The previous owner of our 2005 LR3 said it cost him over $1000 to have a Pioneer head unit and steering wheel controls installed. The upper screen did not work, but that was also because he did the coil over shocks conversion. I bought a wireless back up camera with a 7" screen, which fits almost perfectly in the frame around the upper monitor. It's secured with some industrial strength velcro. One thing I noticed is that your stereo surround is one piece. Mine is two pieces, split in the middle of the shelf in front of the upper monitor.
I'm a Land Rover LR3 owner in Qatar and I've been watching your videos and they're absolutely great. From air suspension to aftermarket radio (alpine) installation, that's awesome. Your videos have given me pretty good ideas, where to look when I notice any troubleshooting in my car. Great work Sir.
Your patience and determination on a different level. In making this video you've done Alpine's job for them. I won't be surprised if they start referring buyers to it so make sure they pay you for doing so.
Hi Mike, thank you so much for your excellent videos. So meticulous and thorough. We have a 2008 RR Sport that we added an Alpine screen/head unit to. Had it professionally done at Mobile West car audio in Portland, OR. The install cost us $750. The 4x4 screen still works, but the old gps navigation does not (who cares now that there's CarPlay). Obviously Mobile West knows how to keep the 4x4 screen working. May be worth a call. Thanks again for your great content. Because of your videos, I plan to take over some of the maintenance for our Rover.
Another really great video! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your careful, step-by-step instructions. I don't think I'm quite a confidence level where I could now install this. That is a function of my personal lack of confidence and not your instructions!
Another option is you don't need to spend all the money on the fully kitted out kit with MOST adaptor. If you buy a new head unit with in-built amplifier you can wire direct to the the speaker wires. The MOST adaptor doesnt allow you to use the front- rear fader. So maybe just buy the double DIN fascia adaptor @ 4:55, the ISO power lead adaptor harness for an LR3 / Discovery 3, the steering wheel interface @ 5:47 , the aerial cable adaptor, a MOST bypass loop adaptor, and the double DIN mounting cage @ 5:13 , and wire your speakers direct. Maybe even put a new amplifier under the seat.
Mike!!!!!!! You are the boss! This worked perfectly for me. I have a 2005 LR3 and used this video with your instructions to a tee. The only thing I couldn't install was the parking brake bypass, which I couldn't seem to find on e-bay. However as you mentioned a simple switch did the trick. I could not have made any of this work without your effort and precision this video. Even pro installers would have a hard time figuring this out and at a great cost. You rule, man! Reminder for anyone not very savvy like me doing this that the Alpine comes with a plastic protective piece for the fiber optic connection that might be misleading and confusing that the connector won't fit your car. That simply needs to be pulled out with needle nose pliers. Mine had an a two piece sort of embeded plastic protective thing, and they both pull out easily. Plugs right in after that. Also, remember to connect all three of those black ground wires together. And if you opt for the switch between the [Yellow/Black Striped] wire and that [Green] wire for the parking brake sensor like Mike has detailed - remember that it will still not allow you to go into settings with the engine running. First key click/turn to power the unit on then bump the switch it off and on in "Settings" mode and you'll see it will wake up for you to modify everything. Fantastic again, Mike. THANK YOU! Subscribed and always going to you first for the real stuff.
Thank you so much for this video!!!! I followed the wiring using the Scosche kit with my Sony xav-ax3250 deck I purchased and it worked like a charm. Had no issues at all with sound and my steering wheel controls worked to the radio. Luckily with the Sony deck I was able to wire my ground to the frame instead of having to use a bypass. I used a eRapta ERT01 HD backup camera with this and was also able to connect directly to the reverse In (purple/white) wire so, that the backup camera and its built in LED lights only turned on when put in reverse and displayed on the deck.
I believe you can retain the off road display by separating the stock head unit. Most of the unit is taken up by the faceplate and the CD changer. You can separate the guts of it and connect that to retain the 4x4 display information. There is information online of others who have done it. I separated a non working radio and it's not too bad but it was just to see how it went apart and not to install.

Great job! It looks really nice. My 2006 is an SE but it was nicely optioned including the rear locking differential. But it did not include the nav screen which also displays the 4x4 info where I have a cubby storage instead. I installed a 7” wired/wireless CarPlay unit that fit nearly perfectly. I wired power, rear camera, and an aux cable that I ran under the center console to the rear aux input. So my unit acts like a receiver and the stock radio is the amplifier with steering wheel volume retained. I can’t change songs with steering wheel but I can use Siri, the phone, or the CarPlay unit. I have a front camera that I haven’t gotten around to install yet. In retrospect, I wish I had installed the rear view camera to an ignition-switched power source instead of the reverse lights. It would be nice when the LR3 is fully loaded to use it instead of the rear view mirror. I may switch it

After a bit of research, you can get adapters to solve this problem but it's not cheap. If you have the Logic 7 stereo, you need a FK-853-6 fitting kit, Amplifier fitting kit AK-LR-01, NAVAMP interface 10-651 and for reversing camera a Fakra to male DIN 21-123. You then remove the original stereo, take it a part, getting rid of the bulk, then plug in the new cables, hide the remains of the original head unit in the dash and fit your new head unit. That's the short version but it leaves you with working 4x4 screen, navigation, all speakers and steering wheel controls. Hope this helps. We are looking at doing this unless further research finds an easier option.

Actually you split the head unit and the MOST interface is what you hide behind the climate controls. There is a company in UK that makes the screen retaining kits, InCarTec.
Hey Mike. Great video but I had an issue I was hoping you may be able to help with. I double checked my wiring connections and everything seems to be correct. Great video, thanks! The only thing that is stopping me from doing this is the head unit trim piece doesn't match the grayish trim on the entire front instead its black and looks "Aftermarket". Any way around this ? Does anyone make a matching color
Great Video tutorial as always. Question. My kids like to listen to their music in the third row via the Headphone jack. Can they select an audio source independent of the driver? Example: Driver is Playing radio Passenger is listening to Aux.
Great video really helpful. One question i do have is would this be the same process for other brands ? For example, I have a pioneer stereo system will the same adaptor work or is there a specific one I need to get ?
Awesome video, I’m looking for a unit so this could be perfect. One question, have you noticed any problems with apple car play? My sister has an aftermarket unit for her Freelander and has some minor problems from time to time
I wish you didn’t have to use the USB charging cable for CarPlay to work. I just listen to music or podcasts via Bluetooth when I drive the car and that works flawlessly.
All speakers work including the subwoofer. The amplifier distributes the one L/R signal throughout the speakers. In the “sound” menu of the Alpine deck you can control the balance (left/right) but not the fade (front/back).
Why don’t you use the original microphone from LR (assuming you had the bluetooth option) The mic works well and it is already in the center of head liner. Maybe you should check if it is there.
Hi Mike, I've been meaning to ask - aside from youtube videos posted by others, how do you research your Rover repairs. It's obvious (admirable - enviable) that by the time you start filming you have become VERY well educated about what to do. I do much the same with various DIY and repair projects, but I'm a relative novice at Rover and auto repairs. Now that we have two Rovers - 2008 and 2009 Sports - I am determined to do whatever repairs are within my ability (several of which you have covered brilliantly). So any resources you would be willing to share? Thanks again for your excellent videos. All the best.
I always read the owner’s manual which is a surprisingly good resource. I also go online and find a shop/repair manual and review the section pertaining to the issue I’m addressing.
While having your phone hooked up to Bluetooth will the volume and skip button work because this is cool and all but I relie on the volume twist and not my phone just wondering
to get the top display working you need to reinstall the original headunit. and connect. just need to power it up. unfortunately the brains of that display is inside the headunit. could mount in the glovebox etc
This would be a cool project to see. Losing the 4x4 screen is the thing keeping me from an aftermarket head unit. But this video is impressive enough that I’m even rethinking that. Great job and I’d love to see the 4x4 screen back.
I will follow the directions in this link to reduce the stock head down to just the required component: incartec.blob.core.windows.net/instructions/29-712.pdf
Two quick questions. I currently have Sirius service on my 2007 LR3 accessed via the Sat setting. Do I need another gadget of some sort from Sirius to plug into the new head. Also, I am a bit overwhelmed at this point on running wire from a backup camera to the Alpiine unit. We driven the vehicle going on 18 years and survived without that feature. Am I correct in assuming that it is an option and not a requirement?
At 8:28 I show where the Sirius XM port is on the back of the unit. You need some external device which plugs into the deck. Yes, the backup (and front) camera is optional.
YOU KEEP IT SERVICED AND IT WILL RUN FOR EVER. I BOUGHT AN 06 IN 08 WITH 30,000 MILES I NOW HAVE OVER 260,000 AND WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PUTTING IN A NEW HEATER COIL I ONLY HAD TO DO REGULAR MAINTENANCE
you don't need to spend all the money on the fully kitted out kit with MOST adaptor. If you buy a new head unit with in-built amplifier you can wire direct to the the speaker wires. The MOST adaptor doesnt allow you to use the front- rear fader. So maybe just buy the double DIN fascia adaptor, the ISO power lead adaptor harness for an LR3 / Discovery 3, a MOST bypass loop adaptor, and the double DIN mounting cage, and wire your speakers direct. I prefer radios with real knobs over a flat screen that takes your eyes off the road. I can change channels without looking using knobs but not with a flat screen = dangerous and not needed.
@@wafflesquare I have those too, but Im old so I still prefer knobs on the radios over steering wheel. I have both and don't use the steering wheel as much.
I'm with you but having installed a free standing 9 inch carplay unit in my L320, it's very easy to use because it's just like a smart phone OEM units fitted to new cars with a central wheel or joystick, and multiple menus, are ridiculous, and therefore dangerous. But the elephant in the room is positioning them in the centre of the dashboard, between the driver and passenger. That's the main distraction because it requires head movement to view the screen, not just nano-second glance with the eyes. That's why I went for a freestanding unit as opposed to upgrade the OEM infotainment.I never used the OEM satnav anyway as it's inferior to my TomTom mobile on my phone and I want everything in my eyeline.
th-cam.com/video/PBRl1tlz0vQ/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared This is another and quicker and probably cheaper way to get car play but it's not integrated but means it is portable between vehicles though 😱
I think the entire planet needed this video. Thanks!

I think, other than obvious differences in wiring, most of the process would be the same and the kit I used would work.
Well explained
Thank you, Kevin.
So with this installation do only the front speakers work (since you're connecting the front RCA outputs to the MOST and stock amp)?
All speakers work including the subwoofer. The amplifier distributes the one L/R signal throughout the speakers. In the “sound” menu of the Alpine deck you can control the balance (left/right) but not the fade (front/back).
@@wafflesquare That's good to know, I guess the amp has some logic built in that if no rear signal is received to use front signal on all speakers.
THANK YOU
Zack you are very welcome.
Why don’t you use the original microphone from LR (assuming you had the bluetooth option) The mic works well and it is already in the center of head liner. Maybe you should check if it is there.
There is not a microphone jack on the back of the original deck on our vehicle.
I also go online and find a shop/repair manual and review the section pertaining to the issue I’m addressing.
how do I remove the plastic trim piece to slide the tools in either side to remove the head unit again? I need to add an aux cable
You have to overcome those four arrowhead shaped clips on the plastic trim.
While having your phone hooked up to Bluetooth will the volume and skip button work because this is cool and all but I relie on the volume twist and not my phone just wondering
I show the steering wheel controls working in the video.
Hi, I installed the system and it works fine. Later I found out that I cannot use "i" button in SETTING mode. Do you have any solution?
Did you bypass the parking brake sensor?
@@wafflesquare No
I followed your instructions entirely
I purchased and installed a parking brake sensor bypass kit. Have you done that?
@@wafflesquare Yes I purchased and installed
Could you change your settings?
to get the top display working you need to reinstall the original headunit. and connect. just need to power it up. unfortunately the brains of that display is inside the headunit. could mount in the glovebox etc
Thank you, James!
This would be a cool project to see. Losing the 4x4 screen is the thing keeping me from an aftermarket head unit. But this video is impressive enough that I’m even rethinking that.
Great job and I’d love to see the 4x4 screen back.
Has this been done elsewhere?
I’m hoping to regain that functionality.
I want to buy one but I'm afraid I'll have to put a lot of money into it. It's a 2009 lr3 with 90,000 miles for 6 grand.
Maybe even put a new amplifier under the seat.
How much money have you put into this lr3?
I haven’t added it up.
@@wafflesquare but is it worth the trouble?
Absolutely
I prefer radios with real knobs over a flat screen that takes your eyes off the road. I can change channels without looking using knobs but not with a flat screen = dangerous and not needed.
That’s why I like the steering wheel controls.

This is another and quicker and probably cheaper way to get car play but it's not integrated but means it is portable between vehicles though 😱
Great video! I could definitely see that being an option for people to consider.
@@wafflesquare It's an option just not an integrated and factory looking fit like yours 😁👍🏻
