Sharing two recos here as a fellow scaredy cat 😊 Lockwood & Co. series by Jonathan Stroud - ft. a trio in a ghost-infested London 👻vibes: Ghostbusters meets Sherlock, found family, witty banter, lots of tea and cake (There’s also a netflix adaptation) Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer - eerie but not too scary
I’m 100% a “look up the plot of the scary movie on Wikipedia” person but I really loved Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires! I’m a sucker for a southern gothic, and it hit the nail on the head (the scene in the attic has stayed with me to this day)
Hey 👋👋 Are you into psychological horror? I do have good recommendations. First book is no longer human by osamu dazai... Ill say to go into in blindly and it WILL MESS WITH YOUR HEAD Ankther book is earthings by sayaka murata ( sorry if its the wrong name, idk) i just finished it last week AND LOVED ITTTT. These books are actually disturbing, especially the first one, i am giving you warning it id not for the weak of heart ⚠️ But still i loved these books and want someone to enjoy them ❤❤
I rarely read horror & definitely don’t watch scary movies, but I read Southern Book Club & My Best Friend’s Exorcism last year & loved them. I also read Dracula last year & omg it’s now a book I will recommend to anyone who asks for a recommendation 😂
A study in drowning is also absolutely this vibe, gothic eerie atmosphere and mysterious dark academia with a fantasty twist. Do look up the trigger warnings, (mild spoilers now: there is SA mentioned but it's in the way that the protagonist deals with the aftermath and nothing graphic).
I read Southern Book Club when I was on a vacation and I couldn't go to the bathroom by myself. It was really quite scary. But I think it is an amazing book and I didn't regret a single second of it!
Check out “The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman. One of my favorites of his. Doesn’t get spookier than ghosts in a grave yard, but it has more than that.
The Southern Book Club’s Guide… has trigger warnings that should be checked out by people worried about such things. In all the reviews I’ve seen on You Tube about this book, only one reviewer gave a warning about the trigger. This is not a criticism against you, or your review. I have watched approximately 20 reviews of this book and, like I said, only one reviewer touched on the trigger warning. I was about 12 pages into the book when I heard the warning and immediately returned the book to the library. All of the books you mentioned sound fascinating. I am a scaredy cat and I’m not sure I’m brave enough to read a few of them. 😂 However, I’m very excited about Good Omens. The moral of this comment is that each reader is responsible for checking trigger warnings themselves. That is not your job! I look forward to your next video. ❤
It always confuses me when fantasy readers are too scared to read horror but have read things like The Poppy War. I mean, that chapter in the Poppy War is more horriffic than anything I've come across in the 10+ Stephen King books I have read so far.
Year of the Witching was very dark. It tapped into some of that religious trauma too. It was so good though! I agree with you that if you're a scaredy cat (like me), gothic horror is the way to go. I adore gothic horror books. I'm planning on taking A House with Good Bones to Japan in a couple of weeks because it's a shorter book, so feel like I can get to it. I'm also taking What Moves the Dead for the same reason. I read Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and Mexican Gothic really close together a couple of years ago and then had to read something a lot lighter afterwards to balance it out. Small Favors by Erin A Craig is definitely spooky too. I'd recommend any of her books. Also I highly recommend Small Angels by Lauren Owen. It's got a creepy forest, family secrets, a ghost, but also some good folklore in a small, English village.
Total scaredy cat here too. I loved The Bear & the Nightingale and also Annihilation, but they both scared me enough that I couldn't read them right before bed. Love a story that's just creepy enough, so I'll try some of your recs!
Good Omens is such a magnificent book, though the show is my favourite lol. It’s very queer and fun while also covering so many darker themes around religious trauma and a lot more, as you would expect from work from Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. So glad to see you recommending it!
I am contemplating between two books to pick up right now - the diviners (although I almost never read YA anymore) or the whisper man. Then Regan posted this video. So I thought if she recommends either of these two, I will take it as a sign and start but alas neither was on the list. Hence posting to see if anyone can help me decide

@@imabookworm I'm not into psychological horror
I recently read Southern Bookclub's Guide to Slaying Vampires. It was engrossing, but I was also mad at basically everyone the whole time lol.

I'm so happy you included Ordinary Monsters! Very very underrated. Its second part is due next year!
I have badly needed a book list like this for a while I can’t handle horror but Halloween is the best!
I can't wait to try these recs! If you want cozy/slightly spooky, try "the graveyard book" by Neil gaiman. It's so good.
I just read A House with Good Bones yesterday and I’m obsessed!!!! Loved the cozy mixed with scary!!!

thanks for alll these recommendations! i’m so excited for the spooky season!
“Making my heart race but not absolutely ruining my life.” 😂😂

Just finished reading "The Only One Left" by Riley Sager - perfect gloomy/creepy/mystery vibes for fall!
I’ve heard such good things about T Kingfisher but haven’t picked up one of their books yet 👀
Thank youuu, this is exactly what I've been looking for, I want to read spooky stories without having nightmares for months lol

Gothic horror is definitely my favourite, love the mix of books in this vidro
i love a good truly terrifying story that’s also funny. one of the reasons why jordan peele is my absolute favorite director.

My rec is The Good House. Set in Washington state w amazing witchy voodoo vibes
I might check out the year of the witching
Year of the Witching is a personal recommendation 😍😊🤗I loved It!!
I would also recommend Darcy Coates for not-too-scary horror. The Haunting of Ashburn House is really good!
I’m a new follower of peruse project. Love the vibes! All these look like perfect reads. Now I just have to pick one!
The drowning kind by Jennifer McMahon was so good! Spooky but not too spooky
I've only read Truly Devious but some of these are on my TBR. I should read them soon! Great video!!
I just read and loved “The Only One Left” by Riley Sager. It had the perfect gothic mystery vibes without being a horror book!
Good Omens is such a magnificent book, though the show is my favourite lol. It’s very queer and fun while also covering so many darker themes around religious trauma and a lot more, as you would expect from work from Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. So glad to see you recommending it!
I really like reading book with a spooky atmosphere in this season, I would recommend one I have recently finished "The only one left" by Riley Sager.
It would be so great if you could add Chapters in your video with the Book Names so its easier to have an overview of the list 😊
i love your videos!!
HELL YES TO GOOD OMENS. And I ONE THOUSAND PERCENT recommend the tv show as well.
This is perfect as I decorate for Halloween! 🎃
Any Christina Henry book, especially Alice and Hook!
Good Omens isn't scary guys, it'll only rip your heart out of your chest and hands it to you gently
The southern book club's guide to slaying vampires is the scariest one in the list.
I am contemplating between two books to pick up right now - the diviners (although I almost never read YA anymore) or the whisper man. Then Regan posted this video. I haven’t read either of them, but I’ve heard bad things about Whisper Man and most ppl seem to like The Diviners 🤷🏻♀️
I read the whisper man and it freaking blew my socks off. A 5 star read.
Truly Devious is actually a 6 part series not a Trilogy ☺️
Can anybody recommend exactly “I will have nightmares the rest of my life” type of books?
Have you seen Jordaline Reads video’s? She’s into all the gross spooky gory books. She has a lot of recommendations on her channel.
