I play Spelunky HD when I want to complete a run
I play Spelunky 2 when I want to lose my mind because of moles
Both are great
Spelunky HD was impossible until I played a significant amount of spelunky 2
Blargo's erotic novelist arc finally ends, I can't imagine how confused I'd be watching this advert if I had not seen the videos where he said he was writing some after reading the abysmal level of amazon best sellers
The thing about Spelunky HD and 2 is that it's *almost* entirely skill based. Sure, there's RNG elements but in order to truly complete the game, you have to start at the beginning where everyone is one equal footing.
Most rogue likes have a skill or stat system that you can upgrade before doing a run and are balance around a vanilla, no upgrades run being insanely difficult, if not impossible.
You boot up Spelunky and the only thing standing in between you and the end screen is your knowledge of the game.
That's what I think makes Spelunky the perfect rogue like.
If you can upgrade or unlock something that changes future runs and/or makes the game easier then it's a rogue lite, if there isn't then it's a rogue like. If there wasn't shortcuts spelunky would be a text book rogue like
@@rafaelbrito9519 I don't really split hairs over Rouge likes and rouge lites but I feel like Spelunky would still fits the latter cause since the true ending requires you to play without short cuts and, if you just go for Olmec, you have to pass through some of the hardest parts of the game with significantly less resources.
I've been playing a lot of spelunky HD lately and it feels a lot more fair, in spelunky 2 there are a lot more things that can randomly kill you or just one shot you

My fascination with Spelunky has been on and off again, but whenever I get back into it, I ALWAYS remember Blargo. Congrats on finishing your novel!

That's COPE, and you know it! Spelunky 1 is perfect in what it aims to do, and Spelunky 2 is just... quite good at what it aims to do.
Just ordered the paperback. It's not a genre I've ever considered, but I'm going in with an open mind. Eternal and Last of the Wicked were great, and I don't mind supporting my favorite TH-camr.
Spelunky HD is the best Spelunky. HD is by far the most time I've ever committed to a game, I think close to 1000 hrs at this point. I was super excited for Spelunky 2, but after many many hours with S2 I decided that it just isn't as fun. The multiple paths and 'secrets' with 2 just make the game more confusing rather than adding more depth in my opinion. Also not a fan of how nerfed the shopkeepers were. HD is pure gaming perfection

I got cosmic 99 on spelunky 2, and honestly since then it is just cemented itself as the best roguelike of all time and possibly even the best game of all time!
But the only reason it is so good is because of all the lessons learned and iterations of the first 3 games. Love going back, but the polish of 2 owes a lot to these games!

The more I played Spelunky 2 the less I liked it compared to HD. The "guaranteed" things in Spelunky 2's levels like shops or bosses ruined the variety of those levels. The backsides to levels seemed like such a great idea but 9 times out of 10 they were a nothingburger and a waste of effort. Level "feels" almost disappeared entirely. Spelunky 2 really needed an inventory system. Adding a questline that requires juggling items when you can only hold one is obnoxious and restrictive. The physics are jank and you can get caught in "infinites" way easier than in HD. Dying in 2 feels less like "you could have done better" and more like "the game randomly killed me". I never gave up on HD. I firmly gave up on 2 and probably would even if HD never existed.
I agree, I really like the simplicity of HD. Play it for long enough and stupid things happen. I feel like this also added to how the player creates their own stories, for example how Israel creates a whole personality to Pako. Spelunky 2 has more but not as much quality in each aspect added. The core gameplay is great as always, but the back layer is only good for set pieces like the black market/Vlad’s, etc. For adding exploration they suck. The branching paths are inbalabced, as for the jungle the new physics cause every valuable item to explode when robbing, while Vlad’s Castle has the 2nd best back item in the game. Then temple was more difficult for a lesser reward until the patch.
My biggest gripe with 2 is how it feels like it’s designed around the CO. Sure it’s a great challenge, but getting there is pain, for even more pain after. Tusk needs to spawn to get a guaranteed Kapala, the yeti has to spawn for guaranteed mobility gear, Casino has to be there to give a chance for paste or other useful items. The game and quest path is set up to give players a definite fighting chance at CO. Then this gives the game less replay value, because unless you’re a speedrunner, nobody wants to beat CO again. CO is an amazing challenge in theory, but really it isn’t fun, it’s the same gameplay loop to get there, you die to pure stupidity and it takes way too long for a roguelike.
My copy is in the mail. Make it come faster already! I have to wait until Tomorrow for my Lust, Lies, and Magic! Why must today even exist, if I have to spend it without your latest novel?!?

I don't know about HD vs. 2. I never got that into daily challenge/score runs, so once I did what was in the single player game, I dropped and just watched YOU play. I still play 2 because I've yet to see the Cosmic Ocean, though I did have a 6-3 Daily Challenge the other day, so I'm getting there.
New book, let's go! Spicy romance is definitely a genre oversatured with cliche and turn your brain off trash TV vibes. It's going to be interesting to see a fresh take 😮.
I miss the more random aspects of HD. The mothership and the city of gold being actual randomized levels as opposed to their Spelunky 2 counterparts are good examples of that.
It seems like Derek was less interested in the random elements and wanted to make a more "balanced" or consistent experience where every run gives you a similar chance to reach the CO.
I personally reached 7-21 before realizing the grind those runs where to get to that point was too much for me. Just reaching the sunken city doesn't feel like a complete experience the way hell runs did either so it's tough to compare them.

I been playing a couple hours a day of HD lately, I love it. Well... I haven't tried 2 to compare with though.
I do love both games, but I will echo some of the drawbacks others are finding with 2. I have sunk more than 1000 hours into 2 and have still not completed CO. I find that I do not have the concentration/time to complete 99 levels in a row after completing a full run beforehand. I have made it to late 30s a couple of times, but I often find that my deaths feel random, rather than skill based. For instance I have had levels start with a crush trap right above my head and immediately activate, or the numerous off screen chain effects that send something hurling in my direction and knocking me into an instant death. I feel I have reached my skill cap and I'm just waiting for the stars to align for me to have a run that will let me win at a moment where I have the time and mental bandwidth to complete it.

The good thing about Spelunky HD is the music. Spelunky HD actually has music. Other than Spelunky 2 which just has ambience. The only good tracks are: Dwelling, Molten Factory, Black Market, Cracked Shell, City of Gold, Digestion, and Child. Those are the only good ones. While Spelunky HD has all the good soundtracks. I hope Spelunky 3 has good music.
Uncle Blargho, you should increase your screen brightness more when you record Spelunky HD content.

I think HD is excellent, but Spelunky 2 feels like a direct upgrade in some aspects and just overall different in others. After my first 7-99 win, I went back to HD and completed a hell run and it was fine, but I find more enjoyment in 2's higher skill ceiling with the addition of the CO.

spelunky 2 is great! Though I always felt its balance and progression were a bit off compared to 1, so I never agreed with the idea that it was strictly better
I still haven't played Spelunky 2. I just don't see a reason why to, Spelunky 1 is the perfect game.

Hey Israel, unlike many people I’m trying to buy your new book but it’s bugged. I’m trying to get the kindle version but it isn’t letting me. On the website it says u must be in your region, which I am, sadly it’s the UK. On the Amazon and even kindle app, it just says “this app does not support purchasing of this product”. I’m guessing the app is trying to protect me from reading such awful material, but as someone with no regard for myself, I would like to read it. Hopefully this gets fixed. :)

I think if Spelunky 2 was released without the cult following that Spelunky and Spelunky HD had garnered, it would have utterly flopped. Spelunky 2 is just too content-dense, at least for a roguelike platformer, to start a community of its own.

2 has worse bosses, janky hitboxes, cringe level gen, boring shopkeepers begging to be robbed, useless backpacks, free resource quests for mindless spam and disapointing secret world

I'm curious about what "cringe level gen" means. Both games seem to share the exact structure of generate start + end -> generate level path -> generate everything else.
