I am glad Google is embracing more of Chrome OS's roots i.e. Gentoo Linux. They brought back the live boot environment, Linux app support and the ability to install it on a wide range of hardware. Masterful move from Google. I regularly use Linux, and as sad is it is to admit, it is unlikely to be the OS that rivals Microsoft's desktop OS dominance. Chrome OS has already overtaken macOS as the second largest desktop OS by market share, and with this move, they are likely to take more of the market from Microsoft.

Already tried it and here is my review: First and foremost, Chrome OS and Chrome OS Flex are different. Chrome OS Flex is a stripped-down Chrome OS intended only for older hardware. It is based on Neverware's CloudReady platform. Linux support depends on the recentness of hardware and for most of the older hardware without a security chip, it won't work. There is absolutely no Android app support in Chrome OS Flex. Google has clearly mentioned that Android apps would be supported only on the original Chrome OS (OEM-based Chromebooks). So no Android Apps for Chrome Flex. Well, all this means that on your older hardware, this might be as useless as Windows 11 if your goal is to do some productivity tasks.

i also wanted to say, if you have a problem with the restrictions of chromeOS, and you still want a Windows-like experience, you can also try out a light-weight install of Linux like Mint or Bodhi. I have a Celeron laptop as a secondary, and have installed Linux on it. It works great! And, I have not encountered any problems whatsoever.

Only issue with ChromeOS laptops is that they have very little compatibility with today''s software. So if you want to install adobe software or others, its pretty much impossible.

Yep, think my old Surface Pro 3 is going over to Flex... my MediaPlayer PC already did. Streamlined and capable. At last a Windows contender, especially on 2in1's!

I got a laptop that was made in 2006. It came out of the box with windows vista home premium. It eventually got updated to windows 10 in like 2015 or so. Then when I got it back I downgraded it back to windows vista to hopefully not make it as painful. But then nothing is compatible with vista. I upgraded to windows 7 ultimate hoping for it to be the last update and it worked great! Until for some reason the product key stopped working and I could not get my copy of windows 7 professional genuine on it. Finally I installed Linux mint MATE in it. That’s what it’s running now. I think I will get chrome os flex on it. I have no idea why I’m typing all this out since nobody will see it but yeah.

I have an old 2GB RAM ASUS netbook with Windows pre-installed, which never works. Therefore, I replaced it with Linux Lite and now it works fine. I doubt Chrome OS is not supported by this machine as the minimum requirement itself is 4GB of RAM.
Guys, if anyone has an even more basic system like mine, try Linux Lite, it's a really amazing OS and it has all the necessary applications.

I just bought a mint Sony Vaio laptop from a Goodwill for $30 running windows 7. It was so slow it was unusable, and the old software would not even update. Websites wouldn't load completely if at all. This was with a fresh install ( I wanted a sorta baseline before upgrading) I loaded CloudReady and it runs great.
