    Best presentation of Light Rail I have seen. What a system Pittsburgh has. Cut & cover tunnels under the Downtown. Deep bore tunnels, one of them more than a century old through a mountain and more recently converted to share with buses, another much newer tunnel bored under a suburb using the New Austrian shotcrete method, and yet another tunnel bored with a TBM under a river. A dedicated railroad bridge over another river. A street-level section shared with private cars. Gated crossings. Steep grades and sharp curves. Skirting precarious hillsides and running parallel to creek beds. High-volume platform stations and little suburban stops only accessible using pathways through wooded areas. Single-car articulated vehicles that couple into double-car operation during rush hours. This system has it all, the very old and the very new.

    Yes Pittsburgh PA has light rail trains before they had PCC trolleys then they changed the tracks to light rail trains and also added busses on the old abandoned trolleys routes in the 1970s so now Pittsburgh PA has trolleys light rail trains and buses to get around I love it if Pittsburgh PA whould build more light rail trains all over Pittsburgh to get rid of air pollution and help combat traffic congestion to make Pittsburgh PA safer to get around

    Awesome footage. I have fond memories of riding this from Station Square to South Hills Village Mall with my grandather when I was a kid living in Pittsburgh. I wish I could find some footage of those old vehicles they used in the 90's that were white with the black and gold stripes.

    Subways, I believe, are the product of close-in and packed urban centers. Running on surface streets would just add too much congestion, and accounted for old school devices like the 'L' to get off the grade. Electric begat subways and over steam. In places like Pittsburgh, the city and Region has worked hard to develop a mixed commuting plan which, wisely, includes trolley, the subway and light-rail Interurban style trains. Americans have been led to believe that we must accept the status quo and have, in most places, run at grade trains out to pasture. We must accept the need for this type of transport, at grade if need be, and away from massive and ultra-expensive public programs like subways and even more Interstates. This type of transport is perfect for places like Pittsburgh, with its hilly areas boxed in by rivers and mountains. The city and region has developed around those obstacles, and, from the start, surface trains have prospered here. They even survived the forced imposition of bus service after WWII. I hope they continue to use this kind of rail, and, I hope expand it out as far as they can. Someday Interurban will return and connect cities within 150-200 miles ranges. If that is built to handle freight, the lines can be used at night and off hours to haul freight and take a lot of trucks off the roads as well. It's going to happen, and Pittsburgh is ahead of the crowd.

      They mostly serve the South Hills neighborhoods and suburbs. The Library line goes out the furthest, ending in South Park just a few hundred feet away from the Washington County border.

  • @CrazyBear65
    @CrazyBear65 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I still miss the Trolleys. (For those of yinz too young to remember, anat, they were _real_ streetcars, they used to run on the streets, everywhere...) I grew up near the Carrick Loop. My brother's first wife was from Spring Hill... So they finally extended it over to Northside, huh? They were still digging and tunneling when I left the Burgh in '08. But I didn't know it still went all the way to Library, I thought they cut that line off when they killed the Drake Loop. That's cool, I guess. They were dumb-stupid-dumb for ever getting rid of all the streetcars and interurbans and replacing them with buses. What the fuck were they thinking, anyways, huh? They were thinking of GM, Firestone, and Standard Oil executives and shareholders getting rich at the expense of the American People, that's what they were thinking.

    Nice shots! Probably the best Pgh "T" footage on this 'tube. Some of the editing is a bit choppy, though. An idea for future videos: the Red Line reversing operation at Willow/Overbrook Jct., between Castle Shannon and Overbrook stations. The signaling and crossovers make for interesting watching. Why doesn't PAT extend the recently opened Allegheny/Northside extension onward to the airport to overcome the failed-long forgotten Skybus (nowadays, trains are being extended to airports to bridge the gap for transportation options for travelers, out of towners AND locals), I'm sure there's money set aside for such a project, after all, condominiums are exploding like blockbusters, so why can't rail transit be supported the same way....By the way, why is commuter rail more of interest instead of city transit: this is how we the people end up dealing with a not-so-fare two-class transportation industry. . .equal [?] but separate.

    • @RRansomSmith

      Buses go to the Airport on the west Busway.

    • @RRansomSmith

    Pittsburg should go ahead and build a proper Subway Line that's third rail powered. I never believed in trolley lines also serving as subways as well. Even though here in philly we have a subway surface line that runs along side of our third rail powered market Frankfort subway line.

    • @timosha21
      @timosha21  10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    How/hard easy is it to take video out of the front/back of the train?

    • @RRansomSmith
      @RRansomSmith 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Front, not easy since you have to do it behind the divider between you and the operator.
      Back, fairly easy since no one is back there but I would still be mindful as some operators may not take filming easily and might call it in on some BS terrorism claim. You know how that goes....
