    Wow you have some awesome viewers! Thanks good guy Kennith for hooking Clint up with a Vive, you rock!
    Great review too. I'm really hoping VR will take off; as an old skool gamer it's something we were promised was the future for so long and now it's here, that sense of scale and presence you describe blows my mind, I can't wait to see what it feels like. It'll have to come down in price before I can buy in to it but still I'm so excited to try it :)

    Company I work at got Vive about a month ago. I wasn't expecting much, so after trying it for the first time I was pretty much blown away. It's really immersive. Still, I wouldn't get it for myself yet due to lack of games. Besides they're probably going to release updated version in a year or two. Would be better to get it then since there's going to be a lot more content for it.

    It's funny how "Roomscale" play with handheld motion controllers is now basically the standard for VR with even Oculus (now Meta) having incorporated it into their VR hardware. Valve and HTC made the right call in the long run.

    Hi Clint- just wanted to say thanks for this review and your more in depth overview as well! They helped persuade me into buying one last night. There was a deal on Amazon for the Vive, the Deluxe Audio Strap, Fallout 4 VR, and a $100 Amazon gift card for 600 bucks, which is what the Vive alone goes for normally. It was too good of a deal to pass up :)
    PS any thoughts about doing an updated review with that Deluxe Audio strap and the updated game situation?? There's a lot more out there now :)

    I surely can't afford to be an early-adopter, but a couple of the Google Cardboard experiences with a cheap box w/straps were enough to make me take a good long look at my credit card.
    Even with the poor mans cardboard experience, I was amazed how much you find yourself lost in the experience, that it becomes your world. Kind of like how you're really aware of the 3D in a 3D movie for a bit until you start to forget it's even there (thankfully).

    That's the thing about the Vive vs the Oculus. The Oculus says it's VR, and you do see it through your eyes and it shows a lot, but to me the Vive seems more VR cause you can move around, use the hand controls to interact with items and look around with the headset, it looks like it feels more realistic and interactive.

    i tried one of these back at london comic con and i was pretty much sold but i noticed that the view was kinda low-res and strangely "lens-y", do you think the unit was poorly configured or is this just a limitation of the lens based technology?

    • @LGR
      @LGR  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably a little bit of both. The lenses have these rings on them that can be distracting depending on the game you're playing. Resolution is quite good though, but it depends again on the game you're playing and how it's configured.

  • @scottaw1981

    So far I'm super impressed with this one, the Oculus is a bit more novel and experimental. They seemed to put a lot of effort into this model, adding modular parts is also a nice touch. I kind of wish there was more of a natural movement instead of the teleporting. I'm sure you can physically walk around, but sometimes space is more valuable than equipment.

    I watched this video when it was posted almost two years ago and now that the Vive is $200 cheaper, I'm finally going for it. I'm glad I waited too because for my very first VR experience, there's so much more to do now. There's even full body trackers now. I can't wait to buy them and see my virtual body walking around. I still can't get over how far the technology has advanced in just a few years after an eternity of stagnation.

    So how did you get around the glasses issue? Did you just play without 'em? That's something I never really considered about VR, so thanks for bringing it up. I'm blind as a bat without my specs so I don't know how well I could enjoy VR if I couldn't wear them.

    • @LGR
      @LGR  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just played without them! Since I can see relatively clearly in the range that the VR lenses focus things, I was able to. Otherwise, I'd use contacts.

BTW, star trek fandom... greatly appreciated! would my laptop be able to handle this equipment, I just bought an Asus ROG G752VT-DH72, also do you think one would be able top design a house this? specifically, I've used the Home By Me software to design a 3 story house to fit inside of an identical 1/3 scale version of the U.S.S Rhode Island from star trek voyager. after seeing that footage in the holodeck I'm fired up to bring that home design to life with the Vive if it can do it. thx in advance for any answer =)

    Have you had any problems with excessive blurriness? I fiddled with all of the adjustments but find that the sweet spot is VERY narrow. Am I doing something wrong? This seems to be a minority opinion, however I have found some 3 party programmers are developing "supersampling" apps to combat this.

      Yes, yes you can. Although it's gonna be on a virtual screen in front of you in 2D, and not like a fully-immersive 3D world. There are some Doom source ports that take advantage of VR that work pretty well though!

    • @LGR
      @LGR  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm in the same position as you. Left eye can see quite well, right eye is basically nothing whatsoever, which makes my left eye dominant and my right more or less shuts off. VR actually works amazingly well for me, and I can actually perceive depth better than I'd ever hoped. I think this may have to do with the fact that my brain has to focus harder on the separated images.

  • @SimplyMavAgain

    I have a question though. What is up with the trackpads on the controller? What are they there for and how do they work? Don't they work like the steam controllers pads/regular touchpads? Because looking at them that's what they seem to be. But then why doesn't anyone think about using them to emulate the left stick of a controller? It works just fine on the steam controller and I constantly use them for such things. And I think it's a better and less unimmersive option than teleporting around most times (though the teleporting mechanic works really well in games like Budget Cuts, too.)
    Still it got me thinking if it even is the same kind of trackpad.

    • @LGR
      @LGR  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      About the same as the Steam controller, yes. However, what you're talking about is the worst thing in VR. Moving without your body moving, or without some kind of a game of reference like a cockpit, results in instant motion sickness for most people. It throws your sense of balance off and makes everything nauseating.

    • @SimplyMavAgain
      @SimplyMavAgain 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the reply. Well I'm almost immune to motion sickness. So I hope that's gotta be an option for some games. Really looking forward to games like Elite Dangerous in VR though.

    They are actually four-way treadmills now, which I can see being extremely cool to have with something like this. 'Course it probably costs as much as the Vive itself to make one, but it would still be cool.

    Damn I really want one of these. It's taken me over a year to get my current PC built due to budget restraints. I've passed the VR tests, now I just need to come up with the other half.. The headset >.> In Canada though, they're about 1,100$. Fucking hell

    Wow, just the thought of playing an immersive Valve game in VR is impressing me.

    got to demo this at my brothers house on a recent vacation and it's awesome! That's hardly objective but it really is and you really can see how it's the future (as predicted in lawnmower man) so if you have the money, time and space it is so worth it otherwise wait. Personally I don't have the space to dedicate to this plus I want to see how the VR market develops but it was really fun and like I said it is worth it if you have all the necessary resources to dedicate to it. Also, like in lawnmower man I feel markedly smarter after using it along with homicidal tendencies!

    Dude, thank you for adding the meters. That's culturally sensitive of you and really helps me out. Greetings from the other side of the pond.

    FPS games with movement sensors remind me of the old Nintendo Wii playstyle, few people actually liked those things back in the day so I guess it's more about the thing on your head than the actual hand simulator.

    I feel like racing games would be the best experience for VR. Looking around your car as you are driving would be super useful.
