Tho I realized lawyer wont do you any good once the warrant has been signed by a judge.they can do nothing to prevent it from being enforced.
They probably can contest it it court. But being that the cops are actually gunning someone else and court battles can be lengthy, I think they dont think its worth it.

This was one of my favorite episodes. The ending was so unexpected.

@carriecruz8233 the question is was it worth catching him at this point. The only charge they can use against him is for a crime against the one victim who doesn't want anything done to him. The police are acting no better than the crippled man did they're acting against her will, too.
The separation of church and state is there for the people so they aren't ruled over by horrific religious regimes as has been the historic way of man...
Yeah, they made it sound like the church’s business is the churches business and they can’t participate in any way with government orders just like everyone does else. At least it’s nice they made their disagreement known in a peaceful way

This is not exactly true in the States. The State cannot affect the Chruch but the Church can sway the state. Look at what's going on with abortion rights.

So I've been watching Legal Eagle and I must say. Law&Oder definitely needs more Bailiffs tackling people who enter the well and break other court rules without asking The Judge first.

Quakers are naturally a bit cautious because of our history. We would get out to death often for being outspoken, and often arrested for no reason because they were safe houses along the Underground Railroad, partook heavily in all civil rights and suffrage movements, and have always opposed wars and police brutality. Historically, the police would go to Quaker meetings and take people under the excuse that they might act up at some point in the future. This is inaccurate because we would counter that warrant with every legal action we could
Probably not, but the thing is giving the list to police just feels wrong, guilty by association type deal. Could always charge the church leader(s) with obstruction, but is that really step that you want to take? Could also just force them to hand it over through warrant like they did here, but again, is that really a step you want to take. Just because something isn't private doesn't mean you have to help the police, you do have to ready to face the consequence though. On principal I understand their stance.
While highly unlikely think about this in the context of someone like Hitler. Like the pastor said, once he gives them that list they will have it forever. So then what happens if someone like Hitler rises to power and instead or targeting mostly Jews or in addition to Jews, he decides to target Quakers, now the government has a list of Quaker members of that church and can much more easily round them up and do harm to them. In fact things like that actually did happen in Hitler's Germany, so it's not even just fantasy.
As a matter of principal it's just a bad idea to give the government a list of your members, regardless of what group you are.
There is also the fact that in other dominations, sins you confess to your priest are protected an confidential under law, but in the Society, we don’t have priests. We are all considered equal, there is no one who god speaks through, he speaks to all of us. You make admissions of sin to the meeting as a whole. But because it’s not to a specific priest, it’s not protected. Which is a bit unfair. Just because our religion works differently, we aren’t given the same protection as, say, a priest touching kids who confessed to another priest. They also often take advantage of the fact that we can’t lie. We can’t. We can refuse to answer, but we cannot lie. It’s so important to our religion that we are actually exempt from taking an oath in court “to tell the truth” because it’s a given that we will, and taking an oath would actually be hypocritical and offensive.

Your religious beliefs aren't a license to ignore all the rules of the society you live in, though, in many cases, that is exactly what they are used as a shield to do.

Prison has its own justice. He was likely bragging and the guys inside decided to give him a demonstration on how it feels. You’d think that having it done to him would’ve smartened him up a bit.

I guess he didn’t feel guilty enough to turn himself in but he did have enough guilt to not resist the police and willing get arrested. Not many criminals can do that.
He was going to turn himself in, one of his victims talked him out of it.

When they arrested the guy in the wheelchair, I kept saying “What are you doing?” Unless he’s faking the injury, it’s not him.

Yes. He committed the rapes before his injury. One of the women he raped was a Quaker. Thinking back, I am not sure she was able to forgive him because of her religion, or because she knew he was now in a wheelchair (maybe both?). It is a good episode.

This was one of those cases where their were no wins. Everyone pretty much lost in the end.
Exactly. Two of the victims will remain bitter about what happened to them. The third victim has been treated as if she's a criminal for refusing to give up her attacker. A religious group had their rights undermined for standing with the third victim. Finally, the police are going to be scene as vindictive persecutors for going after the attacked who is now a disabled man and religiously redeemed. This is equivalent to winning the battle but losing the war.
I understand both sides, but I agree more with the police, USA has this crazy concept of freedom and privacy that let people do horrible acts because they're free to.
Yes to solve this we must not have jail or prison owned by the private sector. The gov should kill every person in the jails to make people listen to not commit crimes, no lawyers you get i. Jail you die. If the person was innocent after they were killed just give money to family. The gov has killed people since they took this land, what are some dead people to make people not end up in goverment death camps.

That's because it wasn't even worth it at this point. Jennifer could see that, and that's why she told him not to turn himself in. His life of crime had already gotten thrown in prison where he learned his lesson the hard way, and then, he suffer's a crippling accident. It's like have a 100 point lead in the last 60 seconds of a basketball game. Why go for another basket?

@@MuzzyBarker they are preventing the officers from finding out who the persons name is. They may not know it but they know his name is in their books. So that is obstruction.
@@thomasgustafson3956 No it's not. You have every right to deny the police certain things, like entrance to your home and protected information. Telling the police they will need to get a warrant and then staging a nonviolent protest is not illegal in anyway, nor is it obstruction. If it was, they could have just arrested the guy asking for the warrant and then taking the information. The cops have to follow procedure too.
If you only stick to your beliefs when they aren't illegal then the only belief you really have is in blindly following the law. The peacefully asking them not to do it isn't obstruction of justice remotely btw. But even if it was, so what? Things are good and bad completely independently of what legal category they fall under.

One that included a member who was a victim of said crime, but asked that the criminal not be given up.

I've always been on the side of the cops, but this was a rare moment I felt real anger at them. Glad they got the guy, but I detest their attitude of wanting to roll over rights and people.

Memorable episode. This was a case where God served justice ⚖️ already, and Olivia came around to stick her nose in it. This show over glorifies the court system.

That's why the 3rd victim told the police and the other victims to let it go. She knew catching him would backfire.
