      I think it comes from a comment to a video Adam Neely mentioned in one of his videos about jazz fusion

      MAN TRA Exactly. A stupid comment on a sophisticated reharmonization of a pop song, whivh Neely used as a foil in one of his videos.

    Reviewers said the last movmement of Beethoven's 9 was muddy and confusing. Take their suggestions into considerations, but in the end of the day it'll be you who'll be remebered. Good job David.

    Hi David, I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for making these videos. I have enjoyed them for quite a while, and as a young composer who writes for fun, you are truly an inspiration. It is so wonderful that we live in a time when composers can interact and engage with their audience so easily. Love your music, and congratulations for achieving this huge goal!

    In November of 2018, the London Symphony Orchestra did two of my works at the Barbican. Needless to say, it was one of the greatest moments of my compositional life. And I’ll probably blab and blab about it in the spirit of shameless self promotion. 😄 Congrats David on the Proms. That is indeed a dream.

    I liked what you said about the sort of blurring together in memory concerts get. I cannot remember most of the concerts Most of the fun and good ones that fade away, leaving only the exceptionally moving or exceptionally terrible. I guess a sign of a good show is that most audience members will just remember it as a pleasant night, and, hopefully, a few people will remember it as amazing.

  • @AmandaKaymusic

    Thanks for the watch suggestion David. Sharing the vulnerabilities of writing, 1st rehearsal (before and after feelings) and that the letting go of the goal of perfection or success can drastically increase the joy of the musical journey and are all things that I have felt in my minor creations and gatherings of musicians to play with. It is interesting that someone of your caliber, knowledge and recognition still feels the confusing emotional journey of letting a creation grow into being. Congratulations on achieving your goal and creating a beautiful piece for the occasion.

    The Oboe is the one instrument (in my own 16 year musical journey) that gets the worst rep/least appreciation. It took until I was playing at University levels before I heard(in person) an Oboe *played* , as opposed to someone quacking on it. MAYBE the courageous kid who made it state(as a freshman, while I was a senior), 1st chair Oboe. He's my one exception. But other than him, everyone around me musically trashed it. So thank you David. Thank you for the liquid gold of a Oboe in your PROMS piece.

    I never really put in any thought as to how seating or where the performance took place could greatly affect the sound. Then again I’ve never really been to a concert, everything I hear is usually from my phone or a tv. Interesting stuff. Congratulations as well.

      There a vid on Look Mum No Computer where he is doing a piece by Lucier which essentially becomes a recording of the room (it makes more sense when you hear it). The venue has a major effect on the sound.
      Although I'm curious if writing a "neutral" piece comes to mind when composing in general.

      I haven't been to the Royal Albert Hall in years but, back when I lived in London, I used to go there a lot. I think that they've done a lot of work to improve the sound over the years, starting with acoustic baffles in the domed roof that looked like inverted mushrooms, and going on from there, but there was a time when where you sat in the auditorium made a huge difference to the sound that you heard. The rounded oval shape of the hall produced distinct foci where reflected sound waves reinforced each other and you could hear everything well, but also strange dead-spots where the reflections partially cancelled each other out. It's a tall building too, and the sound level and quality varies with altitude. I directed a video shoot there once, so got to go to all sorts of back-stage areas during a concert. As I say, the sound quality really did vary with your position, though I gather that its somewhat improved in recent years.

      I watched this video yesterday and managed to see the iplayer video today. Congrats on a tremendously successful piece. Particularly, that cinematic pad you created behind the first oboe solo is magical.
      I'm not certain the idea of sidechaining is self-evident in the performance. Perhaps I've missed a nuance here and there as I expected to hear lots of some instruments modifying the "velocity" of others in the texture.

  • @alkanista
    @alkanista 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I listened to the piece yesterday on Radio 3's archive. First off - congratulations! Although you sort of diminish the importance of it in this video, it's also true that it could be a quite important event in your career, isn't it? Seems possible. You never know.
    I'm glad you talk about the issue with the title, because one of the first things I noticed about the piece was that the sidechaining idea didn't seem as prominent as I thought it would be. Now I know why.
    The stuff about not making the piece too easy was also interesting, because I got the impression while listening that parts of it were just very, very hard to play, and the players were sometimes kind of scrambling. How do you balance difficulty for the players out against musical interest? Seems a tricky area. Do you have the luxury of having players test out parts while you are still composing, to give you feedback on what they think is working and what may not work so well?
    Anyway, I enjoyed the piece, and look forward to whatever is coming up next.

    • @DBruce
      @DBruce  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I actually cut part of the video where I said the music got back on track with the title! I realise it may not be instantly apparent, but there are actually a huge amount of sidechaining-related ideas throughout the piece. I was able to talk to a couple of the soloists, but the real issue is more to do with time with the orchestra - so many variables to get right there, and so little time!

    • @alkanista
      @alkanista 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. So I had another listen, this time to the audio link you give and keeping in mind what you said about the sidechaing, and on this second go, I did hear more of that, especially in that characteristic one-note crescendo thing, but maybe in how the lines interacted, too. For whatever reason, the sound quality seemed better than off the Radio 3 site, so that helped. Fun stuff - I hope some other orchestras pick it up.
      The rehearsal time issue must be frustrating, not just for you , but for everyone. The Proms format seems kind of brutal, in that respect.
