MPs grill Asda co-owner during fuel prices investigation: 'I'm not very happy at all'

  • Asda’s pence per litre fuel margin targets were three times their 2019 level by 2023, and the retailer deliberately passed on reductions to retail prices more slowly in areas where they had no competition, the competition watchdog has told MPs.
    Later addressing Asda co-owner Mohsin Issa, committee chairman Darren Jones said: “I don’t know if you heard the testimony from the CMA before but they were essentially not very happy with the way that you and your colleagues engaged with their inquiry into petrol prices and said that if they could have charged you more than £60,000 because of your behaviour they would have done.
    “Do you have any reflections on that?”
    Mr Issa replied: “That’s unfair, personally, cos we sort of complied with all regulatory sort of requests.”
    Mr Jones said: “You have nothing further to add.”

    Inflation in the UK has been caused by high fuel costs, every haulier passed on the costs to the retailers and the retailers passed the costs on to the customers , oil companies know the end is in sight and want to squeeze as much money out as possible before clean energy becomes main stream !

    • @SimplySketchyGT
      @SimplySketchyGT 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s also driven by supply side shortages due to a lack of workers. The government is treating as demand side inflation hence why they don’t want to give pay rises / restorations. Banks aren’t passing on interest rates to savers only borrowers, oil companies are extracting ever more profits and the government behaves like a bunch of 12 year olds with no idea how economics works.

    • @tonychorley4936

      So a foreign company buys in the UK, sets up complicated tax avoidance structures offshore, takes loans to pay dividends, presumably to themselves as he says shareholders didn’t get it and our tax rules think this is OK. Does the treasury deliberately write tax law so companies and wealthy people avoid paying, while helping Rishi Sunak inflict ever higher tax rates on ordinary working people.

    As someone who used to work for Eurogarages (who now co-own Asda), all they are about is getting as much money as they can. They took over much of the UK fuel forecourts only to increase the fuel prices in the UK. I used to be a manager for the company and had many meetings which was all about profit profit profit . I understand all businesses have to make a profit, but how Eurogarages conducts itself is disgusting. They don't care about laws and flout them as much as possible; for instance when they took over a forecourt that had a protected tree they wanted to expand and were told they couldn't. one day it was there, the next day it was not, only a stump of the old tree. As no cameras saw what happened no charges were brought. I have to giggle somewhat at how Mosin (Mr Issa) conducts himself, as, if it was in a managers meeting he would be completely different, an intimidating man on his own turf.

      Darren Jones is an excellent politician, who does some incredible work. I think your getting muddled up with the Prime minister who refuses to answer any questions during Prime ministers questions.

    Is this the same Islamic type that is going to build a "Super Mosque" near Blackburn.
    I personally gave up shopping at ASDA when walmart relieved themselves of it......to you who still frequent ASDA....best of luck, hope you get a free ticket to see the grand opening of the new build near Blackburn, it will be a great celebration.

      It’s their modus operandi. Why do so many Muslim shops & supermarkets get 0-1 stars for hygiene? Because many cut to the bone to skim as much money as possible. Not racist - fact. Many Asian businesses I dealt with were highly reputable , mainly Hindu and Sikh. I wouldn’t trust some from other backgrounds - they & the Tories make great bedfellows.

      I am sure they will miss you John, and I am sure Walmart are eternally grateful for your strict loyalty to them. Maybe they will charter your shopping across from the US for you as a reward for being such an honourable soul....
