I've never even played a Final Fantasy game before, but you're right, Reeve the Surprisingly Benevolent Business Guy and his probably sentient toy cat prince (cat princes? plural?) deserve more attention from both the story and the players.
thanks for sharing this! Reeve and Cait are fun characters to know about, even if I've never played any of their games.

I know nothing about FInal Fantasy or this guy but this'll make for FIRE background noise as I play an entirely different videogame!

I’m pretty sure part 3 is gonna be called Reborn. The final boss theme in Remake was “One-Winged Angel: Rebirth”, and the final boss theme in Rebirth is “One-Winged Angel: Reborn”.

Thank youuu thank you for this video! Reeve and Cait get so overlooked so much of the time by the fandom and I’m always happy to see people talking about how interesting they are 💕

As a 34 year old senior citizen it's nice to see a youngin cover FFVII (my first jrpg and beginning of the end for me) especially a character like Reeve. Great video

I have not played remake or rebirth, but I always really liked Reeve in the original FF7. He does not appear much in person, but he is so interesting.
Wait. Cait Sith is Reeve's STAND.

honestly even if they change how Inspire works, you can still choose to believe that Cait Sith is his own character. screw the canon! (even though it was canon before)

So, judging by the title this is a whole video on one of my favourite FFVII characters.
    Heck yeah!

Y'know, it was insanely nice hearing more about this character! I like Reeve and Cait Sith ALOT but could never really connect very heavily with him, just bc of a lack of knowing who he is as a character. But with this and the remake series, I've grown quite a likeness for him ngl!
    He's pretty neat as :D

26:38 I disagree in the original game they still hinted at that Shinra blew the first reactor because Jessie on the train wonders about if her bomb had enough power to do the amount of damage that it did and in the bar she is still hung up on it.
Remake just spells it out to the player

    • @longcurse
      @longcurse 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Also, we'll probably get some variation on Cait and Reeve’s argument, considering I doubt Reeve is super kept up to date on Heidegger’s war plans, so probably doesn't know Shinra finished off the reactor itself. Speculation, yes, and a bummer it probably won't have as big a big punch with the player already being privy to what actually happened.

I think that Reeve may not have as much of a leg to stand on in a confrontation with Barrette , but I also think that the team has done a good job fleshing out the interpersonal conflicts of it’s characters. Cloud’s conflicts with Barrette were very well handled so I have a lot of faith we could have a very well done scene of reeve forcing Barrette to face his own actions. I think a lot of Reeve’s missed potential comes from him not being able to bounce off of the main party, but I think that could be remedied in part 3 once the cat comes out of the bag on his identity.
Also great job with the video, I barely cared about this guy before but you made me see a lot of the potential he has as a character.

Yay reeve video time, and btw it would be neat if you wanted to do other vids about other characters that you really enjoy!
I want to add my own cents to the topic! About the inspire ability, I was really baffled to see it was a thing when I found out about it, since it's kinda out of place in this game world. I wonder if maybe it's supposed to be/it will be recontextualized as a materia he has? I'm sure the reason why the Devs are always hushhush about it is for that, since they really like the concept but it doesn't make sense apparently with everything else. The only thing similar to it is like, yuffie's ninja powers, but I don't think they count.
I find it funny however that this "bringing toys and items to life through inspiration" is kinda what deltarune's dark worlds are about ahaha
I was surprised you boiled down the interactions being Cait and reeve in dirge to just standing around, since I remember seeing them talking and I also stumbled on a truly wtf clip of Cait disguising himself as a lifelike reeve which was truly something and slightly morbid. I guess it was maybe too much for the scope of this video lmao? I also heard that the crown is actually important for Cait to actually work or smth along those lines, I don't remember rn but they also haven't done anything with it so...
Furry and vrchat jokes aside, the fact the remake added details about reeve's enthusiasm about houses is so cute. There is one moment Cait goes on and on about how all the infrastructure under the saucer has been abandoned and turned for the worse and he seems so genuinely upset and sad about it it's very neat.
About the critiques to rebirth, I totally get where you're coming from, and I agree on certain levels, but I don't really mind. They are part of the changes rebirth did, and for the most part they fall into the same pitfalls as the other changes do. And by that I mean, they are all great changes, but by being changes they change parts or the feels to some scenes from the og, giving it equally good but different vibes, that now it's hard to choose what the story would be better with. Arguably, rebirth definitely fixed the major hiccups of og especially tied to Cait, but they did take away or made less clear the few good elements Cait had, like his sacrifice. To me in general it's totally worth the exchange, but I understand the feeling. Like, on one hand seeing desperate reeve keeping Marlene hostage is cool, but on the other hand how it happens in rebirth is just as cool in the other direction. Or for an unralted example, how Marlene's dad wants to kill her in og, while in rebirth they go with another just as effective angle, or how they changed aerith's death.
Btw, the reason you can't build affinity with him is likely because of being a spy and he joins later, but also there's to remember the fact he leaves your party too, which would make that chunk of the game weird if you needed him for quests.
I actually hadn't noticed that they may be trying to make Cait not independent anymore in rebirth. I had noticed the going to sleep bit they added in Cosmo canyon, but I don't remember at the time what I thought of it. I don't think they really are doing that, it may be just a early impression, but I wouldn't be surprised if either it's tied to Reeve in a more abstract way (for all we know, the inspire power, aka power of pretending a toy is alive stops working when Reeve is asleep). It's also in the realm of possibilities we may find out he did that to stay alone for some specific reason next game in a flashback. Or, maybe it was Cait for some reason pretending to power off in front of the group to sell the act he is a robot? Something I enjoyed from rebirth is how, despite everyone mentioning at times Cait being a robot, he very much isn't one at all, and it's really a empty stuffed plushie (hence the remark from the ghost he was empty) which is obvious when you put him next to Mog and Chadley, especially Mog who in og really came across as another plushie, but now its just a robot. I do miss the sacrifice monologue from Cait, but I wonder if that's why they decided to not include it? Because from Cait's point of view, his identity comes to life truly solely from reeve, who is using toys to play pretend so well the toy becomes fully sentient, so being torn apart doesnt mean anything for him? So unlike og where it reads like a robot ai dying and being replaced by a copy, reeve just stops pretending with this plushie and starts doing it with this other one? In that case, the sacrifice monologue does fit much better with Chadley and surprisingly, Mog, who IS the one that gets the emotional gesture "I care about you/goodbye/don't forget about me" at the very end, since it can't speak. What do you think? This way it actually makes the Cait that returns really the same Cait, just with another body after the previous was broken. If how I'm reading this to be true and they are going to do something neat with him and reeve next game, I think this is a good starting point! Cait may not be a robot anymore if he ever was in the og, but now he's like a imaginary friend, or... An actual fursona lmao, who will stop existing when Reeve eventually will, and maybe then cait will ponder his existence like Chadley does in rebirth. where does an imaginary creature given form and life go when the mind that creates him disappears?
About the Reeve having a Cait at his desk, I think it works. Yeah, I get it's a bit too obvious, but most people probably know about it or if they don't, it may probably not be as obvious to them without the og context.
I may have talked about Cait most of this comment, but despite never playing or seeing stuff after og, every time I see or remember reeve being almost like the new president of the world, it's such a good look and cool position for him. He looks both humble but sophisticated yet ethereal or regal with how he is presented and he looks, it's very neat! Almost like a monk or saint feel, as much as I hate to say that. Enlightened is a good word to describe it i guess. Maybe this innocence of his may be related to the inspire ability, or the reason why he has it?

I'm someone who grew up on the original game, but I did not know about Reeves' inpire ability or the original intentions for his story arc. This video has been very enlightening for me.
Also, I can be the only one who thinks remakes Reeves looks like Keanu Reeves right?

Hadn’t finished Rebirth when this came out but I finally found time to come back & watch it after I did, and I definitely agree.
The hints at removing Inspire and having Cait Sith just be an AI that Reeve controls definitely feels like a misstep, as it feels like it’s removing an entire character. Although I feel like this can be undone if they simply acknowledge Inspire IN the 3rd game & explain it, instead of just leaving it in guide books or other extra material. They could have it when the party is questioning Reeve or Cait Sith at some point, and the connection gets explained for the party (and by extension the audience) to understand it.
To me, Rebirth feels like it did Cait Sith justice overall, and while gave Reeve some spotlight, it feels like he’ll need more in the 3rd game. Overall, it left me with 3 things on my wishlist for the game:
    1. Acknowledge Inspire & explain the Reeve/Cait Sith connection.
    2. Have Cait Sith & maybe even Reeve acknowledge how the 1st Cait Sith died & maybe even show some emotion about it? Like grieving over his death or something similar, since Rebirth didn’t exactly give them the time to.
    3. Admittedly this feels like very wishful thinking, but I’d like to see them acknowledge the “Reeve cares about the Caits & Midgar like his kids” relationship, as I feel like that would really flesh both Reeve & Cait Sith out. It doesn’t have to be outright said, just showing it through Reeve greatly caring about Cait & the safety of Midgar, maybe along with a few small hints through actions would be enough. Maybe they could even have Cait Sith doing something similar to show he’s sees Reeve as a parental figure or role model due to giving him life?

The part about the remake is really interesting. How it does some things well, but also makes a lot of mistakes.
I feel like the remake is very.... weird? Don't get me wrong, some changes are great, but I feel like sometimes changes are made for the sake of changing or introducing something new, not realizing what they mess up with those changes.
The remake seems to be more a different take from the ground up on FF7, rather than trying to make the ultimate version of what existed.
It is not a bad approach per se. But if it ends up so different from the original, it cannot rely on what the original has done for its own purpose.
A lot of rambling in my comment, but I guess this just means that your video was so thoughtful, that it gave new perspective on the differences as a whole, by focusing on a detail.
