Thanks. We are planning a winter trip to Yellowstone in the next 2 years. Coming from Ohio we don’t have the need for as much warm wear. So this was very helpful! Especially those boots and gloves.
Ok we have a lot of differences and that might be because it’s not really cold where you are . Last week it was -58 with the windchill . The clothing I wear on those days are pyjamas lol but seriously when I was Younger I had a screw loose and all my friends too lol. Up here I. Central sask Canada winter is serious at minus 40 skin freezes in under 1 minute anyone going out to shoot normally has a survival pack candles matches and a lighter food and blankets or a sleeping bag in the car .dressing here is much. Differnt I use a winter mitt with a inside separate wool glove with trigger finger so I can slip my finger out to scroll the. Screen or what ever but it’s done in under 15 seconds frost bite is no joke I’ve had it several times .boots here are much differnt on mild days -5 or warmer I wear 1000 gram hiking boots with wool socks -15 to -1 I’ll wear the same sorrel boots you have then when it’s cold minus 30 I wear the sores glacer boots really nice but wait that’s not it on the cold days when I’m stupid I’ll wear my army survival boots issued to all army personal going to the Arctic good for -65 and are no joke you will never loose your toes .my clothing is also totally differnt I use 90 percent camo coloured gear the jacket goretex 3 layers super heavy thinsulate bought at cabelas as well as bibs to match good for minus 40 but the crazy gear is carhart type canvas jacket insulated and matching bibs I wear assortment of toques and fur hats all camo I wear thinsulate under long sleeve shirt and long Johns wool socks are a must in the past 43 years ice fishing on the dummest of days pushing minus 60 I never got cold even just standing in one spot with the wind pounding me for hours at a time while fishing . I know photography your moving around and you’ll keep a little warmer but here it’s a differnt animal
Great video (they all are), any advice for managing camera equipment related to temperature changes in extreme cold like winter in Yellowstone / Tetons? e.g. condensation etc.
I also love Eddie Bauer gear and the sales are amazing. I really like the EB wool base layers, warm, thin & comfortable. Great suggestions, thanks for sharing.
good advice. I live in the midwest (Northern Kentucky) where we get cold and snow but nothing like you do out in Wyoming/Montana area. For my area, the mad bomber hat is always welcome, wool socks and goretex lined mid height hiking boots, gloves (good advice on the gloves. I have glove/mittens and they also accept the hand warmer packets which are like the mad bomber hat something always welcome). Other than that, dress in layers. Our days may start off at 10 degrees and end up mid 30's by afternoon so for a day in the field it's important to be dressed for such a big swing so layers are the ticket. I really like your channel, I rarely comment on any TH-cam channels. Your channel seems very practical and not over hyped. From one wildlife photographer to another well done.
Great video Steve, lots of handy tips for everyone. I'm certainly getting a pair of those muck boots for some of next years projects where I know it might get cold! Glove wise I too also love a pair of mittens with inner gloves for the really cold days. Dressing in layers is key and also when walking being sure to remove layers to reduce internal condensation, before re layering once in a static position. Good content as always Steve, Cheers, Tom
Thanks Steve! I recently moved from central California to Northern Washington, about 146 kilometers from the Canadian border. I'm definately in the market for photography snow gear and honestly had no idea what to look for. I so appreciate your amazing videos and this one was so incredible timed. The first snowfall was today and 27 degrees at sunrise. I have snow trip day gear for Tahoe but quickly found out it's not going to cut it here. Anyway thank you so much for this video!
Best advice is dress in layers. But for cost hunter's clothing can't be beat. Medium gloves I use bow hunter gloves by Manzella. Can get your fingers and thumbs out to use the camera. Heavy duty I use Swany mitts that have gloves inside the mitts. You can unzip the mitts along the index finger and get the fingers free. Boots I have similar rubber boots but for ultimate warmth and light weight I use Wind River brand Snow Leopard pac boots. And again layers for when you're hiking versus stationary. Great video!
You're missing a few things merino wool base layers, ... ice going microspike crampons ... and snow faring snowshoes ... (or xcountry skiis), poles, and maybe snow goggles for the wind when it's biting and bitter, and possibly emergency rope for your pack. These are just hiking considerations.
Haha, yeah I left a lot of gear out. The video would have been hours long if I mentioned every possibly winter item. I just wanted to touch on the few things people ask me about most. I guess I’m not hiking in winter like you are because I definitely don’t need crampons and ropes... no winter mountaineering for me!
Thanks for the informative video. It would be great if you can share what else do you use to walk in deep snow in winter. I see people using ski boards to walk. What is your suggestion for Yellowstone and Teton area? Thanks
Man, Eddie Bauer is missing out. Lots of free advertising for them however so maybe not. Lots of good advice. Nothing spoils an outing like being cold and miserable. Nice video Steve. I mentioned the lack of prints on your wall in the "Ask Me Stuff" video and I see you've addressed that. Looks good!
Now I know that you're a "true northerner", as in Wyoming/Montana/etc., type of guy. It's your jacket collection! If you live in this part of the country and don't have a jacket collection you got to be a banker or something. At least now I know I'm not the only one. That's good info about the stitching for the index fingers. I wondered how you could manage your camera with such bulky looking gloves.
Nice timely video, I've been needing to get better gloves and definitely need to get some hand warmer thingies. Here in the DFW, TX area we haven't had our first freeze yet, but it's coming!
Hi Steve Good fun , interesting and informative. Like the sound effects 😂 and I am sure that Gucci will be on the phone soon to sign you up. Good work as always 👍
Hey Steve, I am going to Africa, specifically Botswana for safari and I am looking to invest in a new lens. I currently have the Nikon 200-500 f5.6, but I am looking at a used 200-400 f4 VR2. What are your opinions on that lens? Thanks.
Very interesting, thanks! So you keep yourself nice and warm but how about the poor camera and lens. What do you use to keep your camera, d850 and lense dry and clean during winter in snow and rain? Any advise is highly appreciated. I own d850 and 200-500mm lense.
For the lens you should order a cover from Outdoorphotographygear they are an online store based in uk, i bought 2 covers for 2 different lenses and they are very high quality, only thing is that colors are OFF, lol. But they are higher quality than lenscoat, their covers are double layered unlike "lenscoat" which is only one layer (its thinner and flimsier, but the printing resolution is much better and colors are accurate and look a lot better.)
I’m far more fragile than my cameras... I do have a lens coat rain cover but rarely use it unless it’s a full rainstorm. Most of the time I just use the gear without protection and everything is fine.
Great video, as usual! What are your thoughts on wearing camo for wildlife photography? I used to do a little hunting, and have plenty of camo, but I haven't worn it for photography. I've seen other photographers use it and I guess if I was going to stake out one location for a long period it might be worth it. But, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
I don’t wear it. The animals are smart enough to know if I’m there or not, camo clothes won’t change that. In a very specific circumstance it can be helpful but for 99.9 percent of what I do, it doesn’t matter.
Oh, Oh, Oh! I was waiting for you to talk about the lower half, but it never came (except for the boots.) Boo Hoo, Boo Hoo. Long Johns? Ski pants? What do you wear?
Now you'll have the ladies only staring at the bottom half of the screen and they'll miss all the action, unless of course you actually don't wear anything except boots below the waist.
I very much enjoy all of your videos. You are know as a wildlife and nature photographer and you have received an award for you white owl photo and there are none of your great nature photos on your wall, what gives?
My favorite was the jacket segment! Very enjoyable...
Ha! I overheated...
10:54 I enjoy electronic hand warmers, the current brand I use is Ocoopa. They also double as a battery bank which can be handy in a pinch.
Great information Steve. well done.👍👍👍
Hand warmers are reusable, if you have a vacuum sealer, just seal them up at the end of he day and you can use them another day.
Hanwag boots awesome
I’m glad I’m not the only one with a jacket obsession! Haha! Great video Steve!
Ha!👍
FINALLY I understand why you have so many jackets! This was keeping me up at night XD
The mystery has been solved 👍

EB is currently having a Veterans Day sale too, upwards of 60% off in stores and online. Great video! I will def look into those gloves!!
👍
You crack me up Steve :-) Love everything you do bro!! EVERYTHING....

Don’t stop watching a Steve video ever,except for now,hello from Florida👋
Maybe you’ll have a cold snap?

👍 yes, Muck boots are great! And for sure dress in layers (that’s one way I justify having so many jackets 😬 I need to wear two or three at a time!)

👍
Steve You need to get yourself a decent jacket, those bright colours will scare the animals LOL
Yep, I won’t be sneaking up on anything...
its really helpful sir thank you
👍
"Tactile Feedback"? Lost on this ol' Texas boy. Thanks for these guidelines, Steve.
Haha, you know what I’m talking about!

It’s a good lens. But not significantly better than the 200-500 unless you really need the f4. I sold mine...
Thanks
1 more thing, do both pairs of the Eddie Bauer gloves run small or big? About to order...
I think they seem pretty true to size but everyone’s hands are so different...

What! No strings on the mittens?
No strings attached
It is sill Autumn until Dec. 21 ????
Good Video like the Muck boots
When there’s 6 inches of snow and it’s zero degrees, I call it winter 😂
Hey Steve, not to be intrusive, but are you a full time wildlife photographer or do you do something else? Thanks
Full time
Fantastic!!
Oh, Oh, Oh! I was waiting for you to talk about the lower half, but it never came (except for the boots.) Boo Hoo, Boo Hoo.

I don’t wear anything 😬 brrrrrr

Just out of curiosity do you have full time job or is this your job??
Check my ‘ask me stuff’ video from a few months ago... but now this my full time gig, but it hasn’t always been.
You need to wipe your rear window next time lol.
It just gets packed with more snow as I drive along!
@@SteveMattheis ok lol. Just want you to be safe so you can make videos lol.
