MPs grill Asda co-owner during fuel prices investigation: 'I'm not very happy at all'

- Asda’s pence per litre fuel margin targets were three times their 2019 level by 2023, and the retailer deliberately passed on reductions to retail prices more slowly in areas where they had no competition, the competition watchdog has told MPs.
Later addressing Asda co-owner Mohsin Issa, committee chairman Darren Jones said: “I don’t know if you heard the testimony from the CMA before but they were essentially not very happy with the way that you and your colleagues engaged with their inquiry into petrol prices and said that if they could have charged you more than £60,000 because of your behaviour they would have done.
“Do you have any reflections on that?”
Mr Issa replied: “That’s unfair, personally, cos we sort of complied with all regulatory sort of requests.”
Mr Jones said: “You have nothing further to add.”

Retail workers are always the first to face the firing squad of greed
He is simply unfit to run any business let alone one like Asda!
What a passive aggressive little muppet that guy is
Go then buy it... oh wait, you are brokie with no money hahahahaha
@@xv179he's not saying he could do it, just this guy is unfit for the role and I totally agree with him.
He doesn't run it, he only owns it.
@@strictlyyoutube6881 And it shows
Looks like he's had a spliff or 2 before being questioned.
He was an ex Blackburn raver back in the 90s / Blackburn raves 89 😂
I watched the whole interview just to see the whole picture. I've never seen anyone come across as being so dodgy. He would hardly give a direct honest answer. I lost count the amount of times he kept saying 'It's all part of the strategy'. It seems there using the ASDA brand run up huge mountains of debt. Just like the water companies.
Where did you watch the whole hearing?
Asset stripping, something our government seems to condone. Then they go bankrupt, don’t pay suppliers and leave former workers without pensions as the money is gone. They are not capitalists but criminals.
@@tonychorley4936 Simple Solution----don't use his supermarkets anymore, i stopped using asda about 6 months ago
Jesus H, he's the head of the company???
You just need money to own things, not brains!
Every shark swimming in this country is taking a bite out of us all. I am so sick of the Tories allowing this.
@@OliverInternational I am not new to it.
Starmer will "allow" this also, and will blame 13 years of Tory rule for everything. The solution is to increase supply for food and fuel, easier said than done, but that is the problem that needs an answer.
Tories allowing this bullshit as they run by these big dawgs.
Asda just made a ton of staff redundant in my local area. No sympathy to the rich man.
Obviously they must have been lazy good for nothing.
@@georgerockefeller Nah, loads of nightshift that refused to do twilight for less pay.
@@georgerockefellerbased on what, your own hatred of working people?
@@georgerockefeller👈obviously 🤬💩
how on earth is this the owner of asda- he doesn't even sound competent enough to work in their customer services team let alone the CEO position? LOL
What on Earth are they doing at Asda? Looks like chaos at the top, skimming money from the fuel crisis, screwing the consumer.
He said no dividends were taken out, there was certainly a payment. If it was instantly reinvested it still counts.
I've seen far more competent management at every level than this
Agree, most likely the payment was made back to the banks given the level of debt in the acquisition but he surely should've been able to answer that question...
Screwing their colleagues too. I'm glad the Committee brought up Contract 6, it was a disgusting example of how a massive corporation grabs their colleagues by the balls and gives the complete illusion of choice. Accept their terms or lose your job.
Owns Euro Garages (EG Group) and part owner of Asda. So has the monopoly of Petrol filling stations. He has the power to control the prices of fuel in the U.K. can basically charge what he likes and we just have to accept it. Then all the rest follow suit out of greed! Absolute joke
Co owner of Asda
Dont we have a monopolies commission? if yes where are they in all this?
So he just gets to lie and lie again and nothing happens! Where are the fines! Surely the Gov can get back 1.8 billion which was paid out to shareholders. Imagine paying taxes just to give that money to shareholders
A living example that making yourself look like a fool pays off in the long run
Totally!
The tone of his voice just screams guilt
Omg! I need to see the rest!
Have they just pulled this geeza off the street? Wtf am I watching 🤣
PR nightmare, hopefully. But what, if anything, is the real consequence of this guy totally dodging and avoiding his responsibilities in this committee?
Short term embarrassment then carry on as they were, exactly the same with Simon Thompson Royal Mail ceo when he was up in front of the same select committee. The rich get richer whilst we all suffer.
Inflation in the UK has been caused by high fuel costs, every haulier passed on the costs to the retailers and the retailers passed the costs on to the customers , oil companies know the end is in sight and want to squeeze as much money out as possible before clean energy becomes main stream !
It’s also driven by supply side shortages due to a lack of workers. The government is treating as demand side inflation hence why they don’t want to give pay rises / restorations. Banks aren’t passing on interest rates to savers only borrowers, oil companies are extracting ever more profits and the government behaves like a bunch of 12 year olds with no idea how economics works.
So a foreign company buys in the UK, sets up complicated tax avoidance structures offshore, takes loans to pay dividends, presumably to themselves as he says shareholders didn’t get it and our tax rules think this is OK. Does the treasury deliberately write tax law so companies and wealthy people avoid paying, while helping Rishi Sunak inflict ever higher tax rates on ordinary working people.
This guy is disgusting, everyone should see this and never shop in his stores.
How out of depth Asdas new owners are is frightening..... Its like it's the first time that thier business "practices" have been challenged and there has been no cards to play to get away with it.
Enjoyed watching him squirming in his seat being held accountable for his greed and tax avoidance tactics.
‘We sort of complied’
He's sort of struggling to answer sort of basic questions. And can't even sort of tell the truth. Kind of.
Co owner is trying to remember his lines 😂😂
An asda worker told me yesterday all there overtime is stopped, and said asda are buying into subway.
The definition of a “rabbit in the headlights”.
Darren Jones is superb in this role. I don't know if his Bristol constituents agree but he needs be in any future cabinet in a senior role then potential leader/PM thereafter.
He needs a business manager. CFO and CEO should be there.
This reminds me of the clip on bbc news when they interviewed the wrong person completely, called Gu Goma who came for a data cleanser job interview.
I'd like to ask Darren Jones ( who does a fantastic job as chair) if he has come across a competent CEO in his time as chair? No wonder our workers are on strike if this is the calibre at the top.
sounds like they are sucking money out of it and paying huge dividends but not paying staff???
Not only Asda.. Investigate all big retails stores...
Can’t ask financial advisor because they sack them on Monday greedy lying worst thing that ever happened Walmart selling to the brothers .
They were alright before Walmart! I mean they could've merged with a smaller chain and/or wholesaler instead.
Wow this is an absolute disgrace. This is absolutely shambolic of Asda to be so juviniale and unprepared
Looks like the real CEO just bought one of the cleaners a suit and told him to go in his place.
😂😅
Asda is more pricey then M&S. Isn't that ironic from the pandemic
ASDA have been charging Waitrose prices on absolute slop for a good year or two now. Seeing someone like this at the helm? All of a sudden it starts to make sense.
Absolutely bang on!
So you should be criticising the Waitrose owners first. Or is there something not qwhite right about that for you?
Did you complain at what happened to British home stores owner who robbed his staff?
Money has gone overseas
This guy has no idea 🤷🏽
Can’t believe he is in the top position 😊
Govenrment grill Person over Fuel prices..... If they were that concerned , when the Fuel prices rose , the Government could have cut the Fuel Duty . And , of course , there is that Hidden Tax , the Green Levy .
Refuses to answer, more like completely out of his depth, doubt we will be seeing him on university challenge in the near future.
They know how to respond just like politicians. Are there any positive outcomes that come from these meetings?
Phew, that has the same energy as a headteacher grilling a student on why he did the naughty things he did.
As someone who used to work for Eurogarages (who now co-own Asda), all they are about is getting as much money as they can. They took over much of the UK fuel forecourts only to increase the fuel prices in the UK. I used to be a manager for the company and had many meetings which was all about profit profit profit . I understand all businesses have to make a profit, but how Eurogarages conducts itself is disgusting. They don't care about laws and flout them as much as possible; for instance when they took over a forecourt that had a protected tree they wanted to expand and were told they couldn't. one day it was there, the next day it was not, only a stump of the old tree. As no cameras saw what happened no charges were brought. I have to giggle somewhat at how Mosin (Mr Issa) conducts himself, as, if it was in a managers meeting he would be completely different, an intimidating man on his own turf.
What’s the name of the forecourt where they cut the tree?
Their Petrol stations have no staff, don’t take cash & still more expensive than most others…..
Oh dear this guy just looked dodgy. He seemed to resent being asked questions and gave the impression he just couldn't be arsed. It will be interesting to see if he bothers with the letter requested and what sanctions can they bring against him if he fails to write.
They got their fortune selling fuel, know all the tricks, even Ian noticed the discrepancies which says a lot, I was expecting 'I no understand English' ploy but he refrained.
I know people will scream racism for any criticism of these owners but this is what happens when you sell utilities, other essential services and food outlets to foreigners and outsiders whose only aim seems to yo take the British for fools.
@@mikematthews2750 they ain't outsiders though. They're born and bred here
but you are racist. just the contradiction in your statement gives you away.
you see a dark face and your default inner edl comes shooting out!
😂😂😂Britain has ruled those countries for centuries how can they be fools mate. I would say taste ur own meds.
Greed greed greed greed greed greed greed greed
The true face of a Rip Off business man!
Ask him about his Gucci tracksuit he wear on visit to asda around the country.
You don't need to study facial/body language to know that little fella is a two faced liar.
EEESA FFS, no wonder he's not replying to your questions.
Ian Lavery is a Diamond
Inflation and high mortgage rates have been caused by the tories catastrophic incompetence and their so called mini budget which lost the uk economy over 30 billion pounds and still liz truss walked away with a huge pension just for being prime minister for a couple of weeks.
Must have went to same school as boris
Every single politician every single billionaire is so corrupt that’s why we’re here where we are it’s unreal
Where I live the petrol prices at asda is an absolute rip off. Prices down the road us 16p a litre cheaper.
Hopefully they lose the equal pay claim now!!!!
These people turn up at committee meetings and then what happens..... Do they get a call from Dixon of Dock Green or do they go for two weeks in the Bahamas to relieve the stress they were exposed to?
The answer is, for the employees of these rip off companies to take direct action 🤔
His interpreter didnt turn up... Not his fault...
Looks like Chauncey Gardner is co-owning Asda
Mmm wonder where the 1.7 billion went to . Just ordered 2 private jets .
Welcome to Rip Off asda.
We should be asking questions from the government when 85 pence a litre goes straigth to the government
No matter how they wrap it up they are threatening fire and rehire! I have done shopping at ASDA.
Whenever the extremely wealthy justify their wealth to themselves as being a product of their own intelligence, success and/or ability, this man should help to remind them of the reality.
Look at the cover up by asda
I don’t care what they charge on petrol, I care how much tax they pay. Their LBO model lets them borrow heavily and pay little tax in the UK.
Sorry but why are they asking questions of a rotting corpse? 💀
Asda done now look at the information they give out to 3rd partys
Bring back Walmart a company that isn’t even a uk company. It just shows some foreign people respect the hard working people in uk well other do everything they can to rip us off.
Why was he shitting his pants though?! He looked scared to death as if he's in a Nuremburg Trial courtroom.
Really, looked more like boredom to me, he knows they can do nothing, he just sits there saying he hasn’t got his homework.
Now there’s a thought!
Painful to watch... Utterly embarrassing arrogance...
I could have answered those questions better this guy looked ameturish needs communication skills training however wish i ws in his position billionaire 😂😅😂🎉
Hate asda now it's dirty badly staffed no checkouts all self checkouts I wouldn't shop there again
NEVER SHOP AT ASDA OR EURO GARAGES
boycott Asdas its the only answer hit him in the pocket
Maybe the asda co-owner should hire private investigators and expose the mps who are still fiddling expenses claims and receiving money for favours done for their wealthy friends and financial backers.
Try and stay on track 🥴
How is this man the owner of Asda. I'd be surprised if he knew how to run a corner shop. I'm not trying to diss him, I'm asian too, but he really doesn't seem fit for it.
Issa is incoherent , unintelligible and clearly very unintelligent. Darren Jones on the other hand is at the top.of his game.
guess what fuel prices still going up
Liar
So do you still want Indians to govern?
I like him, there's a vague, slightly eccentric academic feel to his persona.
Silly questions from those who have not created any wealth nor any employment
I thought ASDA owner is Wal-Mart of USA
Not any more, they sold up to the issa brothers a while back.
No, Asians bought it…
when a politician whines about someone not answering a question......
Darren Jones is an excellent politician, who does some incredible work. I think your getting muddled up with the Prime minister who refuses to answer any questions during Prime ministers questions.
So no one should answer questions? What an idiotic comment
Tell us all that you're politically illiterate, without telling us all you're politically illiterate...
Asda sells the cheapest fuel compared to any other petrol stations
Another gangster in a suite. !
😂😂😂looks like some my colleagues at university when they have to present in front of the class. Choked up !
Typical skimmer
Is this the same Islamic type that is going to build a "Super Mosque" near Blackburn.
I personally gave up shopping at ASDA when walmart relieved themselves of it......to you who still frequent ASDA....best of luck, hope you get a free ticket to see the grand opening of the new build near Blackburn, it will be a great celebration.
Oh brown being a 🤬💩
It’s their modus operandi. Why do so many Muslim shops & supermarkets get 0-1 stars for hygiene? Because many cut to the bone to skim as much money as possible. Not racist - fact. Many Asian businesses I dealt with were highly reputable , mainly Hindu and Sikh. I wouldn’t trust some from other backgrounds - they & the Tories make great bedfellows.
@@mikematthews2750 of course you do. 🥴
I am sure they will miss you John, and I am sure Walmart are eternally grateful for your strict loyalty to them. Maybe they will charter your shopping across from the US for you as a reward for being such an honourable soul....
Them hindu shops in Leicester smell funny.
Would rate them 0 for smell alone.
who is this guy ??? can't even speak English !!
