What is Foam Concrete?

  • Foam concrete is a lightweight concrete that is made with dense foam, or suds added to a concrete slurry mix (cement and water). The dense foam is the aggregate in this mixture instead of sand or gravel for example. Foam concrete is mainly used for its insulation properties.
    There are a number of foaming agents that can be used to make foam concrete, or aircrete as is is also known. The number one foaming agent is Drexel FM-160. This is a high quality professional product that is more expensive than some other options for foaming agents. If you are making a large amount or a high-quality project, you may want to make the investment into this Drexel product. Otherwise, you could make aircrete using concentrated liquid dish soap or even shaving cream. These products can make a dense foam that can support the weight of the curing concrete, at least for a time.
    Vegetable glycerin is added to the concrete mixture when making foam concrete to prolong the lifespan of the bubbles. This allows the concrete enough time to begin the actuation and hardening process before all of the bubbles collapse under the weight of the wet concrete mix. When the bubbles do pop or deteriorate inside the hardened concrete, there is a tiny void or air pocket left behind which helps improve the insulation values of this type of lightweight concrete mix design.

    Heard of aircrete before but not of putting the glycerine in to make the foam last longer. Makes perfect sense though, thanks for the tip!

    Hello! I am very happy to find your channel. I have sone question, I want to create concrete flower pots, small, medium, and large sizes. Do u recommend this technique? Can I also add acrylic or latex paint to the mixture? I am guessing there is no need for sand if I am using foam. Thank you!

    Idea: what do you thing about creating a wall around the yard using aircrete? My idea is to put a board barrier on each side of the existing chain link fence, then pouring the aircrete in there. This should provide extra righty and structural strength for the wall.

    so what's the formula, and what is the yield vs the same amount of cement with normal concrete, has no one demonstrated the same amount of materials, and then show the volume difference

      I have. In many of my videos you see a foam generator with 3 brass valves on the wall in front of the bench. I have had mixed results in terms of success. More foamcrete videos to come!

    THANK YOU! 👏Could you add foam to "regular" concrete with aggregates (not just portland cement) to make it more flowable or insulative? I do not mean aircrete only but "normal" concrete, i.e., a bag from one of the big stores? Thank you all!

    • @creatingconcrete
      @creatingconcrete  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you could add some and it would increase thermal resistance, but also will make the finished product much weaker the more you add.

      With concrete its very likely that the rock aggregates and sand will sink to the bottom because the bubbles probably won't hold them in suspension

    "if you want to see those videos you will have to subscribe to the channel." I am subscribed and thoroughly empathize with the hairy details and time-consumption of video post-production. Can you tell us _which_ videos show foam crete being employed? A search for "foam" renders six results, five of which are how to make fake rocks out of styrofoam.

      Yes, aircrete and foam concrete are the same thing. Some people reference it as foam concrete, especially when starting out.

      I definitely do have more foam crete videos coming out. I wish I could just upload all videos all at once, but it takes so much work behind the scenes to make these, edit them, put upload them etc. Getting them out as fast as I can!

      “Answering questions about foam concrete” would have been a more accurate title.
      For the title of the video, it was disappointing.
      I mean, you have all the stuff to make it right there.
