of the mountains. If you go down into that canyon for the first few hundred feet you'll see nothing but bedrock at first because I believe over the years the water coming down washed out the dirt at the bottom, but after you get past that it's a trail that will take you right up to the mountain ridge and will you be looking down at all these trails that fan out towards Virginia City, 6 Mile canyon and such. As you start up it you're running right along side Sutro tunnel I believe because every so often you'll see these big vent stacks, coming right up out of nowhere through the ground. Then it turns and runs right along the mountainside until you hit the ridge. There's a little monument up there says something but I can't remember what cuz this was years ago. Pretty hairy part when you get up there. I do believe this was a trail/road they used to bring wagons up/down between Sutro and Virginia City because it's a straight shot instead of going all the way around down 6 Mile or down thru Dayton.... and yeah, I was probably sitting on the couch eating chips about a mile down the road while you were running around out there. Was sitting eating some more while watching this... Sorry this turned into an essay. LOL

  • @davidsellars646
    @davidsellars646 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is my understanding that, by the time the tunnel reached the mines, the workings were well below the tunnel so that it was of less value for drainage. The "bank crowd" that controlled many of the mines frowned on the tunnel as it competed with their Virginia and Truckee Railroad and the mills they owned on the Comstock and along the Carson River.
    The planer is actually a moulder or matcher as it did the edges as well as the top. Probably, the side cutters could do profiles such as tongue and groove or shiplap.
    Very informative video. How hot was the water coming from the tunnel?

    It is nice to re-visit the Sutro tunnel. I've learned a few things more than before, by watching Mr. Jeff Williams's video On the Sutro Tunnel, as usual He produces a record of Historic Interest. From my own experience. I recognize people have been clearing the fail out to make it safer for entry, still until there is a way to stabilize rock fall, that's not safe to enter. Water, Gases, mold, falling rock, rusty metal cause safety issues and all of the other mining safety issues apply to the Sutro Tunnel inherent to Old Mining. Can't trespass other mine owners thru the Sutro, so without an agreement, we are at the end, until we go ASK JEFF WILLIAMS and he gets in there to take us inside those Mines. Because that's where the greatest mine explore exists on this Norh American Continent, Today.

    THEY BUILT IT FOR VENTILATION!?!
    GEEEWILUPPERS!
    They had enough time and money to build a tunnel just so they could have good air!!
    Man alive, they'd have sent a child down there instead in the UK!
    😅

    Sutro Tunnel Rd is the best off road trail in town. So glad they're restoring this place! Can't wait to tour it.

    Another great video. I love seeing how they lived and worked back then.

    fixing my house up as a result of woodworm and pulled up a bunch of 150+ year old nails up out the wood.
    They're square, but, have a J bend at the top.
    They're an absolute BUGGER to get up too...well, not quite as much as first fix nail gun nails though!

    I've got real mixed feelings about Virginia City. On January 10, 2022 one step on some ice and I went flying in the air and when I came down I broke my left arm totally in half. By the grace of God a paramedic was standing there and called the ambulance. Ouch is an understatement. I'm afraid to go back there but I had never stepped on ice before and I was 64. Back when men were men. A lot of broken bones and a lot of lost lives. Still, a very cool spirited old unchanged town.

    oh man...they NEED to keep that old enamel sink unit in that 70s dude's house...that's 1950s Americana right there!!
    People would top there arms off for it these days...they use them in camper vans and such like these days.
    They're really quite nice looking too when done up
