Thanks Lt Gen for a detailed clarification on the capabilities of S 400 against Pakistan and China. Essentially we have settled the issue against Pak with S 400, as PAF will be immobilized. We have balanced with China's missile power.
US will create some noise but will settle down finally. This deal is before the US sanctions came into being. US needs India to take on China and India is not doing anything anti US by buying this system in any case.
So this system gives us some time to develop our indigenous capabilities for drones, UAS, missiles etc.
ideally, India should play a role between USA and Russia which Pak played between USA and China in early 70s. India should present itself as a front line state against China, just as Pakistan was against USSR. This will serve interests of all the countries. Russia also will like to contain China as if India goes under, the next target for China is Russia!

There is an international regime by the name of MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime). As per the law of MTCR, a member country of MTCR can’t give / sell missiles, combat drones etc. of more than 300 km range to a non-member country of MTCR.
Russia is a signatory of S-400 and China being not, so as per the regulation Russia can’t sell missiles of 400 km range to China.
Thus, technically China have only missiles of 40 km, 120 km and 250 km range. Hence, China can track and target of only upto 250 km of range

Thank you for the info. Gentlemen. So S-400 is a System and not just a missile. S-400 Radars have the (surveillance capacity) to cover the whole geography of Pakistan and parts of Afghanistan and has the (engagement capacity) of 400 km, which pretty much covers every airbase or missile launch site in Pakistan. Which means we have grounded the PAF without a fight. That's impressive.
With the steady retiring of older IAF fighters and not enough of new ones coming on-line, the S-400 compensates quite a bit for the Air-Defense function of fighters. We could focus our fighter fleet for SEAD and offensive operations in both the theatres - Western and Eastern front.

QUAD/AUKUS like India because you keep your agreements with your partners (including Russia), you develop your own technology, you don't proliferate missile and nuclear technology, you seek a peaceful world, and you are willing to assist countries in the Indian Ocean region. US does not want countries who have the S-300, S-400 and future S-500 system to also have advanced western aircraft. A western aircraft married to a Russian air defence system would see critical information about the western aircraft pass to the Russian suppliers of the S-400 system, who would then use it to better detect western aircraft. India developing its own 5th and 6th gen fighter aircraft. We note that India has reduced its supply of military hardware from Russia as you develop your own technology. So everything going in the right direction from a western perspective. We recognise the US sold jets and air defence systems (??) to Pakistan, and Pakistan has used them against western interests (not western countries). The benefits of the S-400 system to India should be supported by western countries.

It all depends upon the version of S-300, it's a layered air defence system. So don't fool yourself by comparing your adversaries with Israeli's. Be cautious here, Paksitabi's are the only air force pilots that have a sizable number of kills against Israeli's. It's about the men and machine combo that is also true for air defence systems.

S400 is not a game changer between India and China.
While S400 is the perfect air defense for Russia against NATO which has many F35 but no hypersonic missiles.
But an Indian S400 is vulnerable to Chinese hypersonic missiles like DF21 or DF17/ZF-HGV which will lock onto S400 radar signal from hundreds of km away. Once the main radar (91n6E) is lost whatever is left of the regiment becomes useless. So S400 will not denial air space to China.
However the S400s would certainly threaten Pakistan ... that is if China does not give them hypersonic missiles.

No doubt S-400 is a state-of-the-art missile system and both China and India have these systems. Mind you, China is making its own version of S-400, reverse engineered, perhaps. So, India can't match China even in the Ladakh area. India will need a few years to integrate its S-400 system into its air defence net. Chinese may probably overwhelm Indian S-400 batteried with guided rockets and then they will send their missiles and air force into Indian territory. Peaceful coexistence and negotiation with China is the only option India has and will have in a foreseeable future. Does not really matter what India acquires, it may be able to win a tactical battle, not a strategic scenario with China.
